The yacht club & the humberston fitties..

I think I'd be quite happy walking there, though I imagine it could get quite windy. Interesting to see the WW2 fort. Thanks.

To this end we have a large and very active Cadet section as well as an RYA recognised sailing school and a number of club owned dinghies to learn in. Residents are angry at the invasion of visitors who risk spreading coronavirus and the lives of homeowners on The Fitties.

Some have erected polite signs saying "Go Away" as the number of people driving to the Tetney marshes to walk their dogs has increased.

The car park at Humber Mouth Yacht Club has reopened after it was closed temporarily by police.

But visitors have continued to park along the narrow lanes blocking the driveways and churning the verges of chalet owners.

One of them, Frank Barber used a stuffed dummy he nicknamed 'Amy'  to advise visitors not to go to the Fitties for exercise because of the risk of contaminating residents with coronavirus .

It is believed many of the visitors are not from North East Lincolnshire as residents are frequently asked for directions.

But since the ban on dog walking came in to force on Cleethorpes beach on Good Friday, many more owners are also flocking to The Fitties.

Frank has erected "Go Away" signs outside his chalet.

When he asks people why they have travelled to The Fitties he has been told a range of excuses.

He added: "There is no good reason why they have to come down here and can't go elsewhere to walk their dogs."

Another resident said: "We are fine with cyclists because they are getting their exercise and they are not going on the beach. But the rest are just not listening and parking wherever they want. We have people in their 90s living here and they can't get out in their garden because people are parking right outside and risking the spread of the virus."

She added: "We are not saying to people that this is ours and they have to keep out. But we want to inform them of the guidelines. We had 178 on Sunday and that was when it was quiet.

"Yes, it can be confusing when the guidelines first say that people cannot drive to get a place to get exercise and then they say people can go a short distance. The car park did get locked up for a while but then it was opened up again. North East Lincolnshire Council say the beaches are open but the Government says people should stay at home."

She erected a number of signs along the beach front.

East Lindsey District Council has relaxed its restrictions on dog walkers using beaches further along the Lincolnshire coast at Mablethorpe, Sutton-on-Sea and Skegness. But on Cleethorpes beach the ban is strictly in place in order to protect water quality and meet the Blue Flag standard and Natural England advice.

North East Lincolnshire Council portfolio holder for finance and Humberston and New Waltham ward councillor Stan Shreeve said he is talking with Thorpe Park bosses to try to get more car parks opened.

He said: "The three ward councillors, Councillors Harness, Fenty and myself received representations from Fitties tenants after last weekend.  We were advised that cars, on finding both the Thorpe Park and the car park adjacent to the Yacht Club closed, were circling the Fitties and parking indiscriminately on the Fitties roads and the approach roads, which made some vulnerable tenants uneasy. 

"Ward councillors held conservations with the policing team, Tingene and NELC, and the consensus was that the reopening of the Yacht Club car park, and that at Thorpe Park was actually the course of least risk. After all it is permitted to take a short drive to a walk under the current restrictions.

"I have personally been in touch with Thorpe Park and they are considering reopening, which in my view is crucial.

"In know that not all Fitties tenants support this view, but I repeat that in recommending the action we are at least moving the problem away from them.  Fears about people coming long distances or not observing social distancing remain whether or not the car parks are open, but it is our belief that the vast majority of the public will observe the social distancing rules.

"Of course we realise that there is no easy solution to the problem in the current environment, but we believe that this action better protects Fitties tenants, as the previous closure doesn’t seem to have done. But as they say, you can’t please all of the people all of the time."

Fellow Humberston and New Waltham ward councillor Stephen Harness said: "If people are going to be encouraged not to go to the Fitties then there would have to be signs up on the roundabout at the end of Cleethorpes   Kings Road to let them know and that would mean having traffic regulation orders. That is going to require a much bigger debate and whether these car parks should be open.

"As ward councillors we support the residents 100 per cent. But there will have to be a much wider discussion as we have seen what happens when you put police tape over the car park entrance. You can't do that because it makes it look like a crime scene."

A spokesman for North East Lincolnshire Council said: “People should not be making unnecessary journeys to Cleethorpes beach, the Fitties or anywhere else.

“The advice from Government is clear – only go outside for food, health reasons or work (but only if you cannot work from home).

“The advice is to stay local and use open spaces near to your home where possible – do not travel unnecessarily. People must stay at home to protect the NHS and save lives."

He added: "The seasonal ban is part of an agreement we have with Natural England and we would need to submit an amended agreement to them for approval.

“Cleethorpes beach sits between a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a wetland protected by the Ramsar convention. The ban is both a PSPO and an old bye law, which was ratified by government.

“From an international law point of view, Cleethorpes has one of the most highly protected beaches in the world.

“We have plenty of parks and open spaces in our area, as well as a large stretch of beach open to dog walkers all year round, but people should not be travelling unnecessarily.”
