The high-profile arrest of former Trump advisor Steve Bannon took place Thursday aboard a superyacht owned by a Chinese entrepreneur wanted in Beijing. The 151-foot Lady May , owned by Guo Wengui, was boarded by the U.S. Coast Guard, special agents from the United States attorney’s office in Manhattan and federal postal inspectors around 7 a.m. Thursday morning.

Hours later, Bannon pleaded not guilty to charges that he and others had siphoned millions of dollars from an online fundraising effort called “We Build the Wall,” a private group whose stated goal was to raise money for a U.S. border wall with Mexico. Bannon was accused of taking about $1 million for personal expenses. He was later released on $5 million bail.

Vacationers noticed the superyacht anchored offshore in Westbrook, Connecticut. Yesterday afternoon, many binoculars were in evidence on the beach, scoping out Lady May , which later departed for Manhattan. “I never saw such a big boat,” Catherine Bue-Hepner told the local newspaper, The Day . “When the owner of the cottage came by, he said it was Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio. You figured it had to be somebody big.”

Instead, it was Wengui and Bannon. Wengui, an exiled Chinese billionaire , has business ties to Bannon. He was not arrested yesterday, but there are warrants out for his arrest in Beijing, where authorities have accused Wengui of crimes including bribery, kidnapping, money laundering, fraud and rape. He fled to the U.S. in late 2014 and lives in self-imposed exile in Manhattan. He is also a member of President Trump’s Mar-A-Lago club in Florida.

Feadship launched Lady May  in the Netherlands in 2014. Originally named Como , the yacht was built for New Zealander Neville Crichton. Robb Report reported at the time that the yacht was different from others on the market because its main deck was wrapped in a continuous sheet of glass. “This design creates the illusion that the entire superstructure is supported by glass and provides largely uninterrupted views from the yacht’s salon and forward owner’s suite,” we wrote.

Lady May is currently on sale for $27.9 million .  It won a number of design awards in 2015 after it was launched.

The Bannon arrest was made by officials from the U.S. Postal Service, with transport provided by the U.S. Coast Guard.

What Amenities are Included on Superyachts?

Owning a superyacht is a sign of wealth and prestige, and many of the worlds most prominent billionaires have their own vessels.

How Much Do Superyachts Cost?

lady may yacht owner

When it comes to superyachts, the sky is the limit when it comes to cost.

These luxury vessels come with hefty price tags that can range from anywhere between $30 million to over $400 million.

So, if youre in the market for a superyacht, youre looking at an investment that could easily break the bank.

The cost of a superyacht is driven by a variety of factors, including size, amenities, and customization.

Generally, the larger the yacht, the more expensive it will be.

Superyachts typically range in size from 100 feet to over 200 feet, and they can be as wide as 40 feet.

The bigger the yacht, the more luxurious features and amenities it will have.

Amenities also play a significant role in the cost of a superyacht.

While some owners prefer to keep their yachts out of the public eye, others have made headlines with their extensive amenities.

From swimming pools and helicopter pads to on-board cinemas and spas, the sky is the limit when it comes to customizing a superyacht.

The more amenities a superyacht has, the more expensive it will be.

Finally, customization is another major factor that will drive up the cost of a superyacht.

Many luxury vessels have custom-designed interiors that are tailored to the owners tastes.

From custom furniture and artwork to lighting and audio systems, the cost of a superyacht can quickly escalate depending on the level of customization.

In short, the cost of a superyacht can vary widely depending on its size, amenities, and customization.

While some may be able to get away with spending a few million dollars, others may end up spending hundreds of millions of dollars on their dream yacht.

No matter what your budget is, its important to do your research and find out exactly what youre getting for your money before signing on the dotted line.

Keeping Superyachts Out of the Public Eye

When it comes to owning a superyacht, some owners prefer to keep their vessels out of the public eye.

Understandably, these individuals are concerned with privacy and discretion, and therefore tend to take measures to ensure their yachts are not visible to outsiders.

For instance, some superyacht owners opt to keep their vessels in private marinas, away from the public areas of larger ports.

Additionally, some yacht owners may choose to hire security guards to patrol and protect their vessels while they are moored or sailing.

In addition to physical security, some superyacht owners also use technology to keep their vessels out of the public eye.

For example, a yacht owner may choose to install a satellite-based communications system that allows them to keep their vessel completely off-radar.

This system works by bouncing signals off satellites rather than transmitting them, making it virtually impossible for anyone to track the yachts movements.

Finally, some superyacht owners also choose to limit the number of people who have access to their vessels.

For instance, the owner may only allow family members and close friends to board the yacht.

Additionally, the owner may choose to employ a limited number of staff to help maintain the vessel and keep it running smoothly.

These individuals may be required to sign non-disclosure agreements to ensure they do not disclose any information about the yacht or its owner.

Overall, while some superyacht owners may choose to keep their vessels out of the public eye, there are still plenty of other ways to show off the opulence associated with owning a superyacht.

From swimming pools and helicopter pads to on-board cinemas and spas, there are many luxurious amenities that can make a superyacht the envy of any jet setter.

Final Thoughts

Superyachts are a symbol of luxury and status, and the list of yacht owners reads like a who’s who of billionaires.

From the Emir of Qatar’s world-record breaking $400 million yacht to Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s vessel with a helicopter pad and on-board spa, the amenities of these luxury vessels are truly stunning.

With prices ranging from $30 million to over $400 million, owning a superyacht is an expensive endeavor.

Whether you’re looking to purchase one or just curious to learn more about the owners and their amenities, this guide will provide you with all the information you need to stay up to date with the superyacht scene.

Billionaire Auto Dealer to Buy Guo Wengui’s Yacht for $24 Million

By Alex Wolf

Alex Wolf

Billionaire auto dealership mogul Herb Chambers agreed to purchase the Lady May, a luxury yacht upon which Trump adviser Steve Bannon was arrested in 2020, from the bankruptcy estate of federally-indicted Chinese exile Guo Wengui.

Herb Chambers Yachting LLC, a company owned by the eponymous businessman, submitted the winning bid of $24 million to buy the 150-foot vessel out of Chapter 11, according to filings Friday in the US Bankruptcy Court for the District of Connecticut.

The private sale agreement “represents the highest and best bid obtained after an extensive marketing campaign” and competitive bidding process that began in late ...

Mom of baby rescued from capsized superyacht the bayesian describes how she saved little girl from wreck.

A brave British mom who made it out alive after a superyacht sank off the coast of Italy said she used “all her strength” to hold her 1-year-old daughter above her head to save her from drowning.

Charlotte Golunski, 36, saved her daughter, Sophia, from the sinking ship after it capsized in the port of Porticello early Monday during a violent sunrise storm.

The mom recounted the horrifying experience, saying she “held her afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning,” the Times UK reported , citing La Repubblica.

Coast Guard

“It was all dark. In the water, I couldn’t keep my eyes open. I screamed for help but all I could hear around me was the screams of others.”

Golunski said her family survived because they were on deck when the boat sank after being woken by “thunder, lightning and waves that made our boat dance.”

“It was the end of the world and my husband and I were struggling to stand up,” she recalled.

yacht

As the ship sank, she and her family were thrown into the unforgiving sea, where she lost her daughter “for two seconds” before quickly locating her and holding her close.

“Many were shouting, and luckily the lifeboat inflated and 11 of us were able to climb in,” she added.

Golunski, her partner, James Emsilie, and Sophia were all taken to the hospital for treatment.

What to know after a tornado sank the yacht Bayesian off the coast of Sicily, leaving one dead and six missing:

  • A superyacht capsized off the coast of Sicily after a tornado hit the area early Monday, killing one passenger and leaving five others missing — including Michael Lynch, a tech tycoon known as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” officials said.
  • Lynch had invited guests from the legal firm that represented him, Clifford Chance, and Invoke Capital, his own company, on the voyage,  according to the Telegraph .
  • Captain James Catfield, who piloted the 184-foot, British-flagged craft, was among the 15 crew members and passengers to survive after the tornado struck Monday before sunrise.
  • Security camera footage shot from 650 feet from where the  Bayesian sank Monday  shows it slowly disappearing.
  • Italian authorities have said the chances of the passengers surviving the disaster was very small, but “never say never.”

Sunken yacht in Italy

The family had been guests of her boss on the boat, she said, adding that she wasn’t sure who had been saved yet.

“We left London in a group of nine or 10 with Sophia — all employees and collaborators of our software company. We were all guests of our boss, a good person, extraordinary, who they may not yet have saved,” she said.

Fifteen people, including the family, were rescued from the wreck early Monday.

Six others — including two Americans — are still missing at sea, while one body, believed to belong to the ship’s chef, was found near the wreck, local media reported.

Rescuers

Among those missing still were the ship’s owner, British tech tycoon Mike Lynch , according to reports.

Three other Britons, two Americans and one Canadian were also missing,  the Guardian reported .

The captain is among the survivors,  an Italian coast guard spokesperson told CNN.

A helicopter and rescue boats from the coast guard, carabinieri, fire rescue and civil protection service were at the scene early Monday searching for those who had not been accounted for,  according to the Australian Associated Press.

The massive yacht, the Bayesian, flies under the British flag and can reach a maximum speed of 15 knots (17 mph).

Twelve of its passengers were guests while 10 were crew.

Feadship's 46-metre 'Lady May' Enters Market

By Heather Collier

Feadship's 46.22-metre Lady May has officially entered the market. After undergoing an extensive refit and repaint in 2019, she is now for sale and in perfect condition for her future owner.

Delivered in 2014 from Feadship 's Aalsmeer shipyard, Lady May features an aluminium hull and superstructure, with naval architecture and exterior design penned by Dubois.

Previously named 'Como', she has since had a comprehensive makeover, featuring elegant, wraparound glass and a recessed wheelhouse to create a sleek, streamlined exterior profile.

She can comfortably accommodate up to 10 guests in 5 staterooms, and house up to 8 crew members. Her master suite can be found on the Main Deck, with panoramic, uninterrupted views of the ocean. All remaining cabins can be located on the Lower Deck.

With a modern, stylish interior designed by RWD, she has a number of unique elements that define her inner spaces, including a stunning crystal chandelier and a rotating floor in the Main Saloon, as well as expansive mirrors expertly placed throughout, creating the illusion of a much more generous space, encompassed by dancing rays of light from fixtures above.

Her exterior spaces boast a bar which transcends from within the Main Lounge, along with an al fresco dining space on the aft deck for relaxing dinners, cocktails or entertainment.

In terms of performance, Lady May has a cruising speed of 15 knots and a top speed of 19 knots.

Steve Jobs' former yacht Venus collided with another superyacht off the coast of Naples

  • Venus, the yacht built for Steve Jobs , collided with another yacht off Italy's coast.
  • It's unclear which yacht struck which or when exactly the crash occurred.
  • With a minimalist design, Venus is one of the world's most iconic superyachts.

Insider Today

Venus, Steve Jobs' former superyacht — now owned by his wife, the philanthropist and investor Laurene Powell Jobs — has collided with another superyacht off of the Italian coast.

A spokesperson from Powell Jobs' Emerson Collective who spoke with a crewmember confirmed to Business Insider that Venus, the 78-meter yacht Steve Jobs commissioned, had collided with Lady Moura, a 105-meter yacht. The collision happened on July 22 off the coast of Naples, Italy.

The spokesperson said that only crew were onboard the yacht and that both boats were anchored when a sudden change of wind led to the collision.

Venus is cruising in the Ligurian Sea, while Lady Moura made its way to Mykonos on Wednesday, based on publicly available tracking data from Marine Traffic.

Videos posted on social media show the strikingly minimalist Venus and the Lady Moura coming into contact. It's not clear from the videos which superyacht struck which, though someone who said they were aboard the Lady Moura seemed to blame Venus' crew on social media, SuperYacht Times reported. The person said the damage was "only a scratch, albeit a significant one that will be costly to repair."

Others on social media said that the Venus appeared to be moored and that Lady Moura seemed to have swung into the boat. BI hasn't been able to independently verify either claim.

The Italian Marina Militare didn't respond to a request for comment from Business Insider. The owner of the Lady Moura couldn't be reached.

No matter how little damage may have been done, insurance will probably cover it. Yacht insurance , which can cost six figures each month, is one of the largest costs incurred by yacht owners.

Venus, built by the top yacht-builder Feadship, was delivered after Jobs died in 2011 and was worth $130 million upon completion. The Apple cofounder was heavily involved in the design process alongside the French architect and decorator Philippe Starck.

"Venus comes from the philosophy of minimum," Starck said of her design. "The elegance of the minimum, approaching dematerialization."

Jobs and Starck spent four years working on her design, the designer told Vanity Fair , holding monthly meetings to discuss her specifications. She has six identical cabins, was built to maximize absolute silence, and, upon delivery, included the most up-to-date technology.

"There will never again be a boat of that quality again. Because never again will two madmen come together to accomplish such a task," Starck told the magazine. "It was not a yacht that Steve and I were constructing, we were embarked on a philosophical action, implemented according to a quasi-religious process. We formed a single brain with four lobes." August 7, 2024 — This story has been updated with a statement from a Laurene Powell Jobs spokesperson.

It was a fun cruise on a beautiful day. Service was good. Food was good. Ship is larger than others so you could walk and explore. Definitely will go again

Dinner on the Lady Caroline. Plus a Royal Caribbean Travel Agent event Our hostess Kathy Vesely Killen BDM for RCC invited us. myself and a few coworkers from AAA Travel Agency.. So classy, the ship had engine trouble and we never left the dock. Better to be stuck here then out in the lake. She asked us to stay have dinner and we'll do over another time. She gave a presentation on the new ships for Royal Caribbean Cruise she has been out business manager for years. If interested in a 3-4 day fun cruise call me! Overall the servers did well seeing the ship never left dock. Our Hostess was amazing. The food was ok- banquet food, our problem was tables in order to get you own dish by 1-20 and we were at Table 19. Beautiful evening thanks to the Cleveland skyline.....at the dock :)

Lady Caroline has replaced the Nautica Queen that is retired. It's spacious. Four floors are used for large group entertainment. We went with a large group. First floor is walk in, and has tables and a baby grand piano. Second floor was dining. Very nice heavy hors-d'oeruvres were dinner. Specially drinks were delicious. Service was excellent. Third floor was a large dance floor with seating, and a bar. Fourth floor was the open top with spectacular views of the city. Our cruise on Lake Erie and the Cuyahoga River was about two hours, and docked for an hour. We were there from 5-8 p.m. I would go again.

First of all, the boat/ship was extremely Hot and intolerable. I asked for accommodation if a fan was available and was told no. Furthermore my table and guest were seated next to the engine room vent, which was giving off more heat. The waitress that had our table looked tired from all the running around that she forgot to bring beverage orders to the table. The food was tasteless, bland and dry. I was bothered by the fact that the menu was short and limited with 1 or 2 options available for vegan diets. I walked around to access just how hot the ship was and the 1st floor which primarily had senior citizens. Everybody was fanning themselves with the menu. The second floor had air completely and the 3rd level was humid with the windows open. Why introduce a new ship that is sub-standard to the Nautica. Nautica was way better, services were great, food was good with many options, even for vegans. The price does not equate to the level of service and quality that was given. I am very disappointed with cruise and just want anyone else deciding to take this cruise to please be aware. If this is considered an upgrade to the Nautica, then everyone run. One concerning thing, I noticed is that I never saw any AED station on the walls on each floor. For the hundreds of dollars I just spent on this floppy cruise is disturbing, unacceptable, and poses a safety issue due to the temperatures, lazi fair attitudes of service staff. Refunding me on half of this cruise would be the courtesy thing to do, to make this right.

I had a group of 50 guests We were on the oldies luncheon cruise. The staff was very pleasant. The place was beautiful, but the food that they served us was horrible. It did not even look appetizing and it had no taste whatsoever. I was advised that they did not have a catering company, but that they had a chef that prepared the food , and I'm sure he tasted the food he would not have served that that particular day the fish was awful and tasteless as well as the macaroni and cheese and the potatoes which were mashed potatoes, corn out of the can tasteless the head of chicken patty that was not edible at all in my opinion And the worst was the stuffed cabbage. It looked disgusting and with all of that on a plate actually felt like out of the window however, the salad was delicious and so was the bread. The iced tea was good, but my entire party was so disgusted with the food we all admitted that as soon as we left there, we had to go to other restaurants And fast food places to try to eat something because we were hungry. The food was just awful and my opinion and the opinion of many of my other guest $60 is a hefty price for awful food these days .. I really can't see myself returning to that establishment. The boat was beautiful. and the staff was very nice and accommodating, but the chef needs to step his game up.

Salad first with only one type of dressing. Balsamic. Buffet offered: green beans with carrots-Al dente. Mashed potatoes with chives, chicken breast, meat loaf, crab cakes and rolls also pound cake with whipped cream and strawberries. Very pleasant. Waitress needed to be friendly but other waitresses assisted where she fell short. DJ was good. Atmosphere was noisy until guests went to dance. Not a bad lunch affair. Caterer could work on flavors though!

The food was pretty good. The prime rib was a little dryer and we done more than I would like. The fish was amazing and the cheesecake was really good. The pork was dry and the chicken was dry.

Exceptional service, value and FUN with out group of 70-80 people on Lady Caroline's first trip. Staff was amazing, getting drinks, and working through the buffet line. Excellent entrees, really tasty fish and chicken. We explored and found the dance floor- DJ was perfect!

I have been disappointed by them twice! The ship never sailed! Yet they charged full price! Beautiful ship and good food but the purpose of the outing was to cruise not just eat!

Very good experience, the food was buffet style . Cocktails are available. Truly had a great lunch. Would recommend.

On board 80m Excellence with American businessman Herb Chambers

Get to know the owner of 80 metre Abeking & Rasmussen superyacht Excellence, in this exclusive interview with American businessman Herb Chambers...

Super Bowl 2020 was a special weekend in Miami. Beneath the glass towers glittering in the sun was an equally glittering line-up of the biggest and best superyachts launched in 2019. There was the 93-metre Feadship Lady S , Oceanco’s 109-metre Bravo Eugenia and 90-metre DreAMBoat , while Germany was represented in the shape of Lürssen’s 95-metre Madsummer . However there was one notable exception to this stellar procession – easily the most eye-catching superyacht launched last year: 80-metre Excellence .

“I am not into sports,” explains Herb Chambers, her owner, as we chat in his office near Boston a few days before the big hoopla in Miami. What he loves are cars, boats and, many years after making it big in the business world, work. “It’s something I enjoy,” he says. “People ask, ‘Why do you work so much?’ and I reply, ‘I really don’t work, I do what I love to do’.”

That’s why we meet in a cloudy Boston in January rather than, say, St Barths, one of his favourite Caribbean destinations. Chambers, who has established one of the largest car dealership franchises in the US, keeps a regular work schedule. He doesn’t sell cars – never has – but he likes to stay involved with the day-to-day management of the company.

The Herb Chambers Companies owns about 60 dealerships employing around 2,500 people within a 160-kilometre radius of Boston and represents practically every brand. The local newspaper says his company sells more cars than any other in New England.

Chambers’ office is on the second floor of a Mercedes-Benz dealership in Somerville, a neighbourhood of Boston. The top floor is a helipad, which allows him to shave hours off the commute from his weekend residence in Connecticut. Near the reception desk is a large framed picture of his new Excellence with the signature of the craftsmen involved in her construction at Abeking & Rasmussen ; a stack of magazines is on the table, including the December issue of BOAT International with Excellence on the cover, and the latest Boston magazine, which belongs to a friend. Awards that his company has won, including one for being one of the area’s top employers, catch the light from a spotlight shining on a nearby cabinet.

Downstairs, aside from the squeaky-clean showroom filled with the latest Mercedes cars, is the service centre. The polished floor has hardly a tyre mark and the space smells like freshly brewed coffee. Good service is at the heart of what his company does. “We don’t want to sell people anything,” he says. “We want to help them buy things that they want and hopefully they will love us for that.”

He got into the car business in 1985, buying an Oldsmobile-Cadillac dealership where he had received poor service. He knew he could do better and so he did.

But his first fortune wasn’t made in cars – it was in photocopiers. In the early 1960s, Chambers was fresh out of the US Navy, where he had been an aviation electrician, and looking for a job when he saw an ad in The Boston Globe seeking a photocopier repairman. Fixing things sounded like something he might want to do, although he wasn’t quite sure what the job entailed. “No one knew what photocopying was back then. I thought a copy machine was something to copy photos,” he says with a laugh.

He talked himself into the job – a gift he had picked up in his youth. “I grew up in a very blue-collar neighbourhood. My father was a commercial artist and we lived with my grandmother, so we never had a lot of money,” he says. “I always had a job from the time I was 13 years old.” One of his first was at a Stop & Shop supermarket where he was hired after lying about his age. He liked working much more than school. “The only thing I enjoyed about school was mathematics,” he says.

During his stint as a copier repairman, he learned pretty quickly that people selling copiers were making much more money, and he parlayed himself into a sales job. “I was a pretty good salesman; I am a pretty good salesman today,” he says with a smile, “but only because I heard the word ‘no’ so many times in my life.” He was also at a disadvantage because he was shy. “I was afraid to talk to people,” he says, “[but] I knew I could work harder than most salespeople and I outworked them.”

Around the time the kid from Dorchester, Boston, started his first company, at the age of 22, he enrolled in a 12-week training course at Dale Carnegie to overcome his shyness. “It was one of the best things I’ve ever done.”

The photocopier business was changing, and he saw the opportunity. “Copy machines were just becoming popular and I was in the right place, certainly at the right time, and I built the company to be the largest photocopier distributor in America.”

After a few years he was finally in a position to indulge his long fascination with cars and boats, which he had loved from an early age. He remembers going to a boat show in Boston with his father in the early 1950s, when he was 10 or 11 years old, and becoming enthralled with a futuristic- looking motorboat built by the Outboard Marine Corporation. “Why don’t we buy one of these?” he asked his father, who gave a response typical of parents seeking to appease a child: “We’ll look at it next year.” Meanwhile, when he fell for a curvaceous Cadillac convertible he’d seen for sale down the street and asked why they did not replace their old Buick with it, he got the same answer from his mother. “Then I got a job at 13 years old, and I realised what money was,” he says, but the experience didn’t dim his desire to own these beautiful, shiny machines.

Summer times, which he spent at his grandmother’s cottage south of Boston, gave him a chance to get on the water. He had a friend with a small motorboat and they went exploring in it. A few years after founding his company A-Copy America, he bought his first boat, a used nine-metre flybridge motor yacht built by Trojan. “I paid $10,000 [$7,720] for it; I remember it very clearly,” he says. “It was all the money I had.

“My company continued to do well, so I got a bigger boat, and a bigger boat, and a bigger boat, and in between all those boats, I probably owned a half dozen Cigarette boats, two or three Magnums and a Formula boat. I’ve always had this passion for boats. I love them,” says

Chambers, whose current fleet comprises his 80-metre Abeking & Rasmussen Excellence , a Mangusta 94 and a 47-metre Feadship (formerly known as Detroit Eagle and Sea Racer ). He remembers the progression from the Trojan to a 12-metre Chris-Craft, a 14-metre Concorde and then a 16-metre Hatteras.

His first experience with a superyacht was on board an acquaintance’s Feadship docked near his boat in Connecticut. “I was in awe of that boat,” he says. When the owner, a car salesman and former politician, invited him on board he remembers being intimidated. “I was so nervous, I did not know where to sit, I did not want to touch anything and he said to me, ‘One day you will have one of these,’ and I said, ‘I know I will never have one of these’.”

His first big yacht, built in 1979, was a 25-metre custom-built Broward with a modern interior and two turbocharged GM diesel engines. He named it A-Copy , after his company. “To me, at the time, it was like a baby Feadship,” he says. “It was a great boat. I chartered it and it was pretty popular.” Then came the windfall from the sale of his business in 1983, and just three years later his friend’s prediction came true as Chambers took delivery of his first Feadship, a 40 metre, the first Excellence .

The name of the yacht was inspired by a bestselling book by Tom Peters and Robert Waterman that he was reading at the time, In Search of Excellence . He made the boat available for charter, as he has all the following ones – Excellence II (another Feadship), Excellence III (his first Abeking) and V (he built but never owned Excellence IV , as it was bought mid-construction by another owner who liked it). The newest Excellence (“I stopped numbering the boats because it was getting kind of silly”) is on the charter market as well.

The name Excellence comes with certain responsibilities, he admits. “We tell people when they come to work on her, ‘She is not called Average.’ Just the name of the boat puts a lot of pressure on you. The boat needs to be excellent all the time.”

He buys and builds boats for pleasure, and he keeps an eye on the market by reading all the boat magazines, but it is also a business. “Chartering is important to me because the boats are so expensive to run and everything in my world has a price/ value relationship. I really like the value of having the yacht, but I don’t like what it costs to do it, and by chartering, I can reduce that price. Could I have the boat, use it and not charter it? Yes I could, but to me the value would not be there,” he says.

The new Excellence , designed inside and out by Winch Design, is a big departure from all of his previous yachts and is in no way average. The yacht’s topsides are almost entirely glass and its elongated hull ends in a thin reverse bow. He loved his previous boat, the 60-metre Abeking Excellence V , which had more classic lines, but he had warmed to the idea of a different approach when he saw a concept by the award-winning British designer. “I kept thinking about how I could have bigger windows, more glass. And when I saw Andrew Winch’s rendering, I thought that could be the answer, but with some modification to it.” He also wanted a yacht that would not look like any other, and on a recent visit to St Barths he was pleased to spot Excellence from a significant distance.

He is happy with the response he’s received so far and the yacht, which is under the command of Captain Ray Shore (Chambers’ captain for more than 30 years), has already chartered well. He knows why. “There is no greater luxury than being on a yacht where you get personalised service and you don’t have to wait for anything,” he says. “When you have a yacht with a crew, you can pretty much have whatever it is you want 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”

They say the harder you work, the luckier you get and this is true of Chambers. He looks back on his success with the humility of a man who has had to earn every cent. “I’m basically just a hard- working guy who has been very fortunate to be in the right place at the right time.”

Eilish and her team were “horrified” at their inclusion in the story, three top-level sources told  Variety .

Eilish has minimal personal knowledge of Wasserman himself, two insiders said. She had long been represented by Tom Windish, an agent who began working with Eilish at Paradigm Talent Agency (Wasserman acquired and ingested the Paradigm music group in 2021). The star and her advisors had no desire to be associated with the agency after the report, the sources added.

“While grateful to their former live booking agents at Wasserman, Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell have opted to have film, TV and music handled by the same agency, WME, moving forward,” a spokesperson for Eilish told  Variety . Wasserman had no comment on the matter.

Several sources inside the LA28 organization, a nonprofit, were vexed by the optics of Daily Mail report, sources said. The story specifically named Patricia Feau, a former assistant to NBCUniversal executive Ron Meyer who later ran Wasserman’s office, as one of the employees who had an affair with the latter. Feau denied the affair with Wasserman to the Daily Mail. She spent almost eight years in Wasserman’s employ as his assistant, before being named Vice President of Host City Relations for LA28 in 2019, according to her LinkedIn page. Tax documents revealed, per the Daily Mail, that Feau earns $350,000 per year.

Feau, a native of Inglewood, Calif., acted as a volunteer during L.A.’s Olympic bidding process, a source close to Wasserman said. After the city won the bid, she and two other Wasserman employees were hired as full-time LA28 staffers. Compensation for all three was reviewed by an independent consultant and approved by the LA28 Board of Directors, the insider noted.

A spokesperson for LA28 had no comment on the matter but did confirm that the organization would not be conducting an internal investigation over the Daily Mail report.

For all his decades among the L.A.-based jet set, Wasserman has kept a carefully curated public profile. A booster for the Democratic party just like his grandfather, Wasserman was more likely to be snapped on David Geffen’s yacht The Rising Sun than on any red carpet. Wasserman recently parted ways with his communications advisor of almost 20 years, Melissa Zukerman, who resigned in May.

He’s been especially visible this year. His splashy appearance at the Met Gala in May, which cost about around $750,000 for a table according to one source who cut a similar check, secured a table for Wasserman and girlfriend Jenny Chandler to rub shoulders with models, movie stars and Anna Wintour. Wasserman’s recent 50 th  birthday, a Gatsby-level bash at Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar, was widely covered for its indulgences – including a re-creation of the landmark Beverly Hills deli Nate ‘n Al’s, though this pop-up was named for Wasserman and his grandfather (“Lew ‘n Casey”). Wasserman client Imagine Dragons performed. Bob Iger, Bill Clinton and Nancy Pelosi all showed up to celebrate.

World News | Queen Elizabeth thought Trump was ‘very rude,’ had ‘arrangement’ with Melania: book

Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, US President Donald Trump, US First Lady Melania Trump pose for a photograph ahead of a State Banquet in the ballroom at Buckingham Palace in central London on June 3, 2019, on the first day of the US president and First Lady's three-day State Visit to the UK. - Britain rolled out the red carpet for US President Donald Trump on June 3 as he arrived in Britain for a state visit already overshadowed by his outspoken remarks on Brexit. Indeed, the queen reportedly found the 45th president to be “very rude,” according to the book, “A Voyage Around The Queen,” by veteran British journalist Craig Brown. The book has been serialized in the Daily Mail this week.

Trump visited the U.K. twice in 2018 and 2019. A few weeks after one of those visits, the queen confided her true feelings about Trump to “a lunch guest,” Brown reported. She said she was especially put off by the way the former reality TV star couldn’t stop looking over her shoulder, as if he was in search of others he might find more interesting, Brown wrote.

Known as an astute judge of character, Elizabeth also wondered about his marriage to Melania Trump, a Slovenian former model who is his third wife, Brown reported.

WINDSOR, ENGLAND - JULY 13: Queen Elizabeth II, President of the United States, Donald Trump and First Lady, Melania Trump walk from the Quadrangle after inspecting an honour guard at Windsor Castle on July 13, 2018 in Windsor, England. Her Majesty welcomed the President and Mrs Trump at the dais in the Quadrangle of the Castle. A Guard of Honour, formed of the Coldstream Guards, gave a Royal Salute and the US National Anthem was played. “She also believed President Trump ‘must have some sort of arrangement’ with his wife Melania, or else why would she have remained married to him?” Brown said about the former first lady, who is 24 years younger than her husband.

“Over the course of her reign, Her Majesty entertained many controversial foreign leaders, including Bashar al-Assad, Robert Mugabe, Idi Amin, Donald Trump, Emperor Hirohito and Vladimir Putin,” Brown wrote. “She may not have found their company convivial; upon their departure, she may even have voiced a discreet word of disapproval.”

But Elizabeth would only reveal those opinions to people very close to her, if at all, according to Daily Mail columnist Richard Kay . She was famous for her discretion, which make the revelations in Brown’s book pretty astonishing and “bizarre,” Kay said. The long-serving monarch was especially firm about never speaking critically about any visiting head of state, “no matter how ghastly” they could be, Kay wrote.

But once in a while, her views would become known, Kate acknowledged, including that she thought one of her prime ministers, Tony Blair, carried himself with “a certain hauteur,” or when she was heard expressing displeasure over the “rude” and demanding Chinese delegation that accompanied President Xi Jinping.

Now, it appears that the queen’s alleged views on Trump are leaking out in ways he may not expect. The former president showed a lifelong obsession with royalty and often tried to associate his name with members of the British royal family, according to NBC News .

At one point, he falsely claimed that King Charles III and his first wife, the late Princess Diana, sent him $50,000 to become charter members of his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, NBC News reported. Trump also famously said he tried to date Diana, post-divorce, though she reportedly said that he gave her “the creeps.”

When it came to Elizabeth II, Trump spoke in reverential tones, the Daily Mail reported. He and former First Lady Melania Trump first met the queen for tea at Windsor Castle in July 2018 and then became guests for a full-blown state visit the following year. He said he admired her personally and for her sense of duty.

“For his part, Donald Trump was confident he had been her favorite guest ever,” Brown wrote. Trump was quoted on Fox News, saying, “There are those that say they have never seen the queen have a better time, a more animated time” than in his company. “Then I got criticized for it, because they said we were having too much fun,” he added.

Brown is “an upper class Old Etonian” and elite “insider,” who worked as a Parliamentary sketch writer and was a contributor to the celebrated British scandal-and-satire magazine Private Eye, according to the Daily Beast, which said Brown is “well-connected.”

The Daily Mail pointed to some issues that came up during Trump and the queen’s first meeting in July 2018 at Windsor Castle, which could have shaped the queen’s opinion.

The visit “was mired in controversy,” the Daily Mail reported. Anti-Trump protesters crowded the streets of London, and a giant “baby blimp” — a massive balloon depicting Trump as a baby — was given permission to float in that year. Due to the “political toxicity” surrounding Trump’s administration, the president was not invited to a “state visit” but to what was classified as a “working visit,” which meant little in the way of pomp and pageantry, the Daily Mail also said.

It was remarked upon at the time that Trump kept the then-92-year-old monarch waiting for 10 minutes in the 80-degree heat outside Windsor Castle. For a ceremonial inspection of the queen’s guard of honor, Trump repeatedly broke protocol by walking in front of the queen, the Daily Mail said. He also forced her to sidestep to get alongside him.

Trump got his state dinner at Buckingham Palace the following year, and his four adult children — Ivanka, Donald Trump Jr., Eric and Tiffany — were invited to come along.

The Daily Mail said Trump was on his best behavior during that visit, and it was blunder-free until the president gave the queen a toast, praising her as a “great, great woman” while placing his hand on her back — again breaking protocol.

The Daily Mail said that Buckingham Palace has not commented on Brown’s claims. Fiona Hill, a former White House adviser, has said that Trump was “awestruck” by the queen, and saw a meeting with her as a sign that he ‘had made it in life,” the Daily Mail reported.

When Elizabeth II died in September 2022, he issued a statement saying that he and his wife would “always cherish our time together with the queen and never forget Her Majesty’s generous friendship, great wisdom and wonderful sense of humor.”

Trump added: “What a grand and beautiful lady she was – there was nobody like her!”

Can Harris Keep the Peace Among Progressives and C.E.O.s?

The vice president garnered public endorsements from progressives at the Democratic National Convention, but she must also keep corporate supporters on board.

By Andrew Ross Sorkin Ravi Mattu Bernhard Warner Sarah Kessler Michael J. de la Merced Lauren Hirsch Ephrat Livni and Benjamin Mullin

A large crowd of people, including Vice President Kamala Harris and President Biden, cheer from a stage.

United, so far

Democrats rallied around Vice President Kamala Harris on the first night of their national convention, as the party seeks to hold together a coalition of progressives, labor leaders and big corporate donors.

Speaking at last night’s event were President Biden, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York , labor representatives and Hillary Clinton. The question is how long that group can stick together.

Progressives appear to be largely sticking with Harris, as more details emerged about “ Kamalanomics .” She appears likely to keep much of Biden’s economic agenda, while extending incentives for home buyers. Notably, she also called for raising the corporate tax rate to 28 percent, from 21 percent.

Union leaders, who represent a key voting bloc in battleground states, took the stage to throw their support behind Harris as well. (Not present: Sean O’Brien , the president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, who spoke at the Republican National Convention last month, but whom D.N.C. organizers appear to have snubbed.)

Donald Trump is fighting back, telling factory workers in Pennsylvania on Monday that Harris is “ an economy wrecker .”

Will Harris’s supporters in the corporate world stay on board as well? So far, she appears to have maintained the backing of well-heeled business leaders, including the Palantir co-founder Alex Karp . Big donors have continued to give to her campaign at events across the country and are showing up in force at the Democratic convention.

But some donors remain wary of how far left her presidency would tack, including on antitrust. At the same time, the food industry has pushed back against Harris’s proposal for a federal ban on price gouging in the grocery aisle, joining some economists who also question the plan’s effectiveness.

Biden delivered a strong endorsement for Harris, giving a speech last night that was almost unthinkable a month ago. There were no signs of the intraparty pressure that swirled around the president before he dropped out of the race. Instead, he gave Harris his backing, calling her “tough,” “experienced,” and a person of “enormous integrity.” Choosing her as his vice president, he added, “was the best decision I made my whole career.”

One wild card is the war in Gaza, a divisive topic among Democrats. Pro-Palestinian protesters were in the spotlight outside the convention arena on Monday, but pressure from the issue could ease after Israel agreed to a Biden administration proposal for a cease-fire. Ocasio-Cortez, a vocal critic of the war in Gaza, was quick to credit Harris for “working tirelessly” on a deal.

Up on Tuesday: Barack Obama; Michelle Obama, the former first lady; and Gov. JB Pritzker of Illinois .

In other election news: The tech investor Ron Conway said he would cut ties to a network of crypto donors after it introduced plans to defeat Senator Sherrod Brown, Democrat of Ohio, the chairman of the Senate Banking Committee. And Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s campaign is nearly broke .

HERE’S WHAT’S HAPPENING

Investors eye another market record. S&P 500 futures were rising this morning as the benchmark index rides an eight-day winning streak, its longest since November and within reach of its July record high. Investors have grown bullish on risky assets as concerns about a recession recede, even as Americans worry about losing their jobs . Another bullish sign: oil prices have fallen , helped by potential progress in Gaza cease-fire talks.

Carl Icahn will pay $2 million to settle with the S.E.C. The billionaire investor reached the deal to resolve charges that he hadn’t informed investors that he had personally pledged his own stock in Icahn Enterprises as collateral for huge margin loans. Icahn Enterprises is under pressure from Hindenburg Research, a short-seller firm that has questioned its finances; Icahn’s company denies the firm’s accusations.

Harley-Davidson pulls back from D.E.I. The motorcycle maker scrapped several initiatives related to diversity, equity and inclusion, including around employee training and spending goals for minority-owned suppliers, after coming under pressure from Robby Starbuck, a conservative activist. Starbuck had also criticized Deere, Polaris and Tractor Supply, which also abandoned their D.E.I. goals.

Layoffs and tariffs bruise the auto sector. General Motors said it planned to lay off more than 1,000 employees in its software and services unit, a division that includes its OnStar connected-car business, as it looks to cut costs. Separately, the European Commission has announced an additional 9 percent tariff on Teslas made in China. It’s a smaller levy than those faced by other Chinese automakers, but comes as demand for electric vehicles slows amid a growing East-West trade war.

Bronfman throws his hat into the ring

It’s official: Edgar Bronfman Jr., the former C.E.O. of Warner Music Group, has submitted a $4.3 billion bid to take control of Paramount, threatening to bust up the entertainment company’s existing agreement with Skydance .

It’s the latest twist for Paramount, whose future has been uncertain for months amid deal drama. A big question is what Shari Redstone, the company’s controlling shareholder, will do next.

What Bronfman is offering: The mogul (whose backers include Steven Paul, a producer behind the “Baby Geniuses” movie franchise) would buy out National Amusements, the vehicle through which Redstone controls Paramount, as well as a stake in Paramount itself.

The Times’s Ben Mullin and DealBook’s Lauren Hirsch report that Bronfman is interested in becoming Paramount’s C.E.O., and has met with Redstone — with whom he’s friendly — about his bid.

Bronfman is taking advantage of a “go-shop” provision in the Skydance deal. That provision was baked into Skydance’s complicated takeover plan, in which the studio would buy National Amusements for $1.75 billion. It would also spend about $8 billion on Paramount, later merging with the bigger company, which would remain publicly traded. (Redstone would get a premium for her supervoting shares in Paramount.)

Many Paramount shareholders pushed back against the Skydance deal, arguing that it diluted their holdings too much and undervalued their shares. To address those concerns and potentially head off litigation, Skydance and Paramount agreed on the 45-day go-shop provision to let Paramount find better offers.

That provision ends on Wednesday, though it could be extended by two weeks if a special committee of Paramount’s board decides the Bronfman bid could lead to a superior offer. ( Bloomberg reports that is likely to happen.)

Negotiators on the Paramount board have reason to take Bronfman’s bid seriously. If they don’t, that could provide litigious investors more grounds to sue.

Moreover, Bronfman also has experience running a public company. And Paramount is undertaking some of the initiatives that Skydance plans to carry out, including significant cost-cutting , which means that it is arguably in better shape than it was two months ago.

But they may not want to risk losing the bird in hand . Skydance and its chief, David Ellison, have deep pockets and have committed to long-term investments in Paramount.

While some shareholders dislike Skydance’s bid, they at least have the chance to cash out. And Redstone may prefer a deal that gives her a premium.

“Brian is not taking the train from Newport or flying JetBlue.”

A British tech mogul goes missing

Only two months ago, the British software mogul Mike Lynch had won acquittal in the United States on fraud charges, a milestone in his decade-long odyssey to clear his name after being accused of running one of the biggest frauds in Silicon Valley history.

But as of this morning, Lynch — along with five others, including his 18-year-old daughter, as well as a prominent New York lawyer and a Morgan Stanley executive — remain unaccounted for, after a luxury yacht sank off the coast of Sicily on Monday.

The latest: Italian rescue divers resumed their search on Tuesday. All told, 22 passengers had been on the Bayesian, a 180-foot sailing vessel anchored offshore near the port of Porticello, when it was hit by what witnesses described as a waterspout during a sudden and violent storm.

Fifteen passengers have been rescued, including Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares (who owns the company listed as the Bayesian’s owner); Charlotte Golunski, an employee of Lynch’s venture capital firm; and Golunski’s 1-year-old daughter.

Still missing: Lynch; his daughter Hannah; Chris Morvillo, a partner at the law firm Clifford Chance who helped lead Lynch’s legal defense; Morvillo’s wife; Jonathan Bloomer, a chairman of Morgan Stanley’s international arm and the chair of the insurer Hiscox; and Bloomer’s wife.

Lynch was plotting a comeback after a yearslong legal ordeal. The entrepreneur became one of Britain’s best-known tech executives after he built Autonomy, a business software company, into a multibillion-dollar enterprise. In 2011, he sold it for $11 billion — an astonishing 60 percent premium — to Hewlett-Packard.

But HP investors revolted against the deal, and the tech company wrote down the deal by $8.8 billion. HP ousted its C.E.O. and, shortly after, Lynch himself; its next leader, Meg Whitman, accused him and other Autonomy executives of fraud. American prosecutors later filed criminal charges against him.

Lynch faced numerous setbacks — a British judge found him liable in a civil lawsuit filed by HP, and he was extradited to the U.S. despite appeals to the British government. He was confined to a townhouse in San Francisco, and many close to him believed he faced long odds in his U.S. trial, which began in March and lasted three months.

But a jury cleared Lynch after two days of deliberations, allowing him to return to Britain and resume his career. Even during his trial, he remained in touch with his venture capital firm and with researchers in artificial intelligence. (In an eerie coincidence, Stephen Chamberlain, a former Autonomy executive who was Lynch’s co-defendant, died on Saturday after being hit by a car.)

The trip on the Bayesian — whose name may allude to Thomas Bayes, an English statistician — was meant to celebrate his legal victory, according to news media reports.
