About International Lightning Class Association

The Lightning truly excels as an affordable racing boat. The rig is simple but offers sophisticated sail shape controls. The hull features a unique hard chine design that combines the stability that provides sail-carrying power, with flat bottom sections that promote planing. At 700 pounds all up, the trailerable centerboard sloop is tough enough to avoid frequent breakdowns, but light enough to plane wildly on the reaches. Membership is diverse with sailors aged 8 to 80+. Many families sail together at top events and it is common to see females make up at least 40% of competitors.

The Lightning is sailed in more than thirteen countries and in the Pan American Games. A World, Master World and Youth World Championships are held every two years. North American, South American and European Championships are held each year as are innumerable regional and District championships. Major regattas attract some of the finest sailors in the world, but you find Class members friendly and the sailmakers’ complete tuning guides helpful at getting you up to speed in a hurry.

The International Lightning Class Association is one of the oldest and best organized class associations in sailboat racing. Its primary purpose is to serve its membership, preserve the integrity of the Lightning and provide high-quality competitive events. In addition, the Lightning Class publishes monthly e-blasts and a quarterly newsletter Flashes with up-to-date regatta news, boat brokerage and ideas on how to get the most out of your Lightning. The professionally managed association and dedicated volunteers are always on hand to assist both current and potential members.

If you’re looking for a boat you can be proud to sail, one that offers dinghy handling with the performance of a sport boat, a refined design that’s free of fads, complete with the technology of today for both racing and day sailing – look at the Lightning.

Inside the Class: Lightning

  • By Dave Reed
  • Updated: February 20, 2017

The master, Ched Proctor, and the kid, 24-year-old skipper Mike Zonnenberg, have never stood shoulder to shoulder alongside the boat that connects through generations past. Proctor might’ve raced against Zonnenberg’s grandfather at some point in his rise to Lightning class greatness. Although, he can’t be so sure.

So many years. So many races. So many faces. “Was he fast? I think so,” says Proctor. “I can’t remember, but I did sell some sails to him.”

But here they stand together at the St. Petersburg YC Sailing Center on the morning of the final day of the 2017 Helly Hansen NOOD Regatta in St. Petersburg. Proctor’s got at least four decades of Lightning sailing experience on him, but it’s Zonnenberg’s team that’s leading the class after two days and three light-air races. Proctor is lurking 5 points behind him on the scoreboard, and while praises the speed and smarts of Zonnenberg and his crew, in true Proctor fashion, he nonplussed of the day’s challenge ahead. He just has to win the race, and put a pile boats between him and kid.

He’s been there, done that.

The one thing Zonnenberg has never done, however, is pick the brain of the elder Proctor. So on this morning, while the race committee hoisted its postponement flag, he got his chance. And what was the first question he asked?

“So Ched…what lights your fire to go sailing after all these years?

“It’s the constant fascination of what little things make a sailboat go a little faster,” he says after a brief contemplation, “it’s a zone type thing . . . it’ a continuous fascination.”

Proctor’s been racing Lightnings since 1984, although he did some crewing in them back in the 70s, and his enduring attraction to the class is simple, he explains to Zonnenberg. “There are a lot of them, they’re essentially the same, and it is always good competition. It’s a nice simple boat, logistically. You show up at a regatta and be ready to sail in an hour. It’s also intellectually challenging. There’s a lot of tweaking and steering technique.”

When pressed to give St. Petersburg local his best advice, he only offers, “I don’t need to give him any speed tips, he’s been showing us a lesson in being in the right place at the right time.”

NOOD

Zonnenberg is a case in point for the Lightning class’s continued efforts to get younger sailors into the boats, and for this reason, says Proctor, the class continues to appeal to new and returning Lightning sailors like Zonnenberg. “It’s a good design and works well in a variety of conditions —you can sail it in thin water and open oceans. When its blowing hard and when it’s tuned right it feels very fast upwind because of you have such control of the rig. The design hasn’t changed, but it has evolved to be a user friendly boat that can be easily tuned to any conditions.” When the Zonnenberg finally asks the thousand-dollar question of how best to sail the boat, Proctor is quick to answer: it’s all about heel angle.

“Because it’s a hard-chined boat,” he says, “if you change the heel angle a little bit, the shape of the boat that the water sees changes dramatically. That was the light that went off to me along time ago. I learned this from Bruce Goldsmith and I asked him questions all the time. And he explained to me that we can change the sail shapes and trim the sails, but all you really need to do is just change the heel of the boat. To me, that’s the most important thing. You have to be very aware in light conditions, it’s changing all the time.”

Taking his own advice to the racecourse today for the one and final race of the excruciatingly light winds on Tampa Bay, Proctor led at the first mark, but gave up his lead on the first run to another Lightning legacy skipper Steve Hayden on the first run. Hunting them down was Zonnenberg, who rounding the second weather mark inches behind Proctor. They battled to to the end, with Proctor nipping him at the finish.

Hayden won the race, and the ultimately the class and the regatta, but it was Zonnenberg who just barely beat the master at this own game. Until next time.

Lightning North American Champs

Published on August 11th, 2024 by Editor -->

David Starck, Jason Lutz, and Adam Starck topped the 70-boat fleet to win the 2024 Lightning North American Championship held August 8-11 in Ridgeway, ON. Additional North American titles were won by Jody Lutz (Master), Elizabeth Starck (Women), and Bobby Starck (Junior).

Sailing conditions were greatly affected by weather systems to the east and west of Lake Erie, which provided breezy conditions and large lake swells. The Lightning North Americans was the USA qualifier for the 2025 World Championship to be held in Athens, Greece next June.

The Lightning Class has been ultra focused on its future which was was evident at the regatta. Forty-three percent of the total fleet were U32 sailors and 37% of the fleet were female sailors. “The future of the class is in the hands of the youth,” observed Class President David Starck. “They are telling us what they want, what they need. It’s no free lunch, but we are listening and reacting.”

Lightning Fleet 50:  A PRSA Fleet Sailing on the Potomac River Since 1943

Established in 1943, Fleet 50 is proud to carry on the tradition of the Lightning as the longest enduring, most competitive and fun one-design racing class in the Washington DC area. We are affiliated with the Potomac River Sailing Association and the International Lightning Class Association .

We currently have about 25 active and semi-active boats.  Our racing schedule runs from the beginning of April through the mid-November each year. The racing season includes an eight-week Sunday Spring and an eight-week Sunday Fall series. In addition we host the Doc Gilbert Potomac Cup in early May (our Dixie District Lightning Regatta) and participate in the PRSA Spring Regatta (Memorial Day weekend) and in the PRSA President’s Cup in September.  Many of our members also travel to Lightning regattas on the International Lightning Class Association regatta circuit .  No fewer than 5 and sometimes as many as 15 boats are out racing on any given Sunday, with many more on the water for our 2-day regattas. After the racing, skippers and crews hang around the grill and trade stories about starts, mark roundings, and other tall tales from the river.

Fleet 50 members display a wide range of sailing experience consisting of seasoned veteran Lightning sailors as well as several first time boat owners. The range of skill levels will challenge serious racers looking for good competition while providing fun competitive camaraderie in the middle and back of the fleet. The more experienced sailors are also always ready and willing to offer advice and instruction to newer sailors looking to improve. Our post race BBQs also have many beers, burgers, and hot dogs to go around.

The skippers in our Lightning Fleet 50 have vast experience buying used but ready-to-race Lightnings (recommended) to major restoration projects (if you are so inclined). They would love to help you buy a Lightning that fits your budget and interests.  If you are interested in Fleet 50, feel free to reach out to us (contact information at the bottom of this page).  You should also feel free to come down to the docks anytime we are scheduled to be out on the water. Someone will always be looking for a crew!

The Boat: The Best of Both Worlds – Family Sailing and World Class Racing

The Lightning is a 19-foot centerboard sloop designed by Sparkman & Stephens as an affordable family day sailing and racing boat. The Lightning Class is the longest operating and best-organized one-design sailing class in the world.  With more than 15,000 hulls built for 500 fleets worldwide, the Lightning has evolved into one of the most popular and competitive one-design racing classes in the world!

The hull features a hard chine and centerboard for stability, with flat bottom sections that promote planing. The simple rig makes it easy to sail but offers plenty of adjustment for sail shape fine-tuning of the mainsail, jib, and spinnaker.  The Lightning is easy to launch and light enough to trailer with ease. In the event of a capsize, she can be righted and sailed dry by her crew.

Normally, raced with a crew of three the boat has plenty of room in the cockpit for two couples or a family to day sail.  Whether racing or day sailing, the Lightning offers a rare combination of performance and stability!

We frequently host regional regattas and welcome inquiries to utilize BCYC facilities to host sailboat racing events.

Connect with us on Facebook To stay in tune with sailboat racing on the Saginaw Bay and the Great Lakes.

We have a number of different racing opportunities as listed below

The BCYC Main and Jib series runs from May to early October each year. The season is split into 3 series: Spring, Summer and Fall. Races are held Wednesday evenings. Races are run in accordance with US Sailing Racing Rules Of Sailing and utilize PHRF handicapping. Participants are slotted into fleets based on PHRF rating and boat type. Race results are announced at the BCYC clubhouse and online after each race. Season awards are presented at a festive, fun BCYC Sailing Banquet held in late October, early November of each year. Registration and entry fees are required.

The Saginaw Bay Lightning Fleet #216 has been located at the Bay City Yacht Club from the very start of the club in the 1950's. At BCYC, the fleet consists of over 12 boats who are active in the fleet racing program which occurs on every Wednesday night from May to September. The Bay City Lightning One Design Series involves a closed race course within a mile of shore and typically consists of 2-3 races each night. The results of each race is recorded and scores are tallied at the end of the season and awards presented.

The Lightning, a 19-foot trailerable centerboard sloop is an affordable family "day sailor" and racing boat. She has evolved into one of the most popular and competitive one-design racing classes in the world for crews of Men, Women, and Juniors alike. The Lightning is easy to launch and sail with a crew of 2-4 people and raced typically with a crew of three, it is also light enough to trailer with ease.

The BCYC Weekend Series runs from June through September of each year. Spinnaker, Cruising and Multhull classes are being offered. The weekend series is the more competitive series hosted by BCYC and consists of a mix of courses: short distance races within the BCYC Racing Buoy Course, long distance races 20+ nm in length that sail to the outer bay, and one night race to Tawas. PHRF handicapping is used. Race results are posted after the race online. Season awards are presented at the year-end BCYC Sailing Banquet. Registration and entry fees are required.

Great Lakes Multihull Championship Regatta

During August of each year, the BCYC looks forward to hosing the Great Lakes Multi Hull Championship Regatta. This regatta draws some of the best multihull sailors in the Midwest and frequently draws national competitors as well.

Restoration of Skaneateles Lightning #167

The Lightning sailboat was designed by the Naval Architectural firm of Sparkman & Stephens in response to a request from John and George Barnes, owners of Skaneateles Boats, Inc. The Barnes brothers were interested in building a one-design sailboat which could be used both for racing as well as family day sailing. The two firms collaborated closely on the design of the sailboat over a two-year period, and prototype Lightning #1 (now part of the watercraft Collection at Mystic Seaport Museum) was built in 1938. The boat received an enthusiastic response from the yachting world, and production began in earnest the following year.
