On board Baglietto's first 40m Fast Jewel superyacht Panam

Beyond the serious and authoritative exterior of Panam lies a playful, inviting interior – as well as some interesting engineering...

Racing across the waves at 31 knots, the full-custom 40.2 metre Baglietto yacht Panam may be built for speed, but she isn’t your average go-fast superyacht. The owner’s brief was for exterior lines that evoked a sense of speed, and with a vertical bow, gunmetal-grey hull and forward-sloping windows, the tri-deck yacht certainly cuts an aggressive line across the water. Yet while edgy aesthetics and high performance were vital to the brief, so too was creating a yacht that would provide the comfort, livability and spaciousness more of a displacement vessel. The owner wanted to have his cake and eat it too, and Baglietto and designer Francesco Paszkowsk i rose to the occasion.

“The owner’s brief was quite challenging,” Carlo Toracca of Baglietto, who served as Panam ’s project manager, admits. “He asked for a sporty performance yacht that maintained the distinctive design elements of the Baglietto tradition, mixed with spacious volumes, modern exterior styling, bespoke design solutions, close contact to the sea, bright and airy interiors and large outdoor and social spaces.”

Panam builds upon Baglietto and Paszkowski’s  long-time partnership of creating high-performance, aluminum planing-hull yachts. In this vein, the yard and designer had experience in spades, but Panam herself represents something new to the Baglietto line-up. Not based on an existing platform, she is a custom project, featuring a brand-new hull form. “Despite our great expertise in boats of this type, this is a full-custom vessel built on a unique and highly challenging platform, which included a vertical bow,” Toracca says.

The square-shaped stern recalls the classic Baglietto styling, no doubt, but to update the exterior lines, this stocky hull merges with a compact profile, trapezoidal windows, and a fierce vertical bow, all of which provide a modern and dynamic look. “The bow features a step near the waterline, which enhances the sporty and aggressive lines,” Paszkowski says.

Combining a sleek exterior with unusual volume for a boat of this size required a series of carefully thought-out choices in terms of materials. One solution was the extensive use of composite materials, with carbon fibre utilised in places such as the hull doors and mast. Other innovations included a swimming pool in fibreglass on the sundeck and the design of a floodable garage that requires no davit to launch and haul the tender.

Transversally fitted aft of the engine room, the tender garage is noteworthy, especially in this size of yacht, and it accommodates a 5.5 metre tender. “It is partially floodable as the lower edge of the garage’s side shell door lies below the waterline,” Toracca explains. “This allows launching and retrieving the tender in a very simple, safe and fast way as the tender itself enters the garage when still floating and is towed inside by a winch and  a balancing cradle.” Baglietto designed the garage so that it can fill with seawater before the shell door opens and immediately drains when the retrieving operation is complete and the door is closed.

Stepping inside Panam , a bright and airy interior is a cheery contrast to the imposing exterior lines and dark exterior paint. The cosy main salon, adorned in neutral-coloured soft furnishings, is well-lit, thanks to full-height windows and glass sliding doors. Close contact with the sea is maintained thanks to transparent bulwarks on the main deck, allowing unfettered views out of the large windows in the main salon and dining room.

Besides the views outside, what immediately grabs your eye is a living vertical garden, with fern-like plants covering a bulkhead that separates the salon and dining area forward. The installation visually divides the space, but it’s placed centrally so it doesn’t cut off the flow of movement on the main deck. “Architectural solutions that divide the spaces without really separating them allow us to create different locations while avoiding narrow spaces,” Paszkowski says. “On board Panam ,  this functional and aesthetic element might be a marble or a wooden wall – or a vertical garden.” Forward of the dining room is a large pantry area and galley.

The interior was created by Paszkowski’s team in collaboration with Margherita Casprini. They met the owner’s brief for a welcoming and elegantly contemporary interior with the use of woods, polished lacquered panels, grey and neutral tones, and onyx and marble embellishments, all of them chosen by the owner, who was very hands-on in the build of his first custom yacht.

Teak on the exterior decks meets sand oak for the interior floor and striped sand oak on the walls.  A processing technique created a special wave effect in the oak used for the wall of the main deck lobby, which has a varnished metal sheet on the ceiling amplifying a 3D effect, and the owner’s stateroom.

The interior is further detailed in leather, glass and white backlit onyx, used to great effect on the main salon walls on either side of the living-garden wall. The wide selection of marbles includes glossy Persian Gray marble for the shower of the owner’s stateroom and Calacatta for the flooring, while Marfil Cream marble, Eramosa and Coffee Brown marble decorate the lower-deck guest cabins, VIP bathrooms and the dayhead.

The interior living areas take full advantage of the yacht’s nearly 28ft beam, meeting the owner’s request for spacious living in a high-performance yacht. It’s especially noticeable in the forward owner’s stateroom and bath, both stretching across the full beam. A dog-leg wall separates the owner’s office from the suite, ensuring privacy. Another nice feature here is that you can open the windows to allow the fresh sea air to flow through.

In all, following the owner’s wish to stay connected to his environment, the design enhances contact with the sea with open-air areas that include an expansive flybridge, a beach club and the aft section of the main deck. The latter features a custom-made table, planters for live plants and an aft-facing sunpad that might typically be seen on a smaller go-fast boat, evoking Panam ’s speedy nature. Top-of-the-line speakers are hidden in the outdoor spaces, even inside the flagpole.

The flybridge, around 861 square feet in area, is a party deck with multiple lounge areas, a custom-made counter-current pool holding seven tons of water, with a television screen built into its back wall. It has a bar,  a custom marble structure with a sliding countertop, designed as a flexible, space-saving solution. Paszkowski explains this clever feature: “By sliding, the top provides a shelf for people sitting on the stools and reveals the working area for the waiter on the opposite side.  The top also hides a console for the DJ on one side.”

The bridge itself is situated at the mezzanine level,  just a few steps down, and assisting the captain in docking maneuvers are two wing stations.

Much like with the main deck bulwarks, transparent protection rims the outer perimeter of the flybridge and the pool to connect the space with the water beyond. Other open-air areas of note include a lofty bow lounge – which Paszkowski says is his “favourite place among the al fresco spaces we designed” – and the beach club, which opens on three sides with two side-folding balconies in carbon fibre. “It is an excellent solution to provide another huge social area close to the water and to enhance the contact to the sea according to the owner’s wish of enjoying the surrounding environment while living on board,” the designer says. When the stern platform and side balconies are open, the total beach club area is 459 square feet.

This layout demanded innovative thinking and engineering. The central engine room was moved forward to make room for the large beach club and the semi-floodable garage. Although a triple-waterjet propulsion system made it easier to control noise and vibrations, Panam ’s layout necessitated shaft lines that are 27.7 metre long from the transom to the gearbox flange.

“Building Panam has been a very challenging project for Baglietto, in both the design and technical aspects, but the final result has made everybody at the shipyard very proud,” Toracca says. “The owner was very happy and excited as well. Being a full-custom project, Panam is the realisation of his yachting dreams.”

On Board 40m M/Y Panam with Capt. Dean Rubesa

Dean Rubesa, the captain of the new 40-meter Baglietto motor yacht Panam , recalls his earliest memory of boating as a child as “feeling the freedom of sailing on the sea.” Growing up in Opatija, Croatia, his family lived close to the sea and owned a small boat that they used for leisure and fishing. As he got older, Capt. Rubesa chased the alluring sense of freedom he felt when he was on the water by racing in sailing regattas. Eventually, he set his sights on bigger boats as well. “I always wanted to try to work in the yachting industry,” he says.

Capt. Rubesa has held posts on various motor yachts over the course of his career, and in recent years, he began working on the builds of yachts as well, including the 50-meter Rossinavi M/Y Lel and his latest vessel, Panam , which is a fully custom project by Baglietto. Becoming a build captain was another feather in his hat, and a role he has enjoyed.

Panam represents the first custom project for a yacht owner who wanted to combine high-performance, comfortable accommodations, and a close connection to the sea. The yacht is designed by long-time Baglietto collaborator Francesco Paszkowski. The yard and designer are no strangers to designing high-performance planing hull yachts, and Panam certainly fits the bill. “The yacht has stunning performance with three water jet MTU engines with top speed of 30-plus knots,” says Capt. Rubesa. Panam is powered by 3 x MTU 16V2000 M96 L main engines, twin lateral waterjets steering, and one central waterjet booster.

But the brief for Panam presented a challenge for Baglietto. In addition to being fast, Panam ’s owner also stipulated that his new yacht should be as comfortable and livable as a displacement vessel. Luckily, the yacht has a roomy 8.4-meter beam, which the design team have maximized to make the most of the available space. Design choices also create an open and airy feel, such as floor-to-ceiling windows in the main salon and dining room, and glass bulwarks that extend the views of the sea from inside.

Baglietto came up with custom solutions to meet the owner’s multi-layered brief, including creating a semi-floodable tender garage that doesn’t require a davit to launch and retrieve the tender, thereby resulting in less weight on board and increased performance of the yacht. Unusual for a yacht of her size, the floodable tender garage is set aft of the engine room. The garage can accommodate a 5.5-meter tender. “It is partially floodable as the lower edge of the garage’s side shell door lies below the waterline,” says Carlo Toracca of Baglietto, who served as Panam ’s project manager. “This allows launching and retrieving the tender in a very simple, safe, and fast way since the tender itself enters the garage when still floating and is towed inside by a winch and a balancing cradle.” Baglietto designed the garage so that it can fill with seawater before opening the shell door, and it can be immediately drained when the retrieving operation is completed and the door is closed.

Panam ’s engine room was moved forward to accommodate the garage and a large beach club aft. “For this reason, the shaft lines had to be longer than normal ones. This required a special study to avoid noise and vibrations, which is certainly a challenge when it comes to high-performing vessels,” says Toracca. While a triple-waterjet propulsion system made it easier to control noise and vibrations, Panam ’s specific layout necessitated the use of long shaft lines (8.5 meters from the transom to the gearbox flange). This required a painstaking design study on the flexural and torsional stability and engine room bulkhead penetration in order to limit the noise and vibration transmission and to comply with the firebreak needs.

Capt. Rubesa might’ve traded his sailing days for a go-fast motor yacht, but he wouldn’t have it any other way. He seems to love his life as a superyacht captain. “Besides the amazing places you get to go, my favorite thing is that we are all here in this hospitality industry to make our guests and owners happy, giving a good service, and getting good feedback is the best thing.”

PANAM boasts elegant yet aggressive exterior features, created to provide impressive performance. Constructed with aluminium alloy hull, she is fitted with three V16 2000 MTU engines and three KaMeWa water-jet engines, reaching a top speed of 31 knots and a cruising speed of 25 knots.

Some of the main design features include the straight bow and large irregularly shaped windows, creating light and airy interiors.

The main saloon offers plenty of seating, while the dining area is separated from this area by a designer ‘green wall’. A full-beam master suite with a walk-in wardrobe and a bathroom with hammam is also situated on this deck. The master suite has two fold-out balconies for additional indoor-outdoor flow and for guests pure enjoyment.

Guest accommodation is located on the lower bridge, together with a professional galley. The captain’s cabin can also be found here with additional two double cabins, the laundry and the crew mess.

Aft, behind the engine room, is the semi-float-in garage, storing a 17’ tender with a spacious beach area further aft.

The vast 65ft flybridge has been fitted with a large custom-made pool with counter-current swimming system as well as a nice sunbathing area to the bow.

Motor Yacht

M/Y PANAM is the fifth Fuoriserie motor yacht by CCN following 50 m MY Elsea, 40 m MY Kanga, 27 m MY Freedom, and 31 m MY Vanadis, and marks a new prestigious collaboration between CCN and leading international designers. Indeed, this yacht has been penciled by Francesco Paszkowski Design, who took care of both exteriors and interiors, the latter in cooperation with Margherita Casprini.

  Sleek and aggressive, this vessel stands out for her impressive performances, ensured by the aluminum alloy hull and three V16 2000 MTU engines and three KaMeWa water-jet engines, which push her up to a maximum speed of 31 knots and a pleasant cruising speed of 25. All technical components, the mast and the roll bar are in carbon fiber, so as to reduce overall weight. The straight bow endows this yacht with a a modern, dynamic and powerful look, further enhanced by the large irregular-shape windows that let plenty of natural light into the interior saloon. The layout features a large salon on the main deck, separate from the dining area thanks to a “green” wall. Forward, the full-beam master suite is fitted with a walk-in wardrobe and a bathroom with hammam. Two folding balconies open up on the sides. Four guest cabins are located on the lower bridge, which also hosts the professional galley. On this same deck, forward, are the captain’s cabin, 2 double cabins, the laundry and the crew mess. Behind the engine room is the semi-float-in garage storing a 17’ tender, while a pleasant beach area can be enjoyed aft, open on three sides and fitted with a beach platform transformer granting very easy access to the sea. The 65 sq m fly bridge features a large aft custom-made pool with counter current swimming system, while a sunbathing area can be found at the bow.

CCN’s 40m Fuoriserie Superyacht Panam has Found its new Owner

CCN’s stunning Panam superyacht has been ordered by a European client a few months ago. Construction of the hull was already finished in July and the yacht is “well on schedule” for its slated delivery next year. The fifth yacht in the Fuoriseries, Panam is a sporty 40-metre full aluminum vessel, powered by three V16 engines of the 2000 series and KaMeWa jet propulsion.

It has a strong focus on performance, with an impressive top speed of 31 knots and a cruising speed of 25 knots, but CCN’s newest yacht is also very stylish, with an exterior and interior design imagined by Francesco Paskowski, who also collaborated with Margherita Casprini on the interiors.

Key features include a large main deck saloon, divided from the dining area by a lovely green wall, a custom infinity pool, and a beach club. Panam will be able to accommodate up to 10 guests, with the lucky owner of this vessel enjoying a full beam master suite on the main deck, equipped with folding balconies, a walk-in wardrobe and a luxurious bathroom with a Hammam.

The remaining guest cabins and the crew quarters are located on the lower deck, alongside the galley. There are four guest cabins, double or twins, with two more double cabins for the crew, a separate captain’s cabin and the laundry there.

Other features of the CCN Panam include a large beach club that opens with three hull doors and features an automatic ladder system. There’s also a semi float-in garage at the stern that’s able to house a 17-feet tender, and the spacious flybridge boasts a custom-made infinity pool that comes with a lap counter.

Launched this summer, out of the eminent Italian shipyard CCN, this custom-designed yacht from Baglietto's successful Fuoriserie collection offers unbridled elegance, whilst showcasing a sleek and powerful exterior with striking angular features.

Penned by the illustrious Francesco Paszkowksi in collaboration with interior designer and architect Margeritha Casprini, MY Panam is elegance personified, with a twist. This Italian jewel offers incredible high-powered performance alongside pure style. Powered by 16V 2000hp MTU engines combined with KaMeWA water jet propulsion, MY Panam has an impressive top speed of 31 knots and a cruising speed of 25 knots. Furthermore, the majority of the technical components onboard have been constructed in carbon fibre, including the stern hull doors, thus reducing overall weight and boosting performance.

Cruising predominantly around the Spanish waters of the Mediterrannean , MY Panam boasts several standout features, such as a 65 sq m panoramic stateroom located on the flybridge. This full beam cabin includes a walk-in wardrobe, private hammam spa and two folding electric balconies on either side. Four additional guest cabins on the lower deck make up the total guest accomodation for up to 12 guests. 

This boat also features a four hull door; one opening to a semi-float-in garage housing a 17' Castoldi tender and numerous water toys. The other three doors open out onto a private beach club platform with automated ladder, allowing guests ease of access into an inviting sea.

The elegant interior is a fusion of warm woods and light shades, embellished with onyx and marble to create the effect of pure extravagance and luxury. Large asymmetrical windows allow plenty of natural light to bathe the sweeping saloon and dining area, which are divided by a "green wall" lush with plants.

A custom-made infinity pool with lap counter and sunbathing area on the bow tops off this yacht's lavish facilities.

This Italian jewel offers incredible high-powered performance alongside pure style.

From its base port of Barcelona, MY Panam is avaialble for chartering along the stunning Costa del Sol and the idyllic archipelagos of the Balearics - Palma - Ibiza - Menorca.

Environmental pollution is the unwarranted discharge of mass or energy into the planet’s natural resource pools, such as land, air, or water, which detriments the environment’s ecological stability and the health of the living things that inhabit it. There is an intensified health risk and pollution in middle and low-income countries due to the increased use of pesticides, industrialization, the introduction of nitrogen-based fertilizers, forest fires, urbanization, and inadequate waste management (Appannagari, 2017). Air pollution, lead and chemicals exposure, hazardous waste exposure, and inappropriate e-waste disposal all result in unfavorable living conditions, fatal illnesses, and ecosystem destruction. The essay will provide an overview of pollution and proffer solutions to combating pollution for a sustainable environment and health.

In addition to hindering economic development and considerably accelerating climate change, pollution exacerbates poverty and inequality in urban and rural areas. The most pain is always experienced by the poor, who cannot afford to protect themselves against pollution’s harmful effects. The main environmental factor contributing to sickness and early mortality is pollution due to premature deaths resulting from pollution (Appannagari, 2017). Due to the unacceptably high cost to human capital and health, as well as the resulting GDP losses, pollution must be addressed. Through initiatives like reducing black carbon and methane emissions, which are responsible for air pollution and climate change, pollution management can also significantly contribute to climate change mitigation (Appannagari, 2017). Additionally, pollution control can promote competitiveness through, for instance, job growth, increased energy efficiency, better transportation, and sustainable urban and rural development. Below are the various approaches for solutions to health and pollution problems.

First, governments should evaluate pollution as a national and international priority and integrate it into the city and country planning process. Pollution affects the health and well-being of societies and, as such, cannot be solely viewed as an environmental issue (The Lancet Commission on Pollution and Health, 2017). All levels of government should give pollution prevention a high priority, incorporate it into development planning, and tie it to commitments regarding climate change, SDGs, and the prevention of non-communicable diseases. Some options are both affordable and offer good returns on investment.

Secondly, governments should increase funding for pollution control and prioritize it by health impacts. There should be a significant increase in the financing for pollution management in low- and middle-income nations, both from national budgets and international development organizations (The Lancet Commission on Pollution and Health, 2017). The most effective international support for pollution reduction is when it mobilizes additional actions and funding from others. Examples include helping towns and nations that are quickly industrializing concerning technical capacity building, regulatory and enforcement support, and support for direct actions to save lives. Monitoring financing initiatives are necessary to determine their cost-effectiveness and to raise accountability.

Thirdly, organizations should work to build multicultural partnerships for pollution control. Public-private partnerships and interagency cooperation can be powerful tools in creating clean technology and energy sources that will ultimately prevent pollution at its source (The Lancet Commission on Pollution and Health, 2017). Collaborations between ministries that include the ministries of finance, energy, development, agriculture, and transport, as well as the ministries of health and the environment, are crucial in pollution control. Governments should promote monitoring systems that could identify and apportion pollution sources, measure pollution levels, guide enforcement, and assess progress toward goals. The use of new technology in pollution monitoring, such as data mining and satellite images, can boost effectiveness, broaden the monitoring area, and cut costs.

One of the main issues facing the world in the current period is pollution. Natural resources are depleting daily due to car emissions, new technologies, factories, and chemicals added to food. All of these factors seriously harm the world. However, the problems caused by pollution can be prevented by building multicultural partnerships, increasing funding for pollution control, integrating it into the country’s planning process, and adopting new technology for monitoring pollution. Preventing pollution lowers the cost to the environment and the economy.

At a personal level, we can minimise environmental pollution by taking public transport or carpools to reduce vehicular smoke, avoiding firecrackers at festivals and celebrations can also cut down on air and noise pollution, and not using fertilisers and pesticides which can cause both water and soil pollution, and switching over to organic farming. The government can also bring strict rules and regulations to lessen industrial pollution.  

To sum up, any type of pollution is harmful to the environment with serious consequences like global warming, uneven climatic changes, etc. Due to our greediness and illegal human activities, the innocent lives of animals are lost. The time has come to join hands and work towards preserving and protecting the environment for the present as well as future generations.

Causes and Effects of Pollution

The environment people live in is affecting them, including health and lifestyle, and the nature around them, like plants, animals, water bodies, and the atmosphere. Environmental issues caused by humans using natural resources and treating nature with no respect have resulted in some negative changes. One of the most significant problems people are facing nowadays is pollution. It affects all the crucial elements for sustaining human life: water, air, and soil. The causes and effects of pollution are multiple and varied, and they should be examined closely to better understand this phenomenon.

General reasons for pollution include major emissions of carbon dioxide, as well as the chemicals produced as the result of the burning of fossil fuels. This happens because of different factories’ activity and their waste, which is being discharged into water, soil, and the atmosphere. Other than big manufacturing elements, pollution is caused by people individually. This involves emissions caused by cars, using much energy for different activities, and producing enormous amounts of waste, especially the types that are not decomposable or take hundreds of years to do so.

The first side of the environment impacted by pollution is the atmosphere. Air pollution can be defined as a combination of harmful gases or particles that accumulate in the air in unsafe quantities. The worsening air quality can result in multiple health issues, including “heart disease, lung cancer, and both chronic and acute respiratory diseases” (“Ambient (outdoor) air pollution,” 2018, para. 1). As air quality is measured around the world, many deficiencies are detected, which directly influence human life.

According to the World Health Organization data, in 2016, about 91 percent of the population inhabited places with unsatisfactory air quality (as cited in “Ambient (outdoor) air pollution,” 2018). Therefore, air pollution is affecting not only those living in big urban areas but is also spreading around the whole planet.

Water covers the majority of the planet, so water pollution is also a crucial problem. Wastewater and emission of fertilizers into water bodies cause water pollution, which can make water harmful to human consumption. Other than becoming undrinkable, contaminated water will affect or even kill aquatic creatures and plants, as well as transfer to crops, making them just as dangerous. The United Nations World Water Development Report stated that over 80 percent of wastewater is discharged back into the environment, not being appropriately treated (2017). Thus, not only do the major water bodies become largely polluted but the effect is also transferred to soil.

As a significant part of the food for humans and domestic animals is grown, polluted soil can also cause complications. Soil pollution occurs when certain toxic chemicals are gathered in large amounts. Soil can be affected by harmful substances as a result of industrial waste emission into the ground, contaminated water interacting with it, or excessive amounts of pesticides or fertilizers being used. As a result, plants and crops become dangerous for human consumption and can cause multiple health problems.

Pollution is a global phenomenon, causing much damage to the planet and harming people and other living creatures. It can manifest in different forms, but its impact is hugely detrimental. Seeking solutions for this problem is now one of the main agendas for the whole of humankind, which can only be done with combined efforts of government structures and community and individual actions. Only by being aware of this situation and taking measures for improvement will people be able to protect their health and create better conditions for future generations.

Water pollution is the release of substances into bodies of water that makes water unsafe for human use and disrupts aquatic ecosystems. Water pollution can be caused by a plethora of different contaminants, including toxic waste , petroleum , and disease-causing microorganisms .

What human activities cause water pollution?

Human activities that generate domestic sewage and toxic waste cause water pollution by contaminating water with disease-causing microorganisms and poisonous substances. Oil spills are another source of water pollution that have devastating impacts on surrounding ecosystems.

Sewage can promote algae growth, which can eventually result in eutrophic “dead zones” where aquatic life cannot survive because of a lack of oxygen. Microplastics are often found in marine wildlife and can become concentrated in humans who consume seafood because of biomagnification . Oil spills, such as the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010, strand and kill many different marine species.

While some studies point to human activity as a catalyst for red tide, scientists are unsure about its cause. Red tide is a common term for harmful algal blooms that often poison or kill wildlife and humans who consume contaminated seafood. Red tides can severely impact ecosystems and local economies.

Types and sources of water pollutants

Water bodies can be polluted by a wide variety of substances, including pathogenic microorganisms, putrescible organic waste, fertilizers and plant nutrients , toxic chemicals, sediments, heat , petroleum (oil), and radioactive substances . Several types of water pollutants are considered below. (For a discussion of the handling of sewage and other forms of waste produced by human activities, see waste disposal and solid-waste management .)

Water pollutants come from either point sources or dispersed sources. A point source is a pipe or channel, such as those used for discharge from an industrial facility or a city sewerage system . A dispersed (or nonpoint) source is a very broad unconfined area from which a variety of pollutants enter the water body, such as the runoff from an agricultural area. Point sources of water pollution are easier to control than dispersed sources, because the contaminated water has been collected and conveyed to one single point where it can be treated. Pollution from dispersed sources is difficult to control, and, despite much progress in the building of modern sewage-treatment plants, dispersed sources continue to cause a large fraction of water pollution problems.

Domestic sewage is the primary source of pathogens ( disease -causing microorganisms) and putrescible organic substances. Because pathogens are excreted in feces , all sewage from cities and towns is likely to contain pathogens of some type, potentially presenting a direct threat to public health . Putrescible organic matter presents a different sort of threat to water quality. As organics are decomposed naturally in the sewage by bacteria and other microorganisms, the dissolved oxygen content of the water is depleted. This endangers the quality of lakes and streams, where high levels of oxygen are required for fish and other aquatic organisms to survive. In addition, domestic sewage commonly contains active pharmaceutical ingredients, which can harm aquatic organisms and may facilitate antibiotic resistance . Sewage-treatment processes reduce the levels of pathogens and organics in wastewater, but they do not eliminate them completely ( see also wastewater treatment ).

Domestic sewage is also a major source of plant nutrients , mainly nitrates and phosphates . Excess nitrates and phosphates in water promote the growth of algae , sometimes causing unusually dense and rapid growths known as algal blooms . When the algae die, oxygen dissolved in the water declines because microorganisms use oxygen to digest algae during the process of decomposition ( see also biochemical oxygen demand ). Anaerobic organisms (organisms that do not require oxygen to live) then metabolize the organic wastes, releasing gases such as methane and hydrogen sulfide , which are harmful to the aerobic (oxygen-requiring) forms of life. The process by which a lake changes from a clean, clear condition—with a relatively low concentration of dissolved nutrients and a balanced aquatic community —to a nutrient-rich, algae-filled state and thence to an oxygen-deficient, waste-filled condition is called eutrophication . Eutrophication is a naturally occurring, slow, and inevitable process. However, when it is accelerated by human activity and water pollution (a phenomenon called cultural eutrophication ), it can lead to the premature aging and death of a body of water.

The improper disposal of solid waste is a major source of water pollution. Solid waste includes garbage, rubbish, electronic waste , trash, and construction and demolition waste, all of which are generated by individual, residential, commercial, institutional, and industrial activities. The problem is especially acute in developing countries that may lack infrastructure to properly dispose of solid waste or that may have inadequate resources or regulation to limit improper disposal. In some places solid waste is intentionally dumped into bodies of water. Land pollution can also become water pollution if the trash or other debris is carried by animals, wind, or rainfall to bodies of water. Significant amounts of solid waste pollution in inland bodies of water can also eventually make their way to the ocean. Solid waste pollution is unsightly and damaging to the health of aquatic ecosystems and can harm wildlife directly. Many solid wastes, such as plastics and electronic waste, break down and leach harmful chemicals into the water, making them a source of toxic or hazardous waste.

Of growing concern for aquatic environments is plastic pollution . Since the ocean is downstream from nearly every terrestrial location, it is the receiving body for much of the plastic waste generated on land. Several million tons of debris end up in the world’s oceans every year, and much of it is improperly discarded plastic litter. Plastic pollution can be broken down by waves and ultraviolet radiation into smaller pieces known as microplastics , which are less than 5 mm (0.2 inch) in length and are not biodegradable. Primary microplastics, such as microbeads in personal care products and plastic fibers in synthetic textiles (e.g., nylon ), also enter the environment directly, through any of various channels—for example, from wastewater treatment systems , from household laundry, or from unintentional spills during manufacturing or transport. Alarmingly, a number of studies of both freshwater and marine locations have found microplastics in every aquatic organism tested. These tiny plastics are suspected of working their way up the marine food chains , from zooplankton and small fish to large marine predators, and have been found in seafood. Microplastics have also been detected in drinking water. Their health effects are unknown.

Waste is considered toxic if it is poisonous , radioactive , explosive , carcinogenic (causing cancer ), mutagenic (causing damage to chromosomes ), teratogenic (causing birth defects), or bioaccumulative (that is, increasing in concentration at the higher ends of food chains). Sources of toxic chemicals include improperly disposed wastewater from industrial plants and chemical process facilities ( lead , mercury , chromium ) as well as surface runoff containing pesticides used on agricultural areas and suburban lawns ( chlordane , dieldrin , heptachlor). Sediment (e.g., silt ) resulting from soil erosion or construction activity can be carried into water bodies by surface runoff . Suspended sediment interferes with the penetration of sunlight and upsets the ecological balance of a body of water. Also, it can disrupt the reproductive cycles of fish and other forms of life , and when it settles out of suspension it can smother bottom-dwelling organisms.

Heat is considered to be a water pollutant because it decreases the capacity of water to hold dissolved oxygen in solution, and it increases the rate of metabolism of fish. Valuable species of game fish (e.g., trout ) cannot survive in water with very low levels of dissolved oxygen . A major source of heat is the practice of discharging cooling water from power plants into rivers; the discharged water may be as much as 15 °C (27 °F) warmer than the naturally occurring water. The rise in water temperatures because of global warming can also be considered a form of thermal pollution.

Petroleum ( oil ) pollution occurs when oil from roads and parking lots is carried in surface runoff into water bodies. Accidental oil spills are also a source of oil pollution—as in the devastating spills from the tanker Exxon Valdez (which released more than 260,000 barrels in Alaska’s Prince William Sound in 1989) and from the Deepwater Horizon oil rig (which released more than 4 million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico in 2010). Oil slicks eventually move toward shore, harming aquatic life and damaging recreation areas.

Groundwater —water contained in underground geologic formations called aquifers —is a source of drinking water for many people. For example, about half the people in the United States depend on groundwater for their domestic water supply . Although groundwater may appear crystal clear (due to the natural filtration that occurs as it flows slowly through layers of soil ), it may still be polluted by dissolved chemicals and by bacteria and viruses . Sources of chemical contaminants include poorly designed or poorly maintained subsurface sewage-disposal systems (e.g., septic tanks ), industrial wastes disposed of in improperly lined or unlined landfills or lagoons , leachates from unlined municipal refuse landfills, mining and petroleum production, and leaking underground storage tanks below gasoline service stations. In coastal areas, increasing withdrawal of groundwater (due to urbanization and industrialization) can cause saltwater intrusion: as the water table drops, seawater is drawn into wells.

Although estuaries and oceans contain vast volumes of water, their natural capacity to absorb pollutants is limited. Contamination from sewage outfall pipes, from dumping of sludge or other wastes, and from oil spills can harm marine life, especially microscopic phytoplankton that serve as food for larger aquatic organisms. Sometimes, unsightly and dangerous waste materials can be washed back to shore, littering beaches with hazardous debris. In oceans alone, annual pollution from all types of plastics was estimated to be between 4.8 million and 12.7 million tonnes (between 5.3 million and 14 million tons) in the early 21st century, and floating plastic waste had accumulated in Earth’s five subtropical gyres, which cover 40 percent of the world’s oceans.

Another ocean pollution problem is the seasonal formation of “ dead zones” (i.e., hypoxic areas, where dissolved oxygen levels drop so low that most higher forms of aquatic life vanish) in certain coastal areas. The cause is nutrient enrichment from dispersed agricultural runoff and concomitant algal blooms. Dead zones occur worldwide; one of the largest of these (sometimes as large as 22,730 square km [8,776 square miles]) forms annually in the Gulf of Mexico , beginning at the Mississippi River delta.

Although pure water is rarely found in nature (because of the strong tendency of water to dissolve other substances), the characterization of water quality (i.e., clean or polluted) is a function of the intended use of the water. For example, water that is clean enough for swimming and fishing may not be clean enough for drinking and cooking. Water quality standards (limits on the amount of impurities allowed in water intended for a particular use) provide a legal framework for the prevention of water pollution of all types.

There are several types of water quality standards. Stream standards are those that classify streams, rivers , and lakes on the basis of their maximum beneficial use; they set allowable levels of specific substances or qualities (e.g., dissolved oxygen , turbidity, pH) allowed in those bodies of water, based on their given classification. Effluent (water outflow) standards set specific limits on the levels of contaminants (e.g., biochemical oxygen demand , suspended solids, nitrogen ) allowed in the final discharges from wastewater-treatment plants. Drinking-water standards include limits on the levels of specific contaminants allowed in potable water delivered to homes for domestic use. In the United States , the Clean Water Act and its amendments regulate water quality and set minimum standards for waste discharges for each industry as well as regulations for specific problems such as toxic chemicals and oil spills . What are the Best Ways to Reduce Pollution?

It is important to take action as soon as possible to prevent or reduce pollution after learning of the harmful effects of pollution. Taking public transportation or carpooling reduces vehicle emissions, hence reducing air pollution. Aside from reducing air and noise pollution, avoiding firecrackers at festivals and celebrations may also reduce air pollution. Recycling is essential to reducing air pollution in general. It pollutes the oceans and land when used plastic ends up in them.

After using these utensils, be sure to reuse them as long as you can, rather than throw them away after using them. As well as encouraging everyone to plant more trees, which absorb harmful gases and clean the air, we need to encourage everyone to plant more trees. At a national level, the government should limit fertilizer use to ensure the nutrient content of the soil. Further, pollution of oceans and rivers must be dealt with by preventing industries from dumping their waste into them.

Pollution is a global problem. Although urban areas are usually more polluted than the countryside, pollution can spread to remote places where no people live. For example, pesticides and other chemicals have been found in the Antarctic ice sheet . In the middle of the northern Pacific Ocean, a huge collection of microscopic plastic particles forms what is known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch . Air and water currents carry pollution. Ocean currents and migrating fish carry marine pollutants far and wide. Winds can pick up radioactive material accidentally released from a nuclear reactor and scatter it around the world. Smoke from a factory in one country drifts into another country. In the past, visitors to Big Bend National Park in the U.S. state of Texas could see 290 kilometers (180 miles) across the vast landscape . Now, coal-burning power plants in Texas and the neighboring state of Chihuahua, Mexico have spewed so much pollution into the air that visitors to Big Bend can sometimes see only 50 kilometers (30 miles). Volcanic gases , such as sulfur dioxide , can kill nearby residents and make the soil infertile for years. Mount Vesuvius, a volcano in Italy, famously erupted in 79, killing hundreds of residents of the nearby towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Most victims of Vesuvius were not killed by lava or landslides caused by the eruption. They were choked, or asphyxiated , by deadly volcanic gases. In 1986, a toxic cloud developed over Lake Nyos, Cameroon. Lake Nyos sits in the crater of a volcano. Though the volcano did not erupt, it did eject volcanic gases into the lake. The heated gases passed through the water of the lake and collected as a cloud that descended the slopes of the volcano and into nearby valleys . As the toxic cloud moved across the landscape, it killed birds and other organisms in their natural habitat . This air pollution also killed thousands of cattle and as many as 1,700 people. Most air pollution is not natural, however. It comes from burning fossil fuels —coal, oil , and natural gas . When gasoline is burned to power cars and trucks, it produces carbon monoxide , a colorless, odorless gas. The gas is harmful in high concentrations , or amounts. Greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane occur naturally in the atmosphere. In fact, they are necessary for life on Earth. They absorb sunlight reflected from Earth, preventing it from escaping into space. By trapping heat in the atmosphere, they keep Earth warm enough for people to live. This is called the greenhouse effect . But human activities such as burning fossil fuels and destroying forests have increased the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. This has increased the greenhouse effect, and average temperatures across the globe are rising. The decade that began in the year 2000 was the warmest on record. This increase in worldwide average temperatures, caused in part by human activity, is called global warming . Global warming is causing ice sheets and glaciers to melt. The melting ice is causing sea levels to rise at a rate of two millimeters (0.09 inches) per year. The rising seas will eventually flood low-lying coastal regions . Entire nations, such as the islands of Maldives, are threatened by this climate change . Global warming also contributes to the phenomenon of ocean acidification . Ocean acidification is the process of ocean waters absorbing more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Fewer organisms can survive in warmer, less salty waters. Chemicals called chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are a dangerous form of air pollution that governments worked to reduce in the 1980s and 1990s. CFCs are found in gases that cool refrigerators, in foam products, and in aerosol cans . CFCs damage the ozone layer , a region in Earth’s upper atmosphere. The ozone layer protects Earth by absorbing much of the sun’s harmful ultraviolet radiation . Many countries, including the United States, now severely limit the production of CFCs. Water Pollution Some polluted water looks muddy, smells bad, and has garbage floating in it. Some polluted water looks clean, but is filled with harmful chemicals you can’t see or smell. Polluted water is unsafe for drinking and swimming. Some people who drink polluted water are exposed to hazardous chemicals that may make them sick years later. Others consume bacteria and other tiny aquatic organisms that cause disease. The United Nations estimates that 4,000 children die every day from drinking dirty water. Sometimes, polluted water harms people indirectly. They get sick because the fish that live in polluted water are unsafe to eat. They have too many pollutants in their flesh. There are some natural sources of water pollution. Oil and natural gas, for example, can leak into oceans and lakes from natural underground sources. These sites are called petroleum seeps . The smoke from coal-burning power plants can be filtered. People and businesses that illegally dump pollutants into the land, water, and air can be fined for millions of dollars. Some government programs, such as the Superfund program in the United States, can force polluters to clean up the sites they polluted. International agreements can also reduce pollution. The Kyoto Protocol , a United Nations agreement to limit the emission of greenhouse gases, has been signed by 191 countries. The United States, the world’s second-largest producer of greenhouse gases, did not sign the agreement. Other countries, such as China, the world’s largest producer of greenhouse gases, have not met their goals. Still, many gains have been made. In 1969, the Cuyahoga River, in the U.S. state of Ohio, was so clogged with oil and trash that it caught on fire. The fire helped spur the Clean Water Act of 1972. This law limited what pollutants could be released into water and set standards for how clean water should be. Today, the Cuyahoga River is much cleaner. Fish have returned to regions of the river where they once could not survive. But even as some rivers are becoming cleaner, others are becoming more polluted. As countries around the world become wealthier, some forms of pollution increase. Countries with growing economies usually need more power plants, which produce more pollutants. Reducing pollution requires environmental, political, and economic leadership. Developed nations must work to reduce and recycle their materials, while developing nations must work to strengthen their economies without destroying the environment. Developed and developing countries must work together toward the common goal of protecting the environment for future use.

Some songbirds, such as robins, are unable to communicate or find food in the presence of heavy noise pollution. The sound waves produced by some noise pollutants can disrupt the sonar used by marine animals to communicate or locate food.

Environment Pollution is one of the greatest problems today which is increasing with every passing year and causing crucial and severe damage to the earth. It has become a real problem since the beginning of the industrial revolution. It is the contamination of physical and biological components of the Earth / atmosphere system to such an extent that normal environmental processes are harmed. Pollution of the environment consists of five main types of pollution, namely air, water, soil, noise and light. Development activities such as construction, transport and manufacturing not only deplete natural resources, but also produce large quantities of waste which leads to air pollution, water, soil and the oceans; global warming and acid rain. This paper provides the insight view about the affects of environment pollution in the perspective of air pollution, water and land/ soil waste pollution on human and also provide the ways to save the environment with all these pollution.

Earth is the only known planet which supports life. The environment of earth has made the existence, growth and development of all living beings possible. The word "environment" means surroundings. The environment is polluted in various ways. The dictionary explains pollutions as "The presence dictionary explains pollutions as "The presence in or introduction into the environment of substance which has harmful or poisonous effect." Pollution is the effect of undesirable changes in our surroundings that have harmful effects on plants, animals and human beings. This occurs when only short-term economic gains are made at the cost of the long-term ecological benefits for humanity. No natural phenomenon has led to greater ecological changes than have been made by mankind. During the last few decades we have contaminated our air, water and land on which life itself depends with a variety of waste products. Pollutants: include solid, liquid or gaseous substances present in greater than natural abundance produced due to human activity, which have a detrimental effect on our environment. The nature and concentration of a pollutant determines the severity of detrimental effects on human health. An average human requires about 12 kg of air each day, which is nearly 12 to15 times greater than the amount of food we eat. Thus even a small concentration of pollutants in the air becomes more significant in comparison to the similar levels present in food. Pollutants that enter water have the ability to spread to distant places especially in the marine ecosystem.

The environment is everything that surrounds us. The environment is subject to constant changes that can be caused by natural factors such as soil erosion, earthquakes, floods, fires, and anthropogenic factors such as urbanization, industry, traffic, population growth, the accumulation of waste, and others. Due to the ubiquitous interaction of man in the environment, most often without respecting the natural rhythm in nature, man changes the environment with a harmful effect on biological and landscape diversity and often with negative consequences for human health and quality of life. By neglecting the environment in favor of economic growth and development, man has changed the environment more than any other biological species in a relatively short time with such irresponsible behavior. The consequences of such actions are unsustainable and call into question the future of that same environment. Therefore, protecting and preserving the environment in all spheres of life and work on the basis of sustainability becomes the biggest challenge for modern man and society as a whole.

Developmental activities such as construction, transportation and manufacturing not only deplete the natural resources but also produce large amount of wastes that leads to pollution of air, water, soil, and oceans, global warming and acid rains. Untreated or improperly treated waste is a major cause of pollution of rivers and environmental degradation causing ill health and loss of crop productivity. In this research paper a study is undertaken about the major causes of pollution, their effects on our environment and the various measures that can be taken to control such pollutions

The word environmental pollution basically describes pollution related to air, water and soil ecosystem, that is directly and indirectly affect lives on earth. Climate change is a serious subject to talk regards damaging species in ocean that took a part of environmental disturbance. The main reasons behind disturbing ecosystem and harming natural beauty of environment are anthropogenic activities. To fulfil own desires, human beings are exploiting natural resources unexpectedly and ultimately damaging ecosystem via polluting air, water and soil systems. Present article’s main focus is on the different environmental pollution and its impact on lives of plant.
