History of taganrog.

In the 7th-6th centuries B.C., according to archaeological research, there was a Greek settlement on the territory of present Taganrog. Today, there are no remains of this settlement. It was founded in the second half of the 7th century B.C. and destroyed in the second half of the 6th century B.C., probably by nomadic Scythians.

Taganrog was first mentioned in written sources in 1698. It was founded after the capture of Azov by Peter’s I order as a fortress and harbor for the Russian Navy. Taganrog became the first Russian naval base and seaport on the open coast. It was also the first Russian town built on a regular plan.

The fortress was originally called Troyetsk, then Troitsk and finally Taganrog. Peter I even intended to transfer the capital of the country to Taganrog. But Russia lost the war against Turkey and it determined the fate of the town.

More Historical Facts…

Under the terms of the peace treaty, Russia was to destroy the harbor and the town itself. By February 1712, these works were completed. In 1769, during another Russian-Turkish war, the restoration of Taganrog began by Catherine’s the Great order.

Taganrog lost its military importance after the founding of Sevastopol in 1783. The town turned into the largest trade port in the Russian Empire.

In 1820, A.S.Pushkin stayed in Taganrog during his trip to the Caucasus. He spent the night in the house of P.A.Papkov, the mayor of the town. In 1825, the Emperor Alexander I died in this house (corner of Grecheskaya Street, 40 and Dvortsovy (Nekrasovsky) Avenue). Later, the memorial museum of the Emperor Alexander I was opened in the house.

In May 1855, during the Crimean War of 1853-1856, the English-French squadron entered the Sea of Azov, trying to deprive the Russian army in the Crimea its rear bases. The squadron bombarded Taganrog and tried to make a landing. The gunboat “Jasper” was destroyed by Cossacks during the landing operation near Taganrog. In August, the squadron stopped unsuccessful attempts and left the Sea of Azov.

Fertile agricultural regions located close to the town contributed to its development. Taganrog became an important center for the wheat and flax trade. In 1869, the railroad connected the town with Kharkov and Rostov-on-Don.

In the 19th century, Taganrog continued to be a major center of trade. Today, there are several houses of Italian and Greek merchants that retained since that time. At the end of the 19th century, the local industry began to develop quickly; metallurgical, boiler and machine-building plants were constructed. In 1908, the first power station was built.

In 1918-1920, during the Russian Civil War, the General Headquarters of Denikin (the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian South) was located in Taganrog. Since 1937, the city is part of the Rostov region. Taganrog was occupied by the Germans for almost two years during World War II. After the war, the local economy recovered rapidly.

There are even records that he was fined here for smuggling contraband cigars. A special day for Garibaldi came on a visit to Taganrog in April 1833, as his schooner charged with a shipment of oranges was moored for ten days in the Taganrog seaport. While the ship was unloading, the young captain walked through the streets of the city, visiting the houses of Italians who lived in Taganrog, and spending the night in little port inns. In one of such inns, he met Giovanni Battista Cuneo from Oneglia, a political immigrant from Italy and member of the secret movement "Young Italy"( ). Later, Garibaldi described this meeting in the following way: " ". In Taganrog, Giuseppe Garibaldi joined the society "Young Italy" and took an oath of dedicating his life to struggle for liberation of his Homeland from Austrian dominance.

During the second half of the 19th century the foreign trade turnover of Taganrog increased distinctly. Already at the beginning of the 20th century Taganrog held the second place in Russia in the importation and the sixth in the quantity of exported products. Due to dramatic developments in domestic commerce, the fairs lost their dominant role, and the stores, these 'eternal trade points' started to appear in the city. Petrovskaya Street and Gogolevski Street turned into main commercial highways of Taganrog.

The foreign investments into Russian economy influenced the development of a large-scale industry in Taganrog. In 1896 with Belgian investments, started the construction of the . Next year the factory began to function. The plant produced iron beams, railings, pipes, railway bands, iron sheets, rolled steel.

In 1896 the Belgian company “Albert Neuve, Wilde & Co” started the building of the . Besides the boilers, the works produced metallurgical constructions, iron and coppery castings, although it was inferior to the steel plant in the production volume and workers quantity. The tannery, founded in 1853, passed into the hands of the Belgian experts and was distinctly enlarged then.

Russian playwright and poet who settled in Taganrog in 1857 influenced a lot the way the city and the neighboring area developed. Kukolnik was the first to prove the need of university education in the Don River region and on Azov Sea. His offer to open a university in Taganrog was not successful, but later it proved to be an important foundation for opening the Novorossiysk University in 1865. also proved necessity of a newspaper in Taganrog. It was one of the reasons to open newspaper-publishing houses not only in Taganrog, but also in Odessa and Rostov on Don. Since 1865 Nestor Kukolnik led the workgroup that proved necessity of a railroad line from Kharkov to Taganrog. This work was success and Russian tsar Alexander II approved the project in 1868. He also was the first to raise the issue of environmental protection of the Gulf of Taganrog. But the related project encountered strong resistance from regional leadership and was not realized. assisted in opening the county court in Taganrog, open after his death in 1869.

In 1887, the Taganrog's status as a borough was annulled, and Taganrog was annexed to the Don Voisko Province (earlier Taganrog was part of Yekaterinoslav government). According to the "City Statute" of 1870, the was established in Taganrog for managing local development, trade, healthcare and public education.

Since the 1870 the roadwork was expanded. By the end of the century the main part of the downtown streets was already paved. At the same time the greenery was planted in the city center.

In 1866, the new building was erected by the Italian architect Londeron. Thanks to the excellent acoustics of its hall, the theatre gained a nationwide glory. The plays of , M.Gorky, A.N. Ostrovsky, W. Shakespeare were performed here. The special pride of the citizens was the Italian opera, financed by the local merchants, patrons of art. Taganrog theater had its own Italian opera from 1866 to 1875.

Coat of arms

This port city on the Taganrogsky Bay of the Sea of Azov can trace its history centuries back to the days when it was an ancient Greek outpost, even being mentioned by the historian Herodotus. However the modern city named Taganrog can be given a specific date of foundation - 12 September 1698. On this day Peter the Great decreed the creation of a naval base for the Azov Flotilla of the Black Sea Fleet. The emphasis of the port later shifted from a military to commercial function, especially in terms of the export of Russian grain.

In 1825 Emperor Alexander I was at his summer residence in Taganrog when he unexpectedly died. His sudden death and the resulting confusion about his successor led to the failed revolution of the Decembrists. On a happier note though, the city is even more famous for being the birthplace of perhaps Russia’s most famous playwright and short story writer - Anton Chekhov - and the house where he was born has survived and is now a museum.

  • Frequency range : FM, LW, MW, 6 x SW (49 - 16 m band)

  • Batteries : 5 x 1,5 V ( UM-3 )
  • 230 x 40 x 140 mm, 0.8 kg

The Grundig Yacht Boy 100 / 120 is a portable multiband „pocket radio“, with it's dimensions of 23 x 4 x 14 cm and a weight of 800 g, it will fit in your coat pocket or find some space in your suitcase without problems.

The Yacht Boy 100 is an early example of the small Grundig travel portables with a bandspread dial for several shortwave bands; the Yacht Boy 120 is a very similar set with a digital clock / timer added. The set was available in black and in silver colour.

The set covers VHF / FM, long and mediumwaves and six broadcast shortwave bands from 49 - 16 meters. In the middle of the front panel, you find the slide control for volume, a thumbwheel tone control and a sliding switch to select one of the shortwave wavebands.

The analog dials for the wavebands are located at the right half of the frontpanel, the tuning knob on the right side. Four pushbuttons are used to switch on the set and to select the waveband, a fifth smaller pushbutton switches off the radio.

The tiny window for the quartz clock is located above the speaker grill only on the Yacht Boy 120 model. You can set the clock to display the time, the minutes and seconds only, you can set the timer to wake you by radio music or a buzzer sound. A red glowind LED next to the tuning dial will act as signel strength indicator for strong stations.

The set is powered by five AA batteries for the radio and an additional clock battery, there is a connector for a matching Grundig external power supply. The antenne is a 70 cm flexible / rotating telescopic antenna.

The set has an adequate sensitivity on shortwaves, but it's analog dial with coarse frequency markings is a serious drawback, the set receives only on six shortwave broadcast bands, the 22 meter band is omitted and out of band channels cannot be tuned.

With it's clock timer, the Grundig Yacht Boy will make a fine travel radio as long as you rely on FM and mediumwaves and just want to catch up some news from the BBC or Deutsche Welle. If You really have to rely on informations from your home on shortwaves, you should invest some more money in a set with a digital frequency display - from this aspect, the Grundig Yacht Boy 100 / 120 can be considered as collector's item that sometimes can be found for a few Euros at an online auction.

Single conversion superhet

The set is completely solid state.
