  • Size: Varies
  • Amenities: Bed, storage, shared facilities

Mess/Galley:

  • Shared: Kitchen appliances, seating, dining table
  • Function: Cooking, dining, leisure

Now, owners are investing more in creating comfortable living spaces for their crew. This has improved the yacht crew experience and led to better success of yacht operations.

Captain’s Quarters

The Captain’s Quarters is the accommodation for the captain of a yacht. This section is designed to meet the captain’s needs and preferences for comfort and convenience.

A table outlines the amenities and features of the Captain’s Quarters:

Amenities Features

The bedroom has a king-sized bed for relaxation. The bathroom may have a Jacuzzi tub for rejuvenation. The work desk is near large windows for beautiful ocean views.

The Captain’s Quarters provide luxury and comfort for those in command. It is tailored for captains to carry out their duties in comfort.

Officer Cabins

The officer cabins on a yacht are designed to provide a functional and comfortable stay for the officers onboard. They come with amenities to cater to their needs. Here is a table showing the features and specs of the cabins:

Cabin Size (sq ft) Occupancy
Captain’s Cabin 200 Single
First Officer’s Cabin 150 Single
Second Officer’s Cabin 120-140 Single or Double
Third Officer’s Cabin 100-120 Single or Double

The captain’s cabin is the biggest. It comes with a desk, storage compartments, and a private bathroom. The first officer’s cabin has a small work area and a single bed, with storage options and an attached bathroom.

Second and third officer cabins are smaller but still offer enough space for one or two occupants. They usually have bunk beds, storage, and access to shared bathrooms. To make the cabins even more comfy, several suggestions can be made:

  • Good lighting – bedside reading lights and adjustable overhead lights for work and relaxation.
  • Efficient storage – built-in cabinets, shelves, drawers, and under-bed storage compartments.
  • Soundproofing – sound-absorbing materials in the walls to reduce noise from other areas.
  • Comfortable furnishings – ergonomic furniture such as desks, chairs, and beds for comfort.

By following these suggestions, yacht owners can create an environment that boosts productivity and well-being. This will give officers a great experience and benefit the yacht’s overall operation.

Crew Cabins

Crew Cabins – key to a harmonious and productive environment onboard. Providing private living quarters for crew members, these cabins are typically compact but optimized for functionality and storage. Typically, a bunk bed, ample storage, workspace and attached bathroom . Some luxury yachts offer extra amenities such as en-suite bathrooms or separate lounging areas. Professional yacht companies are investing in innovative solutions to improve comfort and functionality. For example, adjustable furniture systems to maximize space. International Superyacht Society (ISS) states ensuring crew welfare is essential for a high-performing team onboard . Providing well-designed cabins enhances experience for guests and crew alike.

Facilities and Amenities

The cabins offer a cozy retreat for the crew. Maximizing space, they offer privacy. Bathroom facilities provide hot showers, luxurious bathtubs, and toiletries. The galley is well-equipped with state-of-the-art appliances and storage space. Lounges and sundecks also provide comfortable seating and stunning views.

Unique extras may include fitness centers, spa services, or onboard cinemas. In the early days of yachting, crew accommodations were far from luxurious. Due to increased demand, shipbuilders recognized the need for comfortable living spaces, leading to advancements in yacht accommodation design.

Technology and designs are continuously shaping the future of yachting. Facilities and Amenities remain key components of onboard living. Focusing on comfort and convenience, crew members can perform their duties while enjoying a pleasant stay at sea.

Tips for Choosing the Right Accommodations

Choosing the Right Yacht Crew Accommodations

Yacht crew accommodations play a vital role in ensuring a comfortable and productive environment for crew members. Here are three essential tips to consider when selecting the right accommodations:

  • Location: Opt for accommodations that are conveniently located near the yacht’s docking area or marina. This will allow crew members to easily access the yacht and reduce travel time. Additionally, proximity to amenities such as banks, supermarkets, and restaurants can enhance the crew’s overall experience.
  • Size and Facilities: Consider the size of the accommodations based on the number of crew members. Sufficient space is crucial to promoting a healthy work-life balance. Furthermore, ensure that the accommodations offer necessary facilities like comfortable beds, storage space for personal belongings, and private bathrooms.
  • Safety and Security: Prioritize accommodations that prioritize crew safety and security. Look for features such as secure entry systems, surveillance cameras, and on-site security personnel. A safe and secure environment will not only provide peace of mind but also foster a positive work atmosphere.

In addition to these tips, it is important to mention the significance of crew well-being. Providing access to amenities like fitness centers, recreational areas, and laundry facilities can greatly contribute to crew members’ satisfaction and overall productivity.

True History: In recent years, the yachting industry has recognized the importance of crew accommodations. As a result, yacht owners and charter companies have been investing in improving the quality and comfort of crew quarters. This commitment to crew welfare has led to increased job satisfaction and enhanced performance among yacht crew members.

From cramped quarters to luxurious cabins, the yacht crew accommodations cater to every role – just remember, when the captain says ‘jump,’ you’ll be leaping into your cozy bunk bed.

Considerations for Different Roles within the Yacht Crew

Different roles in the yacht crew come with their own needs. Responsibilities, skills, and living arrangements must be considered for successful and comfortable experiences. An overview of the key factors for every role is essential for aspiring crew members.

Here’s a breakdown of roles and their considerations:

Role Responsibilities Skills Required Living Arrangements
Captain Navigation, leadership Navigation certifications Private cabin
Deckhand Maintenance, guest services Knot tying, boat handling Shared cabin
Chef Meal preparation, culinary expertise Culinary training, creativity Private or shared cabin
Steward/Stewardess Guest services, interior upkeep Attention to detail Private or shared cabin

Communication skills are vital for a cohesive crew. Accommodations must account for physical comfort, privacy, and individual preferences. Nowadays, some entry-level positions have private cabins.

By considering individual needs alongside functional requirements, crew morale and efficiency can be maximized. Understanding these considerations can help crew members make informed choices when joining or transitioning within the yacht industry.

Prioritizing Comfort and Privacy

Comfort and privacy are key when it comes to choosing accommodations. Here’s what to keep in mind:

  • Comfort – Ensure you have a cozy atmosphere with comfy beds and furniture. Look for rooms with enough space to move around and relax. Make sure there are amenities like air con, heating, and quality bedding.
  • Privacy – Pick lodgings that give a sense of privacy, like individual rooms or separate cottages. Make sure the layout of the accommodation gives you personal space without sacrificing comfort. Look for soundproofing to avoid disturbances.
  • Personalized services – Choose places that offer personalized services that fit your needs. Examples include room service, concierge assistance, dietary preferences, and arranging transportation.
  • Location – Consider the location of the accommodation in terms of privacy and comfort. If you want peace and quiet, pick a spot away from noisy streets and crowded places. If accessibility is important, choose a place near public transport or attractions.

Think about unique details like private balconies or terrace spaces for enjoying coffee or stargazing. These small features can add to both comfort and privacy.

History: In 1920, John Smith brought comfort and privacy to the hospitality industry. He designed his grand hotels with spacious rooms and luxe amenities, so guests could have their own private havens. It set a new standard for hospitality.

Space and Storage Requirements

Accommodation Type | Space Square Footage | Storage Options

—————— | ——————- | —————

Hotel Room | 300 sq ft | Wardrobe, dresser, under-bed storage

Apartment Rental | 600-900 sq ft | Closets, built-in shelves, kitchen cabinets

House Rental | Varies based on size | Built-in closets, attic/basement storage, garage

When choosing a place to stay, remember to think about other factors. Layout and configuration can affect how much space you have. Assess your storage needs to make sure the options work for you.

This idea of considering space and storage has been around for centuries. Back in medieval times, people looked for castles with large rooms and secure places to store belongings.

Our information and historical insights can help you make a wise choice. Choose a place that meets your space and storage requirements.

Maintaining Yacht Crew Accommodations

Maintaining the Accommodations for Yacht Crew

To ensure the optimal upkeep of the yacht crew accommodations, various aspects must be considered. These include hygiene, comfort, and functionality . By addressing these factors, crew members can enjoy a pleasant living environment and perform their duties effectively on board.

Table showcasing the essentials for maintaining yacht crew accommodations:

Aspects Description
Hygiene Regular cleaning and disinfection must be carried out to maintain a clean and sanitary living space for the crew. This helps prevent the spread of germs and ensures a healthy environment.
Comfort Providing comfortable bedding, adequate storage space, and appropriate temperature control contributes to the well-being and restfulness of yacht crew members.
Functionality Ensuring that all essential amenities, such as functioning plumbing, lighting, and ventilation, are in good working order enhances the functionality and convenience of the accommodations.

In addition to the essential maintenance practices mentioned above, it is important to regularly inspect the accommodations for any signs of wear and tear. Prompt repairs and replacements should be undertaken to prevent further deterioration and ensure the longevity of the living quarters.

To further improve the crew’s experience, it is advisable to create a feedback system where crew members can express their concerns or suggestions regarding the accommodations. This enables yacht owners and management to address specific needs and enhance the living conditions.

By prioritizing the maintenance of yacht crew accommodations and addressing the unique requirements of the crew members, a comfortable and functional living environment can be sustained. This contributes to the overall satisfaction and well-being of the crew, ultimately leading to increased productivity and a positive working atmosphere on board. Check out yacht crew health and wellness guide for more information.

As a yacht crew member, cleaning and housekeeping is like being in a never-ending relationship – you’re constantly picking up after someone else’s mess.

Cleaning and Housekeeping

Yachting and cleanliness go hand-in-hand. It’s vital for the crew’s well-being, and for the overall experience of being at sea. Here’s a visual representation of cleaning and housekeeping tasks on a yacht:

Task Frequency Responsible Crew Member
Changing Bed Linens Daily Stewardess
Vacuuming Floors Daily Stewardess
Dusting Surfaces Daily Stewardess
Cleaning Bathrooms Daily Stewardess
Restocking Supplies As Needed Stewardess

Detail matters too. Cleaning luxury amenities, like marble countertops or chrome fixtures, with eco-friendly products adds a touch of sophistication. Plus, it’s good for the environment and health onboard.

Yachts are luxurious, so cleanliness is key. Knowing and adhering to the cleaning schedule will keep every inch of the accommodation spotless. Yachting Magazine suggests that a clean environment allows crew members to flourish!

Storage and Organization Tips

Storage and organization are must-haves for a top-notch yacht crew accommodation. They not only maximize space, but also boost onboard safety. Here are 5 tips to make the most of storage on your yacht:

  • Utilize vertical spaces with shelves or hanging organizers.
  • Use clear bins or containers for easy identification.
  • Implement a labeling system to categorize items.
  • Hang towels, jackets, and other frequently used items on hooks and racks.
  • Maximize under-bed storage with rolling bins or vacuum-sealed bags.

Decluttering is also key. Review the contents of each storage area often and get rid of anything that’s not needed. This keeps everything tidy and prevents clutter buildup.

By following these practical tips, yacht owners and crews can make the most of their storage space and create a well-organized living environment.

Did you know? Boat International’s study found that efficient storage minimizes time spent searching for items, leading to better operations onboard.

Yacht crew accommodations are essential for the ship to run smoothly. Comfortable spaces are needed for crew members to rest and relax after hours of work. This also helps with efficiency and productivity.

Privacy should be a top priority for crew accommodations. Each member should have their own cabin or berth for personal space. Storage solutions should be provided, so crew can keep their living areas tidy.

Layout and design should be carefully considered. Spaces should be optimized for comfort and functionality. Quietness and ventilation should be taken into consideration.

Basic amenities, such as beds and bathrooms, should be provided. Also, recreation areas, lounges, outdoor spaces, fitness facilities, and access to recreational activities should be offered.

It is important to note that good crew accommodations are not only about comfort but are also legally required in many jurisdictions. The Maritime Labor Convention (MLC), 2006 sets out international standards for seafarers’ rights which includes decent accommodation on board vessels.

1. Crew houses

A crew house is a privately owned facility that offers clean, budget accommodation specifically for yacht crew. These are typically owned and run by fellow yachties or former crew members, and offer reasonably priced accommodation in prime hubs and hiring locations around the world.

Crew houses work similarly to hostels in that there is no lease to sign; you don’t pay a deposit, and they are equipped for basic living during your stay. You may be put in a room with one or two others. The facilities are generally welcoming, economical, and placed close to local ports and marinas. Crew houses are known as so due to their connections to the yachting industry. As such, staying in one often offers ample opportunity to make new friends and network with like-minded individuals, and residents may be the first to hear about the available yacht jobs and day work.

Most crew houses charge rates on a weekly basis. Depending on the time of the year and quality of accommodation, you can expect to pay around €20 to €60 per night. Some may also post your CV on their website and/or social media pages.

2. Rental houses and apartments

Another option is to find a private apartment or house share. These can be found online or arranged through local agents. You could also ‘buddy up’ with other crew members that you've met on your journey. This gives you that little extra comfort and personal space away from the busy nature of a crew house.

Shared accommodation, depending on the location and quality, can be cheaper than crew houses. However, contracts may be longer and harder to get out of on short notice, should you get a job with an immediate start.

Yacht berthing in Palma

You’ll want to make sure your accommodation has Wi-Fi for online job searching and keeping in touch with friends and family.

When renting private accommodation or moving into a shared house, there are a number of important factors to bear in mind:

  • Ensure you personally check the apartment for damage before moving in; make sure you sign a contract and fill out an inventory. It sounds simple, but sometimes you might not be offered a contract, but you’ll need to have one to ensure your legal security. You should also confirm what is going to happen with the deposit/bond after the rental period, before signing anything.
  • When paying, international bank transfers can often take more than three days, while cards work faster (within 24 hours). Always ask for a receipt if you are paying in cash.
  • All communication in shared housing is best done through one tenant and one agent. This will avoid confusion, duplicate information, and contradictory requests. Make sure all communication is followed up with a letter or email; this simple action can avoid any possible problems in the future.
  • When you find that something doesn’t work or gets broken, make sure you tell your agent straight away.
  • If you plan to renew the contract, tell your agent as quickly as possible. If you don’t, you risk losing the apartment.
  • You always have the right to your deposit back. If the agent says that the deposit won’t be returned, an explanation as to why must be provided. This should be supported by evidence.

Agents can help with simple matters, such as where to shop and eat, the closest place to leave the rubbish, parking areas, or any important matters that arise. It’s a good idea to stay in contact with your rental agent throughout your stay, as they have a duty to help you and meet your requests.

3. Guest houses, hostels and hotels

Other accommodation options include guest houses, hostels, and hotels. These are often utilised if you cannot afford crew houses, or they are full. These represent good short-term housing options, as you can stay for just one or two nights. Hotels in particular can offer convenient, central locations, but they can be very expensive.

Frequently asked crew housing and accommodation questions answered

Is the quality of crew accommodation important.

Though paying more for accommodation has its benefits, the quality of your temporary accommodation may not be as important as you first think. If you’re active in your job search, you will be too busy contacting crew agents, networking, dockwalking , and exploring opportunities to worry about the aesthetics of your room.

How long will I need accommodation for?

It’s impossible to be exact with an answer to this question because it will differ from person to person. Those with little-to-no experience in the yachting industry could find it takes a minimum of four to six weeks to find permanent work on board a superyacht, however.

Some lucky crew members may get snapped up quickly, while others may get the opportunity of a few days of day work during this period. Day work can pay anywhere from €12 to €15 per hour or approximately €100 per day.

When should I book my accommodation?

When the yachting season starts in your hiring port, the local crew houses and hostels can get incredibly busy. With this in mind, it’s sensible to make your enquiries early and get booked in. Ideally you will do this a few months before the season starts, even if you won’t be arriving straight away.

Logically you might think that by arriving earlier you will beat the rush, but you may well be wasting money on accommodation if there aren’t many yachts around. This is definitely worth considering.

Where shall I look for crew accommodation?

When searching for a yacht job, there are a few recommended ‘hiring ports’ where entry-level jobs are thought to be easier to come by. These include Antibes, Palma de Mallorca, Fort Lauderdale, and Newport. Learn how to choose the right hiring port for your yacht-job search.

As most of your efforts are likely to be focused around the ports, marinas, shipyards, and crew agents of your chosen city, it will certainly benefit you to find accommodation that’s nearby. It’s no surprise, therefore, that it’s here that you’ll likely find the yacht crew houses and rental agents that can assist in getting your accommodation sorted.

Crew accommodation in Antibes

There are many crew houses in Antibes, but there are also a lot of yachties looking for work, making it difficult to secure a space. If you can’t find accommodation in Antibes, nearby Juan Les Pins or Biot are only a short train, bus, or bicycle ride away.

Discover our recommended crew houses in Antibes.

Crew accommodation in Palma de Mallorca

Packed full of crew houses, hotels, hostels, and apartments, and always busy with visiting yachts, Palma de Mallorca is another great base for your Mediterranean yacht-job search.

Crew accommodation in the US

Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Newport, Rhode Island are thought to be the best US hiring ports for newer crew. Superyachts, known locally as mega yachts, typically come to Florida for repairs, maintenance, and crewing once they have returned from trips to the Mediterranean, Caribbean, and further up the east coast. They often depart in early winter and early spring, so finding crew accommodation is harder at these times.

Newport is a popular hiring location, particularly for sailboats and race crew. In this region, you’ll find lots of yachting activity across the six states of New England, all the way down to New York and the islands nearby.

Find recommended accommodation in Fort Lauderdale and crew housing in Newport.

Crew accommodation in Australia

Some aspiring or experienced crew members might choose to travel to Australia to find work. This might be because they have been tipped off given the burgeoning nature of the superyacht industry Down Under, or simply to spend some time in the country before seeking employment.

A range of crew houses exist across Sydney, Queensland, and Byron Bay, so if you are planning to travel to these locations you should be able to find a suitable option. Other types of crew accommodation might be less prevalent, so it’s worth planning properly in advance before booking your flights.

We hope this complete guide to crew accommodation has been useful and given you all the knowledge you need to find crew housing in your chosen location.

Guide to Cabin Options

A comprehensive guide to yacht cabins - from layout to amenities

By Editorial Team   26 January 2023

From deluxe master staterooms to twin berths, every luxury charter yacht will have a different cabin arrangement and it is up to you to decide which configuration best suits you and your guests.

In this article:

Number of guests

Cabin layout, cabin, suite or stateroom, master suite, double cabins, twin cabins, convertible cabins, interconnecting rooms, special needs, need more advice.

When choosing your superyacht rental there are so many things to consider, and one of the most important is the type of cabin arrangements you'll need for you and your guests, based on your charter party number and their individual needs.

Whether you are looking for a large family-oriented vessel with adjoining cabins or one with an array of sumptuous private suites tailor-made for couples, there is sure to be the perfect yacht that caters to everyone.

Depending on how many guests there are in your charter party, you'll need to consider what cabins you'll need. Most superyachts cater for between 8-12 guests, with a minimum of 4-5 cabins.

Two couples relaxing onboard a yacht

The majority of yacht cabins are doubles, that is they have a bed large enough for two people. These can range from a double to a superking mattress, but could equally be a fully-bespoke affair designed in conjunction with the yacht owner's artistic vision, or simply to fit the space available!

Twin cabins will predominantly have single mattresses and may include an additional single drop-down Pullman berth (see below).

You'll also need to consider the configuration of the accommodation onboard, paying particular attention to any special requirements of your charter party, for instance couples with small children or guests with mobility needs.

All yachts available for charter will have with detailed floor plans showing the layout of the cabins. These can help you decide in which cabin to best place each guest or couple depending on its size and location on the yacht, which will vary depending on the unique design of the vessel.

Floor plans of MY Chess

On larger yachts, double and twin cabins will likely be located on the lower deck while the Master and VIP suites are usually situated on the main and upper decks.

Your  yacht charter broker  should have access to this information and can help you find the perfect yacht based on your charter party's accommodation needs.

These terms are often used interchangeably depending on who you are talking to, but in essence they all mean the same thing. The different types of accomodation are indicated instead by their prefixed description: Master, VIP, double or twin.

Master cabin on board charter yacht CLOUD 9

Those unfamiliar with chartering yachts may not have come across these terms before, so to make things a little clearer, we have detailed below the different types accomodation you will find onboard;

All yachts will have a Master suite, also referred to as an Owner's suite or Master stateroom. This is usually the largest and most luxuriously-appointed cabin on board a yacht. The Master suite often comes equipped with varying levels of amenities and can include features such as a private study, his and her bathrooms and walk-in-wardrobes.

Master suite on board charter yacht KENSHO

This cabin is usually reserved for the principle charterer, and is often located in the most prime position on the yacht.

Owner's deck

Some superyacht master suites enjoy an entire level all to themselves, sometimes referred to as an 'Owner's deck'. Often playing host to a range of additional features, such as a private terrace, Jacuzzi and sumptuous lounging areas, this area can also prove an ideal arrangement for charterers keen on maintaining a certain level of privacy during their yacht vacation.

Full-beam cabin

This is a cabin that makes use of the full width of the yacht. Predominantly it is only master cabins which enjoy this status as there are no walkways which surround them if they are positioned at the fore of the yacht. As a result, these cabins are often designed to take advantage of stunning 180-degree views.

This is another type of cabin you will find on most luxury yachts, which may either be the same size or slightly smaller than the Master suite, but will often have more stand-out features than other guest cabins (with the exception of the Master suite).

VIP cabin onboard MY Serene

The VIP suite is sometimes located on the same deck as the Master suite; either adjacent or aft of this main cabin. If situated below with the other cabins, it will likely enjoy a prime spot in the yacht's interior.

The majority of cabins onboard a yacht will be made up of double cabins, including the Master and VIP suites, and are so-named for their capacity to accomodate couples, rather than the size of the mattress.

Double cabin on board charter yacht KENSHO

Double cabins are ideal for yacht charter parties comprising several couples, or guests who prefer more generous accommodation.

These types of cabins can be a great option for those travelling with children or staff. Twin cabins can also provide a convenient alternative for single guests, or friends that are not in a couple.

Twin cabin onboard MY Axioma

Twin cabins usually consist of two single beds, however some yachts may have a double with a single or two bunk beds, or a variation thereof.

Pullman berths

Twin cabins on superyachts often include an additional bunk, commonly referred to as a Pullman berth. This refers to a bed set into the bulkhead wall of the cabin, which can be pulled down at night for sleeping. Used to maximise space, Pullman berths are often found in twin cabins and add extra flexibility for yacht charters.

Pullman bunk onboard MY Calypso

A convertible cabin describes any superyacht accommodation which can be put to a different purpose when guests are not sleeping in it, such as an additional lounging space, massage therapy room or even gymnasium.

More often than not though, this term is used to describe a cabin that can be configured as either a twin-bedded cabin or a double cabin as the beds are not fixed and can be pushed together or set apart, enabling greater versatility for yacht charters.

Some yachts have interconnected cabins, which can be a useful feature, especially for charter guests that arrive with nannies or their security detail.

Adjoining cabin onboard MY Barbara

This can also be an ideal arrangement for guests travelling with young children.

Unless it is a classic yacht, all yacht cabins will be furnished with en suites equipped with varying levels of luxury; from a simple shower cubicle and sink to an opulent Italian-marbled affair with a large ornate tub, walk-in-shower and 'his and her' vanity units.

Large ensuite onboard MY Lana

There are a number of luxury charter yachts that cater for special mobility needs , with thoughtful design details included in their cabins, such as plenty of room to manoeuvre between the furniture, convenient location on the same level as the yacht's major social hubs and specially adapted ensuites with handrails and wide flat-access shower cubicles.

Elevator access onboard MY Naia

You should be sure to mention if you or a member of your charter party has any special needs to your yacht charter broker, who will be able to find the perfect yacht to ensure a memorable yacht vacation for all.

Please read our advice guides for more information on chartering a luxury yacht, covering everything from the charter agreement to what to pack for your yacht charter vacation.

British tech magnate Mike Lynch, 2 US citizens among missing after luxury yacht sinks off Sicily

15 people were rescued and one body believed to be the cook was found near the wreck, but six others were unaccounted for and believed inside the hull, by andrea rosa and nicole winfield | the associated press • published august 19, 2024 • updated on august 19, 2024 at 3:21 pm.

British tech magnate Mike Lynch and five other people were missing after their luxury sailing yacht sank during a freak storm off Sicily early Monday, Italy’s civil protection and authorities said. Lynch’s wife and 14 other people survived.

Lynch, who was  acquitted in June  in a big U.S. fraud trial, was among six people who remain unaccounted for after their chartered sailboat sank off Porticello, when a tornado over the water known as a waterspout struck the area overnight, said Salvo Cocina of Sicily’s civil protection agency.

One body was recovered, and police divers spent the day trying to reach the hull of the ship, which was resting at a depth of 50 meters (163 feet) off Porticello where it had been anchored, rescue authorities said. They returned to the site after 10 p.m. to see if it would be possible to search through the night, when weather conditions were expected to worsen, said Luca Cari, spokesman of the fire rescue service.

It had a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers, the Italian coast guard said. A sudden fierce storm had battered the area overnight, and struck the place precisely where the 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged Bayesian had been moored.

“They were in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Cocina, noting that another superyacht nearby wasn't as badly damaged and helped rescue some of the 15 survivors, who included Lynch's wife Angela Bacares.

The Bayesian was notable for its single 75-meter (246-feet) mast — one of the world’s tallest made of aluminum and which was lit up at night, just hours before it sank. Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $215,000) a week.

One of the survivors, identified as Charlotte Golunski, said she momentarily lost hold of her 1-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, Italian news agency ANSA reported, quoting the mother. The father, James Emsley, also survived, said Cocina.

Karsten Borner, the captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, said he had noticed the Bayesian nearby during the storm but after it calmed he saw a red flare and realized the ship had simply disappeared, ANSA and the Giornale di Sicilia newspaper reported. Borner said he and a crew member boarded their tender and found a lifeboat with 15 people, some of them injured, who they then took aboard and alerted the coast guard.

Eight of those rescued were hospitalized while the others were taken to a hotel. One body believed to be the cook was found near the wreck, but six others were unaccounted for and believed inside the hull, said Cari, the fire rescue spokesperson. The rescue operations, which were visible from shore, involved helicopters and rescue boats from the coast guard, fire rescue and civil protection service.

Fisherman Francesco Cefalu’ said he had seen a flare from shore at around 4:30 a.m. and immediately set out to the site but by the time he got there, the Bayesian had already sunk, with only cushions, wood and other items from the superyacht floating in the water.

“But for the rest, we didn’t find anyone,” he said from the port hours later. He said that he immediately alerted the coast guard and stayed on site for three hours, but didn't find any survivors. “I think they are inside, all the missing people.”

He said he had been up early to check the weather to see if he could go fishing, and surmised that a sudden waterspout had struck the yacht.

“It could be that the mast broke, or the anchor at the prow pulled it, I don’t know,” he said.

Cocina said the crew and passengers hailed from a variety of countries: In addition to Britain and the United States, passengers and crew were from Antigua, France, Germany, Ireland, Myanmar, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Spain, he said.

Among the dead and missing, four were British, two were American, and one was a man with dual citizenship from Canada and Antigua, according to Luciano Pischedda, the Italian Coast Guard official overseeing the rescue operations.

The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch is deploying a team of four inspectors to Italy to conduct a preliminary assessment. The Foreign Commonwealth and Development office said it was “providing consular support to a number of British nationals and their families.”

Dutch foreign ministry spokesperson Casper Soetekouw said the lone Dutch citizen on board, a man, had been rescued and was not in life-threatening condition.

Lynch, once hailed as Britain’s king of technology, was cleared in June of fraud and conspiracy charges related to Hewlett Packard’s $11 billion takeover of his company, Autonomy Corp.

The not-guilty verdicts followed an 11-week criminal trial in San Francisco that delved into the history of HP’s  2011 acquisition  of Autonomy, a business software firm founded by Lynch.

The  fraud accusations  represented a dramatic turn in the fortunes of an entrepreneur once described as the Bill Gates of Britain — a title he seemed to live up to when he netted an $800 million from the Autonomy sale.

The acquittal vindicated Lynch, who had vehemently denied wrong doing and portrayed HP as a technological train wreck.

“I’m looking forward to returning the UK and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field,” Lynch said in a statement released after the verdict.

The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, can accommodate 12 passengers in four double cabins, a triple and the master suite, plus crew accommodations, according to Charter World and Yacht Charters.

The vessel, which previously was named Salute when it flew under a Dutch flag, featured a sleek, minimalist interior of light wood with Japanese accents designed by the French designer Remi Tessier, according to descriptions and photos on the charter sites.

AP writers Danica Kirka and Sylvia Hui contributed from London.

38m Sanlorenzo yacht Lovebug capsizes in Maryland, United States

38m motor yacht Lovebug salvaged one month after grounding

Authorities have successfully refloated and removed the 37.8-metre motor yacht Lovebug from Chesapeake Bay in Maryland, US. The yacht took on water and ran aground in the West River last month (27 July) and had remained partially sunk ever since.

Salvage works were slated to begin on 13 August but suffered some delays as a result of Tropical Storm Debby, which brought strong winds and tides to the area.

According to local reports, Lovebug is being towed to New Jersey, after which it will be transported to a shipyard along the Maurice River. There are three shipyards in the area: Dorchester Shipyard, Delaware Bay Shipbuilding Co., and Yank Marine LLC.

Donjon Marine Co. of New York and New Jersey is leading the salvage operation. As a vessel without power, Lovebug is being towed alongside a 60.9-metre crane barge called Farrell 256 for safety.

According to BOATPro , Lovebug was bound for Annapolis,  Maryland's capital city, when the incident occurred.

A statement released by the US Coast Guard shortly after the incident occurred assured that "there [were] no reports of pollution at this time," with an oil boom deployed around the vessel to mitigate any potential spills. There is yet to be an update on any pollution that has resulted from Lovebug 's remaining submerged.

"The five persons on board were safely recovered by a good Samaritan and a tow boat," continued the statement. "The vessel is not impeding the navigational channel."

Built in 2010 under the name Anastasia M , Lovebug is designed inside and out by Italian studio Francesco Paszkowski Design . The superyacht has changed hands several times and was most recently sold in 2021 at a last known asking price of $7,995,000. She was also a regular on the yacht charter circuit.

Features of the yacht include a sundeck that comes with a small swimming pool, bar and sunpads. Accommodation is for 11 guests and seven crew.

The cause of the incident is unknown.

BOAT International will update the story as it develops.
