Delivered in the late 1980s by the Dutch shipyard Feadship De Vries, “Ice Bear has only ever been used privately, never chartered, and has always been professionally maintained so she’s in excellent condition,” lead broker Kevin Kramer of Burgess said in a news release. “If it wasn’t for her classic styling, which is so emblematic of Feadship, you’d never guess she was delivered in 1988.”
Scott, a lifelong friend of Warren Buffett, was worth an estimated $4.2 billion and owned more than 6% of Berkshire Hathaway Energy when he died in 2021 at the age of 90. He sat on the board of Berkshire Hathaway.
Scott’s ownership of Ice Bear has been widely reported over the decades, though it’s not clear when he acquired the ship. A representative for Burgess declined to comment on any details regarding the ownership.
Ice Bear, which can sleep a total of 10 guests across five cabins, has plenty of spacious lounges and communal areas.
There’s a primary suite with a seating area and private study, a sky lounge, a main saloon, an upper deck observation lounge and two fixed fishing chairs on the exterior main deck.
“She is one of the few sport fishing Feadships I’ve ever seen,” Kramer said. “If sport fishing is your passion, this is the only yacht for you, absolutely tailor-made for the job and designed around that visceral connection with the ocean.”
The vessel can reach speeds up to 15 knots, and 13 knots cruising. It can also take trans-Atlantic trips with a range of 4,850 nautical miles.

The yacht spent much of its 36-year-old life traveling up and down the West Coast, summering in Alaska, where the owners spent most of their time catching halibut and salmon. During the winters, it moved to Costa Rica as a mothership to a smaller, more conventional sportfisherman that chased big pelagics like sailfish and marlin.
Ice Bear ’s cockpit replicates that of a large convertible, with two teak fighting chairs, livewells, fishboxes, an ice chipper, and rocket launchers. A large compartment on the mezzanine deck reveals enough rod stowage to last a lifetime. The yacht also has a tower with a full helm station, designed so the captain has a clear line of sight to the cockpit down below, a key element for a fishing boat.
The interior is the other half of the boat worth mentioning. It underwent a partial refit in the early 2000s to replace the 1980s furniture, but it still remains dated with a formal, wood-rich, and sometimes ornate style that is way out of fashion with today’s minimalist interiors. On Ice Bear , however, the look works.
The full-beam, master suite feels palatial, especially with the adjoining office and lounge. The space is defined by the wood trimming. The bridge deck sky lounge might look like your grandparents’ living room, with the formal furniture and wainscot walls, but it’s warm and inviting with excellent views. Even the stairwell and foyer down to the guest staterooms, typically an afterthought on most yacht designs, is paneled in light woods, with a signature oval design on the ceiling.
Most likely a new owner will redo most of these sections, along with the light woods and cream marbles in the bathrooms. (The superyacht is listed for $9.95 million after a $1.55 million price drop.) But the bones are there, says its brokerage firm Burgess, as well as a hull that, given its age, remains in good shape.
One element that remains timeless is the observation lounge. The upper-deck space is dotted with plush, leather chairs and surrounded by windows. A wetbar in the rear section handles the refreshments. Overhead, the leather blue-covered oval on the ceiling adds a stately look. Perched in a chair, one can easily imagine what it must be like to pull into sub-arctic waters of northern Alaska, with a drink in hand, enjoying the sweeping vistas of the state’s rugged coastline. That is a feature that will stand the test of time.

52m Feadship ICE BEAR for auction
Published 16 September 2024
In a rare collaboration, Burgess and Boathouse Auctions will put ICE BEAR under the hammer on 10 October for a multi-day auction .
52m ICE BEAR was delivered in 1988 by the distinguished Dutch shipyard, Feadship De Vries, with exterior styling by De Voogt. Measuring 614 gross tonnes with a beam of 9.3m (30.5ft), ICE BEAR boasts plenty of spacious lounges and communal areas ideal for relaxing and enjoying time spent at sea.
Lead broker, Kevin Kramer , describes what makes ICE BEAR such a unique purchase opportunity:
‘ICE BEAR has only ever been used privately, never chartered, and has always been professionally maintained so she’s in excellent condition. If it wasn’t for her classic styling, which is so emblematic of Feadship, you’d never guess she was delivered in 1988.
‘What makes this yacht so rare, though, is that she is one of the few sport fishing Feadships I’ve ever seen. If sport fishing is your passion, this is the only yacht for you, absolutely tailor-made for the job and designed around that visceral connection with the ocean.’
How the auction works
ICE BEAR underwent a Patton Marine Survey on 9 September 2024, with reports posted to the auction listing. Buyer due diligence is conducted during a four-week preview period, and prospective buyers are prequalified to bid by placing a deposit into an escrow account.
Once the bidding opens, bids are shown in real time on the website for interested parties to watch. The sale to the highest bidder is final and unconditional. Upon the conclusion of the auction, the auction house moves immediately to closing, so you can sail away in 30 days or less. Perfect for the start of the Caribbean season.
Bidding commences at 16:00 EDT (21:00 BST) on 10 October 2024 via Boathouse Auctions , but registration is already open. So what are you waiting for?

Vintage Feadship yacht Ice Bear listed for auction
The 52-metre vintage Feadship yacht Ice Bear will soon be available for bidding with Boathouse Auctions , in collaboration with central agency Burgess . The auction will begin on 10 October with registration already open.
Delivered in 1988 by the Dutch yard, Ice Bear has an exterior by Frits De Voogt , who also did the naval architecture. Her interior is by Paola D. Smith and Associates in Design . The broker pointed out that Ice Bear has only ever been used privately and is in "excellent condition" with a thorough and professional maintenance programme.
Accommodation is across five cabins, including a full-beam, main deck master suite with a private study, his and hers en suite bathrooms and a walk-in wardrobe. The remaining cabins are positioned on the lower deck and benefit from seating areas and en suite bathrooms. There are further quarters for 11 crew.
Ice Bear is best known for her aft deck, which features two fixed fishing chairs complemented by a range of seating and a crow's nest with an outdoor helm station. She also has 24 decorative polar bears on board, in a nod to her Arctic namesake.
"What makes this yacht so rare is that she is one of the few sportfishing Feadships I've ever seen," said Kevin Kramer of Burgess. " If sport fishing is your passion, this is the only yacht for you, absolutely tailor-made for the job and designed around that visceral connection with the ocean."
Other communal spaces include a formal dining room on the main deck and a satin-finished skylounge and observation deck. There is also storage space for two tenders – an 8.5-metre Shamrock sportfisher and a 5.5-metre RIB.
Key numbers include a volume of 614GT, a 9.3-metre beam and a range of 4,850 nautical miles.
Bidding will commence at 16:00 EDT (21:00 BST) on 10 October 2024.

One of Britain's richest men spotted on his 1930s superyacht in Devon
Alicia has been named for the daughter he lost in a car crash, aged 11 months old.

One of Britain's richest men has been spotted in his newly refurbished 1930's super-yacht - named after his daughter who was tragically killed.
Ian Wace, 55, who has a net worth of £505m, was spotted on board the Alicia, previously known as the Janidore.
The multi-millionaire hedge-fund manager has recently taken back the vintage vessel after it underwent a three-year refurbishment.
It was released following a christening ceremony where it was re-named in honour of Mr Wace's daughter Alicia, who died in a car crash aged 11 months alongside his son Guy, four, and wife Joanna, 34.
Images showed him getting off the vessel after it docked in Dartmouth, Devon.
The 50-metre classic yacht emerged following a major refit at the Southampton Marine yard after work began in 2015.
The ship's systems were rebuilt and the yacht underwent "major structural works".
The yard said that Alicia, which was originally launched in the 1930s as one of the eight yachts to be built by US yard Defoe, had been restored to 'the splendour of her era'.
Alicia is the third iconic super-yacht refit for the yard following Sir Charles Dunstone’s Shemara and Lord Sugar’s Lady A.
Mr Wace's boat also bears more than a passing similarity to James Dyson's 250ft Nahlin. In 2010 it also emerged from a lengthy refit and was pictured pulling in to the same Devon port.
The Nahlin, once owned by newly succeeded King Edward VIII was built in 1930 and boasted six guest staterooms with en-suite bathrooms, a special ladies' sitting room, a gym and a library.
The ship found fame when the royal chose to take his married lover Wallis Simpson on an extended cruise around Eastern Europe.
Mr Wace has now followed in James Dyson's footsteps and has had his own 1930s motor yacht professionally restored and birthed in the same port.
Mr Wace is the chief executive officer, chief risk officer, and founding partner of London's Marshall Wace hedge fund.
He became a successful businessman after witnessing the haunting death of his first wife and their two young children.
Speaking in 2011 Wace said: "The motivating force of my life was the accident.
"It's no use avoiding it - it's the elephant in the room. Something terrible happened to people very dear to me.
"It is what it is, I can't undo it. But a positive force did emerge, in Ark, and I'm happy to be part of that."
Peter Morton, the CEO of The SMS Group, described the yacht as “unquestionably beautiful” and said the launch was “a major positive milestone in another huge refit project.
He said: “The project has seen the best of British design, innovation and engineering and we now look forward to a successful period of trials pre-handover."
“Today’s launch is a major positive milestone in another huge refit project for The SMS Group, all our colleagues and all our suppliers.
"It’s big, big news.
"As a company, we are genuinely thrilled to have had the inspiration and support of another truly exceptional British businessman; and whilst the project has been challenging the end result is simply outstanding.
"MY Alicia is unquestionably beautiful.
“MY Alicia, MY Shemara and MY Lady A were all managed by SMS in a totally transparent and honest way – working directly with the owner.
"This ensures the very best value for money and complete control of the project; owners are therefore, masters of their own destiny, which is so very important to all those involved.
"In this case, it was the owner’s vision that has inspired the growth and creation of a business as opposed to just another project; we’re extremely grateful and look forward to very many future successful projects.”
The christening of MY Alicia was caught on camera by Jacek Prawdzik, who also shared many pictures of the boat on social media.
On deck two other boats can be seen, one a motorboat and the other by sail, and a tender is located towards the front of the vessel.
As per tradition, a bottle of champagne was broken on the hull - although it took a few attempts for the bottle to its target. There was also a well-stocked bar at the event.
Alicia is now expected to head for the Mediterranean and join modern and classic yachts for the 20th Les Voiles de Saint Tropez in September.
