Bayview Yacht Club in Detroit Opens $5M Clubhouse Renovation in June

Bayview Yacht Club in Detroit, one of the most storied sailing clubs in the nation, is nearing completion of the renovation of its 86-year-old clubhouse. The project is scheduled to be completed in June.

The project required more than 85 percent of the original building to be demolished and rebuilt at a cost of more than $5 million.

In 2017, the clubhouse was in desperate need of restoration and a survey of the building was conducted. It was quickly realized that the repairs and upgrades needed were more extensive than initially envisioned. In 2018, the BYC Board of Governors approved the renovation and NSA (architect/engineer) and Frank Rewold & Sons (CM) were retained to oversee the project.

“When Bayview’s leadership undertook this project, we had a number of goals,” says Chuck Stormes, 2021 Bayview Yacht Club Commodore. “First and foremost, we wanted to create a facility that would showcase our rich sailing heritage and safeguard our legacy.

“Secondly, we aspired to design a state-of-the-art clubhouse that would embrace our location at the water’s edge and maximize views of the Detroit River. In late spring, we’ll complete the renovation and welcome members, families, and guests into our new home that will position BYC to grow into the next century.”

The usable space inside the newly completed clubhouse will increase by 2,700 square feet, bringing the total to 12,791 square feet. Additionally, the foundation and infrastructure will be completely replaced and updated. The new facility includes flexible dining/banquet spaces, a state-of-the-art kitchen, a second story deck for dining, completely updated A/V, and multi-use rooms.

The new grand entrance and main hallway features a trophy hall with vaulted ceilings that will safeguard and display trophies, plaques, and models that illustrate Bayview’s storied sailing history. Some of these treasures date back more than 100 years.

Founded in 1915, BYC moved to its current Detroit location at 100 Clairpointe St. in 1935. The clubhouse has undergone seven makeovers and additions, the last taking place in 1988. The new design takes advantage of the club’s riverfront location and the panoramic views of downtown Detroit, Belle Isle, and Canada.

“As with many renovation projects involving old and failing infrastructure, the deeper you get into it, the more you discover what needs to be reworked or completely redesigned and replaced,” says Bradford Kimmel, past commodore and renovation chairman of the BYC. “Our clubhouse was no exception. Upon completion, we will have a brand-new state-of-the-art facility built on a solid concrete foundation.”

Several elements from the old clubhouse will be incorporated into the new building, including the original mahogany bar, a sandstone fireplace, and numerous trophies, awards, and memorabilia.

“While we tried to incorporate many traditional elements into the new design, make no mistake, this is a modern, open, and multi-functional facility created for our members, guests, and families,” says Kimmel. “This building has been specifically designed as a first-class venue to promote daily camaraderie, the expansion of membership, and the sport of sailing.”

Legendary! A piece of Detroit history . The food great and the ambience perfect !!!

Happy times!

Still have to give 5 stars - for the history & atmosphere at least ! Food was still very good - served family style - coleslaw, pickles, peppers, chicken soup included with dinners. Tina - LONG time server, barmaid, etc. now only works Friday. Patty - owner keeps it going - new cooks- so food takes bit longer - worth the wait ! If u have never been here - do yourself a favor and go soon ! Just in case . Limited hours - call 1st.

I feel the need to rate this place every time I go. Took 3 friends who grew up within a block from here - 2 of them even delivered newspapers here - yet NEVER had eaten here. Patty and Tina were really working hard as main dining room was packed for lunch. All the friends enjoyed the food, history and ambiance of this place. All promise a return visit with spouses and friends. I endulged in a kielbasa Reuben- was great. Included chicken soup, fries,coleslaw, pickles and peppers. 2 of us went to bar for an after lunch world famous Tina's polish coffee. Fun time.

An incredibly sad - yet happy holiday review. Place was packed at lunchtime.Bill - patty the owner's husband passed away, unexpectedly last week. He was part of the history of this place. Always seated at end of bar- taking care of reservations and greeting everyone. As odd as it seemed that he wasn't there- food and drink never skipped a beat. Shared a kielbasa Reuben and 3 polish coffees- excellent! Hoping they can continue on in 2023 !

Polish yacht club - so glad it's still open. Never had a bad time here. Patty and Tina - best servers around .heaping plate of coleslaw, pickles, peppers and a cup of excellent chicken soup served quickly, before you order dinner or lunch. Shared shrimp dinner and kielbasa plate- came with 2 large potato pancakes. For one of the best after dinner drinks ever- head to the bar and ask for a polish coffee- loaded with whipped cream! Leftovers for tomorrow!

Of course 1 of my favorites- hidden gem in Detroit! Met for lunch with group of sports buddies- the base hits from a while ago became home runs - during the idle chatter. Once again - everything served was delicious. Topped off with a polish coffee after !

A true hidden gem ! Seems like the lunch specials- have an extended menu. Cholesterol be damned for 1 day. Shared a delicious kielbasa sandwich,along with a fried balogna sandwich- also excellent! Served with family sized bowl of coleslaw,along with a pickle,pepper plate. Like being at a friends house- I was also offered free watermelon, cheese- that a vendor just dropped off, along with some homemade dessert. The fries appear to be fresh cut in the kitchen. FUN PLACE !

Like having dinner with your family- if you like your family! Never have had a bad time here. Went for lunch. Had the lite perch dinner- more than enough food and soo good. Like everyone else states- huge plate of pickles and peppers are brought to your table, along with some very good coleslaw. Ordered a side of polish sausage- with optional spicy mustard. Very good also. Finished off with Tina's famous polish coffee, not sure if she makes them for everyone- also not sure what is in them, besides captain Morgan and tons of whipped cream- but they are like truth serum- for certain relatives. One of a kind place ! In a great way .

How can I not give 5 stars again? Quite the classic place. Lunch this time- shared a perch sandwich & a kielbasa sandwich- both excellent. Came with coleslaw, pickles, peppers , fries and soup. Finished it off with 1 of Tina's famous polish coffees- yummy! You could go here a hundred times and still see something different behind the bar, or on the walls. Quite a unique place to say the least !

Once again 5 stars. Nothing to not like about this place.took some out of town relatives - they loved it also ! Tina, patty & entire staff make you feel like you were invited to feast at someone's house. Perch, shrimp, kielbasa, coleslaw - all great. Do yourself a favor and get there if you have never been. Friday is only day dinner is served- reservations required. Closed entire month of august for vacation. Fun place !

Once again_ what a fun place to dine at! Home made chicken soup, coleslaw, pickles and peppers come with every meal! Split a special plate , with pierogi, potato pancake, sauerkraut, fries, ring bologna. Too much food , but great! If you want a VERY good after dinner drink, end up at the bar and ask Tina for a polish coffee! I'd say soooooo good!

A great Friday before Christmas lunch here. Forgot to make reservations, so bellied up to bar and ordered. Love this place. Food, plus the staff always make it a great experience. One of a kind place that everyone should try, at least once. A hunrdred year, plus history in this building!

Everyone should go here at least once. Too great of a place to miss. The building, the food, the owners are just great. Do not be afraid of the neighborhood, no one else is left, soo sad. Sure hope I do not wake up one morning and see that a thug has lit it on on fire..

Probably a 15 year veteran of this unique place. Try to make it here at least 3-4 times a year.if you have never been here you should try it at least once. Do not be afraid of the neighborhood as no one is left here to cause trouble.the perch , sausage pierogis are quite awesome, as is the coleslaw that comes with the dinners.family owned and operated for many many years.the separate dining areas make it seem like you are eating at someone's house.tina, patty and bill treat you like old friends once you have been there a few times.hope it stays open for a long time.

The Polish Yacht Club's Walleye and Perch are some of the best in all of Detroit (only Andrew's competes and it's a bit more expensive). It's a large portion that's cooked perfectly and tastes incredibly fresh (a rarity around here, but I won't name names). It's fried, but not greasy at all, and it's flaky because it's fresh (no squishy fish here, thank God) Every dinner is served with pickles, coleslaw, French fries and soup so the value is ridiculous. They also don't lack condiments (malt vinegar included) which I appreciate. The inside of the Yacht Club genuinely looks like the Cigar Lounge of a Country Club. I love it. Small, casual with old school elegance. And the service gives off that same vibe. It's like you're in a cigar lounge only with no smoking and excellent food. Personally, I loved the Ivanhoe Club and will be back!

I invited friends who hadn't been to ivanhoe's before. It was a group of four and I made a reservation. I arrived early to make sure we got a table. I was seated promptly. Friends started to arrive on time. One was a little late because she got lost but nothing dramatic. We received drinks and appetizers quickly and server was friendly and professional. Then we didn't see her at our table for an hour or more. As she walked by periodically, she would motion that she'd be right over. People who arrived after were served and were finishing their meals. We finally went to the bar to place our order. They close at 3 and we were the last to be served. Reservation was for 12:30 and we didn't finish until 3:30. RIDICULOUS!! Waitress was apologetic and gave us a couple of drinks on the house. Even so I don't think we will be back.

Fun throwback to the old neighborhood bar & restaurant. Mom & Pop-style place with home cooking. This is fun dining, not fine dining. Leave your attitude at the door, relax and take your time to savor the old days and people of Detroit.

The perch and coleslaw were very good. However, the pierogis tasted and looked like frozen and store bought. The potato pancakes were overcooked on the outside and raw and mushy in the middle. The kielbasa was overcooked too. The soup was very salty. We went with a group and they would only charge by the number of plates of food they brought to each table. So, our $17 perch dinner ended up costing each of us $28. The outside of the building had bare plywood over the windows and the inside was very rough looking. I don't know how it passes inspection. Definitely not worth going! I don't know why Yelp has me living in California. I am from Michigan!

Went recently after about 15 years and the place hasn't changed a bit - thankfully. Still great perch and lotsa atmosphere. Thank heaven Patti has kept it open after her husband passed. She does a great job running the place and works hard at making everyone feel at home. Can't wait to go back. Sto lat!!!

My hangout 30 years ago. Love the BBC'S. Watched Patty grow up and get married. I moved to NC in 2,000 and haven't been back since. I had a lot of great friends there and great memories. Been going there since my dad introduced me to this place in the 60's. Great burgers and fish dinners! A Detroit classic, not to be missed!

Ambiance was nice enough for over 100 yr.old resto in the same family; but it also looked like 115 yrs old from the outside. Sidewalks unsafe for walking, entrance into bldg. was also unsafe with poor lighting and dangerous steps in/out. Windows all boarded up with plywood. Food was cold. My 1st. and last visit here was 2-29-24 with a group of 25 people - NEVER go in a group! Singular or pairs might be OK? for this old pub. It's NOT a Polish Yacht Club but owner Patti Ghalen wants to charge Yacht Club prices. *I was initially impressed to see statue of Fr. Solanus Casey in our dining room. I liked the quaint and very old atmosphere of the pub that has been in business for over 100 yrs. with same family. A lot of history was seen here I'm sure as evidence by all the photo's of celebrities and Commodores on the walls. * I have multi food allergies (I called prior to coming here with no response), so I approached the owner Patti Galen to find out what I could/could not have off the menu she had chosen before we got there. She wasn't interested in talking to me, I even tried to give her my list of allergies- again she wasn't interested. "I don't need that". She is obviously unaware of our Federal ADA act re. people with food allergies nor the fact that Michigan also has their own law re. this issue. She could care less and didn't even want to substitute anything. I asked for maybe plain potato or sauerkraut pirogi - she she said nope ... just potato/cheese and I can't have the dairy - cheese. So this isn't much of a Polish restaurant either if they only have the ONE choice of pirogi ?? * so I could NOT eat the 2 pierogi's (cheese), nor the fish (egg battered), nor the coleslaw (mayo/eggs based), nor the store bought butter cookies served for desert). Patti finally sent word to me that I COULD eat the polish sausage since she said there was no GARLIC in it! *(I should have known better of course the polish sausage probably DID have garlic in it ..since I ate 4 slices and then went outside the throw it up.) I ate 1/2 C of the vegi soup that someone dropped the salt shaker into. I had to add water to make it palatable; so I was saving that other 1/2 C of soup in case I wasn't able to eat anything; but our waitress picked it up to throw out before I got the chance to finish it. I was able to eat 1/2 of potato pancake that was burnt...and hot, but I was so hungry at this point I ate half of it anyway, that's when I looked for my salty (watered down) soup to note it was gone! I had asked her could she make my perch a beer batter or steamed. NOPE. I couldn't order off the menu. I guess the home-made F fries were OK, but I wasn't impressed. *Then the real Rip-off starts: I tried to talk to owner Patti about my bill since I really couldn't eat anything but those 2 items, she wouldn't talk to me and wasn't able to tell me "How much do I owe, so I could pay our escort. I should've been charged nothing. -0- She told me to take it up with our Escort.... I reminded her that she is the owner and she is the one who determines the bill! ...but no, she wasn't going to tell me anything & she never did! She was very rude to both me and our trip Escort. * Next Rip -Off our Escort was told she had to pay the entire tab with ONE transaction: Her's only. Luckily she had her own personal Charge card to put all 25 people on HER card, . WE all were expecting to pay our own bills by charge or cash - NOPE. Turns out the owner was charging per piece of food. OMG ..... in that case mine should've been free. Then she added 20% Tip charge from our 25 people for $122.00. *(Most restaurants may add 15 % chg.- never heard of this before) * From my table of 6, the others said their fish and pirogi's were served cold, the salt laden soup, and burned potato pancakes. I feel we got ripped-off @ $27.95 a person for our pitiful meals... Mine should've $5.00 for that burnt potato pancake & I probably would've refused to pay that too. This is NOT a Yacht Club but Patti charges Yacht Club Prices. She was so rude to both myself and our Escort ...never responding when we were trying to find out how much we owed. We ALL thought we were going to be able to use their regular menu and pay our own bills individually. * When I got there I was planning on ordering the Walleye light. Could NOT!
