Cost of boat rental in koh chang.

The prices for yacht charters in Koh Chang are closely tied to the weather and sailing conditions throughout the year. They tend to be at their lowest in May, corresponding to the low season, and reach their peak in December when demand is high and sailing conditions are optimal.

Koh Chang boat rentals

Koh Chang is located approximately 350kms southeast of Bangkok in Trat province, which lies on the Thai Cambodian border. There are two car ferry services that operate between the island and the mainland from 7:00am to 7:00pm departing every 45 minutes or so for the 30-minute voyage.

Koh Chang Yacht charter base is located in the sleepy little fishing village of Salakphet on the southeast side of the island, far away from the hustle and bustle of the main tourist areas. Although most of the taxi drivers know of Salakphet bay they may be reluctant to make the journey as the chance of a return fare is virtually none existent making the one-way trip rather expensive.

From Bangkok to Koh Chang by airplane

The safest and quickest way to get to Koh Chang boat base is to fly to Trat (TDX) airport. Flights are only available from Bangkok and operated by Bangkok Airways. There are three flights per day and it’ll take only one hour to get the ferry terminal from Bangkok. You may find flight schedule on the Bangkok Airways website.

From the Trat airport, you can book a taxi that will take you directly to the yacht charter base. We recommend booking taxi in advance. Trat airport is only 20 minutes away from the Koh Chang ferry. It will take you about 30 minutes by ferry long lines may add a few hours to your arrival/departure time depending on how busy it is. From the ferry terminal on Koh Chang, it's another 30 minutes to the boat charter base.

Transfer by mini bus

We can help you to arrange a transfer from Bangkok airport to the yacht charter base in Koh Chang.

  • From Bangkok - 6-7 hours drive depending on stops and the ferry.
  • From Pattaya - 5-6 hours drive depending on stops and the ferry.
  • From Trat -  2 hours drive depending on stops and the ferry.

If we arrange transfers for you, mini- van driver will meet you at the airport/hotel and will board on ferry with you. Once you reach the island, he will take you directly the base in Salakphet Bay or you can make a detour for provisioning.

If you’d like to arrange transfer by yourself, please make sure that your taxi driver will board on ferry with you and don’t drop you at the terminal or upon arrival at the mainland where ferry stops, which is quite far from the yacht charter base.

Provisioning of the boat

Provisioning your boat with food and drinks is an important consideration before you set sail. Remember that it's cheap in Thailand to eat onshore in restaurants and it will save you time for preparation and cleaning up the boat, while give more time to enjoy your sailing vacation. Both Thai food and western foods are cheap in restaurants and you'll be surprised by the variety offered on the islands while you sail.

If this is your first sailing vacation in Gulf of Thailand, re- member that this is tropics and boat galley has very limited space, refrigerators are small and storage lockers have limited space, so you should be smart with how you’ll handle all your groceries.

For the sailing vacation on a charter boat we recommend a menu that shares many of the same base ingredients, but delivers very different tasting meals. That way you minimize the number of items you have to take on board. Keep the menu simple.

Weather and conditions

The sailing season in Koh Chang Archipelago starts mid-October just before the northeast monsoon and ends mid-April, which marks the change and the beginning of the southwest monsoon. With the winds to the north some of the very best anchorages are in the lee and provide comfort and tranquility.

  • October to January the northeast winds prevail, with strongest in the beginning of the season from November to mid-January ranging from 15 to 25knots and the climate is cooler with daytime temperatures ranging from 27C in the day to 20C during the night.
  • January to May onwards the temperature rises and the winds become less predictable ranging from 10 to 15 knots. However, there are very few days no wind at all and in the latter part of the season has a westerly sea breeze that offers a beam reach for the full length of the archipelago. Late in the season the winds may shift a little more south opening up some great anchorages for overnight.

Throughout the season the sailing conditions are good, the weather is warm with low chance of rain. Even if it rains it usually early in the morning before the day starts.

Koh Chang and Gulf of Thailand is a great place for your first sailing vacation.  Sailing conditions are not challenging that your crew will be hanging on white-knuckled to the rail, but adequate to allow you to sit back and indulge the view.

Ko Chang's driest months are form November to March but it might rain a little during those times which keeps the waterfalls flowing and the tropical landscape green and lush. On average, the warmest month is April and the coolest and driest month is January.

About Koh Chang

Why is Koh Chang a good sailing destination?

Koh Chang, the ‘Elephant Island’, has long enchanted travelers with its mystique. But as mariners, we find its call especially compelling. At Yachting.Rent, we’ve sailed many a sea and coast, and time and again, Koh Chang stands out. Here’s our take on why this gem in the Gulf of Thailand is a sailor’s dream.

Diverse Coastal Beauty: Few places can boast of Koh Chang’s variety. From hidden coves to sun-drenched beaches, and from mangrove-fringed channels to dramatic cliffs, Koh Chang offers a kaleidoscope of coastal landscapes, ensuring a new visual treat at every turn of the helm.

Ideal Sailing Waters: The waters around Koh Chang are a sailor’s delight. They offer a perfect balance of calm stretches for leisurely sailing and challenging passages for those seeking a thrill. Moreover, the predictable weather patterns of the Gulf make navigation and anchorage planning simpler and safer.

Rich Marine Ecosystem: Dive beneath the waves, and Koh Chang reveals a vibrant underwater world. Colorful coral reefs, a myriad of tropical fish species, and the occasional sight of larger marine creatures such as rays or dolphins make sailing here a continuously unfolding marine documentary.

Cultural Enrichment: Koh Chang is more than just its natural beauty. The island is imbued with rich Thai culture. Traditional fishing villages dot its coast, and local festivities, often linked to the sea, offer a delightful immersion into the region’s heritage and customs.

Gastronomic Delights: Thai cuisine needs no introduction, and Koh Chang, with its abundance of fresh seafood, elevates this culinary tradition. As sailors, there’s no greater pleasure than dropping anchor and heading ashore for a meal that tantalizes the taste buds with local flavors.

Easily Accessible, Yet Secluded: Despite its increasing popularity, Koh Chang has retained pockets of untouched beauty, giving sailors the joy of discovery. And yet, it remains easily accessible, with well-equipped marinas and services that cater to the nautical community.

At Yachting.Rent, we believe that a great sailing destination is one that offers a harmony of nature, adventure, culture, and convenience. Koh Chang delivers on all these counts, wrapping them in the gentle embrace of its turquoise waters and verdant landscapes. For those in pursuit of a sailing experience that resonates with soulful connections and memories etched in the sands of time, Koh Chang awaits. Join us in celebrating this nautical paradise, where every tide tells a tale and every sunset sings a song.

What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Koh Chang

At Yachting.Rent, we know that choosing the right vessel can make all the difference in your sailing adventure. In Koh Chang, one of Thailand’s most scenic destinations, the choice between a sailing boat and a catamaran largely depends on your personal preferences, group size, and the type of experience you’re seeking.

If you’re looking for a traditional sailing experience with a touch of romanticism, a sailing boat might be the perfect choice. These boats offer a close-to-the-sea feeling, ideal for exploring the various hidden coves around Koh Chang. Their design enables easy navigation through narrower passages, making it an exciting option for those with a taste for adventure.

On the other hand, catamarans offer a different but equally fulfilling sailing experience. Known for their stability and spaciousness, catamarans are an excellent option for larger groups or families. Their dual-hull design ensures a smooth journey, reducing seasickness. Moreover, catamarans often come with larger deck spaces and interior cabins, perfect for relaxing and socializing.

Both types of vessels come equipped with all the necessary amenities to ensure a comfortable journey. Our dedicated crew at Yachting.Rent is always ready to provide top-notch service and share valuable local knowledge to enhance your Koh Chang sailing experience.

Whether it’s the charm and agility of a sailing boat or the comfort and stability of a catamaran, Yachting.Rent will ensure your sailing trip around Koh Chang will be an unforgettable one. Choose your vessel and set sail for a unique adventure!

Koh Chang, is also known as ‘Elephant Island’, because the headland is shaped like an elephant. It’s the third largest island in Thailand, located in Trat Province, around 300 km east of Bangkok.

Koh Chang is becoming an increasingly popular destination to charter a yacht, where you can sail all day around the 50+ islands of the Mu Ko Chang National park and moor off a sleepy deserted island at night.

A Tropical Destination less Travelled, just Waiting to be Discovered

Koh Chang is the second largest island in the Kingdom of Thailand and largest in the 40-plus Mu Ko Chang Marine Park. The archipelago is located in the north eastern corner of the Gulf of Thailand and can claim a wide variety of landscapes. Original rainforest, beautiful beaches, spectacular mountains, crashing waterfalls and colourful coral reefs are all within reach on a sailing holiday charter, as is an abundance of marine life on and in the water.

Getting to Koh Chang

Experiencing Koh Chang Archipelago by Charter Boat

The archipelago's main island Koh Chang lies a short ferry ride from mainland Thailand. The nearest airport is at Trat, which has daily flights from Bangkok. Then it's a short bus or taxi ride to the dock and a 30-minute ride on a modern vehicle ferry. Once on the island, you need to get to the chanter base at the small fishing village of Salakpet. Taxis may be hard to come by and it is best to organise transfers when making your boat booking.

Once in Salakpet the appeal of Koh Chang is immediately apparent and a wonderful voyage of discovery awaits. The truth about Koh Chang is that there are so many islands of different shapes and sizes, all with sailing holiday attractions, that deciding which way to travel is the hardest part. Most seven-day itineraries include the islands of  Koh Rang, Koh Mak and at the turnaround point of Koh Kut (aka Koh Kood), Each has its own appeal, and along the way a myriad of islets beckon for a stop to lunch and swim.

Sailing Conditions in the Gulf of Thailand

The boat charter season in the Koh Chang islands runs October to April, which with Koh Samui’s alternate season makes sailing in the Gulf of Thailand a year-round activity.

Around Koh Chang the season aligns with the northeast monsoon, and the anchorages facing south are perfect for overnighting. Winds of up to 25 knots can be expected, especially early in the season. From January they tend to ease and become more variable, but there are always good sailing conditions in warm temperatures are comfortable seas.

Late in the season as the northeast monsoon weakens the winds can turn southerly, opening up further options for anchoring in comfort.

A catamaran charter out of Koh Chang is to visit the authentic Thailand. While on the Andaman Sea off the west coast you will encounter tourist traps like James Bond Island and Phi Phi Island, and still see large numbers of tourists in Ao Nang and Koh Lanta, you won't largely find such issues in the Koh Chang archipelago. OK, Bang Bao Bay on Ko Chang has gone too far in that direction but the rest of the islands aren't like that...

What you will fid is a mix of islands that have tourism as an income but focus on their traditional economies such as rubber, fishing and agriculture. Beautiful beaches like White Sand Beach and Lonely Beach are a definite draw here, with their under-developed economy yet quietness giving you a real sense of sense of authenticity. If you can handle the heat, bring your walking boots - a hike up the mountainous interiors of Koh Kut and Koh Chang will be well rewarded! Equally if beaches are your thing, then across the Koh Chang archipelago from the main island to Koh Wai, Koh Rang and Koh Mak will leave you utterly spoiled for choice.

Not all the islands have cars, and a battery scooter is often the best way to get around. That said, not all the islands have mains electricity so a bicycle or your luxury yacht / tender will often be the best way to explore the coastline and villages in comfort. Speedboat and ferry is the best way for those without yachts to get about between the islands, but you will of course have your charter yacht and tender to get from A-B on your Thailand yacht charter.

Snorkeling and diving are a must here. The marine park locally has loads of dive spots and there are companies that can arrange a day diving over one reef or another, some just off the beautiful beaches that abound here, and others off rocky coasts. These aren't as exclusive as Similan Island or Surin Island off the east coast of Thailand, but are far easier to get to and less busy with other divers.

If there is any drawback to a Koh Chang catamaran charter, it is that yachts aren't catered for very well. Though undoubtedly a draw for the adventurous, those who want to enjoy beach bars and entertainment their entire stay may find Phang Nga Bay more comfortable!

Crewed Catamaran Charters from Ko Chang

You don't need to worry about being an experienced sailor or even sailing the boat out of Koh Chang with Borrow a Boat! A Koh Chang crewed catamaran charter on a motor yacht or sailing catamaran can mean you do as much or as little physically sailing the luxury yacht as you like on your Ko Chang yacht charter holiday.

A skippered yacht charter or will mean that the skipper will be aboard with their own cabin to attend to all your needs. A crewed yacht charter or gulet charter will involve one or two crew on the charter boat who will cook, sail and make suggestions as to your best destinations on your sailing itinerary. With their local knowledge, even if you're an experienced sailor you can enjoy a perfect yacht charter holiday.

One of the advantages of a crewed yacht charter holiday is that you can go longer distances from the yacht charter base. Koh Samui to the SE and Ko Samet to the N, both on the Gulf of Thailand are within reach for example, with the crew handling everything as you go.

As to you? You can just enjoy the breezes and views on your luxury yacht charter, or if you fancy learning a bit about sailing, help the skipper or crew to get the boat from A-B.

A Koh Chang crewed catamaran charter will cost a little more (typically $150 a day for a skipper and $100 per crew member) and it's the done thing to thank them with a tip at the end of the week.

A bareboat yacht charter holiday will mean that you can take the charter yacht out on your own. Generally for vessels up to 20 metres LOA on a sailing license such as an RYA Day Skipper or ASA 104 Bareboat certificate, you will have total responsibility for the yacht.

You will need to think about your itinerary, victualling, possible secondary ports should a marina be full, as well as issues like weather and mooring fees.

On a bareboat catamaran charter you will be asked to pay for insurance in the form of a security deposit to the chartercompany on departure or through buying charter insurance before you leave the yacht charter base.

Types of Catamarans Available For Rent Or Charter In Koh Chang Island:

When searching a geographical area on Borrow A Boat you can filter by the below charter yacht types. There is also the option to further filter your searches by price, the number of guests, cabins or bathrooms, what year the catamaran was launched, the boat length and the boat manufacturer.

Types of Catamarans Available:

Sailing Catamarans: Luxury catamarans are stable and spacious type of sailing boat, with quick sailing performance, and and have been gaining in popularity in recent years. Better for larger groups, they have lots of room for water toys, and are big enough for a little privacy. A catamaran charter luxury yacht is easy and comfortable for novices not used to heeling and are loved by families due to their extra space when compared to a monohull sailing yacht. Typically far more luxurious than a sailboat, the larger catamarans have en suite toilets and showers in the cabin as well as ample entertaining space in the saloon and on deck.

Power Catamarans: These motor yacht catamarans are relatively new but have also been gaining in popularity as the two hulls keep the motor boat more stable when compared to a monohull. The wider beam of these motor boats also mean more deck space and as they don't have sails or a mast, they have a lot more space on deck than a sailing catamaran boat rental or monohull. For a luxury catamaran charter, consider taking a crewed catamaran charter sailingvacation with an experienced skipper.

Catamaran Sailing Itineraries From Koh Chang

On a shorter Gulf of Thailand yacht charter out of Koh Chang Island you can explore the Koh Chang Archipelago, while on a longer crewed catamaran sailing holiday you can go further south to the Koh Samui archipelago too. Let's look at a 7 and 14 day sailing holiday on your charter boat:

7 days - Ko Chang Archipelago: As a first day's sail, head down the west coast of Ko Chang and moor off the coast, perhaps enjoying a meal at Bang Bao Pier. Koh Mak will be your next day's sail, just a short hop south past some smaller islands worth a pause such as Koh Kam on the way to the desert island of Koh Mak. Take a couple of days to explore Koh Kut, seeing the very different east and west coasts. Head to Koh Rang the next day - an almost uninhabited island that is well worth a trip. Up the east coast of Ko Chang for another evening in Salak Kok before handover on the final day.

14 days - Ko Samui and the Gulf of Thailand: With long legs south and then north, this sailing. As a first day, head down to the almost uninhabited island of Koh Rang where you get your first evening away from the real world. The next leg will take at least 24 hours - a night/day sail the 200 or so NM down to the Koh Samui archipelago. Likely making landfall at Koh Phang Nga, you then visit Ko Samui and the smaller islands for a week. It is worth pointing out that there are no marinas at all locally so again, local knowledge from the skipper will make life easier. After exploring the archipelago, head to the mainland town of Dom Sak and then Chumphon, and then Prachuap Khiri Khan for an evening ahead of visiting Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park with its excellent diving and caves. A final long leg, this time NE back to Ko Chang for handover.

**Do You Need A Licence To Charter A Catamaran In Ko Chang?

If you are on a skippered catamaran charter you do not need a license to sail out of Koh Chang, you can just turn up at the marina and go.

You do need a license if you are on a bareboat catamaran charter and in some countries such as Thailand a RYA Day Skipper or ICC may not be enough for boats over 45 feet in length, you will need to check with the charter agent but here are some examples of typical sailing qualifications that will allow you to charter in most countries:

International Certificate of Competence: This is issued on request by your European sailing authority and you should automatically qualify with certain national sailing qualifications.

RYA Qualifications: If you have the following qualifications you will typically be able to take a bareboat charter out of Rhodes (but it is worth checking as per above), these include Day Skipper (sail or motor endorsement), Coastal Skipperor Yachtmaster.

American Sailing Association (ASA): The ASA 104 Bareboat certificate is commonly accepted but also check as per above

US Sailing : The International Proficiency Certificate is widely accepted and The Bareboat Cruising Certificate is also accepted in many cases.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should i consider when hiring a catamaran.

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

Do you have to pay a deposit when hiring a Catamaran in Koh Chang?

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the catamaran hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual chartercompanies themselves.

In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company and they can typically send someone from the charter base

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the catamaran before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool in the evenings.

If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. If you choose to have a skipper on board your catamaran you won't require licences.

Koh Chang Yacht Charters

rent-motor-yacht-koh-chang

The island is spread over 166 square miles with a population density of a meager 30–odd people and makes for an undisturbed holiday retreat every city dweller around the world craves. The place also holds historical significance as the spot of 1941’s Battle of Ko Chang between the Thais and the French during WWII. Today, it serves as a great starting point for a sail along with the gulf’s most picturesque destinations in Ko Mak, Ko Samet, Koh Kong, and Koh Rong as the neighboring islets.

More adventurous long-haul sailors can also make their way across Cambodia by stopping over at the coastal city of Krong Preah Sihanouk. Other Thai mainland options for yacht charter include the coastal beaches of Chanthaburi, Rayong, and the city of Pattaya.

Yacht Charter in the Koh Chang Islands has become one of the more quietly popular Koh Chang activities over the last few years as the sailing community has discovered this wonderful area on the eastern side of the Gulf of Thailand.

The sailing grounds extend out among the 52 inhabited and mostly uninhabited islands which make up the archipelago. There are superb peaceful anchorages along the way and it is all charted and mapped.

You can explore the tiny islands with just a couple of resorts like Koh Wai , Koh Klum and Koh Laoya , the Marine Park area at Koh Rang or lay up at the delightful Koh Ngam .

Those aside, you can also head shore at Koh Mak , sleepy and laid back as ever and of course, Koh Kood, only a bit smaller than Koh Chang but with nothing like the same development.

The yacht charter normally commences from Koh Chang out of Salak Phet bay in the south east corner of the island.

Also, what kind of license would I need to provide ??? ICC ok ??

Are there any extra costs associated with the charter, such as National park fees, mooring fees, marina fees etc…….

Also I have never been to Koh Chang, what is the archipelago like for sailing ?? would you have an itinerary for a 2 week charter that you would suggest which I can look at.

Looking forward to hearing back from you

The mystical blend of nature and thriving life in Thailand is felt most potently on the island of Koh Chang. This ‘Elephant Island’ is among the largest in the Gulf of Thailand, its inland a dense national park while the coast is dotted with package-tour resorts. As it has only surfaced as a tourist hotspot in the past two decades, lush foliage and decadent coral reefs reign over the party scene.

Mu Ko Chang National Park preserves jungle trails and a diverse biosphere that extends into the sea. Embark on hikes that will take you to the mangrove forests of Ban Salak Phet and Ban Salak Kok; others unveil tiered waterfalls such as Klong Plu and Thanmayom. The former is an extended feature of White Sand Beach and Kai Bae Beach, both venues for nighttime revelries. The ivory respite that is Lonely Beach also transforms after nightfall into a chaotic hub, often hosting full and half-moon parties.

Koh Chang’s eye-catching charms can also be attributed to its fishing villages. Floating piers and colorful wooden structures dominate the waterfront; the ships in port are also a rainbow palette. Concentrated around the southern edge, these communities serve up fresh seafood and friendly banter. Bang Bao Bay best captures the local community’s humble but full-hearted lifestyle. For those who seek more luxurious experiences, know that Koh Chang offers a roster of modern resorts and independent guest houses.

Koh Chang’s climate falls neatly into the ‘tropical’ classification; it is hot all year round. Average highs rarely drop below 30℃ and winter months retain mild weather as well, with minimum average temperatures of 20℃. Note that rainy season runs from May to October, where April sees an increase in showers and typhoons can still hit in November. The best time to visit would be between December and March when temperatures are cooler and weather runs dry.

EXOTIC sailing DESTINATIONS in Thailand

Island spirit charter - koh chang base.

Koh Chang Yacht Charter in Thailand

Our Island Spirit Yacht Charter base on Koh Chang is situated in the fishing village of Ao Salakphet on the island's south-east side, aptly named the "end of the road." The base office is located at the Salakphet Seafood & Resort, with boats launched from the floating pier just past the restaurant. While Ao Salakphet offers limited services beyond accommodation, it provides a unique and serene setting.

For a more immersive experience, arrive a day or two before your sailing holiday to unwind and explore Koh Chang. Staying on the south-west side allows you to experience the hustle of this rapidly developing island before transitioning to the tranquility of your luxury yacht charter holiday in the more serene southern islands.

Alternatively, stay at the relaxing Salakphet Seafood & Resort or opt for a more local experience in the fishing village. There are charming places such as The Mangrove Hideaway for a Western boutique experience or the Thai-style Baan Chan Lay. Kayak through mangroves or ride a bike to the temple along flat village roads. This corner of Koh Chang is relatively isolated for now, offering a peaceful escape.

Just a few kilometers away is The Spa Koh Chang, featuring a nice pool, excellent spa, alternative food choices, yoga, and cleansing programs—an ideal stop after an indulgent holiday as a sailor.

Salakphet Seafood & Resort extends a warm welcome to all our guests, providing showers and toilets onshore for your convenience.

The Island Spirit Base offers moorings for overnight stays, and we can refill your water tanks if you stop by. Notify us of your arrival, head for a mooring ball, and our crew will bring you to the dock when ready. Water for your tanks is also available at Koh Rang Marine Park Headquarters.

Getting to the Base on Koh Chang

Koh Chang, located approximately 350 km southeast of Bangkok in Trat province on the Thai – Cambodian border, is easily accessible. Sailing and Yacht Charter on Koh Chang

Hiring a Catamaran or Yacht on Koh Chang

Sailing around Koh Chang is increasingly popular.  Every year there’s a noticeable increase in the number of yachts visiting the island and I often get emails from people asking about chartering a boat for a few days.  The archipelago is gradually getting a name for itself as a great place to go sailing if you want to avoid sharing an overnight mooring with dozens of other yachts.

Unlike the south of Thailand, you’ll be able to sail all day and just see a handful of other yachts.  And at night, moor off a sleepy deserted island.  Yet you’re never more than a short sail from a resort on Koh Chang, Koh Wai or Koh Mak or Koh Kood or a Marine National Park base on Koh Rang or Koh Bai Daeng

Gulf Charters have been chartering yachts out of their base at Salakphet Seafood Restaurant pier, Salakphet, in the far southeast of the island, for many years and mainly focus on catamarans and premium monohulls.   They have also put together a useful guide to sailing in this corner of Thailand.  This is free to download – even if you aren’t sailing with them.  Get the Sailing Guide PDF here

Also in Salakphet, many private owners moor at Island View pier or the small marina near the head of the bay.  Dieter, the owner of Island View, first arrived on Koh Chang, by yacht over 25 years ago and knows pretty much everything there is to know about sailing in this area of Thailand.

For more information about what to expect if you charter a boat from Koh Chang, check out from SEA Yachting’s January – February 2020 edition.  It’s written by who has 40 years sailing experience and now spends the year on Koh Chang.

You can also contact him through his new Fb page:   This page is designed to promote sailing in the Koh Chang Archipelago.  You’ll find promotions from yacht and boat charter companies, plus tips and information from the community.

Skippered Day Trip

* As of October 2022, Mandala Sailing has ceased operations * Steve from Mandala Sailing is a long time visitor to Koh Chang.  During the high season he runs skippered day trips to the islands south of Koh Chang for families or small groups. The maximum group size is 6 people. Figure on just 6,000 Baht for a full day out on his yacht. ( Why so cheap?  Because usual rates are 12,000 Baht / day but due to covid-19 Steve has reduced rates to make sailing accessible to more people. )  More photos and information here .

Skippered Catamaran Charter

Unless you are specifically planning a sailing holiday, you’re probably more interested on a day out on a boat with a captain and crew doing the work rather than a week or two out on the ocean.  As of mid-2018, Koh Chang SUP (Stand Up Paddleboard) Station also has an lovely Athena 38 catamaran for charter.  It is only available for skippered trips and can take up to 8 passengers.

Full Day Yacht Cruise

From 09:00 – 16:00.  A full day aboard this stylish catamaran.  You’ll cruise south along the west coast of Koh Chang before heading down to Koh Wai, which is a great spot for snorkelling .  You can also go ashore and laze on the beach.  Then you’ll sail north to Koh Laoya, a beautiful private island at the mouth of Salakphet Bay in the south east of Koh Chang.  It’s famous for it’s picturesque beach.  Then it’s time to head along the south coast of Koh Chang and back to base in the Kong Prao estuary.

Price: 22,000 Baht

Half Day Yacht Cruise

From 09.00-12.00 or 13.00-16.00.  You’ll head out to the islands of Koh Yuak and Koh Suwan , located off the west coast of Koh Chang.  From here you can enjoy the views of Koh Chang, do some good snorkeling, relax on a quiet beach or explore the small islands by SUP.

Price 15,000 Baht

Sunset Cruise

From 17:00 – 18:30.  Enjoy a relaxed evening onboard sailing off Klong Prao beach as the sun goes down. A nice way to relax with friends or family or celebrate a special occasion before heading out to dinner.

Price 9,000 Baht

Prices include:

– Transfer to/from from your hotel on White Sand Beach, Klong Prao Beach or Kai Bae Beach.  Other locations are possible for an additional charge  – Meals. Lunch – for the full day trip, Drinks, Snacks & Fruit – All equipment  – Dinghy, SUP boards, Snorkeling equipment, Towels

Enjoy the island, have some fresh seafood for dinner on any of the island's resorts, then get back on board to spend your overnight charter in Koh Mak's sheltered bay. Continue your Koh Mak adventures the next day before heading your way back to Koh Chang after lunch.

Koh Chang yacht charter for a week

A week-long liveaboard in Koh Chang allows you to explore more of the archipelago and stay longer on the islands.

Day 1: Koh Wai

This small island is the perfect epitome of a laid-back and rustic tropical island. There are no shops, no restaurants, no bars, and no roads. There are a small number of resorts here, but the island is pretty rustic and laid back, perfect for those who want peace and serenity, with no crowds and parties' sightings. Swim, snorkel, bike through the rubber plantations, and enjoy a day on a simple island.

Day 2: Koh Rang

There are 12 islands in Koh Rang and packed with white sandy beaches everywhere you turn. Choose your very own secluded beach and swim, snorkel, or dive. Koh Rang is one of the top dive spots in the archipelago.

Day 3 and 4: Koh Kood

This island is found to the southern tip and close to nearby Cambodia. It has beautiful white sand beaches, jungles, waterfalls, crystal clear waters perfect for snorkeling, and slow-paced life. Explore several waterfalls, beaches, and the villages on this island, most especially the gypsy village of Ao Salat, with their houses built on slits over the water.

Day 5 and 6: Koh Mak

Koh Maak has a lively community of sports and outdoor enthusiasts, so if you live an active lifestyle, you will enjoy two days exploring the island. Aside from the beautiful beaches, crystal clear waters, and eco-trails, you can also enjoy many island activities. You can learn and do yoga, Muay Thai, kayak, bike along with the eco trials, dive, snorkel, learn to cook Thai dishes, and a few fitness gyms are also found here. Rent a scooter or bicycle to tour the island on your own, exploring plantations and small villages, and exploring the island life of Koh Maak.

Day 7: Ao Bang Bao

Before heading back to Koh Chang, visit Ao Bang Bao, a fishing village with clear waters and coral reefs ideal for snorkeling. Head back to Koh Chang before sunset.

Wedding yacht charter in Koh Chang

A wedding venue in Thailand may be more prevalent in Phuket or Bangkok, Chiang Mai, or even Koh Samui, but very few have chosen Koh Chang as their dreams' wedding destination. In Koh Chang, a wedding yacht charter will make a unique location for a tropical destination with fewer crowds and less developed islands. Because of this, the possibility of a private beach in a secluded island makes for the most romantic and exciting wedding venue. Hop onboard your private luxury yacht where you can cruise for a short 20 minutes to arrive at your very own private island for your beautiful wedding ceremony.
