Refitting a Tired Saloon Table

  • By Roger Hughes
  • Updated: June 26, 2017

refits

The original saloon table on my Down East 45 schooner was a single heavy sheet of 3⁄4-inch-thick laminated plywood, 27 inches wide by 57 inches long. It was supported on two substantial aluminum pedestals locking into large, round collars screwed to the floor and table.

There were two annoying problems with this structure: It was permanently mounted on the port side of the saloon, so people sitting on the starboard settee couldn’t reach the table. It was also difficult to squeeze in and out of one end because the chart table bulkhead was in the way. It was a very large but also impractical table, so I decided to build myself a more versatile one that could seat more than just three people.

My new design would have a narrow, fixed center section, with hinged leaves on either side that swing up to reach either or both of the settees. This is hardly a unique concept, so why didn’t the original builders do it this way? To make it the right height for the settees, the table needed to be 27 inches high, but this meant the new leaves could not be more than 27 inches or they would catch on the floor when they were down. With both leaves open, this left a 13-inch space in the middle, which determined the width of the fixed section. The table would be 43 inches long to allow access on all sides.

refits

I started with a 4-by-8-foot sheet of oak plywood from Lowe’s. The folks at the store cut this large, heavy sheet to my three panel sizes on their circular saw, which saved me a lot of time and enabled me to fit the pieces into my vehicle. I wanted rounded corners on all the pieces, so I traced around a tin lid to give me a radius, then cut the corners with a fine scrolling blade fitted in my jigsaw.

I decided to laminate the tabletops with a high-pressure melamine laminate, similar to Formica, because it is both hard and scratch-resistant. I found exactly what I was looking for on the Wilsonart website. It is a realistic-looking teak-grained laminate called Nepal Teak in a high-gloss finish that looks just like real varnished teak. I special-ordered a 4-by-8-foot sheet from Lowe’s. It is 3⁄64 inch thick, and I cut it to the approximate size of each table section using metal cutting shears, leaving about a 1⁄2-inch overhang on all sides. Then I glued them on the plywood using, Weldwood’s original contact cement, which is more liquid than the gel variety. I spread it on the plywood and laminate surfaces with a 6-inch roller, then waited for the glue to become tacky. When joining large surfaces of laminate with contact cement, you have to get it right on the first try because the cement bonds on contact and there is no wiggle room. I placed the laminate on my workbench with the glue side up, then laid two thin wooden battens on each end. I put the plywood on top, glue side down. The wood strips kept the two pieces apart while I positioned the plywood accurately above the laminate. It was then a simple matter to slide the battens out and press the plywood to the laminate. I then placed the board on some paper on the house floor and walked all over it in my deck shoes. This applied much more than the 75 pounds of pressure called for in the gluing instructions and firmly pressed the pieces together.

After leaving the three boards overnight for the glue to harden, I carefully trimmed the laminate flush with the edges of the boards, using a router with a vertical cutting bit and roller-bearing guide. This produced a sharp, straight edge to which I intended to fit teak trim all the way around.

refits

I had some 1⁄2-inch-thick teak slats left over from a forward-cabin rebuild that were just right to make the straight-edge trim for the panels. Of course, this was much too thick to bend around the corners, so I used my jigsaw to cut rounded trim from bits of solid teak I had saved from previous projects. All the trim had to be drilled and counterbored, then screwed and glued to the edges of the three boards. Then all the holes — 75 total — had to be plugged and sanded.

I decided to make fixed fiddles on the center section because the things that invariably get placed there are liable to slide off when the boat rocks — even in a marina. I cut strips to length and beveled and rounded the tops, then shaped both ends in a graceful swan’s-neck curve to join the corner trim. I left the corners open to enable the table to be wiped, and to add a bit of decorative accent.

An unusual stumbling block I didn’t anticipate was keeping track of all the pieces of trim that had been shaped to match the individual edges and corners. I made 12 corner pieces, four edging strips for fiddles and eight other edging trims. All were slightly different, because this table was nothing if not “handcrafted.”

I hinged the table’s leaves using six stainless-steel sliding pull-apart hinges — three on each leaf. These allow the leaves to be easily detached from the center section when necessary, such as to access the floorboards.

refits

The mainmast compression post on my schooner is a 4-inch square post passing through the saloon to the keelson, and it offered a perfect support for one end of the table’s center section. I used a 4-inch brass-plated butt hinge to support that end of the table, screwing one half of the hinge to the compression post with a teak block spacer and the other to the underside of the table. The spacer is important because it enables the center section of the table to hinge up and hang with a strop to a deck beam when I need access to the floorboards. This attachment method also allows me to remove the table completely by simply knocking the hinge pin out, separating the two halves of the hinge.

To support the other end of the table, I shaped a leg out of plywood. I attached it at the top with a short piano hinge that allows the leg to fold flat to the underside of the center section of the table whenever it’s lifted to get to the floorboards. I secured the bottom of the leg with two pins that drop into flanged bushings I set in the floor. I made the pins by screwing 1⁄4-inch-diameter stainless wood screws into the bottom of the support, then hack-sawing the heads off and rounding them with a file. To support the table’s leaves, I bought two attractive turned-wood table legs, grandly termed “early American table legs,” from Lowe’s. I fastened the top of each leg to the center of the leaf edge’s underside, using a small brass hinge, so when not in use, each leg folds to the inside of the leaf, where it is held by a plastic C-clip. I screwed 1⁄4-inch-diameter pins in the bottom of each leg, which drop into bronze flange bushings I sunk into the floor. This simple yet secure support for the table leaves is much stronger than center-section supports like those I have had on other boats, which nearly always allow the leaves to sag. I also bought two brass barrel-bolt latches, which I screwed to each leaf. The bolts drop into flanged bushings set in the floor and stop the leaves from swinging about in the folded-down position when the boat heels.

I stained the plywood on the underside of the panels and the table legs with teak stain, which, when rubbed with a rag, made the wood look amazingly like the shade of real teak. I bought a quart of the stain, called 120 Teak Natural and made by Zar, from a local hardware store. When all the woodwork was complete, I varnished it with two coats of Epifanes high-gloss wood varnish. The result is that it’s difficult to distinguish between the real teak trim and the laminate.

When both leaves are extended, the new table is more than twice the size of the old one and looks positively baronial. More important, it is much more functional because it easily seats six and allows access all around, yet when the leaves are down it is smaller than the original.

Roger Hughes is nearing the completion of a six-year project restoring his Down East 45, Britannia. For more on the restoration, visit his website www.schooner-britannia.com.

Amazing DIY Saloon Table Does It ALL!

Every Sunday we post Weekly Episodes on our YouTube channel, Lahakai Sailing, where we take you on an epic journey into the water and around the world!

SEASON 2 // EPISODE 51

Description, creative solutions for our boat refit take our saloon table to the next level.

This week in our sailboat restoration project, we are building our custom DIY saloon table in our salvage sailboat. And believe us when we say – does it all!

Our table has 4 fuctions; First, it starts with the ordinary and is a 4 person dinette table with an L shapped bench. Then, the table can open up and double in size. This way it turns into a large U shapped dining area that utilizes the port side bench area. To complete the U seating area, we isntalled a pull out extention on the bench to connect the port and starboard side seating area.

But that's not all! The table can lower down and fit into the bench in order to create a compact guest bed on the starboard side. Let's say you want some more room – the table can then open up and connect to the prot side seating area in order to create the ultimate full sized bed when you want to stretch all the way out!

Our boat interior design is taking form as our main cabin saloon starts looking like a home. And with these special touches, we are maximizing the space in this small 34" sailboat. When you enter, the sensation is that you are walking into a much larger yatch. And with the wraparound windows we created in our rebuild superstructure, the main cabin wide open ain airy.

We still have some adjusting to do to finalize our work but the ideas are solid and we are really happy with the results so far. The best part is that we were able to create the components ourselves and did not need to purchase any expensive components.

The real test will be once we get in the water though. Part of finalizing the furniture will also be making sure that everything is secure and snug. There is nothing worse than the creaking of wood or the potential hazard of something coming apart while you are at sea.

Check out all the creative solutions we came up with and let us know what you think!

Your support matters!

Subscribe to our channel, like this video and ring that bell on YouTube, it's a totally free way to keep the journey alive!

Super yacht for sale for less than a Sydney house

A sleek super yacht is on the market for a sum less than a typical house in some Sydney suburbs.

Named YOLO, the cutting-edge craft is on the books of Ray White, for an asking price of $3.99 million.

The yacht YOLO, on the market for just under $4 million. Photo: Ray White

Instead of putting down roots in Rose Bay (median house price $4.65 million), Vaucluse ($8,062,500) or Manly ($4.4 million), you could spend your days bobbing in luxury in the four-cabin yacht.

The price hope is on par with Bondi, which has a Domain median house price of $3,966,941.

The listing explains the price has been reduced, making YOLO the “best value superyacht in Australian waters”.

The luxury cabin includes a cinema room and lounges. Photo: Ray White Marine

The yacht is a 2007-built, 34-metre Leopard craft, which also has crew quarters.

“YOLO is an entertainers dream, with a huge aft cockpit dining and lounging shaded by dual umbrellas, raised saloon bar and main deck media room for a full on-water cinematic experience,” the listing explains.

Life on the high seas in YOLO. Photo: Ray White Marine

A shaded deck is deep enough for a dining table, under cover, with plush seating for soaking up the changing vista.

, we've poured over every book on sailing that we can find. We're a bit confused by the terms "salon" and "saloon" when referring to the area below . We've seen them both used, and at first I thought that "saloon" was just "salon" being misspelled. Now I've seen it often enough that I have to believe that the writers intend to spell it that way.

I was directed to the thread regarding pushpits vs pullpits, so I realize that we can call it whatever we darn well please; but I am curious to know what others think.

Opinions, anyone? Thanks!

copy, the term is most often used.

Encyclopedia has this to say about the two words:

"Many boaters seem to find the word rather lacking the elegance and significance they associate with their . Therefore, they refer to their as a , a fancy French term for hall or a room filled with perfumed finery.Hairdressers, beauticians, and couturiers have salons; sailors have a . defines a this way: “In a cargo and smaller passenger vessels, the main , or that serving as a dining-room, assembly room, etc.” describes a saloon as a “public room for first-class or for all passengers on ship.”The only dissonant note is sounded by , which allows the use of both and but then confesses that saloon is “specifically, the main social cabin of a passenger ship.” Nevertheless, whereas most sailors use the word , most powerboaters seem to prefer It’s possible that some boaters use the word because they don’t want their to be associated with saloons where strong alcoholic drinks are served and rough indulge in fisticuffs. But a better choice than either or would be What could be simpler or more correct?"

Tao's encyclopdia quote was enlightening... I've only heard being used in the context of hairdressers, nails, beauty etc...

Pullpit is at the pointy end... pushpit is at the blunt end.

As for saloon or salon, looks like the "saloons" have it. Again, given the size of our boat, maybe just "under there" would suffice.

Thanks for everyone's input on this!

Riviera to Unveil 6800 Sport Yacht at Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show

  • By Sam White

Riviera 6800 Sport Yacht

Australian yacht builder Riviera will introduce its latest model to the North American yachting audience during the 2024 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. The 6800 Sport Yacht Platinum Edition will be part of Riviera’s 11-model showcase.

Following three years of development, the Riviera design group—in collaboration with superyacht designer Luca Vallebona—have created this series’ flagship. It features well-defined areas for guest enjoyment, from the foredeck to the protected aft deck and salon. The stern has an electro-hydraulic, articulating swim platform that morphs into steps which can be lowered below the water or raised above to match the level of dock or quay, with aft wing doors on either side as well. Snorkeling, diving, paddleboarding and fishing enthusiasts will find stowage for watersports gear in the tender garage, and there’s also a tender cradle and electric winch system.

Riviera 6800 Sport Yacht

The aft deck is the entertaining and dining center, with an extended hardtop providing all-weather protection. A guest lounge extends across the width of the transom; forward to port is an L-shaped lounge dining area with folding teak table. This area also has an entertainer’s galley with a grill and hotplate, exhaust fan, two drawer fridges, an ice maker, stainless-steel sink with a mixer and solid-surface benchtop. An LED TV folds down from the hardtop.

Riviera 6800 Sport Yacht

The galley window lowers with the push of a button to connect the salon and aft deck. The U-shaped galley is outfitted with all the requisite meal-prep appliances and stowage for extended cruising. Forward of the galley to port is a U-shaped lounge with matching ottomans, along with a handcrafted solid-wood table that folds out from the lounge for dining inside. The salon also has a very practical starboard door for foredeck access to tend to mooring lines when short-handed cruising.

Riviera 6800 Sport Yacht

The 6800 Platinum Edition has  four staterooms and three heads belowdecks, plus a utility/crew cabin. The full-beam master has a walkaround king-size berth while the VIP forward has a queen berth. The portside guest stateroom has twin berths that slide together for a single berth  while the starboard guest stateroom adds two adult-sized single berths overlapping at 90 degrees. This can also be laid out as a media room to entertain young children. Finally, there are crew quarters which can also be used for laundry or utility as needed.

Riviera 6800 Sport Yacht

Access to the full-height engine room is via a watertight door from the utility cabin aft of the master stateroom, or through a lift-up door on the transom. Standard power is twin 1,000 hp Volvo Penta D13 IPS 1350s.

The Musings of a Hopeless Wanderer

Engaging in the eternal search for the meaning of life...or a good time.

Tackling moscow by train and boat.

Our first full day in Moscow started fairly late since we were still catching up on sleep.  Around 1, we finally were able to get our act together and get out the door.

We stopped by a cafe to get some breakfast and headed over to the Red Square.  Since the festival is going on, we had to go through metal detectors.  Once we cleared security, we reached the State Historical Museum which provided an entrance to the Red Square.

yacht saloon tables

We walked the length of the Red Square, passing by the Kazan cathedral.

yacht saloon tables

Under normal conditions, the Red Square is a large walking area with the State Historical Museum on one end and St. Basil's on the other end.  On the sides is the Kremlin wall on one side and then the GUM shopping mall and the Kazan cathedral on the other side.  Presently, the walking area has been considerably narrowed and the fesitval grounds occupying a large space between the Kremlin and the mall.

We even asked a stranger to take our picture!

yacht saloon tables

After walking around the Red Square, we had to leave to meet up with our Metro Tour.

Moscow has famously pretty metro stations so metro tours are quite popular.  We booked a relatively inexpensive tour through a tour group which met outside of the Red Square.

On our way, we passed by the Kremlin gardens and the tomb to the unknown soldier and the eternal flame.

We soon met up with our group which, fortunately, was only 5 people.  Our guide told us that we were going to visit 8 stations during the 1.5 hour tour.

Honestly, a lot of the stations blended in to me so I won't be able to give you a detailed description of all of them.  However, I did learn that there are 222 metro stations and the trains come every 2-3 minutes reliably.  For that reason, Moscow > DC.

One of the first metro stations we visited had bronze statues all over of various depictions.  Many of the statues had superstitions tied to them.  For example, for a statue of the dog, it's held that if you rub the nose of the dog, you'll have good luck.  Consequently, most of the statue is tarnished - except for the nose.  I joked to Tomas that they probably rotate the "good luck" portion of the statue to ensure the entire statue gets polished.

However, I do remember some of the stations.

Novoslobodskaya is a station adorned with stained glass on the walls.

yacht saloon tables

There was also Belarusskaya, which paid tribute to Belarus.

yacht saloon tables

Another station which name I cannot remember but had pretty mosaics in the ceilings.

yacht saloon tables

My favorite station was Komsomolskaya.  It's the busiest station and a hub for other connecting trains.  It was built during Statlin times and he wanted the station to embody beauty to set a good first impression to Russia.

I'd seen pictures of it beforehand since it's the most famous but it's so much more impressive in person.

Look at these ceilings!

yacht saloon tables

Overall it was a very interesting tour.  Not sure of any other city which could offer a metro tour.  DC certainly can't...

After the tour, we headed back of the hotel to rest for a bit.  We had purchased tickets to a tour hour boat down the Moscow river.  The tickets were good for any time on any day and the boats left every 20min.  We decided to knock the tour out that day and headed over to the pier.

We arrived at the pier and saw a boat by the company we had purchased from boarding.  We approached and they shook their head and said it wasn't the right boat.

So we waited for another boat.

Another boat came along by the same company we had purchased from so weapproached them.  Again - we were told it wasn't the right boat and the boat we were looking for was coming.

A third boat came along which was NOT by the company we had purchased from.  By this point, it had been longer than 20min waiting and I was starting to suspect that the correct boat was actually one of the ones which turned us away.   We approached the 3rd boat to ask if they knew which boat we should be on.  However, when we approached,  they waved us aboard without scanning our tickets.

So, we boarded the 3rd boat....which was definitely not ours.

We settled into an upper deck, open air table to take in the views.

We passed by pretty buildings.

The somewhat impressive cathedral of Christ the Savior.

After about hour on the cruise, Tomas remarked that it had been about an hour so we should be turning around soon.  I reminded him that we actually had no idea how long this cruise was or where we would be dropped off.  Since we were on the wrong boat.

Fortunately, it did turn around and took us back to the pier.

For dinner, we decided to go to this burger place, Black Star Burger, which our guide told us about.  Tomas really liked his - I thought mine was OK.  It was a decent size patty with a mountain of Cole slaw on top.  We've realized that apparently Russians dislike getting their hands dirty while eating so some restaurants will give out gloves to use.  This particular restaurant gave out black gloves.

Tomas modeling our dinner.

Since little mum has been asking about pictures which show my feet, I assume she wanted to see my new shoes.  I recently bought Allbirds which are suppose to be super comfortable walking shoes which you wear without socks and can be washed.  I didn't wear them too extensively beforehand, so that was probably my first error.  I also didn't bring another pair of good walking shoes,  which was likely my second error.  The Allbirds were great the first two days without socks.  Midway through the third day, my right foot was quite unhappy. Left foot was a trooper. So, now I have a bandaid on the heel of my right foot and wear socks.

Featuring elegance and ease of transportation as its distinctive characteristics, Iseo superyacht tender , a 27 foot runabout, is destined to become a must-have for those who love cruising on both lakes and the sea, and, most importantly, design enthusiasts. Due to its ease of manoeuvrability and size, Iseo yacht tender is also ideal as a tender for large yachts. Innovative and elegant, it can also guarantee comfort in bad weather conditions.
