Motor yacht charter vs sailing yacht charters in Sardinia

Choosing between a crewed motor yacht and a sailing yacht for your Sardinia adventure depends on your preferences, budget, and the experience you’re seeking.

Motor yachts offer several advantages that appeal to many travellers. They provide greater speed and agility, allowing you to cover more distance along Sardinia’s coastline in less time. With their luxurious amenities, spacious interiors, and onboard chefs, motor yachts offer unparalleled comfort and indulgence. Their stability in choppy waters and ease of handling make them suitable for guests who prioritize a smooth sailing experience or have limited sailing experience.

On the other hand, sailing yachts offer a more authentic and serene sailing experience. With their reliance on wind power rather than engines, sailing yachts provide a quieter and more intimate atmosphere, perfect for relaxation and enjoying the natural beauty of Sardinia’s coastline. They evoke a sense of nostalgia and romance with their classic designs and billowing sails, appealing to travelers seeking an authentic maritime adventure. Additionally, eco-conscious travellers often prefer sailing vessels due to their lower environmental impact and reliance on renewable energy.

Ultimately, choosing a motor yacht or a sailing yacht for your Sardinia adventure depends on your preferences and desired level of comfort. Both options offer their own unique advantages and can provide an unforgettable journey along the breathtaking coastline of Sardinia.

Best Yachts for Charter in Sardinia

Motor yachts for charter in sardinia, sailing yachts for charter in sardinia, sardinia yacht charter faqs, where is sardinia.

Sardinia is an island in the Tyrrhenian Sea, a part of the Mediterranean Sea, southwest of the Italian Peninsula and just south of the French island of Corsica. It is an autonomous region of Italy and boasts over 1,850 kilometers (1,150 miles) of coastline, featuring stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and dramatic cliffs. Sardinia is surrounded by smaller islands and archipelagos, such as the Maddalena Archipelago to the northeast, offering additional exploration and discovery opportunities on your own private yacht charter. These islands often have secluded beaches, hidden caves, and charming villages to explore.

Sardinia’s coastline boasts miles of superlative beaches and secret grottos only accessible by boat. Porto Cervo is at the region’s main center, home to Costa Smeralda. This area has become increasingly desirable for luxury yacht charters because of its remote location and exclusive atmosphere. South of Porto Cervo, you will find forested mountains, medieval villages, and stunning seas. Another recommended site is La Maddalena National Park, a marine reserve that offers opportunities for secluded anchorages and overnight stays. Spotted with seven main islands and many islets, La Maddalena offers crystal-clear waters for an afternoon snorkel and access to the beautiful pink sand beach named Pink of Budelli. Sardinia’s coastal cuisine differs from inland; the seafood base and pasta dishes pay homage to the sea and further contribute to the laidback yet luxurious atmosphere of the island.

When is the best time to go on a Sardinia yacht charter?

The best time to hop on a yacht and explore Sardinia is usually in the summer, from June to September. During this time, the weather is warm and sunny, perfect for soaking up the sun and diving into the crystal-clear waters. Remember that summer is popular with yacht charter guests and tourists, so planning ahead and booking early is advisable. Spring (April to May) and autumn (October to November) are great options for Charter guests who prefer fewer crowds. You’ll still get lovely weather and plenty of chances to enjoy the island’s beauty without the hustle and bustle of peak season. So, whether you’re aiming for exciting summer adventures or a more relaxed experience, there’s a perfect time for a Sardinia yacht adventure to fit your preferences.

Can I visit other destinations on a Sardinia yacht charter?

Yes, absolutely! One of the great advantages of chartering a yacht in Sardinia is the opportunity to explore other destinations in the Mediterranean. Sardinia’s strategic location in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea makes it an excellent starting point for cruising to nearby islands, coastal towns, and other popular destinations.

Just a short sail away from northern Sardinia, Corsica offers stunning landscapes, picturesque towns, and pristine beaches. Explore the historic port city of Bonifacio, relax on the beautiful beaches of Porto-Vecchio, or hike in the rugged mountains of the interior.

The Amalfi Coast

Sail along the west coast of Italy to visit the breathtaking Amalfi Coast , known for its dramatic cliffs, colorful villages, and Mediterranean charm. Explore the picturesque towns of Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello, and enjoy the stunning views of the coastline from the deck of your yacht.

The Aeolian Islands

Located off the northern coast of Sicily, the Aeolian Islands are a volcanic archipelago known for their natural beauty and unique landscapes. Visit the island of Stromboli to see its active volcano, explore the picturesque town of Lipari, or relax on the secluded beaches of Panarea and Salina.

The French Riviera

Cruise along the French Riviera to visit glamorous destinations such as Saint-Tropez, Cannes, and Monaco . Enjoy world-class shopping, dining, and nightlife, and soak up the sun on the famous beaches of the Côte d’Azur.

Head south from Sardinia to explore the island of Sicily , known for its rich history, cultural heritage, and stunning coastline. Visit historic cities such as Palermo, Syracuse, and Taormina, and sample the delicious Sicilian cuisine.

Sardinia luxury yacht charter

Sardinia’s scalloped bays, shimmering sands and dramatic coastline have long been the playground of screen starlets, royalty, first families and the yachting elite. With some of the most exclusive harbours, hotels and restaurants in the western Mediterranean, a luxury yacht charter around the Italian island of Sardinia seamlessly combines sun-soaked glamour with timeless elegance and natural beauty. A Tyrrhenian Sea yacht charter around this island can happily balance partying in hotspots like Porto Cervo on the Costa Smeralda with an escape to secluded islands and jaw-dropping marine parks in places such as the Maddalena archipelago.

Sardinia yacht season and weather

Sardinia is hot and dry from May to October with the island enjoying an average of 300 days of sunshine a year. Peak charter months are July and August, though June is also an excellent time to charter. August is particularly busy as most Italians take their holidays during this month.

Most rain falls between October and February, giving much of Sardinia a lush and verdant character. Visitors may well experience balmy summer days in March and April, though evenings will be cool during this time of year. The prevailing wind is north westerly, which can be particularly significant on the Strait of Bonifacio at the north of the island.

Sardinia superyacht charter itineraries

Historic Cagliari crowns Sardinia’s southern edge, and a litter of pretty coves and tiny villages then await. With vineyards inland and towns steeped in history, it is a region rich in cultural and gastronomic offerings. Yachts up to 55 metres LOA can drop anchor at Marina di Cagliari.

To the north, the superyacht haven of Porto Cervo is the central hub for the yachting elite that descend on Sardinia’s glittering Costa Smeralda each summer. Home to some of Europe’s most expensive residences and exclusive resorts, including the iconic Cala di Volpe hotel, Porto Cervo pulsates during the summer season and its bars and restaurants promise a great night ashore.

The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda is based in Porto Cervo and organises a packed yacht racing season throughout the summer. Highlights of the Mediterranean cruising calendar in Sardinia include the Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta, the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta, the Maxi Rolex Cup and Rolex Swan Cup – all lively events for sailing enthusiasts in Porto Cervo to get involved with. Yachts up to 120 metres can berth at the IGY marina in Port Cervo.

South of Porto Cervo, the resort village of Porto Rotondo’s turquoise waters, pristine beaches and charming piazzas will prove irresistible, and the port here has 25 berths for megayachts. Cruise 20 nautical miles and dock at Marina di Olbia (for yachts up to 80 metres) to discover the city’s café-lined squares. Further south explore the caves near Cala Luna, where the peaks of Gennargentu National Park provide a dramatic backdrop and the snorkelling is excellent. Nearby Cala Goloritzé is another natural wonder.

From the northern coast of the main island cruise about 10 nautical miles offshore toward the spectacular archipelago of La Maddalena. While away long, languid sunny days around Caprera, Spargi, Santo Stefano, Santa Maria, Budelli and Razzoli, and discover some of Sardinia’s best beaches and the island’s breathtaking lagoons. On Isola Maddalena, Cala Gavetta marina can host yachts up to 60 metres LOA, as can the marina of the Hotel Excelsior. On Capera, Porto Palma can accommodate yachts up to 40 metres.

Some luxury yacht charters will combine the magic of Sardinia with French-held Corsica – the islands lie in a north to south run, with Corsica sitting off Sardinia’s northerly tip.

On Corsica , visit the historic capital of Porto-Vecchio, discover the UNESCO wonders of the Lavezzi islands and marvel at the houses perched atop the windswept bluffs in Bonifacio before cruising south to the majestic La Maddelena archipelago.

Sardinia by superyacht

Getting to sardinia.

Olbia, Alghero and Cagliari airports handle commercial and private jets.

Many visiting charters will arrive from the west coast of Italy. Corsica and Sardinia run north to south.

Subito i primi acquisti.

Sailing: Yacht Club members dominate Cagliari-Monaco podium

Cagliari-Monaco

As the first yachts sailed into Monegasque waters, the Yacht Club de Monaco celebrated a solid one-two-three on the podium of the inaugural Cagliari-Monaco offshore race.

Departing the ancient Sardinian capital of Cagliari on Monday 24 th April, the various teams and vessels competing in the first ever Cagliari-Monaco offshore race were treated to four “idyllic” days of sailing as they headed 360 nautical miles up the coastlines of two of the Mediterranean’s most beautiful islands towards the Principality.

An “idyllic” offshore course

First passing Sardinia and then Corsica, it was only a matter of time before the race winner got out in front. Adamo Spinsante was Skipper aboard Yacht Club de Monaco member Adalberto Miani’s Botta Dritta . The vessel would eventually enter Monegasque waters and cross the finish line in the early hours of the morning on Thursday 27 th April with a time of two days, 16 hours, 50 minutes and 46 seconds.

Close behind was another Yacht Club de Monaco member: Roberto Tamburelli on  Furibonda . Behind him was Carlo Falcone on  Mariella , who was also representing the club. It was an excellent result for the prestigious establishment, which is celebrating its 70 th anniversary this year.

“It’s fantastic to see Botta Dritta from Yacht Club de Monaco win this race,” said YCM General Secretary Bernard d’Alessandri. “Especially as two other club members completed the podium.”

More to come later this year

The race was organised by the Lega Navale Italiana de Cagliari, the Yacht Club Porto Rotondo and the Yacht Club de Monaco under the aegis of the Italian Sailing Federation and as part of the Cagliari-Montecarlo Sea Week .

The Yacht Club de Monaco has a packed schedule of events and races this year, but the next time its offshore racers will be out again is between 22nd and 27 th August for the 18 th Palermo-Monaco race.
