Crewed Catamaran Charters

Over the last 10 years or so, both sailing and power catamarans have pretty much displaced single-hull vessels in the BVI and Caribbean charter industry. This has happened for well-founded reasons:

Space and Comfort

Generally speaking, catamarans are more spacious and can accommodate more guests in comfort than traditional sailboats. In most designs, the two pontoons house the cabins and bathrooms (heads). The salon, dining and kitchen areas are located in the slightly raised mid-section between the pontoons. There are many variations on this theme, such as extra cabins in the mid-section, galley up or galley down and other interesting design twists depending on the manufacturer and designer. There is always an outside rear deck area that can be used for dining as well as just hanging out. The netted forward bow area is ideal for sunbathing and on the larger cats, there is usually a nice upper deck where the captain runs the boat from and can also be used by guests for sunbathing.

Catamarans tend to be very stable, with very little “heeling over” – this is due to the twin hull design. Traditional single-hull sailboats tend to heel while “under-way” when the wind is blowing from any direction except from behind you. This “heeling” in which the vessel is literally moving along bent over sideways, makes many guests uncomfortable and can cause sea-sickness if you’re not used to it. Additionally, moving around the boat while traveling at an angle and with the deck slanting one way or the other, can be a challenge. Catamarans on the other hand, remain upright and do not heel even in strong breezes. However, all vessels are susceptible to the fore and aft “pitching” motion. No escaping Mother Nature and her wave patterns..!! However, the BVI waters are very protected and do not usually have uncomfortably high waves

The design of catamarans provides the owners and operators of charter vessels to cater for larger groups with the same number of crew members. Whereas the average number of guests used to be 6, now with the advent of catamarans the average number has grown to 8. From a client perspective, with larger groups and with everyone contributing (Yes, I know this is not always the case) the cost per person goes down.

Ease of Operation and Maneuverability

For the captain and crew, sailing a catamaran is easy and gives you or your captain a lots of time to put sails up and down, and is very tolerant when the sails are not set exactly right and very easy to approach a mooring or dockage. The downside is that catamarans do not usually “point” well into the wind. Well, you can always turn the engines on..!!

Overall, catamarans have taken over the industry. Not really a bad thing. Some traditionalists miss the single hull vessels. Personally I do not. Give me a nice cat any day.

Lagoon 62ft 2019

Yacht description.

You will relish your time onboard Bagherra, a 2017 Lagoon 620 Essence catamaran. It is spacious and modern and offers four queen size cabins, all with immaculate ensuite facilities. The salon has loads of natural light from the wraparound windows, plus there is excellent headroom, which adds to the light and airy feel. The comfortable leather sofa can also be used as a formal dining option with the high low table.

Outside there are three spots with an abundance of space so everyone can have their own privacy should they want it. The cockpit offers a shaded dining option as well as comfy seating and a lounging pad. “Upstairs”, the flybridge offers a further space to relax and then forward there are the trampolines for the sun worshipers. There are three crew members with a dedicated chef so, even with a full yacht, your every need is met.

Our personal opinion

Why book Bagherra – ENJOYING THE WATER – Bagheera has an extensive selection of water toys and has a 16ft dinghy with a 70hp outboard so it is perfect for skiing or wakeboarding. There is also a kiddie’s water slide and sea scooters – oh, and they also have a huge floating island if you want less excitement! Add to this, a fabulous well established crew, super tasty gourmet food and masses of space and you will fall in love with Bagheera, as we have done.

Rendezvous diving

If your crewed charter yacht does not offer onboard diving then fear not, rendezvous diving can be arranged.

So what is Rendezvous diving?

A local dive company will pick you up direct from your charter yacht at a pre-determined location and take you for a one- or two-tank dive to experience the BVI below the water. This is an excellent option if only a couple of guests wish to dive or can work equally as well if all your group are interested. If your charter yacht offers minimal onboard diving, then rendezvous diving can also work if you wanted to add a few more dives during your charter.

Rendezvous diving is at additional cost, payable locally. The dive company provides all gear.

This is Where You Start Your BVI Catamaran Charter

Most charters start from Tortola , the largest and most populated island in the British Virgin Islands. With distances between anchorages being under 20 NM , you can easily be in Jost Van Dyke, Peter Island, or Virgin Gorda Island before the end of the day.

You will also find some catamaran charters based in the USVI, but be aware that many catamarans are presented as ‘British Virgin Islands/US Virgin Islands’ , but many don’t have a BVI license “yet” . After signing, you might be surprised that the boat can only do USVI.

Top Tips for Luxury BVI Catamaran Charter

• If you plan your next BVI yacht charter with a catamaran, there are direct flights to Beef Island airport or Ferry from St Thomas.
• Most travelers prefer to fly to St Thomas  and take a water taxi (we assist and help arrange). Why – there is a multitude of reasons starting with the price of flights – which are generally cheaper to USVI including a water taxi and ending with BVI airport having 2.5/5 reviews with most reviewers complaining about lack of AC and immigration procedures (sometimes too relaxed, other times unpleasantly meticulous). Island Time is a feature, not a bug.

• Start your charter at Nanny Cay Marina on Tortola Island—the central point of any BVI charter. This well-equipped marina has a nice restaurant and the famous beach bar Peg Legs (have a Dark&Stormy) in the British Virgin Islands.

• One of the most successful catamaran charters in the British Virgin Islands right now is OHANA , an 80-foot Sunreef with a fully equipped dive center and professional dive instructors on staff. Where to Go on a BVI Catamaran Charter

Most BVI catamaran charters depart from Nanny Cay , island hopping along Treasure Island, Norman Island, Peter Island, and Cooper Island on their way to Virgin Gorda . Depending on the weather, Anegada is often included. This catamaran charter route will cover the key attractions of the British Virgin Islands.

When on the way back, return via the Nort side of Tortola , hitting Cane Garden Bay and continuing to Jost Van Dyke – coming back through Sopers Hole .

If you finish your catamaran charter on Tortola, you can depart at the Hodges Creek marina and catch your flight from Beef I sland Airport .

If you are approaching from USVI – crossing Jost Van Dyke or Tortola, you must pass customs first. However, the bigger crewed catamarans often move to Exumas for the summer.

Virgin Gorda is the third largest island in the British Virgin Islands, with just over 4,000 people.

It’s known for its beautiful white sands, the rock pools known as The Baths National Park , and world-class luxury resorts and clubs for BVI yacht charters.

There are also some great hiking trails on Virgin Gorda with sweeping views of the island’s coastline-making it an ideal destination for visitors with  bareboat catamarans .

After soaking up the sunshine and saltwater activities in Virgin Gorda, consider visiting the Copper Mine National Park . These 19th-century abandoned ruins are found between Copper Mine Bay and Crooks Bay on the island’s southeastern point. The structures were built by Cornish miners and housed around 130 families before the mine was closed in 1862.

Jost Van Dyke

Jost Van Dyke, one of the smallest leeward islands, is renowned for its exceptional scuba diving , thanks to its vibrant marine life, making it a top destination for snorkeling and water sports enthusiasts.

But what really makes Jost Van Dyke stand out as a charter destination is its super great vibe and positive energy around White Bay and Great Harbour.

Don’t miss a visit to the Great Harbour Bars of Foxy’s and Ivan’s for a drink, the peaceful energy of Diamond Cay , and the crashing waves of Bubbly Pool .

Swim from your boat to the famous Soggy Dollar bar for a painkiller. Hang out in the hammock in Hendo’s Hideout, get a roti or seafood, and relax on the beach. Weekends are more party-like, with day trips from USVI filling the beach bars.

Tortola Island

Tortola is the largest island in the British Virgin Islands. It’s home to some of the best diving and snorkeling in the Caribbean- especially in Cane Garden Bay . Tortola Island also has many historical sites and points of interest.

Don’t miss a visit to Smuggler’s Cove , a perfect shallow reef ideal for scuba beginners and untouched by civilization.

To get a taste of authentic Caribbean living from your BVI charter vacation, venture into Torrola’s Road Town .

This tiny island is arguably one of the most pristine places in the world, and it makes sense why it has become synonymous with white sand beaches.

Loblolly Beach , Bay Beach , and Cow Wreck Beach are not to be missed in BVI yacht charters.

Anegada Sea is also home to the largest barrier coral reef in the Caribbean . You’ll find turtles, nurse sharks, stingrays, and even manta rays!

The island has a modest road network and little traffic, and it is best discovered on a boat. However, those who choose to explore on land will find easy hiking trails that offer a unique view of the topography.

WHICH CHARTER YACHT IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

Sailing catamarans are the most popular choice. They are fun for sailing with a stable and flat platform for more comfort. They are ideal for those new to sailing/chartering, families with children and couples groups. The double hulls give an spacious amount of living space, they often have equal cabins with ensuite bathrooms and it is easy to walk around while sailing.

Monohull sailing yachts offer a better sailing experience, which is perfect for the traditional sailor. The yacht will heel while sailing which gives more thrill and is more exiting when you can feel the true power of the wind. Monohulls are perfect for honeymoons or  anniversaries as they often offer a more affordable price, and a larger master cabin.

POWER YACHTS

Power Yachts are chosen when guests desire more glamour and some greater mobility in and around the islands. In general the rates are higher than a similar size catamaran and in the lower price range there are not that many available options. Power Yachts often have a large Master cabin. If you are planning a busy itinerary with a focus on exploring the many great destinations, you should strongly consider a Motor Yacht. ☛ Luxury Yachts While the British Virgin Islands have traditionally been known as sailing destinations, we have seen a growing demand for luxury motor yachts among high-end clients. As the marinas compete to accommodate more and larger vessels, their numbers increase.  There are now over 200 large   (100+ feet meters) motor yachts operating in the BVI  in the high season. The motor yachts offer more privacy and prestige, more water toys, and comfort as they can accommodate a larger number of guests and crew. (Note that jet skis are not allowed in the BVI). Type of Crew ☛ Crewed Charters Immerse yourself in luxury and choose a crewed charter where everything is taken care of, and you won’t need to think about a thing. A Crewed Charter usually includes at least a Captain and a Chef but can also cover a stewardess, masseuses, dive instructors, personal trainers, and yoga instructors. The boat is provisioned according to guest wishes and preferences. Since all the work is handled by the crew, the guests can really have a relaxed, laid-back time. ☛ Captain-Only Charters Captain-only charters are a good middle ground between the crewed charters and the bareboat charters. It’s very much like car rental. You do the paperwork and rent the boat. The local experience of the crew should not be underestimated. A captain will know secret spots and is able to quickly analyze your preferences and types of vacation you wish (or need). ☛ Bareboat Charters Bareboat charter is the budget-friendly option for qualified sailors. Originally intended for people who know the area, the price convenience caused that today, many of the bareboat captains would be better off with a captain-only charter.
