Laissez Faire is one of the early 1979 Valiant 37 Esprit bluewater cruisers designed by legendary Robert Perry and built by the re-known and well-respected Nordic Shipyard in Bellingham, Washington. Purchased new by her current and only owner, this Esprit 37 has had the best of care since her early days on the Chesapeake, and continues to be upgraded by her loving and knowledgeable Sellers.
In a recent book by John Kretschmer, delivery skipper and author he recognized the Alajuela 38 on a very short list of what he called ââ¬Åsailboats for a serious ocean.ââ¬ï¿½ Kretschmer, who reviews boats for Sail Magazine and whose most recent book ââ¬ÅSailing a Serious Oceanââ¬ï¿½ details why the Alajuela and a dozen other bluewater sailboats warrant the attention of any serious sailor who wants to cruise the oceans of the world. Here are the boats Kretschmer suggests: Contessa 32, Pacific Seacraft 34, Pretorien 35, Cape Dory/Robinhood 36, Valiant/Esprit 37 , Prout Snowgoose 37, Alajuela 38, Privelege 39, Freya 39, Passport 40, Caliber 40, Baba 40, Hallberg Rassy 42, Taswell 43, Hylas 44, Norseman 447, Beneteau 456, Outbound 44, Hylas 46, Kaufman 47, Tayana 48, Hylas 49, Amel Maramu 53, and the Sundeer 60/64.
Here's what Kretschmer has to say about it on his Website: " Valiant/Esprit 37 - This is a great looking boat designed by Robert Perry. Perry's designs are well represented in my collection of serious sailboats. Sometimes called the Nordic 37, and later known as the Valiant 39, this hull shape is fast and seaworthy. The size is easily managed by a couple, and is ideal for single-handing. It's a no nonsense passagemaker, well built and very easy on the eyes. It is also a good value. "
This is the "baby-sister" of Bob Perry's Valiant 40 design, and her sailing performance is considered very comparable. With a fin keel, skeg-hung rudder, and fairly flat underbody sections, you can expect lively performance, yet a safe and seakindly motion in all wind and sea conditions. She is well-equipped for coastal and Caribbean cruising, with an updated electrical system, good working electronics, 3 headsails, including a cruising spinnaker with a dousing sock, solid rod rigging, 3 anchors with chain & Nylon rodes, SS Dinghy Davits, Dinghy outboard motor hoist davit, as well as all lines led aft to the cabin with generous sized self-tailing 2-speed winches and sheet stoppers.
The interior is near-Bristol with a traditional layout of an aft quarterberth, U-shaped Galley aft, large convertible settees on each side of the salon, large double-leafed folding bulkhead mounted salon table, head with a separate shower stall, plus a wide V-Berth with plenty of storage.
If you are looking for an extended cruising yacht that will be safe and comfortable anywhere you point her, then look no further! Please call if you have questions and to schedule a personal inspection today. If you snooze, you will lose this fantastic opportunity to purchase a go-anywhere bluewater cruising yacht that will turn heads wherever you go.

- Description
Below deck, the best words that describe the layout are well thought-out and functional, installed with air conditioning throughout. There are more than adequate stowage areas for extended cruising.
Laissez Faire has had continuous upgrades and preventive maintenance by her caring original owners, so when you step below her varnished cabinetry is near-Bristol and her teak and holley sole that was replaced in 2008 is "like-new." No stains, no blemishes, no odors!!!
The cabin was completely renovated in 2003, keeping the integrity of the all teak interior, sanded and varnished to a medium-gloss shine. The renovations included all new cabin and cockpit cushions, a new V berth mattress, all new white Awlgrip ceiling panels, and all countertops/tabletop refinished with Awlgrip paint. In 2008 the cabin sole was completely replaced and varnished to a high-gloss shine. The renovations have brightened the interior while maintaining the traditional look of this upscale sailing vessel.
Descending from the companionway, the very functional U-Shaped Galley is aft to port, next to the removable companionway stairs, and features a 2-Burner Gimbaled Stove with Oven, a top-loading refrigerator with 12V Adler-Barbour Super Cold Machine Refrigeration, Double SS Sinks and plenty of storage above and below the upgraded Countertops.Under and behind the Companionway stairs is the teak engine cover; easily removed to access the clean and well-maintained Westerbeke 30B Diesel engine.
To starboard is a seagoing quarter-berth with a space forward with front-facing navigation station. Further forward to port is an L-shaped settee which can converted to a double berth, opposite is a single berth settee. The cabin table is large enough to seat 6 spaciously and stows away against the bulkhead which opens up that area nicely.
Between the main saloon and the V-berth is the head compartment to port, it has a separate shower stall with running pressurized hot and cold water. There is a shower curtain that snaps to the shower frame to keep water contained in the shower. The shower has a spacious platform seat. The V-berth forms the master cabin and is spacious with lots of drawers a generously sized hanging locker, and fiddled shelves on both port and starboard sides.
Like all the Valiant boats, this 1979 Valiant Esprit 37 is solidly built. The hull uses a hand layup with 1.5 ounce fiberglass mat between layers of 24 ounce weave. Above the waterline, lining the interior of the hull, is a half-inch layer of closed-cell foam which provides acoustic and thermal insulation. This thermal barrier has the advantage of reducing condensation build up on the inside of the hull.
The deck is fiberglass with balsa coring and is solidly attached to the hull with a through-bolt join. All through-deck fittings are bolted onto aluminum backing plates. The rigging is all high-performance rod rigging and has been regularly inspected and updated.
The Valiant Esprit 37 sports a graceful sheer and canoe stern with an aggressive tumblehome. The overhangs are relatively small making for a decent speed-endowing LWL. Below the waterline is a cruising fin keel and skeg-hung rudder. The underside of the hull was designed flatter than other sailing vessels which contributes to the Valiant Esprit 37 being more nimble through the tacks.
On deck the cabin trunk has a sleek profile. The decks and cockpit surfaces are all installed with heavy duty non-skid material. The mast is manageable at 55ââ¬â¢ and has a sloop rig (with option of converting to a cutter rig), with a high aspect mainsail on a small boom, a design heavily influenced by IOR ocean racers. All control lines are routed back to the safety and comfort of the cockpit.
The hull was repainted with Awlgrip Flag Blue paint in 2007 and carries a high-luster shine, complemented by the ââ¬Ëracing-redââ¬â¢ cove and boot stripes. The exterior canvas, all navy Sunbrella, has been rebuilt or replaced. In 2016 new eisinglass panels were built with covers that protect the eisinglass when not under sail. The cockpit has full eisinglass enclosed panels with changeable mosquito netting panels.
