POST-IRMA PROJECTS

We have been very busy stabilizing our management fleet by boarding those boats we can to drain water out of places it should never be., maria was nothing to irma but there was a lot of rain. since then we joke that when the forecast calls for showers just translate that to ‘flooding rains imminent’. it has been very wet. our upright boats have had more attention with extensive cleaning and ‘de glassing’, boarding up and de-humidifying., fortunately, our clients are more than happy to say, ‘just get on with it and do what you can’. we feel sorry for those lonely boats who are stuck awaiting appraisals deep in the storage areas..

Wild Daisy - Swan 53

This beautiful swan 53,  wild daisy , was holed in the boatyard.  we made her seaworthy with some temporary repairs to the hull so that she could be splashed and sail on her own bottom to puerto rico where she will be repaired to her former glory..

The owner has decided to have all the decks, joinery, and final fibreglass work done in Puerto Rico by Swan repair specialist Marty Muench from Osmotech Annapolis.  Marty has been repairing Swans since 1986.  Osmotech is known as a premier repair facility in the Mid-Atlantic region for Nautor’s Swan, Halberg Rassy and other high end yacht manufacturers.

Marty, who has ties to Puerto Rico and is a frequent visitor, will be sending a crew down from the US to complete the work in Puerto Rico.  His close relationship with Swan, team of experts, and the relative ease (and cost) of shipping materials and spares to PR in comparison to the BVI made it an easy choice for the owner.

We love this classic Swan and have had her in our BVI yacht management fleet for many years.  We look forward to welcoming her back after her full repair.

Occam's Razor

In preparing occam's razor for launching, we had to remove a mast from another boat that was lying across her bow.  .

Enter our new 2-tonne crane for the job.  Small enough to get up close and personal in the small space between the two boats.

Shaima - Hylas 63

Meet the luckiest, 'unlucky' boat in tortola..

Shaima is well on her way to launching with very little damage after falling off her stands during 'round one' of Category 6 Irma . She was bumped and bruised but has suffered very little damage compared to those around her.  Somehow the mast stayed up, there is hardly a scratch on deck and she's getting a fresh bottom job before launching and heading to Grenada - that was her original plan but she was struck by lightning at anch or in great Harbour, Peter Island.

That strike took out engine, genset, bowthtusters, Davies, electronics, battery chargers, fridges...the list is long. She was towed to Nanny Cay and tied up inside the T of A-dock.

At 63 feet she was way too big to weather a hurricane at the dock. Not liking the look of Irma we managed to haul on Saturday September 2nd, ahead of the frantic rush. Once hauled, without a hurricane cradle, she looked so vulnerable!

I arrived in BVI on my inaugural trip from Florida on July 13th 2017, three days later I was hit by lightning while at anchor. This forced me to stay for extensive electronic repairs in BVI instead of sailing south to Grenada as planned. I hired Island Yacht Management to manage my boat while away from BVI.

As hurricane Irma approached Richard did all the timely moves to haul out and protect my boat as the hurricane approached. He even took my dinghy out of the water and with his trailer put it in a highly protected place.

Both survived with minimum damage! Thanks Richard and Island Yacht Management!

My dream boat survived and I will continue sailing around the World and making my dreams come true!

The Hunt for Red October

An island with a famous chocolate factory becomes Moscow's newest hot spot.

In the 230 years since its creation, Moscow’s manmade island of Bolotny has vacillated between the glamorous and the glum, variously housing the British ambassador’s residence, a jumble of warehouses, a posh yacht club, and, most famously, the Red October Chocolate Factory, a fragrant landmark for much of the 20th century. In 2008 Red October moved outside the city; later that year, its cavernous headquarters was colonized by heiress Maria Baibakova’s nonprofit exhibition space, Baibakov Art Projects, which established the island as an art-world hot spot. Baibakova has since moved on, but the city’s young and fashionable continue to arrive in droves to dance, dine, gallery-hop, and take in the stellar views of the Moscow skyline. Here, a few of their favorite haunts.

Rai, a gargoyle-bedecked nightclub, can hold up to 2,500 people—and the line outside can seem just as long thanks to its merciless feis kontrol, the process of screening patrons for attractiveness and wealth. Those who do make it inside will find blasting techno, lasers bouncing off mirrored walls, and mermaids and fire-breathers for entertainment (7.495.364.01.01, raiclub.ru” target=”new”>raiclub.ru). Nearby is Rolling Stone Tattoo & Bar , a club where the feis kontrol is a bit more forgiving and the music substantially more eclectic (7.495.504.09.33, rstattoo.ru ).

Created to educate the next generation of architects and designers, the Strelka Institute opened this past May in what used to be Red October’s candy store and garage. Its one-year master’s program, which kicks off this month, was designed in part by Rem Koolhaas, who will visit bimonthly to teach. Students and nonstudents alike can watch films and listen to lectures in the outdoor amphitheater. The restaurant (pictured), which overlooks the gold onion domes of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, offers fruit-studded bulgur and Thai shrimp soup. The downstairs bar serves high-end cocktails, still a novelty in this vodka-loving town (7.495.771.74.37, strelkainstitute.com ).

PICK A FIGHT

Located up a flight of dusty stairs in one of Red October’s old factory buildings, the October Boxing Club (pictured) boasts a clientele that includes some of Russia’s most famous TV personalities. Every day after work, a steady stream of Merrill Lynch and Deutsche Bank traders shows up to beat the stress out of one another (7.499.995.07.97, bcoctober.com ).

GET AN EYEFUL

Within the walls of Red October (pictured), a number of gallerists are picking up where Baibakova left off. Pobeda Gallery, which helped host this summer’s Biennale for Young Art, shows cutting-edge contemporary photography (7.495.644.03.13, pobeda gallery.com). Mel Space often stages street-art exhibitions in a stark loft (7.499.230.31.09, melspace.ru ). Known for displaying Soviet art from 1920 to 1960, the newly relocated Art Agency Colony is branching out with an exhibit of lush, blurry works by contemporary artist Igor Kormyshev (7.499.788.62.28, no website).
