My Way sets Speed Record in the Islands: 2019

Despite the high winds and big chop, the 50’ Mystic hit 197 mph.

O ver the past many years, Poker Runs America has run official kilo speed records for family boats, center consoles and poker run boats in the past.  The events were staged on the slippery and fast waters of the famous Pamilco River, home of Fountain Powerboats and the legendary Reggie Fountain.

Those records were officially documented by Poker Runs America Magazine and the APRA sanctioning body, which included Sonny Hawkins (also an APBA official) from Tiger Performance; William Beccaro, Attorney at Law; Reggie Fountain and Brian Ross of Snap-On Tools, among other APBA officials.

This year on September 7-9, Poker Runs America was pleased to bring the speed trial concept back, and the original home of the 1000 Islands Poker Run was deemed to be a fitting venue for the trials. (Click here to read about the Poker Run that happened Saturday September 8, 2018)

“We wanted to do something special in the Islands,” explained President of Poker Runs America, Bill Taylor. “We’ve run more than 60 events in the 1000 Islands region over the past 30 years on both the U.S. and Canadian sides without a hiccup, and we wanted to bring a new dimension to the poker run experience. I think we achieved that with this concept: Poker Run Saturday, Race on Sunday.”

Unfortunately, the weekend of the speed trials weather proved to be less than ideal for speed runs.  With high winds and three-foot chop, Poker Runs America had to slightly alter the route and participants weren’t able to go full-throttle, having to back off a little in order for the event to remain safe.

Despite the unseasonably low temperatures and high winds, the weekend was an absolutely resounding success. Thousands of spectators lined the shores to watch the “run what you brung” speed trial event on Sunday as well as the poker run the day before.

my way powerboat

After the first round of competitors attacked the St. Lawrence, a slight break was required.  It was most important to comply with the all of the other traffic on the river and keep all participants safe. The trials were halted until the ferries and other commercial traffic had passed. The crowds on the water were exceptionally high, but thanks to our volunteers and marshal boats, everyone was kept safe.

my way powerboat

Not long after, veterans and poker run hall of fame members Brian and Janet Lundy lined up on the starting grid with their all-new wide body 36’ Doug Wright powered by twin Mercury racing engines.  The husband and wife team are no stranger to shootouts, having participated in the first Poker Runs America shootout held at the Fountain factory in North Carolina. Within seconds this new wide body Doug Wright was on plane, powering into the strong winds, slicing through the waters like a hot carving knife through butter, the Lundy’s were able to achieve a speed of 108.1 MPH.

Over the past years, the crowds that have lined the shores of the 1000 Islands have always strained their neck to catch a glimpse of the Tomlinson’s turbine-powered beast or Gregg Rosen’s turbine race-ready Aqua-Mania.  Walking the docks you could always hear the spectators talking about the turbine powered beasts and the ultimate question: “Who is faster?”  Finally, the crowds were to get an answer this year.

It was time for the main event, as Bill Tomlinson and Ken Kehoe took the 50’ twin-turbine powered Mystic catamaran known as My Way to the start line.

With Kehoe on the throttles and Tomlinson on the wheel they fired up the screaming twin Lycoming T-55 turbine beast, producing a total of 6,000hp. Capable of running in excess of 200mph, Kehoe and Tomlinson are former Lake of the Ozarks Shootout Top Guns, with a speed of 224 mph in 2013. The pair put a final seal on the speed trials with an absolutely staggering run of 197 MPH, setting the first ever speed record in the island and securing their place as the fastest boat in the region.

my way powerboat

“Aquamania unfortunately suffered mechanical issues and were unable to participate in the shootout,” said Taylor. “We were extremely happy to see them participate in the poker run on Saturday , their 52’ turbine powered orange MTI is always a sight to behold on the St. Lawrence.”

Taylor says the speed trials will be recurring, and next year, the invite will be opened to more participants.

“This is going to be an annual event,” explains Taylor. “Next year, everyone is invited to come to the Official 1000 Islands Poker Run and Shootout weekend and stake their own claim of the St. Lawrence challenging the records that were set this year. Start revamping those engines so you can stake your claim of the St. Lawrence on September 6-8, 2019.”

My Way Shatters LOTO Shootout Record with 224 MPH Pass!

Bill Tomlinson did what he said he would do. Not long ago at a Miami Boat Show Bill told us he was going to really set a record at LOTO. A gentleman and a gentlemen racer, Mr Tomlinson is certainly someone who is not unfamiliar with speed and knowing what it takes to get it. Having gone through an armada of different boats, with a variety of engines, rigging and set ups. His latest boat “MY WAY” a 50 foot, 3000 HP, twin turbine Mystic came to be shortly after the 50 foot Outerlimits cat was built.

This new record of 224 MPH in the short mile course of the Lake of the Ozarks shootout really makes a statement by blowing the old record out the water by more than 15 MPH. Many were expecting My Way to breach the previous record, but to do so by such a margin is quite something. The previous receord of 209 MPH was set in 2006 by Dave Callan and John Cosker. Getting to 224 MPH in such a short run in a huge 50 foot boat is not something easily done or attainable for just anyone with the means to do it. It takes a ton of work that requires persistence and determination to set a goal and then realize the success. This is Tomlinson’s 2nd LOTO Top Gun Trophy, as he won his first in 2011, running 208 MPH that time. When asked how fast he thought he boat was capable of going, Tomlinson replied “The boat is probably capable of running 240 MPH.” In the past 20 years the speed of the LOTO Top Gun has nearly doubled from the 1993 finish of 115 MPH.

This year, the LOTO Shoot Out organizers employed a new radar gun setup to more accurately gauge the speeds of the boats. This year many teams’ GPS Speedometer data corroborated the data from the radar guns while in years past there had been discrepancies between the two.

A huge congratulations to Bill, his entire team and to John Cosker of Mystic Powerboats for creating such a capable craft. It looks like we may be in for even more spectacular LOTO shootouts in the future as new boats and teams challenge for the record.

Sailboat vs. Powerboat and Rights of Way.

This happened a few months ago and had a very uneventful ending but I keep thinking about it. I was approaching the entrance to a river with extended jetties on both sides of the entrance channel. The channel was about 100 yards wide and is normally not anything of an issue. If the inbound craft and outbound craft line up and go single file there is plenty of room for everyone. Back to the story. I was in an 18ft I/O and still running fast in open water when I noticed I was going to tie an inbound 35ft sailboat under sail. So, still about a 1/4 mile out, I made sure to keep the power up as I did not want to end up following a really slow sailboat up the channel once he dropped the sail and started his little kicker. I entered the channel at least 100 yards ahead of the sailboat and dropped to my no wake speed of about 5mph. The sailboat entered the channel well and clear behind me. This is where it get interesting. The sailboat did not drop sail and kept on coming at about 7 mph up the channel. In short time he was directly off my port quarter and coming on. I gave way a little to Starboard but had no room to go as the rock jetty was was not all that far away. In due course the sail boat was passing me maybe 10 ft off my port beam. This was my definition of being between the rocks and a hard place! Too close for my comfort! Now, discretion being the better part of valor; I cut all power and just let him go by before anything became any more exciting. (Rule Of Tonnage!) I keep running the rules through my head... On one hand the Sailboat is the Stand-On vessel against a Power boat. On the other hand the Passing vessel is the Give-Way vessel. There is nothing in the rules about a Sailboat passing a Powerboat! Stand-On or Give-Way; You make the call!

Lieutenant Junior Grade

Re: Sailboat vs. Powerboat and Rights of Way. If he gets in front of you he has the Right of Way. Your application of the Rule of Tonnage was wise. The sailboat, with its displacement hull probably has a higher no-wake speed than your planing hull. I'm with Give-Way.

The Overtaking Situation Any vessel overtaking any other vessel must keep out the way of the vessel being overtaken. The former is the give-way vessel and the latter is the stand-on vessel. This rule applies even if the overtaking vessel is propelled by wind , oars, or rubber band paddlewheel. If you are the overtaking vessel, remember that you are the give-way vessel until well past , and safely clear of, the overtaken vessel. Click to expand...
The "Pecking Order" There is a "pecking order" that can be used as a simplified memory aid to determine right of way for vessels of different types. Get very familiar with this list, as it is important to understand it thoroughly. The uppermost vessel on the list has right-of-way (stand-on vessel) over any vessel (give-way vessel) below it on the list: Overtaken vessel (top priority) <---<<< Vessel not under command Vessel restricted in its ability to maneuver <---<<< Vessel constrained by its draft Fishing vessel (commercial fishing or trawling but not trolling) Sailing vessel (engine not on) Power-driven vessel (lowest priority) Click to expand...

Re: Sailboat vs. Powerboat and Rights of Way. I have stood on a busy jetty entrance in north New Jersey. Tide is roaring in or out. Kamakazis both ways at the same time. In heavy fog. ( I am using radar !!!! ) Private boats & commerical fish trawlers. Fog so heavy I could not see a boat 50' away !! At least 1 or 2 top heavy cruisers underpowered, would lose it and bang the rocks or run aground past the jetties on a busy weekend with fog. Coast guard courses NEVER cover jetty conditions in the area a boater will use. If people saw the crap headed actions in THEIR confined waters, they would sell the boat right after the movie & popcorn ended.

Ned L

Re: Sailboat vs. Powerboat and Rights of Way. Really no question here. If the sailboat was overtaking you, you were the stand on vessel and were obligated to hold course & speed, and the sailboat was the give way vessel and was obligated to alter course & or speed. In this situation (sailboat overtaking a powerboat) it makes no difference that he was a sailboat. That's the law. As for his decision to come in under sail, if the wind was favorable he may have had MUCH better control under sail than under auxiliary.

Re: Sailboat vs. Powerboat and Rights of Way. Sometimes you have to ignore the no wake zone when you are dealing with inltets, strong currents, and jettys. Just do what you have to do to make it from the ocean to the bay. And don't hit any rocks or boats. everyone is happy. BTW, A boat under sail, can still stop on a dime. You just have to release 2 lines, and let your sails heave to in the wind. (let them flap around, with no tension on the control lines, and worry about the rest later)

Re: Sailboat vs. Powerboat and Rights of Way. much like folks on bicycles who ride in the middle of the lane, I have problems with people who may well be legally correct but who have no consideration for anyone else .... to me, jet ski operators who cut as close as they can to the back of our boat so as to jump the wake fall in that group as do folks paddling a shallow draft boat choosing to block the middle of the channel .... since I can't control what they do I've evolved to where I let them go and don't worry about it .... for us, time on the water is relaxing and getting stressed over such things makes it far less enjoyable Jim

Re: Sailboat vs. Powerboat and Rights of Way. This may have had nothing to do with "no consideration for anyone else". I haven't read any indication that the sailboat did anything 'wrong' (though passing with only 10 feet is certainly discourteous, unnecessary, and may have constituted poor judgement). If I were coming in an inlet and the wind were favorable I well might prefer coming in under sail as well. If I found myself overtaking an 18' I/O and he chose to keep moving toward the rocks I can't control that. The law says I have to maneuver around him, if he keeps moving to one side I can't control that, and then if he is not in front of me I have no action to take. To say that the wake from a sailboat is 'excessive' is (usually) a bit of a stretch. If I am coming in a nasty inlet I'm going to do it in the way that I have the best control of my situation, which is usually also the safest.

Two people hurt, sailboat sunk after Hingham boat crash

By Tammy Mutasa

August 16, 2024 / 11:19 PM EDT / CBS Boston

HINGHAM - Two people were seriously hurt and rushed to hospitals, after a dramatic boat crash in Hingham Bay, Hingham, first responders said.

Sailboat sunk in crash

A sailboat sank into the water after, investigators said, a speedboat crashed into it, leaving two people hurt.

The crash rocked lifelong boaters like Bill Norton, who could see the mast of the sailboat ominously sticking up from his house across the bay.

"I was hoping nobody got hurt. You can replace a boat, but the people getting hurt - that's a different story," said Norton. "Sailboat has the right of way over a powerboat, every time."

skyeye-hingham-boat-accidnet-20240816-01-frame-41457.jpg

'Not a common occurrence'

Water Taxi Captain Ray Suarez saw the aftermath as he went back and forth shuttling passengers all day. He's been on the water most of his life and said  the site was unusual.

"We saw the mast just sticking out of the water. There was a lot of state police and salvage boats trying to figure out what to do with it," said Captain Suarez. "Sailboats generally go very slow, and powerboats generally go very fast. So, somebody obviously wasn't paying attention because they hit the boat so hard that they sank it, and that's not a common occurrence."

Hingham and Weymouth first responders, and Massachusetts Environmental Police rushed to the rescue after the boat crash. First responders say a towboat will work to recover the submerged sailboat because it's a danger to other boats navigating the bay.

"Make sure you have life preservers for everyone on board, you go at a safe pace, so you stay safe and you keep the people around you safe as well," said Captain Suarez.

The Massachusetts Environmental Police are investigating the incident.
