The world-class annual Newport International Boat Show kicks off the Boat Show season in September.

Rhode Island got its name from early explorers who sailed near Aquidneck Island, the largest island in Narragansett Bay and may have seen red fall foliage and/or red clay shoreline bluffs, giving the island a reddish appearance (rhode), though most of the state’s land area is actually part of the mainland. Narragansett Bay is Rhode Island’s primary topographical feature with over 30 islands within the bay. Aquidneck Island, the largest, consists of Portsmouth (north), Middletown, and Newport (south). Second largest island is Conanicut and third largest is Prudence Island. Block Island lies about 12-13 miles off the mainland coast and is separated from the mainland by a 10-mile-wide strait called Block Island Sound in the Atlantic Ocean. Block Island Sound extends east to Montauk Point of Long Island along with Plum Island, Gardiners Island, and Fishers Island, all part of New York State and to the Rhode Island Sound. To west the strait extends to Long Island Sound, all major waterways for recreational cruising vessels and commercial boat traffic.

Rhode Island’s first English settlement was Providence on land granted by the Narragansett people to Roger Williams in 1636, who was fleeing religious persecution. Other people who were political or religious dissidents or social outcasts fled to the area and settled Aquidneck Island, founding Portsmouth in northern part and Newport in the south. Samuel Gorton bought land from the Narragansetts in 1642 and obtained a separate charter from the crown in 1648 for the settlement he named Warwick. Roger Williams and other settlements consolidated to apply for colony status from the English crown (Charles I) as “Providence Plantations (Colony)” from 1643 to 1663, when a new charter was issued. Providence Plantations was the first colony to call for a Continental Congress in 1774 and renounce allegiance to British rule in 1776. In 1790, after the American Revolution, the new state became known as State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations and the name remained until 2020 when voters finally dropped the latter part. Rhode Island was the last of the 13 original colonies to ratify the U.S. Constitution, only after being assured that a Bill of Rights would become part of the Constitution.

The capital and most populated city is Providence, and the location of ivy league Brown University, founded in 1764, one of nine colleges granted charters before the American Revolution and the first to accept students regardless of their religious affiliation, in character with Rhode Island’s first settlers. The city’s green is now named Roger Williams Park, after the founder. Providence features the landscaped Waterplace Park and Riverwalk with the famed WaterFire art installation, a 1994 sculpture by Barnaby Evans presented on the rivers of downtown Providence. The sculpture consists of 86 burning braziers; some float just above the rivers’ surface as they flow through Waterplace Park and center of downtown Providence. Originally created in celebration of the “First Night Providence” New Year’s Eve music and performing arts festival’s 10th anniversary, it has now become an annual public art attraction.

Rhode Island had a primary role in the Industrial Revolution in New England in 1787 with the advent of cotton mills powered by flowing river water. Moses Brown of Providence and partner Samuel Slater built the first water-powered cotton mill in America, on one of the many rivers in Rhode Island. Moses Brown and brother Nicholas co-founded the college that became Brown University. Many of Rhode Island’s major metro centers today derive from industrial development along the Blackstone, Seekonk, and Providence Rivers where water-powered textile mills were built.

The fifty years following the Civil War were a time of great prosperity and affluence for Rhode Island as it became the center of the “Gilded Age” when many of the country’s most prominent and wealthiest industrialists built grand residential mansions or summer “cottages” on Rhode Island’s beautiful shores. Newport became the summer haven for New York’s uber-wealthy to build opulent estates and found private membership sports clubs for recreation and socializing. The Newport Casino, built in 1879 to 1881 by New York Herald publisher, James Gordon Bennett, Jr was the focus of “Gilded Age” social life through the 1920s for a variety of outdoor and indoor recreational activities, including lawn tennis. The first American Lawn Tennis championships were held on the Newport Casino courts. The shingle style building was designed by noted “Gilded Age” architectural firm, McKim, Mead & White. Newport Casino was designated a National Historic Landmark (NHL) in 1987 and listed on the National Register of Historical Places (NRHP) in 1970. It now houses the International Hall of Fame and features an active grass-court tennis club.

Some of the most notable historic mansions in Newport were designed by McKim, Mead & White, such as “Rosecliff,” built 1898-1902 for socialite Theresa Fair Oelrichs (silver heiress from Nevada) who commissioned the design of a summer home for entertaining on a “grand scale.” The Providence capitol building, Rhode Island State House, was also designed by McKim, Mead & White and features the fourth largest structural stone dome in the world. Another prominent architect of that era, Richard Morris Hunt, designed the Vanderbilt family’s 5-story, 70-room mansion “The Breakers” in the Beaux-Arts Renaissance Revival style, and designed Alva & William Kissam Vanderbilt’s summer cottage “Marble House” in the Beaux-Arts style of peerless opulence when completed in 1892. The mansion’s interior was used for several films (The Great Gatsby in 1974, 27 Dresses in 2008), a TV Series (America 1972-73), and a Victoria’s Secret holiday commercial in 2012. Today it is a museum run by the Newport Preservation Society. “Belcourt” was another “summer cottage” mansion designed by Richard Morris Hunt for Oliver Hazard Perry Belmont, son of August Belmont, Sr. for whom the Belmont Stakes were named. Oliver loved horses and the “castle” as it came to be known, had extensive stables and carriage areas that were part of the main house. The estate is currently owned by Harle Tinny and is the only mansion in Newport that is open to the public as a museum of antiquities and architectural & social history with a private owner in residence. Block Island was discovered in 1614 by Dutch explorer Adrian Block, who named it for himself. The island, just 13 miles from the Rhode Island coast, was settled in 1661 and incorporated in 1672 as New Shoreham. For nearly 200 years it remained a fisherman’s outpost, until the mid-1800s when steamboat passage opened up the island to visitors from the mainland for summer island getaways and sprawling Victorian beachside hotels were built to accommodate them. Tourism replaced fishing as the dominant economy. Two historical lighthouses, North Light, built in1867 of brownstone and the red-brick Southeast Lighthouse, built in 1800s, stands atop dramatic cliffs of Mohegan Bluffs overlooking rocky beaches below. Crescent Beach is a popular sandy beach on the east coast for summer visitors arriving by ferry or boat. Actor Christopher Walken has a summer home on Block Island.

Historic, summer resort town, Newport “City-By-The-Sea” on the south end of Aquidneck Island, was the site of the first US Open Tournaments in both tennis and golf, and every challenge to the annual sailing regatta, America’s Cup, for over 50 years (1930-1983) in Newport Harbor. Newport is considered the “birthplace of tennis” and “America’s First Resort” with stunning views of Newport Harbor, Narragansett Bay, and Newport Bridge. Named by major travel magazines as one of the top destinations in the country for its famed seaside mansions and other beautiful historic architecture, galleries, restaurants, shopping, and the many other activities, events and attractions enjoyed by visitors from all around the world.

The historic waterfront shopping district includes the lower Thames Street and America’s Cup Avenue that run parallel to the waterfront, the Brick Market Place with its picturesque wharves reminiscent of Newport’s seafaring days, Long Wharf Mall, Bowen’s Wharf, Washington Square, and Bannister’s Wharf & Marina with Clarke Cooke House Restaurant as its focal point. The entire area is lively with eclectic dining, boutique shops, and nightlife. Bowen’s Wharf with deep water dockage for yachts to 185ft LOA is located in the center of Newport’s waterfront and features boating, dining, cocktails, shopping, events, tours & attractions, and nightlife.

In-water exhibits of the newest offerings of Powerboat and Sailboat models plus Charters, Marine Equipment, Services and Accessories surrounded by gorgeous fall foliage scenery, national historic sites and museums, world-class restaurants and shopping, and exciting nightlife make Newport International Boat Show the ideal kick-off to the U.S. Boat Show season.

With over 30 islands to explore in Narragansett Bay along with the many seaside towns and harbors along its 400 miles of coastline, Rhode Island is a wonderful boaters’ destination. There are numerous marinas and marine facilities along the waterways that offer very basic services to a full array of amenities, such as power and water hook-ups, restrooms, showers, pump-out, wifi, floating docks, ice, laundry facilities, security, dinghy docks, fuel dock, ships store, captains lounge, onsite restaurant/bar, BBQ grills, picnic area, swimming pool, maintenance facilities, oil recycling, travel lift, and more. A Providence couple is turning a lot of heads when it comes to their recent purchase. (WJAR)

WARWICK, R.I. (WJAR) — A Providence couple is turning a lot of heads when it comes to their recent purchase.

Anita and Dawaye Ratchford have been together for more than 20 years.

The couple each have their own interests and personal hobbies.

“Mine is the ocean, and his is cars," said Anita.

Anita is a Pisces. She said she's always loved being on the water and participating in anything related to it.

Dawayne has always loved cars. He works on them in his free time, and he's very handy.

With a love for both, Dawayne had an idea to purchase a boat that looked like a car.

Dawayne said his research led him to a company that produced just that.

“I honestly was looking into it because I’m into cars, she’s into water, so I honestly wanted to find something that fits both of us," he said. "I saw these and did a lot of research and they're built in Turkey but in Miami for sale."

Dawayne purchased a Watercraft Sports Car.

It cost a pretty penny, but it was an investment Anita said was worth it.

“Together 20-something years, I support anything he does. I'm kind of like a car girl now too, plus, I love the water too so why not? I’m just a passenger princess," she said.

The exterior is an almost identical replica of a dark blue Rolls-Royce with leopard print trim.

It's a boat, made similarly to the car, except it's only for water.

“People are confused. They want to know if it drives on the road or water, so I have to keep explaining it’s just for the water and it’s a boat," he said. “It has a gas pedal. Gas and reverse just like a car.”

Two months ago, Dawayne traveled to Florida to pick up the boat.

He hauled it back to Rhode Island in a trailer and did some of his own work on it.

“As far as the radio, the AC, anything else that I wanted, I added a convertible roof too, just things that I like, to make it mine," he said.

The boat can reach up to 70 mph.

It seats four people comfortably and has an interior similar to that of a sports car.

“It moves fast like a Jet Ski, and it’s comfortable like a boat," he said. “You have to feel it to enjoy it. You have to be in it to feel it to understand it.”

Since launching their boat into the water, hundreds of people who catch a glimpse of it can't believe their eyes.

Dozens have taken or posed for pictures with it.

“All different kinds of reactions, a lot of good ones. We never see the negative ones, but we hear them on social media, but it’s alright we’re having fun," said Anita.

"I’m enjoying that’s all that matters," added Dawayne. "It's different than what everybody else is riding, and driving, so I just like to be different.”

The Ratchfords said to their knowledge, they're the only ones with a boat like theirs, on the water, in the Ocean State.

“I really don’t like the attention but then I do. It’s bittersweet," said Anita.

“This is different. Everything else I have is on land, but this is for the water and for her. I can take her out, be on the water, and still be in a car," said Dawayne.

RI's median home price hits new record - nearly a half-million dollars

Multi-family buildings went from $250k in april 2019 to $550k in july.

All three of Rhode Island's house markets – condos, single-family homes and multi-family homes – hit record high median prices in July.

The median price of a single-family home in Rhode Island creeped a bit closer to nearly $500,000, double the median pre-pandemic price, despite interest rates near 6.5% and more houses trickling onto the market.

At $495,000 , the median price in July is an all-time record. It was was $1,000 higher than the June median price of $494,000 , which was also a record. Before that, in May, the median price was $460,000 , which was also the record high at the time.

The housing market is so hot that homes spent an average of just 18 days on the market in July – the shortest amount of time since 1988, when statewide records started.

What is driving the high prices? The housing market obeys the laws of supply and demand. In this case, despite ever-rising prices and high interest rates (compared to the last 20 years), demand for the few houses on the market remains strong.

Rhode Island is in a housing crisis. Part of that crisis is a lack of new supply, with few new homes, apartment buildings of multi-family houses being built. The fight over supply is the subject of a court case, and major issue in the Cranston mayor's race as a developer is trying to build eight, instead of four, houses on 9.5 acres of land next to a development that already allows the same level of density the developer is seeking.

No supply drives up prices: In July, 1,313 houses were listed for sale, up slightly from 1,305 listed in June and 1,226 listed in May.

At the onset of the pandemic, people took their houses off the market. The level of inventory agents call "healthy" is at least 3,500 single-family listings in the state and has yet to return since the pandemic. That leaves often well-heeled buyers competing for the few houses that come on the market.

More properties on the market, either new builds or new listings, would theoretically give buyers more choices and bring down prices.

Last month, agent Bryan Quinlan said, in order for prices to take a nose dive, half of the home-owning population in the state would need to put their houses on the market, all at once.

Rhode Island's housing market at a glance

Multi-family market continues to explode: The price of a multi-family house in Rhode Island hit a new high in July, $550,000, more than double its low point in 2019, in April, at $250,000.

What did the rest of the market's inventory look like in July?

The single-family house market:

  • Listed houses: 1,313 (up from 1,305 in June)
  • Days on market: 18 (down from 23 days in June)
  • Sold: 812 (up from 675 in June)

The multi-family house market:

  • Listed: 249 (up from 208 in June)
  • Days on market: 21 (21 in June)
  • Sold: 142 (145 in June)

The condo market:

  • Listed: 335 (333 in June)
  • Days on market: 31 (28 in June)
  • Sold: 201 (161 in June)

What are they saying? Rhode Island Association of Realtors President Sally Hersey wrote in a news release that the increase in houses listed is good for the market, and the potential for a cut in interest rates may push homeowners to consider listing their homes and buying again.

"More inventory and lower interest rates should help to get the market moving. We’re hopeful that 2024’s housing market will be ending on an upswing,” she wrote.

What is happening in the rest of country? Rhode Island is both an outlier, and right in line with national trends. Nationally, the median single-family home price dipped to $439,950 in July, down from $445,000 in June. While Rhode Island's ever-increasing median house price is not what is happening nationally, Rhode Island's prices are right in line with national numbers.

British tech billionaire Mike Lynch and his daughter are among six people missing after a superyacht sank in a storm off the coast of Sicily - with one person confirmed to have died.

Twenty-two people were on board the vessel, 15 of whom were rescued - including Briton Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter Sofia.

Four other Britons and two Americans remain missing, including Mr Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, according to Italian media. The entrepreneur's wife Angela Bacares was rescued.

Here's what we know about the sinking of the luxury vessel so far.

What might have caused the sinking?

The British-flagged luxury vessel, named the Bayesian, capsized at around 4.30am local time off Palermo, according to ship-tracking site Marine Traffic.

It sank with 22 people on board - 12 passengers and a crew of 10, according to the Italian coastguard.

Waterspouts, essentially tornados which form over water, were seen as powerful winds battered the area overnight, local media said.

The yacht may have also tipped over more easily with all the doors open due to the hot weather, Sailing Today magazine editor Sam Jefferson has said.

"I imagine all the doors were open because it was hot, so there were enough hatches and doors open that it filled with water very quickly and sank like that," he said.

"The reason it got pinned over so hard was because the mast is huge. It acted almost like a sail. [It] pushed the boat hard over on its side. (The boat) filled with water before it could right."

Official pictures show air conditioning units in several of the rooms, however, which could counter the suggestion open windows caused the vessel to sink faster.

What are waterspouts?

Waterspouts typically occur during thunderstorms and can develop very rapidly, within minutes.

Their spin generally reaches wind speeds between 75-200mph, but can reach as high as 300mph.

They can travel at around 10-20mph typically but can reach greater speeds, making them difficult to avoid - especially in something as slow-moving as a yacht.

Matthew Schanck, chair of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, called the reports of a tornado or waterspout "rare" and "quite alarming".

"The vessel was at anchor in a recognised anchorage," Mr Schanck said.

"Depending on wind direction and the state of the sea, this informs the captain whether it is a safe area to anchor or not. There was nothing that was too concerning, for my eye. All in all, the captain used the information they had to make a safe call."

Who owns the yacht?

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch is among those missing.

The 59-year-old owner of the yacht is known as the "British Bill Gates" and has been in the headlines in recent months over a high-profile fraud case.

In June, a US jury cleared him of all charges , which were related to the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard (HP).

HP accused him of deliberately overstating the value of the company before it was acquired by the American tech giant.

Mr Lynch was extradited to the US to face trial in May last year and spent 13 months under house arrest in San Francisco as he awaited trial on 17 charges of conspiracy and wire fraud brought by the US Department of Justice - which were later reduced to 15 charges. He always denied any wrongdoing and was acquitted.

Who was on board when the boat sank?

The vessel had passengers from Britain, America and Canada, the Italian coastguard said.

Most of those on board were British, Italian news outlets have reported, adding that the others were from New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and Ireland.

Charlotte Golunski was among the Britons rescued. Her LinkedIn profile says she is a partner at Mr Lynch's firm Invoke Capital and has worked there since 2012.

Speaking after the ordeal, Ms Golunski told Italian media that she lost her daughter Sofia for "two seconds" amid the "fury" of the sea but was able to retrieve her. She said she held the infant above the waves until the lifeboat was ready.

"Many people screamed. Luckily the lifeboat inflated and 11 of us were able to get on board," she told ANSA.

The girl's father James Emsley also survived, according to Sicily's civil protection agency.

Also on board were Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of investment bank Morgan Stanley, his wife Judy Bloomer, a top US lawyer Chris Morvillo, who worked on Mr Lynch's criminal case, and his wife Neda Morvillo.

Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan chef who was working on the boat, has been found dead, the Italian Coastguard has confirmed to Sky News.

Eight of those rescued were transferred to local hospitals and all were in stable condition, local media reported.

During rescue efforts, divers saw "corpses through the portholes" of the wreck as they recovered the body of a man at a depth of 50m (164ft), according to Salvo Cocina, the head of the Civil Protection of Sicily.

What do we know about the vessel?

The Bayesian was known for its unusual 72.3m (246ft) single mast - one of the world's tallest made of aluminium - and shared its name with the statistical method Mr Lynch's Autonomy software was based on.

It was built by Italian company Perini Navi in 2008 and last refitted in 2020.

It was listed for rent for up to €195,000 (£166,000) a week, according to online charter sites.

The luxury vessel, which was managed by yachting company Camper & Nicholsons, can accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites.

It won a string of awards for its design, according to online specialist yacht sites.

Mr Schanck said the vessel would have been equipped with "high standard" life-saving appliances and radio communications. He added the yacht would have met all international standards and UK maritime coastguard agency regulations before its voyage.

The boat left the Sicilian port of Milazzo on 14 August and was last tracked east of Palermo on Sunday evening, with a navigation status of "at anchor", according to vessel tracking site VesselFinder.

The Bayesian previously travelled to other parts of Sicily before its last sighting off the coast of the port of Porticello.

On Sunday, the boat was seen off the coast of Cefalu before it travelled towards Porticello, MarineTraffic data shows.

In the days before, the yacht travelled around four of the Aeolian islands, just north of Sicily.

It was previously named Salute, or "health" in Italian, when it flew under a Dutch flag. Its minimalist interior featured light wood with Japanese accents designed by the French designer Remi Tessier, according to descriptions on charter sites.
