Owner of 60m Feadship superyacht ROCK.IT owner explains his design choices

  • Superyachts

Feadship's 60-metre beauty ROCK.IT is testament to the custom superyacht experience...

“When the doors slide open on the main deck, every time I come in there it just blows me away!” says Jimmy John Liautaud. Words spoken by a proud owner show just how 60.34-metre ROCK.IT has more than lived up to expectations after her first year on the water.

“ ROCK.IT is very sleek and bold without being pretentious,” says exterior and interior designer Sander Sinot of Sinot Exclusive Yacht Design. “A natural flow of lines and surfaces makes the yacht breathe speed and exude elegance.”

A marriage of cool Dutch design and hot American passion has given the yacht a unique soul, and, after her first year of cruising , ROCK.IT has taken on a personality of her own.

“The owner wanted to have a yacht that was fast from the outside and cosy from the inside,” says Sipke Halbertsma, sales manager at Feadship. “ ROCK.IT has a classic Feadship hull from the front, but if you look at her profile you’ll see the exterior lines work to make her look fast.”

However, the aggressive, forward movement of the exterior is softened by the interior, also by Sinot: a marriage of old Americana mahogany and modern Dutch minimalism. A surprising pairing, perhaps, but one that works hard to earn its keep as both a cosy family retreat and a raring-to-go party space.

Nothing is out of place, and the rooms don’t feel busy, but there is a warmth that pervades above all. It manages to be both contemporary and comfortable.

However, this is not just any mahogany. The highest quality crotched mahogany was sourced and then ‘folded’ out, so that the panels all match symmetrically, a difficult and lengthy process. Lavish use of glass throughout means the interior benefits from lots of natural light, stopping the wood from feeling too heavy.

ROCK.IT cockpit

A well-stocked bar with backlit white onyx proves the focal part of the room, from which the spaces divide out into individual lounging areas, each made distinct by their own soft cream carpet.

ROCK.IT feels voluminous, and while the high ceilings certainly aid this, so does the interior design, which allows for spaces to flow from one designated area to the next, creating capsule environments. Rather than having the feeling of a bridge deck salon, the room is separated into useful and efficient spaces, which makes it feel much larger.

Bars are a recurring theme on board, with each deck hosting a unique and ample-sized offering. On the main deck, the bar, complete with full-height wine chiller, is the first thing you see when you walk through the sliding doors.

Resplendent in backlit onyx and glossy mahogany and based in a circular ante-chamber, it separates the formal dining space, with a stunning table by Pollaro, and the outside entertaining space, immediately imparting the good-time vibe felt throughout ROCK.IT .

ROCK.IT saloon

In the centre is a table and chairs, made in-house by Feadship, and drawing the whole area together as a relaxed lounging space that accommodates all twelve guests. Aft of the central bar is a row of deckchairs and a large tender and two Yamaha Waverunners.

“We have some owners that want two or three tenders and lots of toys, but the owner of ROCK.IT is really about yachting and diving, so the guest tender we store up top and the rescue tender is in a big hatch forward of the bridge,” says Halbertsma.

Not having the tenders stored in the beach club gives a feeling of more space elsewhere on the yacht, especially in the guest and crew accommodation.

As a yard, Feadship is known for focusing its efforts on offering bespoke superyachts , where there is no ordinary and exceptional is the new normal. And exceptional is no hyperbole. Liautaud took the ability to create a custom superyacht and ran with it.

“During his many visits to the yard, we had terrific fun with this unconventional and no-compromise client,” says CEO Henk de Vries. “His between-your-eyes honesty and tremendous respect for and appreciation of Feadship craftsmanship pushed us to new heights.”

ROCK.IT is one of the quietest yachts Feadship has ever made, and also was the first to utilise an intuitive control and manoeuvring system, commonly used on navy ships. The system allows ROCK.IT to keep her heading at anchor by hovering on the main engine and thrusters.

“I was willing to accept this new system because it comes from a proven military background,” says ROCK.IT ’s build captain. “The manoeuvring system represents a real step towards the future. To make it happen took real vision and considerable skill.”

ROCK.IT owner's cabin

This allows all the guest cabins, consisting of two large doubles, a smaller double and a twin, to be large and well-appointed, keeping a democratic harmony and reinforcing the feel of the yacht as a family home away from home.

Unsurprisingly, however, the owner’s cabin is pretty spectacular. Full beam and located on the main deck, the suite is accessed via an opulent marble lobby, past the dramatic mahogany-panelled staircase which links the guest areas.

A private study opens out into the full-beam cabin, which is characterised by the same deep mahogany as seen throughout the rest of the yacht, and soft furnishings in creams and whites. Huge windows ensure the room is always full of light.

ROCK.IT bathroom

Forward are large his’n’hers bathrooms, gleaming with marble and backlit stone. The sink in Liautaud’s bathroom is crafted from a single block of black Portoro marble, weighing almost 500 kilograms.

His wife Leslie’s side boasts a large French-style free standing bath, a rarity on a superyacht, as well as a wealth of Staturio marble and an elegant vanity unit.

With so much effort put into creating such a homely space, it would be easy to expect the owners to never leave their suite, however this is far from the case. There is no favourite space on board: “You know what, I love them all,” says Liautaud.

“We spend least time on the main deck, we spend most of our time on the swim platform and the sundeck, and we live in the bridge deck.”

The bridge deck is a compromise between the formal main deck and the relaxed sundeck. An al fresco dining table aft can be sheltered from a breeze by sliding glass panels, and the large doors into the salon create an easy inside/outside entertaining space.

Further aft, two smaller tables surrounded by sofas move up and down to serve either as coffee tables or dining tables, and match the larger table to create a symbiosis between the areas.

ROCK.IT

“Sander Sinot and Leslie did all of the art on board,” says the owner. “A couple of friends and musicians gave us a couple of pieces. I did the hardscape and Leslie did all the soft and the colour. That’s our deal.” The art makes the rooms feel personal, and adds a vitality to the otherwise flawless walls.

“Each Feadship is totally unique and no two Feadship owners are the same,” says De Vries. “It is our privilege to create the most amazing yachts on the oceans for the most fascinating people on the planet, and it has been a great experience to partner with the owner of ROCK.IT .”

The experience is, of course, of an owner involving himself in every aspect of the creation of his yacht, which, although perhaps not always easy, is what allows it to come alive in such a palpable way.

rock it yacht new owner

This is perhaps what gives her such a tangible soul, the passion that went into creating something that would still excite so much after so many days spent aboard. ROCK.IT is an apt name for a yacht that makes an owner’s heart soar, like a rocket into outer space.

60m Feadship superyacht Rock.It sold

The 60.4-metre Feadship motor yacht Rock.It has been sold by Merle A. Wood of Merle Wood & Associates and Rupert Nelson at Burgess , with Tom George of OneWater Yachts acting on behalf of the new owner.

Rock.It was commissioned by an American client and marked the third collaboration between Sinot Exclusive Yacht Design and the Dutch builder following work on Musashi and Fountainhead . She was delivered in 2014 and joined the market after a year-long refit that was completed in 2020 and saw her receive new upholstery inside and out, a full repaint, upgraded audiovisual systems, a new owner's office and a number of exterior modifications. She has had one owner since new.

An Art Deco interior features flame mahogany, backlit white onyx and custom furniture by Frank Pollaro throughout. She can offer accommodation for 11 guests in five en suite cabins, comprising a full beam master suite on the main deck, two VIP suites, a double and a twin. There are also quarters for 14 crew.

Her main saloon features a formal bar with two large seating areas to port and starboard. Further forward, a formal dining area is home to a custom table in Macassar ebony and seats 12 guests with glass bulkheads to either side that slide open and lead to drop-down terraces. A 159-inch television screen flips down from the ceiling between the main saloon and the formal dining area, creating a home cinema set-up on demand.

Exterior spaces are generous, too, and she boasts no fewer than three bars on her decks. A circular table on the aft deck is sheltered from the elements beneath the overhang of the sun deck with glass side panels protecting diners from the wind. Another al fresco dining option can be found on the sundeck above beneath a canopy skylight that dims automatically depending on the strength of the sunlight.

Twin 1,520hp MTU 12V4000 M53R diesel engines give the 1,052GT vessel a top speed of 15 knots and a range of 5,300 nautical miles at 12 knots. Her zero-speed stabilisers were serviced in 2023.

Rock.It was asking $44,900,000.

An interview with Jimmy Liautaud, owner of 60m Rock. It, to find out why he is now selling his beloved first build…

Image for article Rocket man

I begin my conversation with James ‘Jimmy’ Liautaud, owner of 60m Feadship  Rock. It,  with a challenge. Can he tell me what is his most valuable takeaway from his journey with  Rock.It ? “That is one heck of an icebreaker,” he replies. Such straight-talking is a feature of our interview, and indicative of the realities of his superyachting experience. Reflecting on his foray into yacht ownership so far, Liautaud sees the past eight years – from the beginning of the design of  Rock.It  to the present day – as a period of continual growth and a shift in priorities. “Eight years ago, when I began this journey, my life was a lot different; I was 45. I am 53 now. A lot of things change in that time. The biggest difference is that my kids and I are eight years older, my interests are eight years older and the way I spend my time is eight years older.” Something that hasn’t changed in those eight years is Liautaud’s high level of enthusiasm, be it his attitude to life (“I enjoy the journey of life! It’s short. This is not a dress rehearsal. This is the big show. It is great, maximise it!”) to his description of his latest cruise (“Glorious, glorious, best ever!”). He is a man who is happy on, and with, his yacht. Since her launch in 2014,  Rock. It  has been at the heart of Liautaud’s family life. Seeing the vessel as another family home, the yacht has travelled almost 40,000 miles, from the Great Lakes to the Galapagos, to the Mediterranean, which is where he is when we speak. Although he has chartered frequently in the region, this is the first appearance of  Rock.It  in its waters. When we speak, Liautaud is deep in the process of finalising the designs and moving into the engineering phase of his next project. Now with his knowledge of the design and build process, and ability to apply it to this next project that is still very much under wraps, Liautaud is seeing the new build through experienced eyes. Using his time with  Rock. It, he has a higher level of understanding of the intricacies of new construction and the final product, and this means that every aspect of the next vessel is in line with his thinking. Having learned that the design and build process can take a substantial amount of time, Liautaud is aware it will be at least another three years before he can set foot on his next yacht. Therefore, he is planning for what his life will be like then, rather than now. “I am looking further ahead; how am I going to use the vessel? What am I going to do with it? Where am I going to go? What do I want? And so I am way more educated,” he says. For the next project, he has a clear vision, and a precise programme, of what he wants, as well as what he doesn’t want.

“You are going to make some mistakes and that is half the fun. What’s more, the fun is the journey of understanding and the exploration! It is a journey not a destination, and it is a glorious journey. I love the chase, I love the journey, and if you love that, it’s a blast!”

A fundamental difference between  Rock. It  and Liautaud’s new project is the use of the new vessel.  Rock.It  was used exclusively by the family, something Liautaud will move away from in future. “I built the boat around the idea that I am not going to charter her and I don’t like a lot of people on board,” says Liautaud, who sees  Rock. It  as a personal space. However, once she was delivered, he quickly realised that his use of the boat didn’t marry well with this opinion. Using  Rock.It  for a maximum of eight or ten weeks a year made him rethink his position on private versus charter, something that will influence the design of his second build. “For the next vessel, I am going to charter it and I will put things in the boat that might not necessarily work great for me, that I may not use, but charter guests may want,” he says. Like many owners, Liautaud views chartering as an option for recuperating some of the running costs of a yacht as well as an opportunity to ensure the vessel and its crew are maintained to a high standard. “I’ll charter to maximise the asset, it needs to move. If they don’t move they get rusty (both the crew and the boat).” Since  Rock. It  was launched, it’s safe to say that Liautaud has most definitely enjoyed the ride. His positive outlook, combined with a continual drive to improve his vessels, is the mentality that helps this industry continue to evolve and grow. His passion for his yacht is infectious and is the apogee of what an owner’s experience of the industry should be. So what is Liautaud’s reply to my initial question? What is his most valuable takeway from the journey with  Rock. It?  “Go for it. You are going to make some mistakes and that is half the fun. What’s more, the fun is the journey of understanding and the exploration! It is a journey not a destination, and it is a glorious journey. I love the chase, I love the journey, and if you love that, it’s a blast!” To that I say, ‘Rock on.’ This interview originally appeared in issue 181 of The Superyacht Report. “Each Feadship is unique and no two Feadship owners are the same,” stated Feadship director Henk de Vries to an audience of several hundred guests at the launching ceremony. “It is our privilege at Feadship to create the most amazing yachts on the oceans for the most fascinating people on the planet, and it has been an amazing and sometimes rollercoaster ride to partner with the owner of ROCK.IT.

“During his many visits to the yard, we had terrific fun with this unconventional and no-compromise client. His between-your-eyes honesty and tremendous respect for and appreciation of Feadship craftsmanship pushed us to new heights. This is the epitome of the Feadship experience, which encompasses the entire design and construction process. ROCK.IT is a true 21st-century Feadship: stunning aesthetic design nestled in a super-stable oceangoing package that will truly rock the waves.”

Taking the challenge

It takes only the briefest of glances at superyacht ROCK.IT to see the challenge faced by the yard, the designers and naval architects from Sinot Yacht Design and Feadship. They had to pull out all the stops to realise the owner’s vision of a striking, innovative and sporty look. “ROCK.IT is very sleek and bold without being pretentious,” explained exterior designer Sander Sinot. “A natural flow of lines and surfaces makes the yacht breathe speed and exude elegance.”

The awesomeness continues inside, where dark precious woods and light stones are blended in a fantastically detailed classic modern interior. Splendidly spacious thanks to the full-beam throughout, crotched mahogany and striking diagonally veneered sycamore panelling create a very personal touch. Backlit pure White Onyx in combination with the most exquisite Portoro and other marbles elevate the interior to a higher level without losing its main purpose of being a true family yacht. But ROCK.IT yacht is also a party boat when the time is right.

Superyacht ROCK.IT

One of the most striking features of mega yacht ROCK.IT is the skylight in the sun deck canopy, which dims automatically depending on the strength of the sunlight. This allows for an open feel while optimising comfort levels.

Cutting edge

The ROCK.IT superyacht contains cutting edge technology, as in the installation of a unique control system that includes a semi-DP autopilot system. This will allow the yacht to keep her heading at anchor, hovering on the main engine and the thrusters. Optimal use of the various manoeuvring modes is made by means of a three-axis steering joystick with a rotational factor. “I was willing to accept this new system because it comes from a proven military background,” said ROCK.IT yacht’s captain. “I’m also glad we did this with Feadship as it requires a high degree of confidence in the hardware and the people. This maneuvering system represents a real step towards the future. To make it happen at this point in time, took real vision and considerable skill.”

Motor Yacht

The 60.35 metre superyacht ROCK.IT launched from the Feadship yard in 2014, bringing an effortless style to the water thanks to exterior design from Sinot Yacht Design and engineering and architecture from De Voogt Naval Architects. A new wave of contemporary style with traditional comforts, ROCK.IT was designed and built for an experienced owner who made the leap from chartering Feadships, to creating thier own custom superyacht.

Fast, sleek and modern styling gives way to a cosy and expertly designed interior, also by Sinot Yacht Design, which accommodates up to 10 guests in 5 staterooms.  Dark precious woods and light stones are blended in a fantastically detailed classic modern interior. But ROCK.IT is also a party boat when the time is right.

One of the most striking features is the skylight in the sun deck canopy, which dims automatically depending on the strength of the sunlight. This allows for an open feel while optimising comfort levels. The bespoke superyacht project features an innovative control and maneuvering system developed for naval applications, never before seen on a yacht. This allows ROCK.IT to keep her heading at anchor, hovering on the main engine and the thrusters. Optimal use of the various manoeuvring modes is made by means of a three-axis steering joystick with a rotational factor.

Maker of bayesian yacht blames crew for ‘indescribable, unreasonable errors’ in doomed vessel’s sinking.

The CEO of the company that built the $40 million yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily this week has blamed the crew for the tragedy — saying they had 16 minutes and could have easily saved the seven who died.

“The boat suffered a series of indescribable, unreasonable errors,” Giovanni Costantino, CEO of the Italian Sea Group, told Reuters of the Bayesian sinking Monday, killing seven of the 22 onboard.

“The impossible happened on that boat … but it went down because it took on water. From where, the investigators will tell,” he said.

Mike Lynch wraps his arm around his teen daughter Hannah and both smile for a photo, on a sidewalk.

Blaming the crew for the “incredible mistake” of not being prepared for the storm, he said: “This is the mistake that cries out for vengeance.”

Costantino, whose company includes Perini Navi, the Italian high-end yacht maker that built the 183-foot superyacht in 2008, staunchly defended its construction — saying it had survived far more extreme storms during 22 years of trouble-free navigation.

Instead, he expressed horror that the crew was unable to save the seven who died — including the Bayesian’s owner, British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, and his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah.

He said the crew had a 16-minute window before the craft sank — plenty of time to get everyone to safety.

“The torture lasted 16 minutes,” he told the Financial Times.

“It went down, not in one minute as some scientists have said. It went down in 16 minutes. You can see it from the charts, from the AIS [Automatic Identification System] tracking chart,” he said.

Constantino wears a navy suit , smiles and folds his arms while standing next to a model ship on display.

Additionally, doors and hatches should have been closed, and the keel should have been lowered to increase stability, among other safety measures, Costantino said.

Had correct procedures been followed, all passengers would have gone back to sleep after one hour, “and the next morning they would have happily resumed their wonderful cruise,” he added.

“The captain should have prepared the boat and put it in a state of alert and of safety.”

“Ask yourself — why were none of the Porticello fishermen out that night? A fisherman checks the conditions and a ship doesn’t? The disturbance was completely readable on all the weather maps. It was impossible not to know,” he said.

What to know after a tornado sank the yacht Bayesian off the coast of Sicily:

  • A superyacht capsized off the coast of Sicily after a tornado hit the area early Monday, killing seven passengers.
  • British tech tycoon Mike Lynch was identified as one of the bodies pulled from the wreckage. His teenage daughter, Hannah, was the final one to be recovered.
  • Lynch — known as “Britain’s Bill Gates” — had invited guests from Clifford Chance, a legal firm that represented him, and Invoke Capital, his own company, on the voyage,  according to the Telegraph .
  • Security camera footage shot from 650 feet from where the  Bayesian sank Monday  shows it disappearing.
  • A rare and unexpected “black swan” weather event may have led to the  Bayesian’s speedy demise , maritime experts say.

graphic of tragic yacht

Bayesian had 22 people on board — 12 passengers and 10 crew — when it capsized and sank during a storm while anchored off the coast of northern Sicily.

Of those on board, 15 people — including Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares — were rescued after escaping onto a lifeboat.

Rescue divers located Lynch’s teen daughter Friday, the final missing person, the Italian coast guard said.

The bodies of the other dead passengers, including Lynch and New York attorney Christopher Morvillo, were recovered Wednesday and Thursday from inside the hull of the sunken yacht. Those on board were there to help Lynch celebrate his recent acquittal in a major US fraud trial.

Rescue boats search the waters off the coast of Porticello near the Sicilian city of Palermo on Aug. 23, 2024.

Meanwhile, Italian authorities launched a manslaughter investigation into what downed the $40 million yacht after it was struck by an intense storm early Monday, local media reported.

The Prosecutor’s Office of Termini Imerese had started making inquiries and was looking at a slew of offenses — including “shipwreck and multiple counts of culpable homicide against an unknown person,” sources told Palermo Today.

Mystery behind Bayesian yacht tragedy as black swan waterspout is 'only half the story'

Body bags have been taken to shore after expert divers retrieved missing passengers from sunken superyacht the Bayesian. Questions have swirled about how the tragedy unfolded

Bayesian superyacht

  • 09:36, 23 Aug 2024
  • Updated 09:37, 23 Aug 2024

Mystery surrounds the sudden sinking of doomed luxury yacht the Bayesian as Italian police continue their desperate search for Mike Lynch's daughter.

The 183ft superyacht, anchored off the coast of Sicily, had 22 people on board before it was struck by a tornado in the early hours on Monday, which caused it to capsize. Fifteen managed to survive the harrowing ordeal, including business tycoon Mr Lynch's wife, Angela, who is believed to be the owner of the vessel, after a nearby boat acted quickly to rescue them from the water.

One body was recovered from the sea on the day of the tragedy, which was confirmed to be that of Recaldo Thomas , the yacht's chef. Ever since, expert divers worked to locate the six missing passengers and one by one, bodies were taken to the shore after being retrieved from the wreck.

The Italian coastguard on Thursday identified the bodies of five people found on board the sunken £30million, including 59-year-old Mr Lynch - but his 18-year-old daughter Hannah was not among them. Heartfelt tributes have poured out in memory of the billionaire tech tycoon, who was dubbed Britain's Bill Gates.

Morgan Stanley Bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judith Bloomer, lawyer Christopher Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo have also been named by rescue teams. While Hannah tragically remains missing, questions are also left unanswered about how such a magnificent yacht could have quickly failed in a violent storm and how exactly the incident unfolded.

The sinking is being blamed on a freak waterspout, but could more have been done to allow the boat to right itself? Witnesses reported seeing the terrifying tornado-like phenomenon hit the Bayesian superyacht at sea before it went down. Talking to The Times , marine experts told how the horrifying event - dubbed a 'black swan' on account of its rarity - would have battered the £14million boat.

Matthew Schanck, chairman of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, said: "Looking at the extreme weather , if it was a waterspout, which it appears to be, it's what I would class as like a black swan event. And if the waterspout ends up dumping a load of that water on board the vessel, that's going to cause significant damage."

Tornadic waterspouts, which develop downward in a thunderstorm, can either form over water or move from land to water and have the same characteristics as a land tornado, according to the US National Ocean Service. Many storms have swept through Italy in recent days, with floods and landslides causing severe damage in the north of the country after weeks of scorching heat.

The Bayesian was fitted with a 75-metre mast, the world 's second-tallest, which would have made the vessel particularly vulnerable to getting caught up in a fatal waterspout. Dr Peter Inness, a meteorologist at the University of Reading, explained: "The majority of waterspouts are quite weak, resulting in a short burst of gusty winds, which although momentarily quite strong cause little damage because they are over the sea.

"But at the more intense end of the scale, winds of above 100kmh are possible, although actual wind measurements from inside waterspouts are very rare indeed. Winds of this strength coinciding with the location of a boat are capable of causing damage or capsize, especially because the wind direction varies very rapidly within a waterspout which could cause a boat to rock violently."

But one yachting expert, who wished not to be named, raised a similar incident in New Zealand which had a very different outcome, reports MailOnline. Video footage shows a tornado flipping a catamaran in a marina in Auckland in 2019, however a superyacht of similar size and make-up of the Baysian, possessing multiple tiers of metal 'spreaders' from its huge mast, is shown to be flattened by the weather event, before heroically returning to its upright position.

It could be down to the position of the yacht's lifting keel - the main structural backbone of the ship filled with heavy material - which has an impact on the boat's stability. Divers reported that the Bayesian's keel was not fully lowered.

According to state broadcaster, RAI, the keel was lowered to a depth of 4 metres instead of the full 7.5. Dan Green, 51, Research & Investigations lead at eSysman SuperYachts - a team made up of yacht crew who share insights on the vessels - said the combination of the 75m mast and the position of the keel could have caused issues in extreme weather .

"With bare poles (meaning no sails), the wind could have blown against the rig sideways to her anchor position causing the vessel to heal over (or lean) heavily," Dan told the Mirror . Talking about the lifting keel, he added: "When these vessels are at anchor, especially in shallow areas, the keel is lifted to increase the draft (depth) to allow them to anchor or dock in marinas.

"The keel when lowered increases the stability of the vessel. Especially when the yacht is underway using sails, as it counters the effects of the wind trying to push the vessel over. However it increases the draft (depth) of the yacht making it hard to get into some marinas (without hitting the sea bed/marina bottom).

"The lowered keel can increase the yacht's draft (depth) by 100 per cent. So, the keel is designed to be lifted up into the hull of the yacht. This allows them into more shallow water and marinas - however when raised, this reduces stability as the centre of gravity is raised, as the keel is also weighted with lead.

"It has an adverse effect on the stability of the yacht. Another effect of the keel being in the up position is the vessel will not self-right if it leans far over. If you add to that the possibility of hatches being opened on the vessel that would explain why it's saying so quickly."

Had these been closed, which is usually the case when crew set sail, then it could have stopped the 'river of water' that flooded the boat. Similarly, if the keel had been fully extended, the yacht may have had a better chance of stabilising itself.

Meanwhile Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group - the company which built the Bayesian yacht - claimed the model is "unsinkable". He said the boats built at his firm are "safest in the most absolute sense".

"This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact," he told Sky News. An unnamed engineer from the yard which built the yacht is convinced the tragedy cannot entirely be blamed on the freak weather.

Speaking with state television he claimed: "The Bayesian yacht most likely sank due to human error, an unsuitable attitude to the possible arrival of a disturbance." The expert also claimed that although passengers were most likely asleep in their cabins when the violent storm began its attack, crew members could have acted.

"Even with the whirlwind arriving, there was plenty of time. Fifteen minutes would have been enough to activate all the safety measures," he argued. Reports also suggest that the lower dock space, housing the boat's tender - used to ferry passengers and crew ashore - was not fully closed when the boat sank. It is believed members of the party had returned to the yacht from a trip late at night and it has not been confirmed whether this was a crew errand or a passenger transfer.

One expert told RAI: "They had partially pulled up the tender". The Bayesian yacht's captain, New Zealand-born James Cutfield, has already undergone extensive questioning for two hours by police.

On the third day since the yachting trip disaster, a special sub-aqua drone continues to scour the wreck while experts from the fire brigade and police take it in turns to perform the extremely difficult 10-minute dives. The investigation is now in the hands of the Italian authorities and it could take several weeks or months to provide a conclusion to this seemingly unfathomable tragedy.

RFK Jr. says he's suspending 2024 campaign, joins Donald Trump at Arizona rally

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced Friday he is suspending his long-shot campaign for president and instead supporting former President Donald Trump. Trump said he would appoint and create an independent commission to investigate assassination attempts and release all remaining documents about the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

Initial weeks of a Gaza cease-fire deal may see only a dozen living hostages freed

Under the terms of a proposed Gaza cease-fire and hostage release deal, Israel could see only around a dozen captives taken during Hamas' Oct. 7 attack returned home alive during the initial weeks of the agreement, according to several U.S. officials familiar with the ongoing negotiations. The unfavorable return for Israel is viewed by the Biden administration as a major impediment to brokering an end to the conflict, and one of the factors fueling the renewed urgency of its campaign to push talks over the finish line. The White House says negotiations resumed in Egypt this week, but so far mediators have been unsuccessful in their efforts to encourage Hamas to sign onto a bridging proposal that Israel has agreed to which aims to get talks back on track.

How much momentum will RFK Jr.'s endorsement give Trump?

Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced Friday that he had suspended his campaign for the presidency and endorsed former President Donald Trump (though he said he will remain on the ballot in states that are not competitive at the presidential level). Kennedy's bid failed to garner enough support to contend in any state, and support for him in national polls fell by nearly half after President Joe Biden dropped out of the running to be the Democratic Party's nominee. Kennedy, who has consistently polled around 5 percent since Vice President Kamala Harris became the presumptive nominee, was drawing roughly equally from both Trump and Harris, with that support coming from both traditionally Democratic and traditionally Republican groups.

The "Festival of Diversity" was being held throughout the weekend to celebrate Solingen's 650th anniversary, according to the festival's organizers.

2nd former officer charged in Tyre Nichols' death pleads guilty in federal plea deal

A second former Memphis police officer federally charged in connection with the fatal beating of Tyre Nichols has pleaded guilty, weeks before the trial is set to begin, court filings show. Emmitt Martin III is one of five former officers indicted last year on federal civil rights, conspiracy and obstruction offenses in connection with Nichols' death. After initially pleading not guilty to the charges following the indictment, Martin pleaded guilty to two of them during a change of plea hearing in federal court in Memphis Friday afternoon, online court records show.

Popular weight loss drug found to reduce risk of heart complications, study shows

Taking a weight loss drug can also help reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke and cardiac death, new data shows. The study, funded by Novo Nordisk, the maker of Wegovy, looked at over 17,000 people in 41 countries who were over the age of 45 with pre-existing heart disease. Over a span of, on average, 34 months, the people in the study taking Wegovy not only saw their risk of cardiac complications lower but also saw lower blood pressure levels and weight loss greater than people in the placebo group.

2 bodies found in Missouri home leveled by explosion

Two bodies were found in the rubble of a Missouri home that was completely leveled in an explosion early Friday morning. The explosion was so powerful it blew open doors in neighboring houses and could be felt miles away. Nothing was left standing in the house after the explosion, according to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office.

From 'liberal lunatic' to 'respect': How Trump's stance on RFK Jr. has evolved

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced on Friday that he is suspending his independent presidential bid and endorsing Republican candidate former President Donald -- but the two men haven't always gotten along, both hurling insults throughout their campaigns. When Kennedy first signaled plans to jump into the 2024 race, Trump said he felt confident that Kennedy would take votes away from President Joe Biden, labeling him a far-left liberal. Kennedy fired back in an April post on X, criticizing the former president and saying that Trump's rant against him "is a barely coherent barrage of wild and inaccurate claims" and challenged Trump to a debate.

Man charged 34 years after fatal hit-and-run in Charlotte

A man has been identified and charged in a decades-old fatal hit-and-run in Charlotte, North Carolina, police announced Friday. Herbert Stanback, 68, was charged with felony hit-and-run resulting in death in the 1989 killing of 52-year-old Ruth Buchanan, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said. Buchanan was crossing an intersection on Dec. 29, 1989, when she was struck by a vehicle that did not stop at a red light, according to police.

Ohio judge strikes down parts of state's 6-week abortion ban

The Franklin County Court of Common Pleas put a hold on several laws that force abortion patients to wait a minimum of 24 hours after receiving state-mandated information in person before accessing abortion care. According to the ACLU of Ohio, this is the first ruling on the merits of a ballot measure that amended the Ohio constitution to establish "an individual right to one's own reproductive medical treatment, including but not limited to abortion." Much of the ban was rendered unconstitutional after the amendment went into effect in December 2023, Ohio's Attorney General Dave Yost, said earlier this year.

Harris should differentiate herself from Biden, Democrats say. Is that possible?

At Democrats' national convention this week, President Joe Biden was hailed as nothing short of a hero for democracy. Speaker after speaker extolled Biden's decision to end his reelection bid as a selfless act -- an act that happened only after a groundswell of internal pressure helped force his hand after a ruinous June debate. The tightrope won't end with the convention -- Harris will have to run as her own candidate heading a campaign that's being built while in the air after the unprecedented circumstances that birthed it, all while serving as the president's No. 2.

The 5 tragic minutes that sank a superyacht

PORTICELLO, Italy — Survivors of a storm that sank a superyacht off Sicily recounted their ordeal to one of the doctors who rushed to their aid, with some saying it took mere minutes for the 180-foot ship to go down.

Dr. Fabio Genco, head of the Palermo Emergency Medical Services, told NBC News on the phone Thursday that he arrived in the seaside village of Porticello before dawn Monday, about an hour after the $40 million Bayesian sank in the violent and sudden storm.

Of the 22 people onboard, 15 survived despite storm conditions and darkness, climbing onto a lifeboat before being rescued by a nearby sailboat. The crew members have made no public statements so far, though some have been interviewed by investigators.

“They told me that it was all dark, that the yacht hoisted itself up and then went down,” Genco said, recounting what the survivors told him. “All the objects were falling on them. That’s why I immediately made sure, by asking them questions, if they had any internal injuries,” he said.

It appears they had just minutes to abandon the sinking ship, Genco said.

Divers Retrieve Bodies From Tech Tycoon Mike Lynch Yacht Sunk Off Sicily

“They told me that suddenly they found themselves catapulted into the water without even understanding how they had got there,” he said, “And that the whole thing seems to have lasted from 3 to 5 minutes.”

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, which owns Perini Navi, the Bayesian's shipbuilder, told Sky News that there were no flaws with the design or construction of the yacht. He said their structure and keel made boats like that “unsinkable bodies.”

In an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, he disavowed responsibility, blaming instead the actions of the crew. “Mistakes were made,” he said.

Genco said one of his colleagues who arrived at the scene before him initially thought that only three people survived, but the coast guard reported there were other survivors and more emergency services were called in.

When Genco arrived, he found scenes of panic and despair.

“Unfortunately, we are used to such panic scenes because we are used to the shipwrecks that happen on Lampedusa ,” Genco said, referring to the island southwest of Sicily, where the wreckage of boats carrying migrants on the sea journey from North Africa to Italy are often found .

Six of the passengers were declared missing Monday, and by Thursday, the bodies of five had been recovered from the wreck , some 160 feet underwater.

Among those who survived is Angela Bacares, wife of the British tech mogul Mike Lynch , whose body was recovered Thursday.

Divers searching for six missing people following the sinking of a superyacht off Sicily in a storm have found fifth bodies.

Another survivor has been identified as Charlotte Emsley, 35. She told the Italian news agency ANSA that she had momentarily lost hold of her year-old daughter, Sofia, in the water but managed to retrieve her and hold her over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were pulled into safety.

Dr. Domenico Cipolla at the Di Cristina Children’s Hospital in Palermo is also part of a team of medical professionals treating the shipwreck survivors. He told the BBC on Wednesday that Emsley and her daughter, as well as the father of the child, who Cipolla said also survived, are continuing to receive psychological help.

“Psychological support was constant and is constant even today, because basically it is the wounds of the soul that are the most in need of healing in these cases,” Cipolla said.

Genco also told NBC News that he was especially concerned about the child. “She did not understand anything. She was soaking wet and cold,” he said.

Karsten Borner, the Dutch captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, a yacht that was anchored near the Bayesian, said by phone Wednesday that he saw a thunderstorm come in at around 4 a.m. local time (10 p.m. ET) Monday, followed by what looked like a waterspout, a type of tornado that forms over water.

The International Centre for Waterspout Research noted on X that there was a “waterspout outbreak” off Italy on Monday, the day the Bayesian sank.

All the men missing after a luxury yacht sank off Sicily -- who included UK tech tycoon Mike Lynch -- have been found, a coastguard official told.

“I turned on the engine and made maneuvers so that we wouldn’t collide with the Bayesian, which was anchored about 100 meters from us,” Borner said. “Then all of a sudden it disappeared. Then the wind calmed down, we looked around and saw a red flare.”

Borner said he got into his boat’s tender and saw a life raft with 15 people on it. Members of the crew were administering first aid.

“I don’t know why it sank so quickly, but it may have something to do with the mast which was incredibly long,” he said. Questions have been raised about whether the mast was to blame for the accident as tall masts, even with the sails down, have more surface area exposed to the wind, which can contribute to tipping a vessel in a storm.

The CCTV footage that emerged Tuesday showed the yacht’s 250-foot mast, believed to be one of the tallest aluminum sailing masts in the world, lashed by the storm as it appears to tilt to one side before disappearing.

Final Body Is Recovered From Yacht That Sank Off Sicily

Hannah Lynch, the 18-year-old daughter of the British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, was on board a yacht that was hit by a storm and went down in the early hours on Monday.

Emma Bubola reported from Porticello, Italy, and Elisabetta Povoledo from Pallanza, Italy.

For nearly a week after a violent storm sent a luxury yacht to the bottom of the sea off the coast of Sicily, Italian scuba divers plunged deep underwater, moving through ropes and fallen objects inside the yacht in a desperate search for the six people missing.

On Friday, the recovery of the body of Hannah Lynch, 18, put an end to the wrenching search and to the slim hopes that any of the missing people might have survived.

Ms. Lynch, the daughter of the British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, who also died in the yacht’s sinking, was the last person to be formally unaccounted for since Monday after tragedy struck a group that had been celebrating her father’s acquittal in a high-profile fraud case.

There were 10 crew members and 12 passengers on board the 180-foot vessel, the Bayesian, when it was hit by a storm and went down about 4.30 a.m. on Monday, the boat’s management company said on Friday.

Fifteen survived.

The body of the ship’s cook, Recaldo Thomas, was found on Monday, a few hours after a downpour hit the northwestern coast of Sicily, near the port of Porticello, where the yacht had been anchored.

But it took several days to recover the bodies of the six passengers who were apparently trapped inside the yacht: Mr. Lynch and Ms. Lynch; Jonathan Bloomer, the chairman of Morgan Stanley International; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Christopher J. Morvillo, a lawyer at Clifford Chance; and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

On Friday, a round of applause could be heard from the firefighter’s tent set up on the dock in Porticello after the last body was pulled out in what the corps described as a “complex” search operation at a depth of about 165 feet. The firefighters said they had made 123 immersions into the sea to try to retrieve the bodies.

The body bag was then loaded onto an ambulance. A local man had left a small wooden cross on the rocks in front of the dock where the bodies were brought ashore.

Mr. Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, was among those who managed to reach the safety of a raft. They were rescued by a sailing schooner that had been bobbing about 150 yards from the yacht.

In a statement, the family thanked the search teams and said that it was enduring a “time of unspeakable grief.”

“The Lynch family is devastated, in shock and is being comforted and supported by family and friends,” the statement added.

As prosecutors from the nearby city of Termini Imerese began conducting interviews with the survivors and possible witnesses, the crew and passengers of the Bayesian have been confined to a local hotel, where the news media have been denied access.

Salvatore Cocina, the head of Sicily’s civil protection agency, said on Thursday that the survivors had turned down the psychological assistance his department had offered to them.

In Porticello, the sprawling presence of rescue services made a haunting backdrop for an otherwise tranquil port town. People sunbathed and ate ricotta-filled pastries, and stores selling sandals and dried fruit opened as normal, while coast guard and firefighting vessels came and went from the shore, taking scuba divers out to the shipwreck.

Other reminders of the tragedy could be seen along the coast, among palm trees and ice cream shops, with groups of onlookers staring out at the sea, now tranquil and flat.

Local and national news organizations have complained that prosecutors have not issued a statement or held a news conference. Prosecutors may shed more light on the yacht’s sinking when they hold a news conference on Saturday.

The marine accident investigation branch of the British transportation ministry was also looking into the shipwreck of the vessel, which was registered in Britain.

One of the major questions is what caused the boat to sink: Was it the fault of the boat maker, of the crew or of a powerful act of nature — or some combination of the three? None of those who were onboard the Bayesian have spoken publicly.

The luxury yacht, built by the Italian manufacturer Perini Navi and launched in 2008, had the second-tallest aluminum mast in the world, according to its makers.

Giovanni Costantino, the chief executive of the Italian Sea Group, which in 2022 bought Perini Navi, has been assertive in defending the design and construction of the yacht, saying that the Bayesian would be “unsinkable” if the proper procedures were followed.

But yacht design experts have cautioned that the lesson of the Titanic, the ocean liner that sank on its 1912 maiden voyage, showed that no vessel, no matter how robust, was worthy of that label.

Nautilus International, a maritime-focused labor union, criticized any implication that the crew had been at fault, especially at this stage. In a statement , the union’s general secretary, Mark Dickinson, said, “Experience tells us that maritime tragedies are always the result of multiple, interconnected factors,” and he urged people to refrain from drawing any conclusions until a thorough investigation had been carried out.

The investigation into the causes will take months, prosecutors said.

Yacht Sank in Sicily Due to ‘Endless Chain of Errors,' Ship Maker's Owner Speculates: ‘Everything Was Predictable’

"A series of activities should have been done to avoid finding oneself in that situation," argues Giovanni Costantino, who owns the firm that built the vessel in 2008

Giovanni Costantino — who is the CEO of The Italian Sea Group, the company that now owns Perini Navi, which built the  Bayesian  in 2008 — blames an "endless chain of errors" for the luxury yacht’s sinking on Monday, Aug. 19

"Everything was predictable. I have the weather charts in front of me here," Constantino told Italian newspaper  Corriere della Sera  of the storm the boat was caught in

"An unsinkable ship but from the crew an endless chain of errors," the CEO claimed to the outlet

The sinking of the luxury Bayesian  yacht off the coast of Sicily this week  resulted from an "endless chain of errors" by the crew, the ship maker's CEO is speculating.

"This episode sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact," Giovanni Costantino — who leads The Italian Sea Group, the company that now owns Perini Navi, which built the  Bayesian  in 2008 — said,  according to CNN .

While speaking to  Italian newspaper  Corriere della Sera , Costantino said he believes those on board should not have been in their cabins, as he claims they were, when the Bayesian sank in the early hours of Monday, Aug. 19.

Many details of why the yacht went into the water so quickly remain unclear and it's not yet known what the passengers and crew were doing before tragedy struck.

The 183-foot British vessel sank around 5 a.m. local time on Monday after a "violent storm" while near Porticello, the Italian coast guard said in a statement that was previously obtained by PEOPLE.

"Everything that has been done reveals a very long sum of errors. The people should not have been in the cabins, the boat should not have been at anchor. And then why didn't the crew know about the incoming disturbance?" Costantino said in his interview, translated from Italian.

"The passengers reported an absurd thing, namely that the storm came unexpected, suddenly. It's not true. Everything was predictable. I have the weather charts in front of me here. Nothing came suddenly ... Ask yourself, why was no fisherman from Porticello out that night? A fisherman reads the weather conditions and a ship doesn't? The disturbance was fully readable in all the weather charts. One could not not know," he argued.

"An unsinkable ship but from the crew an endless chain of errors," the CEO asserted.

The coast guard has said 22 people were aboard the  Bayesian  when it sank — 12 passengers and 10 crew — and that 15 of those were subsequently rescued.

The body of the yacht's chef, Recaldo Thomas, was recovered nearby.

Costantino's comments came as it was reported that five bodies had been found in the search for the missing six people as of Wednesday, Aug. 21, a source close to the rescue operations confirmed to PEOPLE. Authorities have said that their work is ongoing.

An Italian government official, Massimo Mariani, reportedly named one of the dead as British tech tycoon Mike Lynch . The other bodies have not yet been publicly identified by authorities.

Lynch was celebrating with family and friends on the yacht following his acquittal in a fraud trial in June, PEOPLE previously reported.

Costantino offered his view of how the tragedy could have been avoided: "To begin with, in a weather alert situation it was inappropriate to have, as I read, a party. Not that evening. The hull and deck needed to be secured by closing all doors and hatches, after putting the guests at the ship's meeting point as per emergency procedure. Then start the engines and pull up the anchor or release it automatically, put the bow to the wind and lower the keel.

"The next morning they would have departed with zero damage."

When discussing whether the crew were at fault, Costantino reiterated to the Italian outlet that he believes "errors were made."

"A series of activities should have been done to avoid finding oneself in that situation," he said. "I as the ship's captain would have moved, but even if for some reason I had to stay there, I would have managed those weather conditions which then, let's face it, weren't so crazy."

Costantino contended that there would have been "a zero risk if the correct maneuvers had been made and if situations that compromised the ship's stability had not occurred," adding to the newspaper that reports that the boat went down in seconds is "nonsense." He believes the yacht would have "went down" after water "started to enter" within "six minutes."

The remaining missing  Bayesian  passengers are Lynch's daughter Hannah as well as Chairman of Morgan Stanley International  Jonathan Bloomer, his wife, Judy , and New York City-based lawyer  Christopher Morvillo and his wife, Neda , sources have said.

Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, was among those rescued, PEOPLE previously reported.

Body of British tech magnate Mike Lynch is among those recovered from yacht wreckage, officials say

AP logo

PORTICELLO, Sicily -- The Italian coast guard said Thursday the body of British tech magnate Mike Lynch is among those recovered off the coast of Sicily from the wreckage of a superyacht whose builders had called unsinkable.

One woman remains missing. She has not been identified, but Hannah Lynch, Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, is reportedly unaccounted for. The family had been celebrating his recent acquittal on fraud charges with the people who defended him at trial in the United States.

Five others were recovered by rescue crews following Monday's tragedy.

The Bayesian, a 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged yacht, went down in a storm early Monday as it was moored about a kilometer (half a mile) offshore. Civil protection officials said they believe the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, and sank quickly.

Termini Imerese Public Prosecutor's Office investigators were collecting evidence for a criminal investigation, which they opened immediately after the tragedy despite no formal suspects having been publicly identified.

The chief executive of The Italian Sea Group, which owns the Bayesian's manufacturer, told AP in an interview on Thursday that superyachts like these are "designed to be unsinkable."

"And it is unsinkable not only because it is designed in this way, but also because it is a sailing ship and sailing ships are the safest ever," CEO Giovanni Costantino said.

Costantino added that "obviously they must not hit the rocks violently, discarding the hull, and they must not take in water," suggesting the second possibility was the most likely in this case.

Investigators are now looking at why the Bayesian, built in 2008 by Italian shipyard Perini Navi, sank while a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed. Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived by escaping in a lifeboat, including a mother who reported holding her 1-year-old baby over the waves to save her. They were rescued by the sailboat Sir Robert Baden Powell.

The sailboat's captain, Karsten Borner, said his craft sustained minimal damage - the frame of a sun awning broke - even with winds that he estimated had reached 12 on the Beaufort wind scale, the highest hurricane-strength force on the scale.

He said he had remained anchored with his engines running to try to maintain the ship's position as the forecast storm rolled in.

"Another possibility is to heave anchor before the storm and to run downwind at open sea," Borner said in a text message. But he said that might not have been possible for the Bayesian, given its 75-meter (246-foot) tall mast.

"If there was a stability problem, caused by the extremely tall mast, it would not have been better at open sea," he said.

Yachts like the Bayesian are required to have watertight compartments that are specifically designed to prevent a rapid, catastrophic sinking even when some parts fill with water.

Lynch is the only person confirmed dead; the other bodies have not been formally identified by the Italian coast guard.

Besides Hannah Lynch, those missing are Christopher Morvillo, one of Lynch's U.S. lawyers, and his wife, Neda; Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley's London-based investment banking subsidiary, and his wife, Judy.

The body of chef Recaldo Thomas was the first to be recovered, on Monday. His death was confirmed by his family.

Divers have struggled to find the bodies in the yacht's hull on the seabed 50 meters (164 feet) underwater.

"We would need a crystal ball to know when we'll be able to find the next body," said Luca Cari, spokesperson for the fire rescue service.

"It's very difficult to move inside the wreckage. Moving just one meter can take up to 24 hours," Cari said.

Divers recover 5 bodies from wrecked superyacht off Sicily; 1 still missing

APTOPIX Italy Boaters Missing Italian firefighter scuba divers bring ashore, in the green bag, the body of one of the victims from the British-flagged vessel Bayesian, Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2024. PORTICELLO, Sicily — (AP) — Divers searching the wreck of a superyacht that sank off Sicily found the bodies of five passengers Wednesday, leaving one still missing as questions intensified about why the vessel sank so quickly when a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed.

Rescue crews brought four body bags ashore at Porticello. Salvatore Cocina, head of the Sicily civil protection agency, said a fifth body had been located. Divers on-scene said they would try to recover it on Thursday while continuing the search for the sixth.

The discovery made clear the operation to search the hull on the seabed 50 meters (164 feet) underwater had quickly turned into a recovery one, not a rescue, given the amount of time that had passed and with no signs of life over three days of searching.

The Bayesian, a 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged yacht, went down in a storm early Monday as it was moored about a kilometer (a half-mile) offshore. Civil protection officials said they believed the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout.

Fifteen people escaped in a lifeboat and were rescued by a nearby sailboat. The body of the ship's chef, Recaldo Thomas of Antigua, was recovered Monday.

Thomas was born in Canada, according to his cousin David Isaac, but visited his parents’ homeland of Antigua as a child, and moved permanently to the tiny eastern Caribbean island in his early 20s. Italian officials previously listed Antigua and Canada as the nationality of people on board.

The fate of six missing passengers had driven the search effort, including British tech magnate Mike Lynch , his 18-year-old daughter and associates who had successfully defended him in a recent U.S. federal fraud trial.

Lynch’s spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Termini Imerese Public Prosecutor's Office investigators were acquiring evidence for their criminal investigation, which they opened immediately after the tragedy despite no formal suspects having been publicly identified.

Questions have abounded about what caused the superyacht, built in 2008 by Italian shipyard Perini Navi, to rapidly sink, when the nearby Sir Robert Baden Powell sailboat was largely spared and managed to rescue the survivors.

Giovanni Costantino, head of The Italian Sea Group, which owns the ship maker, blamed human error for the disaster, which he said took 16 minutes. “The ship sank because it took on water. From where, the investigators will say,” he told RAI state television after he met with prosecutors.

Costantino cited AIS ship tracking data which he said showed the Bayesian had taken on water for four minutes when a sudden gust of wind flipped it and it continued taking on water. The ship straightened up slightly and then went down, he said.

But was it merely the case of a freak waterspout that knocked the ship to its side and allowed water to pour in through open hatches? What was the position of the keel, which on a large sailboat like the Bayesian might have been retractable to allow it to enter shallower ports?

“There’s a lot of uncertainty as to whether it had a lifting keel and whether it might have been up,” said Jean-Baptiste Souppez, a fellow of the Royal Institute of Naval Architects and the editor of the Journal of Sailing Technology. “But if it had, then that would reduce the amount of stability that the vessel had, and therefore made it easier for it to roll over on its side,” he said in an interview.

The captain of the sailboat that rescued survivors said his craft sustained minimal damage — the frame of a sun awning broke — even with winds that he estimated reached 12 on the Beaufort wind scale, which is the highest hurricane-strength force on the scale.

He said he had remained anchored with his engines running to try to maintain the ship’s position as the forecast storm rolled in.

“Another possibility is to heave anchor before the storm and to run downwind at open sea,” Karsten Borner said in a text message. But he said that might not have been possible for the Bayesian, given its trademark 75-meter (246-foot) tall mast.

“If there was a stability problem, caused by the extremely tall mast, it would not have been better at open sea,” he said.

Yachts like the Bayesian are required to have watertight, sub-compartments that are specifically designed to prevent a rapid, catastrophic sinking even when some parts fill with water.

The underwater search continued in dangerous and time-consuming conditions. Because of the wreck’s depth, which requires special precautions, divers working in pairs could only spend about 12 minutes at a time searching, though reinforcements outfitted with special equipment to enable longer dives were on the wreck Wednesday.

In all, some 27 divers took rotations, including four who helped with recovery after the 2012 Costa Concordia disaster off Tuscany. They called the Porticello wreck a “little Concordia,” fire crews said in a statement.

The limited dive time was aimed in part at avoiding decompression sickness, also known as the “bends,” which can occur when divers stay underwater for long periods and ascend too quickly, allowing nitrogen gas dissolved in the blood to form bubbles.

“The longer you stay, the slower your ascent has to be,” said Simon Rogerson, the editor of SCUBA magazine. He said the tight turnaround time suggested the operation's managers were trying to limit the risks and recovery time after each dive.

“It sounds like they’re operating essentially on no decompression or very tight decompression, or they’re being extremely conservative,” he said.

Divers were also working with debris floating around them, limited visibility and air tanks on their backs.

“We are trying to advance in tight spaces, but any single thing slows us down,” said Luca Cari, spokesman for the fire rescue service. “An electric panel could set us back for five hours. These aren’t normal conditions. We’re at the limit of possibility.”

Winfield reported from Rome and Kirka from London. Associated Press journalists Trisha Thomas in Rome; Andrea Rosa in Porticello; and Anika Kentish in St. John’s, Antigua, contributed to this report.

This story has been corrected to reflect that Thomas was born in Canada, not Antigua.
