'Our boat is sinking!': Video shows terrifying moments ferry sank in Bahamas, killing 1
A 75-year-old American woman is dead after a double-decker ferry carrying cruise ship passengers to a popular tourist island sank in the Bahamas, local officials said.
The incident took place Tuesday as the boat departed Paradise Island, Nassau, while ferrying tourists to Blue Lagoon Island, a spokesperson with The Royal Bahamas Police Force confirmed to USA TODAY.
The tourist destination is located about three miles northeast of Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas.
Frightening video taken from the scene shows passengers wearing orange life vests around their neck, clinging to one side of the ferry as the vessel sinks into Caribbean turquoise waters.

Police said the ferry left a dock in Paradise Island about 9:30 a.m. with about 100 passengers on board, the Nassau Guardian reported.
"The vessel experienced rough seas in the area, which resulted in the boat taking on water and becoming submerged in waters just outside of Blue Lagoon," police chief Superintendent Chrislyn Skippings told the outlet.
Police reported a 75-year-old woman from Colorado died in the incident, according to the outlet.
Her identity and cause of death were not immediately known.

Passengers were reportedly all from a cruise ship
According to a statement released online from Blue Lagoon Island, the passengers on board the ferry were from a cruise ship.
The accident took place as the vessel was approaching Blue Lagoon Island, the statement said and emergency teams from the island "quickly arrived to render assistance."
“Passengers and five staff members were located and brought to the island, and two passengers were taken to the hospital for additional care," the statement continues.

'Our boat is sinking'
"Out boat is sinking," Kelly Schissel, an American tourist on board the vessel, is heard saying in a TikTok video she filmed as the boat took on water. "Everybody is freaking out."
Chaos and screaming is heard in the background of the video which shows people with life jackets around their necks, some leaning over the boat looking into the water watching in horror as it sinks.
"I'm on the top floor of a ferry," Schissel says as she continued to film, the boat seen tipped on its side into choppy waters.
At one point, people are seen jumping off what appears to be the back of the boat into the water as others on board continue to shout.
About a half dozen people in the shot are seen swimming towards another boat stopped a short distance from the ferry.
"We were almost there... we weren't actually that close to shore it just kind of looked like it," Schissel said in a follow up video on TikTok shot after she made it to land.
She said when water began pouring into the boat, many passengers were waiting for instruction from crew members, but they reportedly did not give any.
So when they saw someone jump into the rough water, she said, they followed in suit with life jackets and swam to a nearby boat until other boats arrived to help in the rescue effort.
The conditions of those transported to the hospital were not immediately known Wednesday.
In addition to local authorities, according to the Blue Lagoon statement, the island alerted the cruise ship and the U.S.Embassy about the accident.
The statement said the organization would release more details as they become available

Warning: This article contains content some readers may find upsetting
Footage has captured the harrowing moment a tourist boat sunk whilst ferrying luxury cruise ship passengers across the sea
On Tuesday (14 November) a double-decker catamaran was carrying holidaymakers to the private Blue Lagoon Island from the Bahamas’ Paradise Island.
However, the vessel began to take on water after encountering rough waves and eventually capsized in the Caribbean Sea.
You can watch the tragic footage below:
Police confirmed on Wednesday that a woman died after the boat carrying more than 100 people sank on Tuesday 14 November.
Chief Superintendent Chrislyn Skippings told The Associated Press that the unidentified 74-year-old woman was from Broomfield, Colorado and was on a five-day vacation with her family when the cruiser sank.
Police said that the woman was found unresponsive and was later given CPR before being declared dead.
As per ABC7 , police said two other unidentified people were taken to a medical facility. However, their conditions were not immediately known.
One TikTok user posted a video of the sinking on her profile, and wrote in the caption: “Our ferry capsized while going to Blue Lagoon. Absolutely traumatising.
“We were on the bottom level and had to climb out of a window while being almost vertical… So scary trying to save my parents, babies, children and elderly people from downing.”
Elsewhere, a Facebook user who was also onboard the vessel said: ”We drove into a wave and too much water came into the front of the boat and it weighed the boat down and it just kept sinking.”
Officials said that the Royal Bahamas Defence Force also helped with the rescue, as well as nearby pleasure craft.
A statement from Blue Lagoon Island said that all passengers onboard were cruise ship guests and that local authorities, the ship and the US Embassy had been notified of the tragic events.
Following the death of the Colorado woman, a spokesperson for Royal Caribbean said: "We are saddened to hear that one of our guests passed away following an accident on a shore excursion in Nassau, The Bahamas.
"Our hearts are with the families involved and our Care Team has been activated to support them during this difficult time.”
The vessel involved in the incident was not owned by Royal Caribbean or linked to their shore excursions.
It is not known whether tourists from other cruise boats were on the catamaran at the time of its sinking.
The investigation is ongoing.

74-year-old Colorado woman dies after Bahamas boat transporting tourists began sinking
A 74-year-old woman from Colorado died in the Bahamas this week after a boat transporting tourists started to sink, local police said.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force was notified of a distressed double-deck catamaran taking on water just before 11 a.m. ET Tuesday. The boat was transporting tourists from Paradise Island to Blue Lagoon Island, a private island and popular tourist destination, police said in a release.
Police marine support units and the Royal Bahamas Defense Force responded and helped rescue the passengers and crew members “from the visibly sinking vessel,” the release said.
A woman who was “unresponsive” was retrieved from the water, and CPR was performed. She was taken to the Paradise Island Dock, where EMTs found “no signs of life.”
The woman, who was not publicly identified, was described as being from Broomfield, Colorado.
Two additional passengers were taken to a medical facility in New Providence for further care.
A video on TikTok showed a two-deck ferry with "Blue Lagoon Island" painted on it sinking sideways. Another, aboard the sinking vessel, showed dozens of passengers in apparent alarm. In the water, some passengers in vests are seen swimming toward a nearby small boat.
An investigation continues.

The double-decker ferry was almost at its island destination but not near land when it started to capsize.
About 100 passengers were on board the catamaran when it hit rough seas, according to The Associated Press . There had been a small craft advisory at the time.
Blue Lagoon Island is about three miles northeast of Nassau, according to USA Today .
One of the passengers on board recorded the boat going down with other passengers screaming and jumping into the water as the boat tilted.
Kelly Schissel shared the video on TikTok , later saying she thought the captain was trying to be “silly” by bringing the stern of the boat around quickly, Fox News reported.
The video , which has more than 19 million views, contains profanity.
Schissel had been on the top deck and said when she looked down after hearing people “freaking out a little bit” she noticed water coming onto the vessel.
Schissel said passengers were not the only ones worried about what was happening.
“One of the crew members that was downstairs ran upstairs and was crying, freaking out, absolutely bawling, grabbing a life jacket,” she said, according to Fox News, adding that crew didn’t tell the passengers what to do because they were panicking themselves.
Sarah Plourde was also on the boat, confirming that the first deck was filled with water and that she and others had to climb out a window. They were scared to leave the sinking watercraft because, “The captain wouldn’t turn the engines off, so we were scared to swim out the back due to the propeller,” she told Storyful.
Still, people did jump in and were eventually rescued by several boats. She and the other passengers on the boat as part of a planned excursion with their cruise ship were offered shirts, shoes, and food on Blue Lagoon Island before being taken back to the ship, Fox News and the Nassau Guardian reported.
One woman in her 70s from Broomfield, Colorado, was found “unresponsive” in the water, according to Bahamian officials. She was taken from the water and CPR was performed before she was taken to Paradise Island Dock where EMTs found “no signs of life,” NBC News reported.
Her cause of death has not been released, according to the Guardian .
A spokesperson for Royal Caribbean confirmed to WTVJ that she had been a passenger on their ships and was on a shore excursion.
“We are saddened to hear that one of our guests passed away following an accident on a shore excursion in Nassau, Bahamas,” the spokesperson told WTVJ in a statement. “Our hearts are with the families involved and our Care Team has been activated to support them during this difficult time.”
Two other people were taken to a hospital in New Providence. Their names and where they are from were not released.
An investigation is ongoing, the AP reported.

Royal Caribbean Halts Blue Lagoon Tours After Accident
- November 16, 2023
Royal Caribbean has halted Blue Lagoon Island shore excursions in Nassau, Bahamas, following the death of an elderly American guest in a boat capsizing incident.
The company temporarily suspended the popular tour on Wednesday, pending further investigation and safety reviews.
Cancelled through November 23
In a notice to guests booked on future excursions, the cruise line said, “We’re currently working with authorities to during a shore excursion. In light of this incident, we have decided to cancel all Blue Lagoon tours through November 23, including your Blue Lagoon Island Deluxe Beach Break.” “We’re sorry for any inconvenience caused by this. Please know your safety is our top priority.” |
Royal Caribbean has processed full refunds for all guests with affected shore excursion bookings.
Details on the Blue Lagoon Accident
The Royal Bahamas Defense Force said the vessel, operated by Blue Lagoon Island, began taking on water after being hit by waves. It started to list dramatically, and passengers were told to quickly move up to the upper deck and put on life jackets.
Video footage showed passengers forced to jump into the water. Luckily, the boat wasn’t completely submerged due to the shallow water. The double-deck pleasure craft was carrying more than 100 people.

Search suspended after young brit falls off royal caribbean cruise ship near croatia.
Rescue crews suspended their search efforts Sunday for a young British man who fell off a Royal Caribbean cruise ship in the waters near Croatia early Friday morning.
The passenger, who has not been publicly identified, fell overboard into the Adriatic Sea while traveling on the cruise line’s Explorer of the Seas in the early morning hours, according to local Croatian news outlets.
The man plunged nearly 100 feet off the ship into waters near the uninhabited island of Jabuka, the local news station 24 SATA reported .
Royal Caribbean crew members who witnessed the man’s fall immediately tossed over a life ring but could not see him in the water, according to the station.
A massive multi-agency search — spearheaded by the National Center for Coordination of Search and Rescue at Sea — was launched from both sea and air and continued over the weekend.
The rescuers were hopeful that if the Brit survived the fall, he would be able to survive in the warmer waters of the Adriatic Sea during this time of year.
“Survival in these conditions is more than 12 hours, and the search lasts twice as long, at least 24 hours,” Radovan Linić, the coordinator of the search and rescue agency, told 24 SATA in Croatian.
But after three days of searching, the rescue teams were unable to locate the missing man and officially called off the search at around 2 p.m. Sunday, Croatian outlet HRT reported.
The seven-day Royal Caribbean cruise from Greece was headed to Zadar when the man tumbled into the sea.
Another passenger aboard the cruise ship said she was awakened by an emergency message blasting “Oscar Oscar Oscar off the port side. Man overboard” at around 3:40 a.m., she shared on X .
The ship canceled its docking in Zadar but continued on its path after hours of searching when the Croatian coast guard took over the immediate search, Nicole Bullock wrote.
The Post has reached out to Royal Caribbean for comment.
In May, a man reportedly jumped from Royal Caribbran’s Icon of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship, on the first night of his week-long voyage soon after it left Florida. His body was recovered, and he was pronounced dead.
A month before, a 20-year-old man believed to be drunk allegedly jumped off Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas as it sailed between Cuba and the Bahamas while on a vacation with his family.

Two passengers were killed and 16 were injured when a tourist boat capsized at sea after being bashed by a huge wave.
The authorities said 22 passengers were onboard the tourist boat when it capsized on the morning of 5 March, Jam Press reports.
A huge wave caused the vessel to overturn, leaving passengers stranded in the middle of the Caribbean Sea, some 21 miles from the coast of Colombia.
After rescuing all the passengers from the water, the captain of the tour boat noticed there were two women missing.
The victim’s lifeless bodies were found underneath the overturned vessel minutes later.
According to reports, 16 other tourists were injured in the incident off the coast of Santa Marta, Magdalena Department, Colombia.
After the boat capsized, a boat from the Santa Marta Sports Fishing Club was passing through the waters of the Tayrona National Park at the time.
Crew members heard the screams of people in the sea and rushed to help fish them out of the water.
Footage shows crew members helping survivors onboard the fishing boat.
Fisherman Jader Fontalvo said: “We heard the cries for help and I immediately told the captain to move closer.
“However, our boat was not very big so we could only go up to 10 people.”
Coast Guard officials promptly arrived on the scene to help transport the other tourists to safety.
It was initially believed that everyone had survived the incident, but when everyone was onboard the rescue vessels, the tour boat captain realised the two women were missing.
Minutes later, their dead bodies were found underneath the overturned boat.
The mayor’s office confirmed that the other tourists were all treated at nearby medical centres and are in good general condition.
An investigation into the fatal accident is ongoing.

Horrible way to die - nearly happened to about 18yrs ago
The passenger who died was returning from a Royal Caribbean shore excursion called Passion Island Escape. We were on the catamaran as well and were disembarking when it happened. Didn't see how he ended up in the water but saw 2 passengers trying to pull him out by his arms, there were not able to because he was entangled in the propulsion unit. He was conscious and looking up but not speaking. There was massive blood loss very quickly into the water around the pier. It was very tragic.
Oh how horrible!! :( :( :(
My heart felt sorrow to his family and freinds. Also to you and all around.
This is so very sad. My prayers are for him and his family and friends.

My feelings, exactly. Very very sad....................
Very sad and sorry...
Ok, I am getting more scared every time I read this stuff. We were going to book this excursion for Jan.
So did the man fall trying to get off the catamaran?
here's the original thread regarding this tragic accident:

Why has this thread moved from being a sticky at the top of the page into the main forum when there is alread a very long thread on this, together with first-hand accounts.

It was a very tragic accident, but don't let it ruin your vacation plans. It does not mean the excursion is unsafe.
Good question. I wonder if Laura meant to combine them.
