Review of S2 7.3 SD

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The boat equipped with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

The S2 7.3 SD is equipped with a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 0.86 - 0.96 meter (2.82 - 3.12 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for S2 7.3 SD is 2.16, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 5.8 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for S2 7.3 SD is about 92 kg/cm, alternatively 516 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 92 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 516 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 14m 2 (150 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

The company, located in Holland, Michigan, USA, was founded by boating industry legend, Leon Slikkers, after he had sold his powerboat company, Slickcraft. As part of the sales agreement, he was precluded from the powerboat market for a number of years. There were no restrictions on sailboat building. So he built a new plant which was, at the time, a model for production-line efficiency and strict quality control. In the late 1970s, S2 did start building powerboats again, and soon established its Tiara line. Slikkers was later able to buy back his old powerboat line, Slickercraft. Production of sailboats ended in 1989.

S2 7.3 Wet Keel ?

Mike Palmer

Has anyone heard of a wet keel on an S2 7.3 ? I am looking into purchase and the picture of the bildge was wet. He said it was hallow with a wet keel and it could be pumped out when you want less? He also described that the keel was moulded in and no keel bolts? I have an S2 8.0 shoal draft so I have nothing to go on. Thank you for any input.

BobM

Most cruising s2 boats have an integral keel with a deep sump aft. No keel bolts required.

Never heard anyone call it a wet keel. Ballast is usually lead shot or scrap encased in resin.

heritage

I had a 7.3 in the early 90s and was astounded that in the bottom of the tiny bilge there was still some dry sawdust from the interior construction. Water had never been in that bilge. And there are no keel bolts. The water that you are seeing hopefully came from above. If not, a severe grounding could allow water to enter the keel cavity. Even then, there would need to be a crack between the cavity and the bilge.

As Heritage stated. The nice thing about an integral keel is no keel bolts. The downside is that a grounding can damage the fiberglass. Water can get into the ballast. In a worst case freezing can further damage keel integrity. I had to fix keel damage twice, but in both cases i suspect it happened in the yard...a suspicion further confirmed yesterday when i observed my boat hauled. They place the boat on a trailer with hydraulic pads, but the keel sits on a crossbar they put a block of wood on. I watched the owner stop them from placing the keel too far forward on the crossbar...right where i have seen damage twice...once on each side. Easy to fix...but who needs the extra work.

S2 7.3 for Sail

  • Add to quote

Excellent boat for coastal cruising, day sailing and racing! S2 Yachts has a great reputation for making solid, safe and fast sailboats. The 7.3 is a 24-foot "cruising" model with a large cockpit, numerous big-boat features and a comfortable cabin that sleeps four. "Sweet Freedom" is a well-engineered boat with a roller-furling jib and all lines led aft into the cockpit, making it easy for one or two people to handle. She has a deep keel (with a four-foot draft) that makes her very stable even in strong winds and large waves, and enables her to sail upwind fast. This boat is fully-loaded with everything you need for coastal cruising, including: · Fully-battened mainsail with jiffy reefing · Roller-furling genoa · Asymmetrical cruising spinnaker and whisker pole · An extra mainsail and genoa · A spinnaker halyard and all running rigging · Cockpit cushions, bimini and dodger · Dock lines and fenders · Anchor, anchor line and a swim ladder · Life jackets, horseshoe buoy and throwable cushions · Flares, horn and all safety equipment · A two-battery electrical system with: · VHF, AM/FM cassette · Cabin lights and running lights · Ventilation fans · A small head with a holding tank · A small galley with a hand-pump sink, 15-gallon water tank and alcohol stove · A 9.9-hp outboard engine with electric start Sweet Freedom also has a heavy-duty, custom trailer (valued at about $2,000) with tandem axles and very good tires that tows well. The trailer has a slippery plastic board under the keel, along with pivoting roller arms (see pic), that allows the boat to eaily slide off the trailer. The trailer does not have an extension, but I have launched it numerous times on standard boat ramps with a two-wheel drive pick-up. Also included in the price is an 8-foot hard-shell dinghy that is almost new, and is a joy to row or tow behind the boat. Sweet Freedom was sailed exclusively in freshwater until this year, when I moved her Oriental, NC, the Sailing Capital of the Carolinas. Like most older boats, Sweet Freedom needs a few minor repairs, such as fiberglass and wood-work touch-up, and will soon need a few upgrades, such as a new outboard engine. (That's why I have listed her much lower than her $8,000 value!) I have owned Sweet Freedom for nine years, and enjoyed every minute. I am only selling her because I have recently started a business that I need to focus my attention on. Price reduced from $10,000 to $6,900! Contact Joel Broadway at [email protected]
