Titan sub hearing latest: Titan an 'abomination of a sub'; OceanGate chief 'threw controller at director's head after crash'

Five people, including two prominent British businessmen, died when their sub exploring the Titanic imploded underwater last year. Employees of OceanGate, Titan's owner, are giving evidence to a hearing. Watch the stream below to follow it live.

That's the end of David Lochridge's evidence now, so the hearing has adjourned.

There are no proceedings tomorrow but it will be back on Thursday. 

The board has now wrapped up its questioning but former OceanGate employee David Lochridge says he wants to make a statement to the hearing. 

He says he wants to find out why the US safety agency OSHA did not "effectively" address his concerns about the Titan sub. 

It was "especially troubling" that he did not receive help while under the whistleblower protection scheme, he says. 

OSHA "failed not only my family financially and emotionally, but stood by and did nothing to prevent further acts of retaliation from OceanGate", he says. 

"If it had attempted to investigate, this tragedy may have been prevented." 

He says he feels "deeply let down and disappointed by the system" and now hopes "no other family will have to endure a similar tragedy in the future".

Former OceanGate employee David Lochridge recalls an incident with founder Stockton Rush. 

He says Mr Rush was showing board members around the workshop, and Mr Lochridge himself was about to start doing an annual inspection of another submersible. 

The former marine operations director says he had the emergency life support items out on tables, including food, water and safety equipment. 

This equipment allows the crew of a submersible to stay underwater in the event of an emergency for a lengthy period of time, he says. 

"That day Stockton was on one, as usual," he says. "He walked past me with all these big wigs and stated 'we're using not any of this in Titan'." 

Mr Rush allegedly described the emergency life support as a "complete waste of money". 

Mr Lochridge says he then told his boss that he would not go down in Titan if the equipment were not included. 

He says he believes the founder was "showing off in front of some of the board". 

The former employee describes Mr Rush as a "control freak", adding: "It was his way or not at all."

David Lochridge is asked whether the Titan was an "experimental manned submersible". 

"Yeah, but it was an experimental submersible that they [OceanGate] had already taken deposits to go to the Titanic in," he replies. 

Asked whether he had concerns about it taking passengers unfamiliar with submersibles, he says he was "very concerned" and "didn't agree with it".

Former OceanGate marine operations director David Lochridge is now asked whether companies should be required to provide a certain level of training to submersible pilots. 

He says proper training is "imperative". 

"I know [OceanGate founder] Stockton's vision was give somebody this PlayStation controller and within an hour they're going to be a pilot. That's not how it works," he says.

"It's like showing somebody how to fly a helicopter and then them taking passengers up." 

He says his own training to be a pilot was "very in-depth" and took years. 

However he says there are other companies that do their own training courses and he hasn't gone over their training manuals to be able to say whether they are sufficient. 

Former OceanGate operations director David Lochridge says that by November 2018, he had decided to drop his claim and lawsuit against the company. 

He and his wife "decided it was going nowhere and it was causing more hurt for us" as well as costing them financially, he says. 

They walked away from the lawsuits as it was "too much for us as a family", he says. 

That month, the safety agency Mr Lochridge had raised his claim with sent a settlement and release agreement to OceanGate. 

He says he "never paid a penny" to the company but had to sign a non-disclosure agreement, or NDA, preventing him from talking about the company. 

The former employee says he is glad he has been subpoenaed for the hearing so he can talk about the issues he had raised. 

David Lochridge says that eight months after he was fired from OceanGate, he followed up again with the US safety agency for an update. 

He paints a picture of struggling to get any progress and feeling worried about what his former company was doing. 

He tells the hearing that he'd emailed safety agency OSHA to say he was "extremely concerned" about OceanGate's use of the Titan submersible, particularly due to the vessel's view port. 

The manufacturer of the view port would only build and certify OceanGate's design to a depth of 1,000 metres. 

He says he told OSHA that OceanGate was planning to take the sub "to 4,000 metres with passengers who are unaware of this". 

The manufacturer had also raised concerns and said it could build a view port certified to 4,000 metres but OceanGate refused, Mr Lochridge says. 

He says the response he got from OSHA was that it had "not started actively investigating" the complaint as it still had several other older complaints to finish up first. 

"They were my point of contact and did nothing," Mr Lochridge says.

The hearing is continuing to delve into David Lochridge's whistleblower complaint he raised with a US safety agency. 

After he says he was threatened by OceanGate's lawyers, he says he "never once got any correspondence" from lawyers for safety agency OSHA. 

He decided to proceed with the claim as he felt it was a case of "public safety". 

Mr Lochridge says he did not speak to any other agencies or media at this time. 

The former OceanGate employee says he was "under the assumption I would be protected". 

He was worried as the Titan sub was now "down at the harbour and going through trials". 

Despite being under whistleblower protection, Mr Lochridge says OceanGate then served a lawsuit against him and his wife. 

He says when he contacted OSHA again, he was told there were 11 cases ahead of him.

Maine lobstermen credited with saving lives of boaters following yacht fire.

Several lobstermen are credited with saving the lives of two boaters off the coast of Georgetown on Saturday.

The 48-foot yacht Titan caught fire several miles off Seguin Island, with flames quickly spreading, prompting the boaters to jump into the water for safety.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard Lt. David J. Letarte, the agency issued an Urgent Mariner Information Broadcast after the boaters called for help reporting their vessel was disabled, and fire was coming from the engine room.

Letarte was able to identify one of the lobster boats involved in pulling the boaters to safety as "My Three Blondes" but added there were vessels involved in the effort.

"We credit them in this case as saving some lives," Letarte said.

The boaters were taken to shore and are ok.

On board one of the other nearby vessels that responded was Deb Kremer, who heard calls for help over the radio.

"The boat was fully engulfed, and burned like that for approximately 40 minutes before sinking," Kremer wrote in an email to Maine's Total Coverage.

The yacht sank in about 200 feet of water, according to the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard says it is unclear how the fire started.

TITAN Yacht – Extravagant $100M Superyacht

Reymond Langton Design penned both the interior and exterior features of the fantastic superyacht and Abeking & Rasmussen built her.

She was delivered from their Lemwerder shipyard in 2010, along with two sister ships, Eminence and C2, which are privately owned pleasure yachts. TITAN is used personally by the owner.

The TITAN yacht features interior design from British yacht designer Reymond Langton Design .

The interior details of the TITAN yacht remain private, but Reymond Langton Design is known for its beautiful and functional designs.

She has accommodation for 14 guests on board in 7 suites. There is also accommodation for 19 crew members on board the 80m superyacht.

She has a beach club for a perfect indoor/outdoor for guests to enjoy on the water level.

There is an on-deck Jacuzzi for relaxation and a gym for guests to use. There is also a movie theater that guests can relax in after a day on the water.

TITAN features a unique Abeking & Rasmussen feature with a large transom hatch to load and launch the tenders from the large interior garage.

The exterior of the TITAN yacht was also designed by Reymond Langton Design and built by the German shipyard Abeking & Rasmussen.

The shipyard’s in-house design team penned the naval architecture. She was delivered from the Lemwerder shipyard in 2010 and refitted in 2021.

The hull of the TITAN yacht is grey with a white aluminum superstructure. TITAN has a modern and powerful exterior on the water.

Specifications

The TITAN yacht is a 78.43m yacht with a 12.6m beam and a 3.4m draft. She has a displacement of 2115 gross tons and a top speed of 17 knots.

Her two Caterpillar engines give her a cruising speed of 13 knots and a range of 6000 nautical miles.

She has at-anchor stabilizers to provide exceptional comfort levels for guests. The $100 million vessel has an annual running cost of $5 – $10 million. She was built to Lloyd’s Society Rules and MCA standards.

The TITAN yacht is a privately owned yacht that is not available for charter. However, her sister ship Eminence is a charter yacht.

The owner was born in Krasnodar, Russia, USSR, and is of Jewish descent. He attended The Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, graduating with a degree in physics and mathematics in 1982.

Before beginning his business ventures, he first worked for Russia’s space and defense program as a scientist.

Government funding declined for the space program, and so he became a major businessman in Russia. 

Before the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, he ran a laboratory at the Joint Institute of High-Pressure Temperatures, studying high energy densities and shock wave physics and applied electrodynamics.

Abramov leaped into business when the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991 and founded his first firm in 1992 that imported and sold fitness equipment.

Later, he joined former classmates to create EvrazMetall, an exporter of Russian steel. This precursor enterprise of Evraz Holding made him a fortune by exporting metals and coals from the Urals and Siberia.

Between 2001 and 2003, Abramov and his partners acquired three steel plants Nizhny Tagil Iron and Steel Plant, West Siberian Iron and Steel Plant, and Novokuznetsk Iron and Steel Plant.

These three plants were the foundation for Evraz, which now has iron ore, coal mining, and steel manufacturing operations. The partners sold shares in Evraz on the London Stock Exchange in 2005 for $400 million.

A year later, the partners sold 41% of the company to billionaire Roman Abramovich, pocketing $3 billion.

There are ten partners in Evraz. Abramov has a 29% stake in the country and is a director alongside Alexander Frolov.

Abramov used the process to invest in gold, forestry, and mobile internet services. In 2013, Abramov and Abramovich teamed up again to buy a 5.9% stake in Norilsk Nickel, the world’s second-largest nickel producer.

Abramov and partners sold a 24.5% stake in Trans Container for $436 million. The company is Russia’s largest railway container operator.

Super yacht Titan is the third yacht in the 78m series, launched by Abeking & Rasmussen of Germany. With naval architecture by the yard's in-house team, the striking Titan yacht has her exterior styling created by Reymond Langton, who also designed the two other superyachts in the 78m series.

Superyacht TITAN has a grey hull, built from steel, with a white superstructure which was constructed in aluminium. Unlike her sister-ships luxury yacht Titan has some minor customisation in the profile look of her sundeck and radar mast areas. Titan can also be distinguished with her large doors which have been positioned on the side part of the forward full beam area. These doors are likely to be for water toy and tender side garages. Abeking are known for designing and building very large transom hatches on their modern motor yachts as they operate two well proven tender launching systems actually developed by A&R. This allows the yacht to employ smooth launching and recovering of the ship tender even whilst under way, or when approaching a anchorage or harbour.
