The America’s Cup, the world’s oldest international sporting trophy, returns this year for its 37th edition.

First contested in 1851, the a 183-year-old sporting challenge has become one of the most highly-anticipated sailing events on the calendar, with fast-paced racing and engineering at the fore of its appeal.

After winning the previous America’s Cup in 2021, Emirates Team New Zealand dictated the location and sections of the rules of engagement for this year’s competition, which will be held in Barcelona.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the 2024 America’s Cup ahead what promises to be a thrilling preliminary regatta, starting Thursday night (AEST).

The America’s Cup and the Challenger Selection Series, this year called the Louis Vuitton Cup, is comprised of head-to-head match races where two boats sail against each other.

Emirates Team New Zealand, known as the Defender having won the previous competition, earned immediate qualification for the America’s Cup match, while their opponent will be determined in the Louis Vuitton Cup, which runs from August 29 to October 7.

The Louis Vuitton Cup winner will be decided after a series of round robins, semi-finals and finals, with five boats competing this year.

The America’s Cup match, contested between the Defender and a challenging vessel, is a best-of-13 series with one point awarded for each victory. The first team to win seven points is declared champions, becoming the Defender of the 38th America’s Cup.

Each competing vessel must be designed and built solely in the country that it represents, while this year marks the first time a New Zealand team has chosen to defend an America’s Cup win overseas.

PRELIMINARY REGATTA

Before the Louis Vuitton Cup gets underway, the six boats will compete in their new AC75s at the third and final Preliminary Regatta in Barcelona.

Points won at the Preliminary Regatta do not count towards progression or elimination, but it gives the teams an opportunity to get a glimpse at the competition before the Louis Vuitton Cup.

The Preliminary Regatta gets underway in Barcelona on Thursday, running through to Sunday.

August 21: Preliminary Regatta Practice day

August 22-25: Barcelona Preliminary Regatta

August 29 – September 8: Louis Vuitton Cup Round Robins 1 & 2

September 14-19: Louis Vuitton Cup Semifinals

September 26 – October 7: Louis Vuitton Cup Finals

October 12-27: The America’s Cup

HOW TO WATCH

Every race in the Louis Vuitton Cup and America’s Cup will be shown live on Fox Sports and streaming platform Kayo Sports.

Coverage gets underway this Thursday at 10pm AEST.

The AC75s, an innovative 75-foot foiling monohull first introduced at the 36th America’s Cup in Auckland in 2021, will return this year for their second outing albeit with considerable tweaks and improvement.s.

“When you look at the boat now, the boat that we’re going to be launching soon (compared) to what we had last time, to us, is a big step on,” Emirates Team New Zealand’s chief operating officer Kevin Shoebridge said.

“There’s a lot of stuff from the outside that you’ll never see – the control systems and everything, the technique and how you sail the boat – a lot of that stuff you won’t see, but to us there’s been some big steps forward.

“I would expect all the boats are going to be a big step forward, and who knows? What typically happens with these rules is when you go from one iteration to the next, slowly they all start to merge together. So, they may look similar.”

RULE CHANGES

There are slight changes to the boat regulations this year, with crew numbers reduced from 11 to eight on the foiling monohulls.

To reduce costs, teams will only be permitted to build one AC75 for the America’s Cup, while national rules have become more strict — 100 per cent of the race crew for each competitor has to be a passport holder of the country of the team’s yacht club, or have been physically present in that country for 18 months between March 2018 and March 2021.

That’s the case for Australian sailing great Tom Slingsby, who will feature as part of the American Magic team having previously hlelped Oracle Team USA to America’s Cup glory.

STARS & STRIPES Successful Challenger of the 26th America's Cup

america's cup rc sailboat

Following his defeat, Dennis Conner is dropped by the New York Yacht Club, but mounts his own challenge under his home San Diego Yacht Club, called the Sail America Foundation For International Understanding.

It proves to be the most professional, consumate program the America's Cup has ever seen. Five boats are involved, the 'old' Spirit of America (1982) partially rebuilt and re-named Stars & Stripes '83, Liberty (1983) as yardstick and three new 12-metres.  The first one is Stars & Stripes '85, followed by a new faster radical hull. Stars & Stripes'86, built to take advantage of heavy seas and the strong winds expected in Fremantle. All the research and tests go into the final boat, Stars & Stripes '87.

The three new Stars & Stripes are shipped to Fremantle. The match between the three boats is even, but finally Stars & Stripes '87 is chosen to race the 1986-87 Louis Vuitton Cup.

The Vuitton Cup starts off Fremantle on October 5, 1986.  There are 13 challenger candidates: American Eagle, Heart of America, America II, USA, Courageous IV, Stars & Stripes, Canada II, Azzurrra IV, Italia, White Crusader, Challenge France, French Kiss and New Zealand.

The Louis Vuitton Cup semi-finals are sailed from December 28, 1986 to January 2, 1987, with New Zealand and French Kiss on one side, and USA against Stars & Stripes on the other. Stars & Stripes beats USA in four close matches. The Louis Vuitton Cup final is sailed from January 13 to 19 between New Zealand and Stars & Stripes. Stars & Stripes '87 beats New Zealand by four wins to one. By winning the Louis Vuitton Cup, Dennis Conner is selected with his 12-metre as the official challenger of the 26th America's Cup.

ALINGHI RED BULL RACING SUFFERS MAST FAILURE AHEAD OF THE LOUIS VUITTON PRELIMINARY REGATTA

image1

Whilst training ahead of the Louis Vuitton Preliminary Regatta that starts on Thursday August 22, Alinghi Red Bull Racing suffered a rig failure onboard ‘BoatOne.’

america's cup rc sailboat

In a statement released on social media, Silvio Arrivabene, Co-General Manager of Alinghi Red Bull Racing confirmed that all the team members were safe and the boat had been safely returned to their dock in the Port Vell under tow: “Today there was a rig failure during the early stage of training on BoatOne. Everybody onboard is safe, and an investigation will be carried out in due course. In the meantime, the team remains fully focused on racing.”

This is the second rig failure that the Swiss team have had to endure with a breakage occurring on 13 June whilst in training.

Conditions today saw a southerly breeze coming down the Barceloneta beachfront with a mean of 12 knots and a calm sea state – according to Predict Wind.

The fact that Alinghi Red Bull Racing ‘remains fully focussed on racing’ is a good indicator that the team have a contingency plan in place and the entire community of the Louis Vuitton 37 th America’s Cup wishes the Swiss team a speedy return to action.

Alinghi Red Bull Racing are scheduled to feature in the first race of the Louis Vuitton Preliminary Regatta against Orient Express Racing Team on Thursday August 22 at 14:00 CET.

37th America’s Cup: Key Info, Dates & How to Watch

INEOS

The 37th America’s Cup is here! Here’s all the key info, dates and how to watch the racing online, for free!

The 37th america’s cup.

The America’s Cup, or Auld Mug as it’s familiarly known, is the oldest continuous competition in international sport, and among the world’s most prestigious sporting trophies.

In the 2021 36th America’s Cup, hosted in Auckland, New Zealand, the competition consisted of four teams – INEOS Team Britannia , American Magic , Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli , and Emirates Team New Zealand , who triumphed and went home with the Defender’s trophy.

INEOS America's Cup

For the 37th America’s Cup, this year in Barcelona, these four teams have returned, and are joined by two more teams – Alinghi Red Bull Racing and Orient Express Racing Team .

How the America’s Cup Works

This prestigious and historic event, in its 37th year, will begin on 22nd August 2024 with the Louis Vuitton Preliminary Regatta. On the 29th August, the teams will begin competing for the Louis Vuitton Challenger’s Cup, in a series of round-robin and knock-out races. The winner of which is to take the ‘Challenger’ status, and is entered into the final match.

America's Cup, how it works

The 37th America’s Cup final match will take the form of a first-to-seven-wins series from 12 October 2024, between the ‘Challenger’, the winner of the Louis Vuitton Challenger Selections Series, and the ‘Defender’, Emirates Team New Zealand.

Sir Ben Ainslie INEOS Britannia

Countdown to a showdown: Sir Ben Ainslie on why this America’s Cup will be the most competitive yet

As we enter the main competition, Sir Ben Ainslie examines the experience, resources and characters that may give each America’s Cup team a crucial edge.

How time has flown since the last Cup in Auckland in 2021. At INEOS Britannia we knew we had to keep going in our quest to bring the Auld Mug home, and I can break that decision down to four factors: securing Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS’s support; restructuring the team and personnel; creating a technical partnership with Mercedes GP; and learning from the Kiwis.

The team has worked incredibly hard and we believe we have a yacht with the potential to be a race winner. But it’s on us to maximise performance from the yacht and the sailors operating it over these final few weeks as we build up to the competition.

Observing our own preparations and those of our competitors, I expect AC37 to be one of, if not the most, competitive Cup in recent times. The level of the teams in terms of their history, personnel and funding is exceptional. There are no lame ducks. Whoever ultimately wins in Barcelona this October will have truly earned their success.

The Kiwis are the firm favourites. As Defenders they’re already in the finals and are going for an unprecedented three in a row. Of course they are: they have outstanding talent in management, design and sailing and the confidence of knowing they can win.

Almost 30 years in the game means Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli has the experience and talent to go all the way. Jimmy Spithill and Francesco Bruni bring huge experience to a young and highly talented sailing squad. As you would expect given the team’s heritage, the boat is stunning – if it’s as fast as it looks the rest of us are in for a drubbing.

American Magic has operated a slick campaign, completing an impressive testing programme with both their legacy AC75 and AC40. Sailing operations are led by the highly experienced  Terry Hutchinson with the on-water team led by Tom Slingsby and Paul Goodison.

Alinghi Red Bull racing have won the Cup twice, in 2003 and 2007, albeit with a different generation of design and sailing teams. That said, they have strong leadership from Ernesto Bertarelli and Brad Butterworth, who skippered in 2007.

Finally, we have the French – a young and relatively inexperienced team but with the ace card of a Kiwi design package and strong leadership from experienced manager Bruno Dubois and sailing team lead Quentin Delapierre, who has impressed on the Sail GP circuit.

The preliminary regatta on the Barcelona race course will be the first time the teams officially line up without the uncertainties of being in “testing trim” and will be a true marker of each team’s relative performance. After the preliminary regatta it’s the Louis Vuitton Cup, the official Challenger series.

First is a double round robin, where each team races each other twice. The Kiwis will also race in this round only but their points will not count to the Challenger series. One team will be eliminated and the final four will go on to a semi final and final, to decide the Louis Vuitton Cup winner and the team that will meet the Kiwis in the America’s Cup final.

Once competition begins there is little or no time to make serious modifications to the yachts, so if any team is struggling to perform in the preliminary event, it’s likely that their prospects will be limited.

That said, history tells us the yacht that wins in October may not necessarily have been the fastest in August. There are still plenty of tweaks that can be made and Mother Nature will also have her say in how things play out. One thing is for certain: the Cup this summer in Barcelona is set to be one of the most exciting ever.

America's Cup Match Racing

Next week, when the 37 th Louis Vuitton America’s Cup kicks off in Barcelona with its opening ceremony, the contest that began in 1851 with a race around the Isle of Wight between the fastest British and American sloops (the yacht America won handily) will come back to Europe for the first time in 14 years.

The move to the Catalan capital from the 2021 event in New Zealand will make it more accessible to sailing fans in Europe, and even North Americans who want to view the fast, technical AC75 foiling boats in person. Barcelona has been preparing itself for a surge of spectators for the “return” of the Cup, which was held twice in Valencia, Spain, in the aughts.

The America’s Cup may be billed as “the race with no second place,” but it takes three months of racing and four events for one of five Challenger teams to win the Louis Vuitton Cup, and that winner will race Defender Emirates Team New Zealand in the America’s Cup final. The racing runs from August through October, and this year includes a first-time all-women’s America’s Cup as well as an event for the world’s best youth sailors.

Having Barcelona as a venue was a smart move, partly for the gorgeous beaches fronting the race course on the Med. But there is also the city’s magnificent architecture and sense of history as well as vibrant arts, culture and, of course, no shortage of Michelin-starred restaurants.

There are many five-star hotels in the area, but the smartest and most thrilling way to see racing is by water. The vessel options are wide-ranging—from weeklong superyacht charters to luxury suites on a cruise ships to day trips on sailboats with Michelin-starred cuisine. Many can be combined with on-land stays and even cruises to other parts of Spain as part of the itineraries.

One important note: Four zones adjoining the race course allow spectator boats. Before chartering a vessel, be sure to find out which zone the boat will operate in, because that impacts how close you are to the racing.

Here are 9 options to suit the most avid Cup aficionados or those visiting Barcelona who want to sip champagne and watch the AC75 foiling boats battle it out.

Superyacht ‘Resilience’

america's cup rc sailboat

Edmiston is offering charters aboard the 212-foot Resilience during the America’s Cup. The ISA-built superyacht, designed by Enrico Gobbi, features a mosaic-tiled pool, circular fire pit and a BBQ for a ringside lunch. Post-race pampering comes via the steam room, sundeck jacuzzi and gym, and there’s even a self-playing Edelweiss piano and projector for evening entertainment. The vessel sleeps 12 across seven cabins. From September 16, weekly charters start at about $645,000 (€600,000).

Explora Journeys

america's cup rc sailboat

The soon-to-be-launched Explora II looks very much like its sistership, the Explora I : onyx finishes, self-playing Steinways, on-deck Technogym bikes, a spa with a Himalayan salt room, Dunhill cigar den and a wine cellar boasting decades-old Chateau Latour. With 461 luxury suites, how was the Explora II chosen to become an America’s Cup viewing platform? The idea came from the top down.

“I love sailing and believe the Med is the most beautiful sea on earth,” Pierfrancesco Vago, executive chairman of the cruise division of MSC Group, told Robb Report during a visit aboard Explora I in Barcelona. “We thought if only our customers could also experience [the America’s Cup], we can call it the ocean state of mind.”

Explora II launches in mid-September, with itineraries planned to coincide with the different Cup events. On October 6, the vessel will be in port for the Louis Vuitton Cup Final and Puig Women’s Races. Guests can take a walk to the official race village and experience its excitement before watching the races from their suites. A 10-night journey starts from $5,210 per guest.

The Almanac Sailing Experience

america's cup rc sailboat

Barcelona’s Almanac hotel has a romantic-gastronomic experience that offers guests front-row seats on a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45 sailboat with a capacity for 10 guests. Besides the racing, the package includes two nights at the hotel. The boat comes with the hotel’s branded slippers and Jimmy Boyd bespoke amenities. Enjoy a selection of customized Cava Bellinis from the pop-up bar. Chefs from the hotels’ restaurant will also serve up shrimp salad and fennel ceviche paired with organic Spanish wines. The boat can be chartered every Saturday from August 31 to October 26. The Louis Vuitton Cup round-robin starts on August 29 and lasts through Sept. 8. There’s also the Puig Women’s Race (first all-female America’s Cup in its 171-year history) and, of course, the America’s Cup finals in October. Prices start at $2,940 per couple.

Superyacht ‘C’

america's cup rc sailboat

For a majestic week-long cruise that incorporates America’s Cup summer races and possible side itineraries in Costa Dorada, Sitges and Formentera, Camper & Nicholsons’ expansive 177-ft C is the flashy option, defined by Minotti furniture, lacquered panels and a hamman. It also sleeps 12 in six cabins that feature a master and two VIP suites. Its chase boat also offers a great opportunity for side trips. Weekly charters from Sept. 18-October 31 run from about $513,000 or €400,000.

Sailing Yacht ‘Imagine’

america's cup rc sailboat

UK adventure specialists Pelorus offer a private seat on an elegant sailing boat seeped in America’s Cup history. Built in New Zealand by Alloy Yachts, Imagine is a 110-footer that served as an official viewing platform for the America’s Cup in Auckland, but it has also completed three global circumnavigations. Beyond its sailing chops, it’s a beautiful vessel, with a blonde, teak-lined deck, large salon and dining area, and three cabins for sleeping seven guests. It will be available from October 12 for the America’s Cup final. Pelorus is also offering to bookend the week with trips to Majorca and Ibiza. About $101,000 (£79,121)

Superyacht ‘Diane’

america's cup rc sailboat

Also available from Edmiston, the 141-ft Diane can accommodate 10 guests in five staterooms for the week. The interior is all about soft hues, featuring cream leather and white marble, boasting a bar and plenty of outdoor seating for watching the races. For the non-race legs, guests can take to the water via the large beach club, complete with seabobs and wakeboards. It has a Balearics license, making a hop to Ibiza or Majorca a possibility. Weekly charter rates from September 23 run about $150,000 per week (€140,000)

Black Tomato Cup Package

america's cup rc sailboat

Incorporating a city-stay, Black Tomato’s America’s Cup getaway includes a day’s private day charter to view the race, plus five nights at the Mandarin Oriental as well as visiting the regatta course and different bases of the America’s Cup teams for an insider’s look at the operations and technology. As a dayboat, its Bali Yacht Saxador 400 GTO can accommodate 11 guests. It sets sail from Port Olympic, giving guests a sweeping view of the city on one side and the regatta course on the other. The boat has access to the blue area (for preferred charter boats) on the front line. From $12,750 per person, based on two people.

Superyacht ‘Quasar’

america's cup rc sailboat

Camper & Nicholsons recently introduced the 153-foot Quasar to the charter market and what a great way to end the Med season than by viewing the America’s Cup. It has six cabins (including two master suites) that can accommodate 12 guests, along excellent outdoor seating, an upper salon that joins the aft deck area for viewing the races or dining al-fresco. The beach club has a large selection of water toys. Visits to scenic Med ports around Barcelona are also possible on the week’s charter, which start at about $232,000 (€210,000).

Superyacht ‘Kiawah’

america's cup rc sailboat

For front row seats on day charters in the blue zone (the third-closest area to the races), official charter partner ac37 Sailcharters offers different types of vessels and packages. The 110-foot Kiawah features a cocktail lunch on board, a specialized lecture from an expert sailor, and an AV system to follow the race in real time. From August 22 through October 11, daily rates are about $34,000 (€30,800) and during the America’s Cup finals October 12-27, rates move to about $41,000 (€37,400).

Uri alum tom burnham leads u.s. challenger in 37th america’s cup.

Cup racing opens Aug. 22 with preliminary regatta in Barcelona

American Magic team coach Tom Burnham '93

KINGSTON, R.I. – Aug. 19, 2024 – It’s probably no surprise that sailing led Tom Burnham ’93 to the University of Rhode Island.

Now head coach of the New York Yacht Club’s America’s Cup challenger, American Magic, Burnham grew up sailing in Orange, Connecticut. In his senior year of high school, already competing at the international level, Burnham raced in the 420s championship in Yugoslavia.

As luck would have it, teammates on the U.S. team included some URI sailors who sang the university’s praises. When Burnham returned to Connecticut, it was the spring of his senior year. He had committed to another school, but he took time to visit URI.

“I’ve sailed all my life. I was never a standout superstar but I was always involved in sailing and loved sailing,” Burnham says over the phone from Barcelona, Spain, as American Magic prepares for the 37th America’s Cup, which starts Aug. 22 with the preliminary regatta. “It was one of the main reasons I went to URI, frankly. And the sailing team was really good at the time.”

america's cup rc sailboat

Burnham’s addition to the URI team didn’t hurt either. In his four years at URI, the sailing team won several national championships and reached the World Collegiate Keelboat Championships – also called the Student Yachting World Cup – all four years. In 1990, the Rams became the only U.S. team to win the World Cup. It’s a distinction they still hold 34 years later.

Led by All-American Lars Guck, the eight-person team beat Sweden, Norway, Netherlands, Italy, France, and Australia in a field of nine other boats to take the championship, winning the last three races. Burnham remembers the great team atmosphere among URI’s eight sailors.

“I look back on that team and think of how we had some tough times during the event,” says Burnham, the bowman during the regatta, handling the sails in windy conditions. “It was a pretty long event. There were a lot of challenging conditions and some tough sailing. We worked really hard together and gelled as a team without a whole lot of practice.”

To celebrate, the team drove overnight to Paris after the winning race and ended up at the Hotel de Ville, the city hall of Paris, where the mayor awarded them a trophy. When they flew into T.F. Green Airport  in Warwick, then-URI President Edward Eddy  and others were there to greet them. The team members still stay in touch, Burnham says.

“Funny enough, I got a message just two days ago from one of the women on the team, Tara Walcott, with a photo of us from that trip, just out of the blue,” says Burnham, who lives in Newport. “Lars, the skipper, his son is now a sailor at URI. And my son, who is going to be a senior in high school, wants to apply to URI and be on the sailing team. [We’re] trying to keep the tradition going.”

Burnham, a team captain for two or three seasons at URI, describes himself as a team player, a role player, a team leader – and less of a standout performer. But he has put together a career on the water that would make many envious – while being among the lucky several hundred sailors who make a living at it as a professional.

“There’s no question that my time at URI and my time as part of the sailing team really made a huge impact on my life,”  he says.

His career started by being in the right place at the right time. In 1997, he was living in Newport, doing some coaching and taking care of people’s boats, when he got an invitation to go out for a day with America’s Cup challenger Young America, which was training in nearby Quonset Point. That turned into a job that started a 10-year run of competing in the America’s Cup, including two campaigns with the Italian team, Luna Rossa. In 2017, he returned to the America’s Cup as head coach of Sweden’s Artemis Racing.

He was hired about two years ago to coach the New York Yacht Club American Magic. The mission was to win the 37th America’s Cup, returning the Cup to the yacht club that held it for 132 years. The mission starts Aug. 22 when American Magic gets its first close-up look at the four challengers – Britain, Italy, Switzerland, and France – and defending champion Emirates Team New Zealand in preliminary regatta. The racing starts for real Aug. 29 with the start of the Louis Vuitton Cup round-robin regatta. The regatta’s winner will face New Zealand for the America’s Cup, starting Oct. 12.

In those two years readying for the Cup, American Magic has put together its eight-man crew and substitutes and built a brand new AC75, the 75-foot-long monohull racing yacht that the Cup adopted in 2021. The yacht – Patriot – was the work of the club’s more than 40 engineers, about a third of the club’s total workforce. Patriot was built in Portsmouth at the yacht club’s manufacturing facility and flown to Barcelona on a huge Antonov cargo plane.

america's cup rc sailboat

“The whole technology, construction, and design side is really a big part of the program with America’s Cup teams,” he says. “So that’s really exciting.”

Asked about his role as head coach, his first thoughts go to creating an inclusive team atmosphere.

“My real goal, my focus as a coach, is to create the environment for learning … where people feel comfortable asking questions and allowing themselves to be open to input, feedback and learning together,” he says.

As the crew practices off the Port of Barcelona, Burnham coaches from a chase boat, following behind Patriot and communicating directly with its crew. When racing begins, he will be in the chase boat, but stationed to the side of the race course and not allowed communication with Patriot. “That’s part of the reason why fostering this atmosphere and getting guys to work together and problem-solve is so important,” he says. “They have to be self-reliant and deal with things as they come up while they’re racing.”

The crew will get to start testing their pre-race preparation when the preliminary regatta starts. It’s strictly a dress rehearsal for organizers and racing teams – no one’s keeping points.

“We’re working through different starting strategies and techniques on how we’re sailing the boat. Then there’s the new technology going on the boat every day,” Burnham says about their practices. “[We’re deciding] how much we want to keep changing things and continuing to evolve; or, do we lock down some of the technology so we can be consistent with how we’re sailing the boat. Because you learn it really well when it’s not changing as much.”

Asked to handicap the Cup, Burnham starts with his standard line: It will be close and come down to execution on race day.

But he adds: “I certainly like our sailing team … and I think the boats are going to be relatively similar. There are going to be some boats that have better days than others in terms of wind conditions. There might be some teams that are great in heavy air but not so good in light air. These are all things we’re going to find out in the next couple of weeks.

“I think that we’re doing well and we’re in a good place, but I’m certainly not overconfident about it either.”

Sports | Terry Hutchinson set to lead American Magic into 37th America’s Cup

Harwood native moves from sailing crew to management role.

Terry Hutchinson, skipper and CEO of American Magic, said the capsize that punched a sizeable hole in the team's AC75, ultimately proved too much to overcome and was the primary reason the United States syndicate was eliminated in the Prada Cup semifinals.

That has been the ultimate goal for the Harwood native ever since he became a professional sailor directly out of Old Dominion University, where he was a two-time College Sailor of the Year.

Hutchinson has been part of four previous America’s Cup campaigns as a sailor beginning in 2000 as mainsail trimmer for AmericaOne. He came closest to capturing the America’s Cup in 2007 as tactician for Team New Zealand, which won the challenger series but lost to Alinghi Racing in the championship match.

In 2018, Hutchinson took the lead in forming his own America’s Cup syndicate — founding American Magic with the financial backing of billionaire businessmen Doug DeVos and Hap Fauth.

Fast forward to 2024 and Hutchinson is still trying to capture the America’s Cup, albeit now as team management and not an on-water sailor. The 1986 St. Mary’s High graduate is president of sailing operations and skipper for American Magic, which is mounting a second attempt to claim the Auld Mug.

After spending more than two decades pursuing sailboat racing’s holy grail, would winning the America’s Cup be just as sweet for Hutchinson without doing so as a competitive sailor aboard the boat?

“It’s certainly something that you grapple with,” Hutchinson told The Capital during a phone interview from Barcelona, where he is helping American Magic prepare for the 37th America’s Cup regatta with the AC75 Patriot. “Ultimately, it’s a team sport. Whenever I have been with Bella Mente or Quantum Racing, we always won or lost as a team. My job here is to facilitate having this boat win. If we’re fortunate to be successful, it will absolutely be just as satisfying.”

Following a disappointing result in the 2021 Prada Cup challenger series, American Magic shut down operations for almost a year while the syndicate leadership decided whether or not to move forward. DeVos and Fauth elected to continue their pursuit of the America’s Cup with one caveat — that Hutchinson focus his energy and expertise on managing the sailing team.

“Doug and Hap asked that I step off the boat and support the sailing team ashore — to help facilitate the success on the water. Our personal relationships are the foundation for the whole campaign and it was out of respect for them that I agreed with that suggestion,” Hutchinson said. “We decided it would be best to have the sailors with more experience in the foiling boats on the race crew.”

Hutchinson was grateful DeVos and Fauth committed to continue their financial support of the syndicate, while at the same time making it clear that doing so was the logical choice.

“Doug and Hap are experienced sailors and understood that in many ways we were a start-up program,” he said. “We faltered a little bit, but also made tremendous progress. We’d done way too much work and developed too great an infrastructure to let all that go.”

American Magic reboot

This marks the second iteration of the AC75 Class design rule, which calls for a 75-foot monohull featuring wing-like hydrofoils that lift the high-tech boats out of the water. American Magic has worked hard to assemble a roster filled with sailors that have significant foiling experience.

New to the team for the 37th America’s Cup is Australian Tom Slingsby, the 2012 Olympic gold medalist in Laser class. The 39-year-old from Sydney won the inaugural SailGP series as skipper for the Australian entry aboard the F50 foiling catamarans.

“Tom’s skill set is on display in SailGP and he is the most current of our sailing team in that [foiling] world,” Hutchinson said. “Tom is an incredibly talented sailor, but it would be an unreasonable expectation to think he is going to win this regatta for American Magic. It’s always a team effort and all the sailors abroad along with the 171 people supporting them are critically important in their own way.”

Slingsby serves as starboard helmsman with Michael Menninger as the flight controller and trimmer on that side. Paul Goodison is port helmsman and is backed by Andrew Campbell as flight controller and trimmer.

Goodison was aboard American Magic as main trimmer for the 2021 America’s Cup, while Campbell was a flight controller. Menninger is new to the team.

Hutchinson serves as sounding board, providing ideas and dispensing advice. During training sessions, he follows Patriot in a speedy motorboat, then imparts his observations during debrief sessions.

“Not racing on the boat provides a different perspective. In a lot of ways, you can help more by riding around in a chase boat because you have more time to see and think about things,” Hutchinson said.

“It’s really difficult to coach Tom Slingsby, Paul Goodison, Andrew Campbell and Michael Menninger because they’re all great sailors and really good at their jobs,” Hutchinson added. “My job is to support their instincts and try to present a different perspective when necessary. To be good at my job I have to make sure I’m listening and understanding the science behind the boat.”

Completing the crew aboard the American Magic AC75 are four cyclists. They replace grinders by using leg muscles to power the boat’s hydraulic systems. Hutchinson said the team intends to rotate a total of 10 cyclists because of the physicality of their job.

After making the decision to continue the American Magic campaign, the first thing the syndicate leadership did was hire Scott Ferguson as design coordinator. He was responsible for assembling a 45-member design team. Britton Ward, an Annapolis resident and vice president of Farr Yacht Design, teamed with Pete Melvin to design the hull.

Technological marvels

Hutchinson has been pleased with the AC75 the design team produced. This second generation version of Patriot is much smaller and lighter (by 1,000 kilograms) than its 2021 predecessor. By rule, the foil arms are 250 millimeters longer and the foil box is bigger than American Magic’s previous AC75.

Designers removed three athletes from the boat and switched from arm to leg power. American Magic was the only competing syndicate that chose to put its cyclists in the recumbent position.

“I think this Patriot is impressively different from the previous version. Aerodynamically it’s a much better boat,” Hutchinson said. “It’s also a boat that’s designed to be very good in maneuvers and taking off quickly. Our goal was to highlight the things we didn’t do well in AC 36 and improve upon those, which I think we did.”

These 75-foot foiling monohulls are technological marvels with the massive wingsail very much like an airplane wing. Hutchinson said the newest Patriot can achieve takeoff in just six knots of breeze and can reach speeds of 50 knots in just 17 knots of wind with flat water.

Some purists argue that this is no longer true sailing and cite the fact so much of the AC75 operation relies on hydraulic systems to support that stand. Crew members don’t hoist or douse the sails or perform many of the other tasks that are commonplace aboard typical sailboats.

Hutchinson disagrees with that assessment and said strategy, tactics, trimming and overall sailing skill are still important. Boat-handling and setup are also still critical. The Anne Arundel County Sports Hall of Fame member compared it to the difference between driving a standard vehicle compared to a Formula 1 race car.

“Everything is amplified even more because the speeds of these boats are so much higher. If the boat is out of balance it becomes catastrophic to performance,” he said. “All the same sailing principles apply, it’s just a vastly different platform.”

American Magic’s schedule called for 18 months of design time, 12 months of build time and six months of sailing. In terms of actual competition, the Louis Vuitton Cup begins Aug. 29 and concludes Oct. 7.

At the end of Round Robin 2, which concludes Sept. 8, one of the five challengers will be eliminated with the top four advancing to the semifinals.

“The hard part of the America’s Cup is that you do years of hard work for eight weeks of racing,” Hutchinson said. “It’s a massive investment for very little racing.”

All six participating syndicates will get a chance to gauge the competition during the Louis Vuitton Preliminary Regatta, which begins Thursday in Barcelona. Italy’s Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli is the Challenger of Record, while other contenders are Ineos Britannia (Great Britain), Alinghi Red Bull Racing (Switzerland) and Orient Express Racing (France). Defender Team New Zealand will participate in the preliminary regatta to test its AC75.

How to watch the 37th America’s Cup

Published on August 15th, 2024 by Editor -->

The 37th America’s Cup has nearly arrived. Can the Kiwis be the first team to win three in a row? Will Great Britain regain their trophy? Has the USA team righted the wrongs from the 36th edition? Will the air temperature in Barcelona ever stop sizzling?

The first look at the five Challenger teams and the Defender will be the final Preliminary Regatta on August 22-25, 2024. The match racing format has four races per day, with the top two AC75s advancing to one-race, winner-takes-all Grand Final.

While the results from the event don’t impact the America’s Cup, they will certainly impact each team’s performance plan going forward. To win the 37th Cup, it is about improve or die, and it all gets real with the start of the Challenger Selection Series on August 29.

On all competition days, races start at 14:00 CET (08:00 ET) and run until 16:30 or 17:00, depending on the schedule.
