Bavaria 820
Bavaria 820 is a 27 ′ 0 ″ / 8.2 m monohull sailboat designed by Axel Mohnhaupt and built by Bavaria Yachts between 1982 and 1985.
Rig and Sails
Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.
The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort Ratio
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening Formula
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Review of Bavaria 820
Basic specs..
The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.
The boat is equipped with 6 berths.
The Bavaria 820 has been built with different keel alternatives.
Unknown keel type
The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.30 - 1.40 meter (4.27 - 4.57 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.
The Bavaria 820 is equipped with a fin keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a full keel.
Bavaria 820 can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.52 - 1.62 meter (4.99 - 5.29 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.
The Bavaria 820 has been equipped with different engine alternatives.
Alternative 1:
The boat may be equipped with an inboard Volvo Penta MC5C diesel engine at 10 hp (7 kW).
Alternative 2:
The boat may be equipped with an inboard diesel engine
The transmission is a saildrive.
Sailing characteristics
This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.
What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?
The capsize screening value for Bavaria 820 is 2.22, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.
The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Bavaria 820 is about 150 kg/cm, alternatively 844 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 150 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 844 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.
Sailing statistics
This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.
What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?
SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 21.78

Bavaria 820
The Bavaria 820 sailboat is a popular choice for those looking for a small, affordable, and easy-to-handle cruising sailboat. With a length of just over 27 feet and a beam of just under 9 feet, it's small enough to be easily maneuvered by a single person but still offers enough space for a small group of friends or family. The boat's keel design and sail plan make it a stable and easy-to-sail vessel that can handle a variety of weather conditions.
Inside, the Bavaria 820 has a simple but functional layout that includes a V-berth, a galley area with a sink and stove, a dinette that converts into a double berth, and a small head with a porta-potty. There's also plenty of storage space throughout the boat, including lockers under the berths and cabinets above the galley area. Older Bavaria yachts 820 & 890 ????
- Thread starter HBL
- Start date 3 Mar 2005
Hello. Does anyone know anything about the older Bavaria boats when it comes to quality and performance. I have been looking on the "net" at the 820 and 890 from the early -80, they look very nice but I do not know anything about them. I think I´ve red somewhere that the older ones are built in a "stronger" way. Does anyone know anything ?? Cheers and greetings from Stockholm Hans
Re: Older Bavaria yachts 820 & 890 ???? A friend of mine owned a 1992 Bavaria 30 plus and it was very well built. There were a few problems that were rectified but the solidity of construction was never an issue.IMHO much better built that the more recent ones.
I had a 390 from 1991 vintage, very well built, over engineered in many ways with fittings much larger than current models, nice inovations like Kevlar underwater on the bow section to prevent damage if you hit submerged debris, carbon fibre stiffening on cross beams, give a stiff hull but also protects from hull bending if shes laid on her side ever. Nice joinery, we met a few cruising and every one had the same stories. Great boats!
Thank you for the information. It sounds great. I think I have to look into these boats a bit moore. Hans
[ QUOTE ] nice inovations like Kevlar underwater on the bow section [/ QUOTE ] These days Bavaria extend the Kevlar into the topsides which is a good thing considering the very flat side bow sections on many modern yacht designs.

Hi, does anyone have info on 820's with a centerboard? I am thinking of buying one and do not have much info. What is the board up draft(the rudder appears to be fixed)Thanks,Herb
Bav 820 Hi there! Was not aware they made the 820 with a centerboard. Mine has a full fin keel as does the only other 820 I know of. Our draft is between 4'6" and 4'9". Our rudders extend over 3' below water, perhaps a bit over. Never bothered to measure it. I will have her out here soon for a bottom job and can get the measurment then if it will be of any help.Good luck.P. MullinTranquility

Designed to determine if a boat has blue water capability. The CSF compares beam with displacement since excess beam contributes to capsize and heavy displacement reduces capsize vulnerability. The boat is better suited for ocean passages (vs coastal cruising) if the result of the calculation is 2.0 or less.
