What is a Catamaran?
A catamaran is defined as a boat with two hulls that connect to a structured bridging - which serves as the boat’s deck . In a catamaran, the staterooms and respective head s are housed with in the two hulls, while the deckhouse typically features a navigational ‘cockpit’ , saloon , and galley. Also referred to as a cat, these types of boats offer either sailing or power capabilities - or both .
The origins of a Catamaran date back to the 17 th century . D esigned as a raft consisting of two logs connected by planks, they were used by natives in the Indonesian A rchipelago and S outh P acific for the purpose of fishing, visiting , war, and exploration. These primitive catamarans originally paddled by a group of men ( and , eventually outfitted with a sail ) , have since evolved into one of the most innovative and revered sailboats in the world.
Today’s catamarans have seen an increased demand and popularity for vacationers looking to rent a spacious sailboat , sailors who want to cruise the world on a bareboat catamaran charter - even sailboat enthusiasts looking for fun daytime adventure on a small er sailing cat .
12 Knots offers over 11,000 modern catamarans for charter in 36 locations around the world . Modern cruising catamarans not only provide stability and excellent sailing performance - they also offer comfortable cabins , as well as functional , spacious deck s -often outfitted with netting ideal for sunbathing .
The Popularity of Chartering a Catamaran
So, what makes a catamaran charter so popular? In addition to a number of appealing attributes, there are also many advantages when you chose to rent a catamaran for your next sailing adventure:
Advantages :
Space - Catamarans have about 2 times the space than their monohull counterpart s - offering an extensive deck ing and a much more comfortable and spacious interior area with up to 4 cabins, as well as ample room for storage . A catamaran’s living space also sits above the water line which increases a better flow of air circulation /ventilation , more light , and fabulous views.
Stability - The design of a catamaran’s twin parallel hulls creates a natural stability . This results in less bobbing on the waves -providing a smoother ride. This is beneficial to travelers who are prone to seasickness or those traveling with children or elderly passengers .
Greater Speed - With the absence of a keel and a lower wetted surface area , catamarans are much lighter than their monohull counterparts enabling them to reach higher speeds (sometimes up to 50% faster) -especially when their sails are kept perpendicular to the wind .
Maneuverability - Twin engines located in each hull , along with its two rudders, allows for greater maneuverability with the ability to turn 360 degrees within the length of the boat. This is a great advantage when trying to dock in a narrow marina.
Shallow D raft - Unlike a monohull, a cat amaran can anchor in almost any bay. The absence of a keel results in having a lower /shallow draft which enables a cat to venture closer to shore- this feature is advantageous when exploring coral reefs and the many islands throughout the Caribbean .
Fuel - Even with twin engines, a catamaran charter can be economical when they rely on the ir sails and the wind.
Safety - Without a keel, cats are virtually unsinkable ; because unlike a monohull, the chances of them hitting something in the water and causing damage to the boat are much less unlikely . A modern catamaran built of light weight foam construction will also provide greater buoyancy on the water. A catamaran’s flat deck also makes it safer and easier for passengers (and pets) to move about the boat when it is sailing .
Disadvantages :
While there are certainly many advantages when you charter a catamaran, there can also be a few disadvantages .
Sailing - With the absence of a keel, sailing a cat is sometimes more challenging because they can’t sail as high into the wind as a monohull. Catamarans can also experience issues with maintaining momentum because they are more difficult to tack.
Docking - Unlike their monohull counterpart, the wide width design of a catamaran will require more room to dock ; b ecause they take up a greater amount of space, docking options may be limited and fees are often doubled.
Fuel consumption - Compared to a monohull, fuel consumption can be greater because of a catamaran’s twin engines.
Noise - A catamaran ’ s design of a wide deck strapped between two hulls can sometimes cause an irritating slapping or pounding sound - especially while sailing in rough er seas .
Safety - Unlike monohulls that were designed to correct themselves if they flip-over, cats are much more difficult to correct if they turn upside down.
Price - Depending on the boat itself, catamarans for charter can be more expensive than monohull sailboat rentals because of all the benefits they offer.
Cost of a Catamaran Charter
The total cost of renting a catamaran is considerably less than most people think- it is comparable to a weeks’ vacation at an all-inclusive beach resort.
The cost to charter a catamaran will always vary, but on the average, they usually run anywhere from $2,500 to 35,000 per week. The price of a catamaran rental will always be determined by the following factors:
Catamaran size , age and model
Destination
Duration of trip
Season/time of year (high season vs low/off season)
Amenities - such as kayaks, jet skis, diving and snorkeling equipment
Bareboat or crewed- Bareboat charters will always be less expensive than a crewed charter
For the best price and value for your money, you’ll want to contact 12 Knots to take advantage of their booking discounts and charter special offers
Finding the Right Catamaran Rental
Popular models of catamarans for rent ( cruising and sport ) :
Lagoon
Catana
Fountain Pajot
Corsair
CraigCat
Nautitech
Privilege
Megayacht Catamarans
Depending on your purpose for chartering a catamaran, it will be important to know the two types , as well as their functionality and characteristics :
Cruising catamarans
If your goal is a tranquil and relaxing vacation , cruising charter catamarans are the perfect choice.
Use only the wind and sails as its source of energy- which makes it one of the most environmentally friendly boat types . Cruising catamarans that have engines generally only use them when necessary.
Ideal for both couples and families (safer option for families travelling with children and elderly passengers) .
Known for their stability, reliability , and speed
Popular choice for bareboat catamaran charters and crewed charters because they provide ample living space, comfortable cabins , and a netted deck area perfect for sunbathing .
Sport catamarans
Ideal for rac es and regattas
Need proficient sailing skills and manpower to operate (crewed)
Known for achieving high speed s and exceptional maneuverability
Offer performance and functionality over comfort
Best Catamaran Charter Destinations
Some of the best destinations for catamaran charters are: Caribbean, South East Asia , Greece , Sardinia, and Croatia .
These locations are favorable because anchorage and moorings are generally plentiful and easy to access rather than marinas in the Mediterranean - which are typically more crowded ; and, quite often , will charge you double the price for docking space because the size of your boat.
Charter Sailboat Requirements
Bareboat catamaran charter s in most countries will require a license to operate the vessel . However, in the United States, France, and the Caribbean a license is not necessary - but documentation stating your experience and sailing history is required. Of course, that shouldn’t stop you from chartering a catamaran as you can always choose to book a skipper for your sailing vacation.

Why should I charter a catamaran?
Catamarans are a great choice for a variety of reasons. Here is why you should rent a catamaran during your next sailing vacation:
Unparalleled space and comfort:
Catamarans offer spacious layouts, providing ample room for you and your friends to relax and unwind. With separate cabins, spacious living spaces, and a large deck for outdoor living, you'll have plenty of space to enjoy your time on the water.
Stability and smooth sailing:
Catamarans are known for being stable, making them a perfect choice if you are prone to seasickness. Unlike most boats, catamarans have a double hull, which minimizes the rocking motion commonly associated with boats. This means that you are less likely to get seasick on a catamaran.
Enhanced privacy and flexibility:
When you rent a catamaran, you gain the freedom to explore the shallow water of secluded coves, hidden beaches, and remote islands that are often inaccessible by land. This level of privacy and exclusivity is unparalleled, allowing you to create your own personalized itinerary and escape the crowds.
Exciting water activities:
With a catamaran rental, you'll have the opportunity to indulge in a wide range of thrilling water activities . Dive into the azure waters for snorkeling or scuba diving adventures, glide across the waves on a kayak or paddleboard, or try your hand at fishing and catch your own dinner. The possibilities are endless, ensuring that each day on your catamaran is filled with excitement and memorable experiences.
Captivating coastal exploration:
With a catamaran, you can live on board and visit multiple destinations within a single trip. Cruise along stunning coastlines, discover hidden coves, and anchor in picturesque bays at your leisure. Renting a catamaran allows you to embark on a captivating coastal adventure, unlocking the true essence of each destination you visit.
How much does it cost to rent a catamaran?
The price of a catamaran charter depends on the location of the boat, the model, the number of cabins, and the special equipment offered by the owner. With Click&Boat, it is possible to plan your dream charter vacation for as low as $650 per day.
Here are some rental prices for a few of the most popular destinations:
- Charter prices in Croatia start from around $450 per day, not including the cost of the skipper, fuel, and extras.
- A day on board in Greece starts from an average of $550 per day.
- In Italy , the price of a day on board a catamaran starts from an average of $650 per day.
- In France or Spain , the cost starts from an average of $650 per day.
- Catamaran charter in the Caribbean starts from an average of $700 per day.
- And if you are planning a catamaran day charter to Seychelles , be prepared to charter prices starting from an average of $670 per day.
Keep in mind that renting a catamaran with a professional skipper will come with an additional fee. Also, if you choose a catamaran with higher-end amenities, this will have a higher price. Please confirm with the boat owner before booking.
Do I need a license for a catamaran rental?
At Click&Boat , you have the option to rent a catamaran with or without a skipper. However, the possibility of a boat rental without a skipper or a license will depend on the location.
In many popular vacation spots, such as the Caribbean and Mediterranean , no license is required for catamarans under a certain size. This means that you can embark on your catamaran adventure without worrying about having a license. However, it's important to note that some rentals may require a skipper if you don't have a license.
Don't worry, though, because Click&Boat offers professional skippers who can navigate the waters for you, allowing you to sit back, relax, and fully enjoy your time on board.
If you do have a boating license, it opens up even more possibilities for you. With a valid license, you can be your own skipper and explore the waters at your own pace. It gives you the freedom to chart your own course, discover hidden gems, and experience the thrill of sailing firsthand!
How to get a license to rent a catamaran?
For your catamaran rental in Europe , obtaining a nautical license isn't typically necessary. Most countries, including sought-after sailing destinations such as Greece and Croatia , allow boat rentals without special qualifications. Nonetheless, some countries have exceptions, such as Italy , where a certificate of competence is required to rent a sailboat. This can be obtained by taking a sailing course or passing an exam at a sailing school.
If you lack the necessary license or nautical permit, Click&Boat offers the option of renting a sailboat with a captain. This way, a professional sailor can guide the boat while you can relax. If you're a sailing enthusiast, don't miss out on the opportunity to learn fundamental sailing techniques, organization, boat layout, basic sailor's knots, and more from a professional. It's a unique opportunity to prepare yourself for future sailing adventures.

With Click&Boat, you can rent in more than 4,000 destinations. No matter which destination you choose for your sailing vacation, a private catamaran charter is sure to make it unique. An Insider’s Viewpoint
“How would we describe the perfect cruise from Annapolis to St Michaels? Talk to Susan and Traci at Waypoints and hire Mike to be your captain and chef extraordinaire! Booking was easy and Dark Star was the perfect venue for our sail on the Chesapeake. We were blessed with beautiful weather and we never lacked in getting the details we needed quickly when we asked questions and made requests. We launched the boat from their very accessible location on the Eastport side of Spa Creek. They helped us navigate parking and Waypoints had people help us with our luggage. We can’t say enough good things about our experience. They exceeded our expectations!” Julie M.
“If you are looking for a Five-Star full-service charter experience and marina, look no further than Waypoints Annapolis. The boat was in mint condition and the service at the Marina was exceptional. Annapolis is a beautiful historic city with great restaurants and a fun nightlife for those who want to spend an evening onshore.” Mike
“This may be the best charter company I have ever used. Fantastic customer service, wonderful, perfectly maintained boats, price competitive, perfect location right on the Severn next to Chart House, boat choice from small to large.” Sandy
“Phenomenal company, team, and experience, from start to finish! Waypoints Annapolis offers the finest yachts for charter and boat-as-business opportunity we’ve ever seen!” Karen

Why should i rent a catamaran.
Renting a catamaran allows you to enjoy an unforgettable holiday with as many people as you want! You can rent a catamaran for a family holiday, but you can also rent a catamaran with friends and enjoy a long trip to different places together like Ibiza , Phuket , Mallorca , Barcelona , or even Cabo San Lucas !
A catamaran is a perfect boat, not only for discovering incredible new places on land, but it's also a great way to spend time out at sea and discover the most interesting places. Catamarans are luxury yachts on which you can spend a week of adventure and new discoveries every day, with your own private space and a huge number of activities to do onboard.
For those prone to motion sickness at sea, chartering a catamaran could be an excellent option for you! This boat rental is a multi-hulled yacht, which creates a stable smooth sailing experience. Check out Nautal’s options for catamarans for rent in any of our charter destinations. Nautal also offers yacht rentals, sailboats, motorboats, and more in various destinations.
How much does a catamaran rental cost?
Catamaran charter prices range depending on several factors such as the destination you choose to sail from, the features of the boat, and what would be included for your sailing holiday. The owner of the catamaran chooses whether these rentals are available to rent for daily or weekly charters. Depending on the factors explained above you can find a catamaran charter for your sailing vacations starting from $4,000 per week in low season and starting from $8,000 per week in high season. For the yacht charters that offer a daily rental, the catamaran rental prices range from $625 per day in low season and from $1,000 per day in high season.
For some catamarans with mandatory skippers, this can either be an included or additional cost starting at $225 per day.
Do I need a boat license to rent a catamaran?
Some catamarans can be rented with or without a skipper depending on the rental choice. To rent a catamaran without a skipper you need a valid boating license. Ask the boat owner for confirmation about the nautic license that is needed in your respective destination.
Renting a catamaran with a skipper is an optimal choice so you can relax while the captain takes care of guiding the boat to the various destinations of your choosing.
What are the best destinations to rent a catamaran?
A catamaran allows you to pick and choose what you want to do on your trip! You can go to the island's most hidden spots or discover non-touristy beaches. Between beaches and new spots, you can swim in the clear turquoise water and warm up in the sun afterward. With a catamaran, you can dive and snorkel or scuba dive in the open sea and stop for dinner at the most magical spots.
The most popular destinations for catamaran rentals are Italy (e.g. Amalfi coast ), Croatia , and Greece (e.g. Athens ). Greek islands and the Balearic islands of Mallorca and Ibiza would also be recommended for catamaran chartering. Set sail in the Caribbean sea and hop to the various islands that are available such as Tortola in the British Virgin Islands, and Saint Thomas , or head to the Bahamas and enjoy your outdoor living island hopping such as Nassau and Great Abaco.
What should I consider when renting a Catamaran?
In general, catamarans have two hulls connected by a central structure which allows them to sail flat. There are several advantages to flat sailing. When the wind is strong and gains speed, for example, the sail areas are not reduced as they would be with other boat charters. The shallow, raised hulls at each end reduce friction in the water and improve the boat’s glide. This is also beneficial for any sailors that get seasick! This makes the boat less rocky and therefore will make it less likely that you feel seasick.
There are 4 levels in a catamaran: cabin, saloon and cockpit, the piloting and trampoline. It is a very airy boat, bright and open to the outside, which contributes to its luxurious side.
The speed of a catamaran is on average 6 to 13 knots. Finally, when it comes to the navigation of the catamaran itself, maneuvers are done from the cockpit because catamarans are often designed to be maneuvered by a single person.
What is included in a catamaran charter and what additional expenses can I expect?
Each catamaran charter offer has different additional and included costs. Depending on the owner’s offer items such as the skipper, a deposit, chef and crew, and water sports equipment such as snorkeling masks, paddle surf and kayaks may be included or additional costs.
Some owners will ask for a deposit, which needs to be paid at check-in. Likewise, a skipper may be mandatory or optional and come at an additional or included price depending on the catamaran option. If you decide to sail without a skipper, then additional costs may also include insurance.
Other mandatory extras can include final cleaning and refueling after your rental service. Ask the boat owner if they would like you to refill the fuel before giving the boat back or if they prefer to handle that themselves at an additional cost. Mooring fees at the base may also be included but if you decide to moor at other destinations then the fee will be an additional cost.
You may also choose to hire crew members to cook delicious meals and prepare drinks for you and your group! This is a great option for those that want to relax and get served some typical food from the area. For most catamaran rentals this will come at an additional cost.
Another optional additional cost can be water sports equipment! If you want to adventure into the beautiful blue water whether it is snorkeling and finding marine life or paddle surfing through coves, speak to the boat owner to know what additional equipment is available for you to rent!
It is worth noting that the offers are in Euros, therefore the price varies depending on the exchange rate for your respective currency.
How can I rent a catamaran?
We have a wide range of catamarans on the Nautal website where you can easily browse and find the one that suits you best. Be sure to use our filters to select your desired boat size, the number of passengers on board, the dates of your trip, whether you want to rent a catamaran with or without a skipper, and much more! Feel free to check with the boat owner if you have any doubts or questions. Prices for catamaran charters start at around $1,500 per week in the low season, but the more expensive models can go up to $16,000 per week.
What are the most popular brands for catamaran charter?
Some of the most popular brands for catamaran rental are Lagoon, Fountaine Pajot, Leopard Catamarans, and Catana. They all provide top-class comfort on board.
Why rent a catamaran?
A catamaran is a very comfortable option for a boat holiday. They offer more privacy, as the two hulls mean that the cabins are not close to each other. The typical nets at the bow are ideal to lie down to sunbathe, rest or play. They are able to get into shallow ports due to their small draft and can reduce wave-induced motion, therefore, helping with motion sickness.
How much does it cost to charter a catamaran?
A catamaran has at least 3 cabins, which makes it a bit more expensive than a sailboat. They cost around $1500 per week in low season. The larger and most luxurious models can cost up to $16,000 per week in high season and without a skipper. The price of a full charter, with skipper and crew, can go up to $25,000 per week. Catamarans can be rented on a daily basis in places like Mallorca and Ibiza.
What does a catamaran charter rate include and what additional fees can I expect to pay?
Typically, private charter catamarans have a base price and a total cost that includes mandatory extras. Pay particular attention here to decide if you want to include only the final cleaning or also add bedding, towels, and an engine for the auxiliary boat. Other costs include mooring fees, of course, which can vary greatly depending on the size of the ship, the port and the country. For gas and fresh water, you can expect to pay between $200 and $400 per week.
Do I need a license to charter a catamaran?
To charter a bareboat catamaran, you will need a license in almost every country. France and the Caribbean do not require a license but do require a "past history sailing experience". If you do not have a license, you can choose to book a skipper with your catamaran. Many catamarans have 2 additional cabins at the front of the bow, ideal for crew members, leaving 4 double cabins free for guests.
What are the best catamaran charter destinations?
Catamarans are perfect for a vacation in the Caribbean as their shallow draft is ideal for snorkeling and swimming. Martinique, Bahamas, the British Virgin Islands, and many other areas are highly sought-after destinations for a catamaran vacation, but there is also a great demand for catamarans in Greece, Sardinia, Croatia, and the Balearic Islands.

Notable Landmarks and Sites We’ll See
As you soak in the sun, we’ll sail past some of San Diego’s most spectacular coastal sites introducing (or reacquainting) you with the:
- USS Midway Aircraft Carrier – The USS Midway was commissioned one week after the end of World War II, was the largest ship in the world until 1955 and was the longest-serving aircraft carrier in the 20th century. The Midway was so large it could carry 120 planes on its armored flight deck and was the first aircraft carrier unable to cruise the Panama Canal due to its sheer size. While you are visiting San Diego, be sure to check out the USS Midway Museum to learn more about this iconic ship.
- Star of India – Star of India is the world’s oldest active sailing ship. She is an iron ship with a long and storied past that includes collisions, mutiny and cyclones. She worked as a cargo ship and then spent half a century bringing emigrants to New Zealand. You can tour the Star of India at the Maritime Museum of San Diego.
- North Island Military Base – Dubbed the official birthplace of aviation, the North Island Military Base is an active military base home to two aircraft carriers and 23 fixed and rotary wing squadrons.
- Cabrillo National Museum – T he Cabrillo National Monument and museum mark the location where the first European set foot on the western US. There is a lot to take in at Cabrillo park including the Old Point Loma Lighthouse and the rocky intertidal zone.
- Hotel del Coronado – The Hotel Del is a historic beachfront luxury hotel situated in the city of Coronado, just over the bridge from downtown San Diego. It opened in 1888 as the largest resort hotel in the world and today is the second-largest wooden structure in the US. If you are visiting San Diego, it is definitely worth spending a couple of hours at The Del — grab lunch or stroll the pristine beach.
Who is This Harbor Cruise Right For?

- Groups – We love hosting groups and can cater to parties as large as 75. Learn more about our group chartering options here.
Why Choose a Catamaran Harbor Cruise?
If you’re looking for a San Diego harbor cruise, you have options; we aren’t going to pretend to be the only boat in the bay. But, if you have ever experienced a sail on a cat, you’ll know why we are a bit biased.
- Catamarans offer much more space than monohull boats making them the perfect choice for groups; on a catamaran there really is no bad seat.
- Catamarans also offer more stability with less rocking back and forth than monohull boats, which can help with sea sickness.
- Thanks to their shallow draft, catamarans can access areas of the bay too shallow for most boats.
Triton is the largest Catamaran in The Big Bay and one of the only options in San Diego if you want to experience a ride on a luxury cat, but don’t want to spend the extra money for a private charter.
The Triton Catamaran made her maiden voyage to San Diego in January 2020. She is a brand new, GC70, 75 ft Day Charter Catamaran that boasts:
- Capacity for 100 passengers (we typically limit this to 70 people so you can spread out and relax)
- A dance floor
- Large deck with outdoor seating
