A catamaran is defined as a boat with two hulls that connect to a structured bridging - which serves as the boat’s deck .   In a catamaran, the staterooms and respective  head s are housed with in the two hulls, while the deckhouse typically  features a navigational ‘cockpit’ ,   saloon , and galley.   Also referred to as a cat, these types of boats offer either  sailing or power capabilities - or both .  

The origins of a Catamaran date back to the 17 th  century . D esigned as a raft   consisting of two logs connected by planks,  they were used by natives in the  Indonesian A rchipelago  and  S outh  P acific for the purpose of  fishing, visiting ,  war, and exploration. These primitive catamarans originally paddled by a group of men ( and , eventually outfitted with a sail ) ,  have since evolved into one of the most innovative and  revered  sailboats in the world.

Fuel -  Even with twin engines, a catamaran charter can be economical when they rely on the ir sails  and the wind.  

Safety  -   Without a keel, cats are  virtually unsinkable ;  because unlike a monohull, the chances of them hitting something in the water and causing damage to the boat are much less unlikely .   A modern catamaran built of light weight foam construction will  also provide greater buoyancy on the water. Sailing   -   With the absence of a keel,  sailing a cat  is sometimes more challenging because they can’t sail as high into the wind as a monohull. Catamarans can also experience  issues with  maintaining momentum because  they are more difficult to tack.  

Docking   -   Unlike their  monohull  counterpart, the wide width design of a catamaran will  require  more room to dock ;   b ecause they take up  a greater amount of space,  docking options may be limited and fees are often doubled.  

Fuel consumption  -  Compared to a monohull, fuel consumption can be greater because of a catamaran’s twin engines.  

Noise  -   A catamaran ’ s design of a wide deck strapped between two hulls can sometimes  cause an irritating slapping  or pounding sound - especially  while  sailing  in rough er  seas .  

Safety  -  Unlike monohulls that were designed to correct themselves if they flip-over, cats are much more difficult to correct if they turn upside down.

Catamaran charter prices range depending on several factors such as the destination you choose to sail from, the features of the boat, and what would be included for your sailing holiday. The owner of the catamaran chooses whether these rentals are available to rent for daily or weekly charters. Depending on the factors explained above you can find a catamaran charter for your sailing vacations starting from $4,000 per week in low season and starting from $8,000 per week in high season. For the yacht charters that offer a daily rental, the catamaran rental prices range from $625 per day in low season and from $1,000 per day in high season.

For some catamarans with mandatory skippers, this can either be an included or additional cost starting at $225 per day.

Do I need a boat license to rent a catamaran?

Some catamarans can be rented with or without a skipper depending on the rental choice. To rent a catamaran without a skipper you need a valid boating license. Ask the boat owner for confirmation about the nautic license that is needed in your respective destination.

A catamaran allows you to pick and choose what you want to do on your trip! You can go to the island's most hidden spots or discover non-touristy beaches. Between beaches and new spots, you can swim in the clear turquoise water and warm up in the sun afterward. With a catamaran, you can dive and snorkel or scuba dive in the open sea and stop for dinner at the most magical spots.

What should I consider when renting a Catamaran?

In general, catamarans have two hulls connected by a central structure which allows them to sail flat. There are several advantages to flat sailing. When the wind is strong and gains speed, for example, the sail areas are not reduced as they would be with other boat charters. The shallow, raised hulls at each end reduce friction in the water and improve the boat’s glide. This is also beneficial for any sailors that get seasick! This makes the boat less rocky and therefore will make it less likely that you feel seasick.

There are 4 levels in a catamaran: cabin, saloon and cockpit, the piloting and trampoline. It is a very airy boat, bright and open to the outside, which contributes to its luxurious side.

The speed of a catamaran is on average 6 to 13 knots. Finally, when it comes to the navigation of the catamaran itself, maneuvers are done from the cockpit because catamarans are often designed to be maneuvered by a single person.

What is included in a catamaran charter and what additional expenses can I expect?

Each catamaran charter offer has different additional and included costs. Depending on the owner’s offer items such as the skipper, a deposit, chef and crew, and water sports equipment such as snorkeling masks, paddle surf and kayaks may be included or additional costs.

Some owners will ask for a deposit, which needs to be paid at check-in. Likewise, a skipper may be mandatory or optional and come at an additional or included price depending on the catamaran option. If you decide to sail without a skipper, then additional costs may also include insurance.

Other mandatory extras can include final cleaning and refueling after your rental service. Ask the boat owner if they would like you to refill the fuel before giving the boat back or if they prefer to handle that themselves at an additional cost. Mooring fees at the base may also be included but if you decide to moor at other destinations then the fee will be an additional cost.

You may also choose to hire crew members to cook delicious meals and prepare drinks for you and your group! This is a great option for those that want to relax and get served some typical food from the area. For most catamaran rentals this will come at an additional cost.

To charter a bareboat catamaran, you will need a license in almost every country. France and the Caribbean do not require a license but do require a "past history sailing experience". • North Island Military Base – Dubbed the official birthplace of aviation, the North Island Military Base is an active military base home to two aircraft carriers and 23 fixed and rotary wing squadrons.
• Cabrillo National Museum – T he Cabrillo National Monument and museum mark the location where the first European set foot on the western US. There is a lot to take in at Cabrillo park including the Old Point Loma Lighthouse and the rocky intertidal zone. 
• Hotel del Coronado – The Hotel Del is a historic beachfront luxury hotel situated in the city of Coronado, just over the bridge from downtown San Diego. It opened in 1888 as the largest resort hotel in the world and today is the second-largest wooden structure in the US. If you are visiting San Diego, it is definitely worth spending a couple of hours at The Del — grab lunch or stroll the pristine beach.

Why Choose a Catamaran Harbor Cruise?

If you’re looking for a San Diego harbor cruise, you have options; we aren’t going to pretend to be the only boat in the bay. But, if you have ever experienced a sail on a cat, you’ll know why we are a bit biased. 

• Catamarans offer much more space than monohull boats making them the perfect choice for groups; on a catamaran there really is no bad seat. 
• Catamarans also offer more stability with less rocking back and forth than monohull boats, which can help with sea sickness. 
• Thanks to their shallow draft, catamarans can access areas of the bay too shallow for most boats. 

Triton is the largest Catamaran in The Big Bay and one of the only options in San Diego if you want to experience a ride on a luxury cat, but don’t want to spend the extra money for a private charter. 

The Triton Catamaran made her maiden voyage to San Diego in January 2020. She is a brand new, GC70, 75 ft Day Charter Catamaran that boasts:

• Capacity for 100 passengers (we typically limit this to 70 people so you can spread out and relax)

The Triton San Diego Harbor Cruise Itinerary

We’ll embark from 2700 Shelter Island Dr. San Diego, CA 92106 and make our way into San Diego Bay from America’s Cup Harbor. The Triton will then hoist it’s sails and sail toward Cabrillo National Monument, San Diego Naval Base, the Star of India, USS Midway, Coronado Bridge and back!

Tickets are $55 for adults and $15 for children. 

Where to Park and What to Bring

Parking Directions:

Please click   HERE   for the map of where to park. For free parking, please park in the rear of the parking lot as there are no meters. We do not have assigned parking, so please be sure to come at least 30 minutes early.

Walking Directions:

Once parked, please use this   LINK   for walking directions. You must arrive AT LEAST 30 minutes before your ticketed charter time. Please fill out your waivers and be prepared to present your waiver via QR code, and have your ID handy before you arrive!

Our Charter will not wait for anyone who is late and you will not receive a refund if you do not call before the charter departure informing us that you will not be arriving.

Triton Charters is definitely the largest catamaran yacht rental I’ve done in San Diego. Crew was super awesome and the Captain provided us with a smooth sail start to finish. Wonderful!
