The legion receives nod for world superyacht award nomination.

DLBA Naval Architects is proud to announce that M/Y The Legion has been nominated for the World Superyacht Awards. Garnering a nomination in the Semi-Displacement or Planing Motor Yachts Below 500GT – 35M and Above category, 37.1 meter, The Legion will compete against a field of exceptional vessels when the illustrious awards take place in London this September.

The DLBA team is responsible for the structural design, major equipment integration and foundations, hull lines, propulsion machinery, stability, anchoring system, and portlights of the yacht, creating an extensive design package. The Legion was built by  Horizon Yachts  for a third time yacht owner with specific, well-researched ideas about the vessel he wanted to build.

“We predicted a top speed of 23 knots and the boat achieved 24 knots,” says DLBA’s Jeffrey Bowles.

“It’s not often an owner takes delivery and the boat goes faster than he expected.”

A key requirement for the owner was a hull that delivered efficiency over long distances, with the ability to achieve bursts of speed into the semi-planing regime. After weight and performance estimates were developed, DLBA determined that a double chine hull form would best meet these needs. The double-chine hull allows for minimal resistance, provided increases transverse stability when operating in displacement mode at lower speeds, and provides improved seakeeping (ride quality) when operating as a semi-displacement hull at higher speeds.

This yacht is the biggest vessel to date for her owner, which allowed Horizon Yachts, and the project design team to bring the owner’s innovative spatial concepts and lifestyle requirements to life.

At the owner’s request, an extended swim platform was added, providing ample space for sunbathing and watersports, and visually elongating the yacht. Built of carbon fiber, it’s strong enough to hold the yacht’s tender, and hydraulically raises and lower to provide guests easy access to the water.

Designed to make the most out of the outdoor experience, The Legion’s expansive decks include a spacious flybridge with a jacuzzi big enough for ten, and space to entertain, as well as a forward bow seating area linked by walk-around decks connecting to an aft deck dining and bar area.

The RP110 model has been a great success for Horizon Yachts that can be attributed to the combination of elegant superstructure with the use of the double chine hull for excellent stability and seakeeping, as well as the minimization of drag for increased efficiency. A flexible layout, which lends itself to customization, further adds to the appeal of the RP110; a design DLBA is proud to see still going strong more than a decade after its creation.

The Legion was built to meet DNV High Speed Light Craft rules. In doing so, the DLBA team was able to leverage its body of experience designing other larger, high speed yachts to DNV Rules. We’ve been proud to see the success of this vessel on the water and are looking forward to seeing her compete for recognition in a field of cutting-edge yachts come September.

Superyacht THE LEGION is the seventh hull in the RP110 model from Taiwanese shipyard Horizon Yachts and was launched simultaneously with sistership WILD DUCK in 2019. Measuring 33.53m/110ft, her naval architecture is the work of Donald Blount while the exterior and interior styling comes from J.C. Espinosa and Cor D. Rover respectively. The accommodation sleeps a maximum of 10 guests in five en-suite cabins.

NOTABLE FEATURES OF THE LEGION: ~Flybridge Jacuzzi ~Enormous swim platform ~Main salon featuring floor-to-ceiling windows ~Lower deck beach club with sauna ~Abundance of alfresco living and dining areas ~Spacious guest accommodation ~Air conditioning ~Wi-Fi

The transom door folds down to create an extensive social area beside the water, and the main deck aft provides a curving sofa along the stern, a massive dining table and a wet bar to starboard.

To port there is a stairway up to the flybridge along with a side passageway leading to the foredeck, which comes furnished with a C-shaped sofa and a raised table for drinks at sunset while admiring the uninterrupted views. Farther forward there is a sunbed and a bench along the bow.

Up on the flybridge, there is a large Jacuzzi forward of the glass sliding doors into the skylounge, and along the stern there is room for a tender that can be safely and efficiently launched and retrieved using a Davit crane.

The lower deck hosts the crew accommodation forward with the majority of the guest accommodation amidships. To the aft is the engine room, followed by the galley and crew accommodation. Behind is a sauna and beach club with wine chiller and wet bar. On the main deck the Master suite is located forward and behind there is a spacious galley to port with seating for crew meals, or breakfast as a family. The formal dining area and main salon combine to form one large guest space which has a monochrome colour scheme. Glossy surfaces enhance the elegance and sense of space, and marble table tops plush silvery furnishings and a spectacular circular chandelier all combine to make an unforgettable party space. A curving sofa is placed on either side of the main salon circular coffee table and a widescreen TV is aft to port.

THE LEGION Specifications

The starboard main foyer stairway leads up to the raised pilot house where there is a corner port sofa and table aft of the helm station, and another stairway connects up to the flybridge, which can be enclosed to become the skylounge. A plush sofa is placed to port with two large drinks tables, and to starboard, there is a large wet bar with stools to seat up to five guests.

Yacht Accommodation

The accommodation is designed with 5 large en-suite cabins to sleeps a maximum of 10 guests: 1 Master suite, 2 double cabins and 2 twin cabins. The Master suite is situated on the main deck forward and comes furnished with a king-sized bed, widescreen TV, a desk to port and an armchairs to starboard beside the large windows. A walk-in wardrobe is placed behind the bed and the forward en-suite bathroom contains two sinks, a toilet, a shower and a bathtub. The lower deck hosts the rest of the guest accommodation, with the double cabins aft of amidships and located to port and starboard. Both have a queen-sized bed, a widescreen TV, large wardrobe, a desk and an en-suite bathroom to the aft fitted with a toilet, sink and shower. The twin cabins are forward of amidships and are also placed to port and starboard. Inside, there is a wardrobe, TV and an en-suite bathroom with a toilet, sink and shower.
