Well, what is that for a yacht here in Kiel? The eye-catching red and white motor yacht Forever One will now in all likelihood be moored at Kiel station quay until the beginning of May. The owner of the 35 million euro luxury yacht is the Mexican billionaire Bruce Grossman.

Forever One is waiting for the summer season in Kiel

After an overhaul in the Peterswerft, a search was made for a berth where the motor yacht could rest until the summer season. The choice fell on Kiel and the Bahnhofskai at the Hörn.

Le Grand Bleu, Explorer Yacht in Kiel

The last week in June is always reserved for Kiel Week in Kiel. Kiel Week or as we say in German “Kieler Woche” is one of the largest sail events in the world! Every year many traditional Tall Ships arrive in Kiel as well as small sailboats to take part in Regatta races held in Kiel Bight. This year one of the largest explorer yachts visited Kiel too. Le Grand Bleu was built in 2000 at Bremer Vulkan shipyard in Germany, with design by Kusch Yachts, Kono-Design and Bannenberg Design. This 113m megayacht is equipped with many tenders and toys! There is a 21m Princess yacht stored on her starboard side and a 22m sailing yacht designed by Dubois Design. And on board are at least six more tenders. The yacht has also the capacity to land two helicopters on two different helidecks and has a petrol tank to refuel them.

Le Grand Bleu visited Copenhagen and Aalborg in Denmark before arriving for Kiel Week in Northern Germany. The yacht is at the moment (02.07.2019) moored in Hamburg. A traditional sailing regatta, a boat trip on a historic waterway or sleeping outside on the Kiel Fjord - a visit to Kiel, Germany's only major city directly on the sea, is inextricably linked with water. A guide through the capital of Schleswig-Holstein:

Set sail in Kiel

Kiel.Sailing.City - the city in the north sees itself as the world capital of sailing. And has every reason to do so: Every year at the end of June, the state capital hosts the "Kiel Week," one of the world's largest sailing events (due to Corona, it takes place in September this year). Kiel has been hosting the sailing regatta since the end of the 19th century, and now around three million visitors flock to the city every year to watch the sailing professionals. Most of the sailing competitions start in Schilksee on Kiel's Dänischer Wohld peninsula , there is also the Olympic Center. But also from the Kiellinie, the promenade along the Kiel Fjord, sailing competitions of different disciplines can be watched. From there you also have a prominent view of tall ships and other (traditional) ships that take part in the annual windjammer parade always on the last Saturday of Kiel Week.

The regatta is framed by a summer festival with many cultural events. Part of the program are live concerts by international and local artists. You can find more information about the Kieler Woche here .

Bathing at the Kiel Fjord

You can also see the boats on a visit to the beach. From the Schilksee lido you can see the sailing ships plowing through the Baltic Sea in front of the nearby harbor of the Olympic Center. And from Falckensteiner Strand, Kiel's longest beach, you can watch ocean liners pass the Friedrichsort lighthouse and sail toward the expanse of the Baltic Sea. Both beaches are located on the western shore of the Kiel Fjord just outside Kiel. The best way to reach them is by ferry. Or you can grab a bike and ride along the Kieler Förde in the direction of the beach, the first of which you will reach in about 40 minutes. If you also like to be active on the beach, you can go straight to a water sports rental and equip yourself with a SUP board or a pedal boat. 

The Düsternbrook lido is within walking distance of Kiel's city center. Swimmers will enjoy the 60-meter lane, and there's a non-swimming area for the little ones. Or you can make yourself comfortable in the lakeside bar, sipping cocktails with a view of Kiel harbor, of course. 

A night in the sleeping beach chair

Listening to the steady sound of the sea at night? And watch a starry sky open up over the Baltic Sea after sunset? Among all the beach chairs in Kiel's Baltic resort of Heikendorf, there is one that can be converted into a cozy four-poster bed in the evening. The key to the bed on the beach is available at the tourist information office. You provide your own sleeping bag and pillow. And the next morning you can enjoy the provisions you brought with you directly on the beach. Or you can choose the more luxurious option and book breakfast at the Hotel Seeblick, which is located directly behind the basket. By the way: If the wind blows too hard or you feel unprotected at night, you can close the sleeping beach with a folding roof. Through the porthole you can still see the stars twinkling. Cruise on the Kiel Canal

More ships pass through here every year than in the Suez and Panama Canals combined: The Kiel Canal, an approximately 100-kilometer-long waterway between the Kiel Fjord near Holtenau and Brunsbüttel at the mouth of the Elbe, is the busiest, largest artificial waterway in the world. The canal, which is used by almost 32,000 ships a year, was inaugurated by Kaiser Wilhelm II at the end of the 19th century. Of course, you can watch the passing container ships, cruise liners and other ocean giants from land (for example, on the Kiel-Wik lock observation platform). Better, however, is a trip on the canal, for example on the restaurant ship Freya, a historic paddle steamer. Those who have brunch or coffee and cake in the large Art Nouveau salon or on the sun terrace furnished with teak furniture will feel like they have been transported back to 1905, the year in which the "Grande Dame" was built. During the several-hour trip, which departs from Kiel's train station quay, the captains explain a lot of interesting facts about locks, high bridges and other sights along the route. Technology fans will love the window in the floor of the deck, which provides a glimpse into the engine room of the paddle steamer.

Long-distance cycling on the North-East Canal Route

You can also explore the waterway by bike. The Kiel Canal long-distance cycle route runs 325 kilometers from Brunsbüttel to Kiel through the hinterland of Schleswig-Holstein with idyllic forest and meadow landscapes, rivers and lakes. There are many sights to marvel at along the route, which can be divided into six stages, including locks, bridges and canal communities. In addition, cyclists pass historic places such as the "pirate's nest" of Brunsbüttel (until the 13th century, the people of Brunsbüttel regularly robbed passing merchant ships of their cargo), Dithmarschen with its beautiful half-timbered houses, or Albersdorf with its Stone Age park.

82m superyacht Graceful spotted leaving Blohm & Voss shipyard

The 82 metre superyacht Graceful has been spotted leaving Hamburg after a five-month refit at her home shipyard Blohm & Voss .

Graceful arrived in Germany in September 2021 and has now emerged with a number of modifications, including the addition of two forward balconies and a significant extension to the swimming platform.

The yacht was first commissioned in 2005 and began her life at the Russian Sevmash shipyard on the coast of the White Sea. She was eventually finished off at Blohm & Voss and launched in 2014 after the build was delayed when the hull fell from a transport vessel on her way to Germany.

Constructed in steel and aluminium to a design by H2 Yacht Design, the tri-deck superyacht can accommodate up to 12 guests and 14 crew. Interior spaces are finished in a variety of textures; tooled leather, tapestry walls, marquetry, marble, stainless steel, ebony and untreated teak are melded together for a lavish feel on board.

A key element on board is the indoor pool, measuring 15 metres long and three metres wide and occupying the space normally assigned to a saloon and dining area. The multi-function area can also be transformed into a theatre, with a drop-down screen and projector, as well as a party space –  the bottom of the pool rises to become a dance floor, with glass panels that change colour while the cabinets for pool towel storage are transformed into Vodka bars.

The rest of the main deck features a formal dining room, a saloon with a white Steinway piano, a luxurious tearoom and an al fresco dining area.

Other highlights on board Graceful include a helideck equipped for an EC135 chopper, a gym, cocktail bar, and a spa pool alongside another two plunge pools for hot or cold dips. A large library on the upper deck hosts an owner’s office while the owner’s suite is accessed via a corridor with a wine cave capable of carrying 400 bottles.

As a yacht that spends much of its time cruising in cooler climes, Graceful also has two gel-burning fireplaces to create a cosy atmosphere on board.

Graceful has now departed Germany via the Kiel Canal.

Rent a bicycle in the city center, and pedal along the tranquil path that hugs the Kiel Canal. Dozens of ships come through daily — often more than the Panama and Suez canals combined — making it a great place to stop and observe.

LOCAL CUISINE

Snack like a sailor and try Kieler Sprotte, small smoked fish served whole. Or, opt for a meal of pears, green beans and bacon (Birnen, Bohnen und Speck) boiled together and plated with potatoes. If it's chilly out, warm yourself up with Schnüüsch, a hearty stew of vegetables cooked in milk and seasoned with parsley.

Kiel's artisans are famed for their model ships, available for purchase in local gift shops. You can also return home with a nautical antique collected from the ships that have come to rest in Kiel's harbor, often found for a bargain at the city's flea markets. Palermo – Die Untersuchungen zum tragischen Untergang der Luxusyacht „Bayesian“ , bei dem sieben Menschen ihr Leben verloren, wurden von der Staatsanwaltschaft aufgenommen. Bislang konnte noch keine definitive Ursache für das Unglück ermittelt werden.

Nach Untergang der Bayesian – Ermittlungen gegen Crew

Berichten der Nachrichtenagentur Ansa zufolge, richteten sich die Ermittlungen gegen den Kapitän des Schiffes . Es wird geprüft, ob er sich der fahrlässigen Tötung und des Schiffsbruchs schuldig gemacht hat. Trotz mehrerer Befragungen konnten bisher keine schlüssigen Ergebnisse erzielt werden. Der Kapitän weist jegliche Verantwortung für das Unglück entschieden zurück.

Die Ermittler stellten sich die Frage, warum es eine mehr als halbstündige Verzögerung zwischen dem Sinken des Schiffes und dem Abschuss der Notrakete gab. Auch die Kommunikation zwischen dem Kapitän und seiner Crew steht im Fokus der Untersuchungen. Es scheint, dass zu spät auf den Sturm reagiert wurde, der zum Untergang der „Bayesian“ führte. Während der Kapitän seine Unschuld beteuert, tauchten brisante Fotos auf.

Yacht-Unglück: Beweisen Bilder die Unschuld der Crew?

Giovanni Costantino, der Chef der Werft, erhob kürzlich schwere Vorwürfe gegen die gesamte Crew des verunglückten Schiffes. In der Fernsehsendung Porta a Porta behauptete er, dass das Unglück auf eine „absurde Fehlerkette“ zurückzuführen sei. Er machte die Crew dafür verantwortlich, dass nicht alle Menschen gerettet werden konnten. Seiner Meinung nach war die Besatzung „nicht koordiniert, nicht vorbereitet und vermutlich abgelenkt“.

Karsten Börner, ein Kapitän, der sich zur Zeit des Unglücks in der Nähe befand, äußerte sich gegenüber spiegel.de zu den Anschuldigungen gegen die Crew. Er nahm ebenfalls an der Videokonferenz zum Unglück teil und berichtete, dass dort behauptet wurde, dass „alles nur die Schuld der Crew sein kann.“ Börner fühlte sich abgewürgt, als er auf Fehler in der Analyse des Unglücks hinwies.

Laut spiegel.de verfügt Börner über Fotos, die mögliche Fehler der Crew widerlegen. „Wir waren mit unserem Beiboot unterwegs und haben die Bayesian noch mal umrundet. Da ist ein Bild dabei von achtern, da kann man sehen, dass weder die Klappe an Backbord im Rumpf auf ist noch die Heckklappe.“ Diese waren laut dem Werft-Chef von der Besatzung möglicherweise nicht geschlossen worden. This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Hannah Staddon, a 31-year-old private chef who works onboard the Mucho Gusto , a luxury charter in the British Virgin Islands. It has been edited for length and clarity.

I've been in the industry for around 13 years. I started as a yacht stewardess in the Mediterranean. I worked as a stew for about three years before gravitating toward the kitchen.

At one point, a chef I was working with didn't enjoy baking — but I was pretty good at it. That jumpstarted my interest in cooking, and I saved up through another season to put myself through chef's school back in South Africa, where I'm from.

I worked as a crew chef for a 160-foot yacht for a bit, but I realized I didn't even really like crew cooking because they just made food in big batches.

I cooked for 10 to 14 people daily for about four or five months. But I was getting burned out, and I wanted to be creative and make small, beautiful things.

So, my partner and I started looking for a boat together, and we ended up working together on board Mucho Gusto.

It's been seven years, and we haven't looked back.

My day in a nutshell

I get up at about 6 a.m. As soon as I wake up, I start prepping pastries, laying out the tables, and getting our guests coffee.

I usually make a continental spread for breakfast with homemade granola yogurt, fruit plates, and pastries. Then, I'll have a hot option for the day, like eggs benedict or waffles.

I like cooking light and healthy food. So I do spreads, sometimes with homemade focaccia, and then a protein, depending on the guests' preferences.

I also try to source most of my produce from local farmers and fishermen.

Lunches vary between plated salads and buffet-style courses. I whip up homemade ice cream, so there's always a selection available for dessert at lunch.

I start prepping dinner at about 5 p.m. and usually serve it at around 7 p.m.

Depending on how active the guests have been, I may serve a little snack plate before dinner, like some fresh fruits or a charcuterie board.

By about 7 p.m., once all the guests have showered and are ready for dinner, I'll have set the table. Dominic, meanwhile, serves sundown cocktails.

Unless guests request a lighter meal, we usually do three courses — starters, mains, and desserts. I've gotten good reviews for my sushi spreads, in particular.

My homemade pasta is also generally a winner.

Sometimes, I make black pepper and truffle pasta with sauteed mushrooms and a big wagyu steak. People go nuts for that, so I must be doing something right.

We have an age limit of 12 on board the yacht. But at that age, many kids still have a limited palate, so food looks like chicken nuggets and chips or pizza all week. They generally only eat maybe two or three different meals.

Generally, mums communicate their preferences to me. So, I ensure that chicken nuggets and chips are stocked on board and heat them 20 minutes before meals.

After dessert, we clean up, stack the dishwasher, and prep for the next day. If I need to make focaccia dough or I'm doing cinnamon buns the next morning, I've got to make all the dough that evening.

After that, I can typically go to bed, which could be any time between 9:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.

Better than other restaurant jobs

Something I've enjoyed about the job is that I get to be a lot more involved with what's happening outside the kitchen,

If you're confined to working in a kitchen all day, you can feel detached from what happens outside it. And in a restaurant kitchen, you're often making the meal you've been told to make, as opposed to getting to be creative.

That's different on a yacht. I get to understand the guests and build relationships with them. And that's my favorite part of the job.
