The 2023 Monaco Yacht Show Round Up

By Emily Dawkins

2023 marks the 32nd edition of the most renowned superyacht show in the world. For 32 years, the Monaco Yacht Show has welcomed visitors from around the world to discover the latest and greatest from all areas of the superyacht industry. Despite its incredible heritage, this year was truly remarkable in every single aspect.

When pondering over the Monaco Yacht Show (MYS), superyachts, luxury and grandiose often come to mind. The 2023 edition, however, was an honest showcase of how, in reality, the annual September show is so much more.

Superyachts.com were honoured to welcome Managing Director of the MYS, Gaëlle Tallarida, to our interview studio during the show, where she shared more about the organisers' dedication to making the event a place to not only marvel at superyachts, but a place to learn, share and discover, with the visitor experience indispensable. This has certainly come to fruition, with a growing programme for VIP attendees including separate entrances and a new Sapphire Programme, an initiative selecting guests wanting to buy or charter a superyacht.

Of course, what would the September show be without superyachts? 117 vessels, including 3 remarkable catamarans were berthed in the iconic Port Hercule for the annual MYS this year. Incredibly, 45 of these superyachts were new builds launched in 2023, with 16 other vessels launched or refitted in 2022. According to figures from the show, 61 yachts on display this year were less than two years old, accounting for a momentous 52% of the total MYS fleet.

58 of these yachts were presented by shipyards and 59 were presented by brokers, to ensure a diverse collection of new builds, charter and brokerage vessels. Alongside superyachts, 61 luxury tenders were on display, including two extraordinary submarines.

Aside from superyachts and tenders, MYS offers the perfect display for those looking for the adventurous side of the yachting experience. The Adventure Area was home to 30 cars and motorcycles as well as two helicopters: offering a truly immersive experience for all visitors.

Excellence and innovation are two words that perfectly summarise the exhibitors of the 2023 MYS. Shipyards, brokers, designers, naval architects, service providers, marine manufacturers; the list goes on in regard to the diverse array of exhibitors on display this year. A total of 560 carefully selected exhibitors showcased their new products, latest innovations and recent projects, as well as shared insights about their goals and plans for the coming year until the next show. 28 industry conferences also took place over the four days, providing the perfect platform to listen and discuss several topics with industry leaders and specialists.

Things were just as busy at the Superyachts.com stand, with over 70 interviews conducted over the four days. We were delighted to welcome a number of industry CEOs and company Founders, to hear the breaking news as it happened. Interviews during the day and parties at night, the epitome of work hard, play hard, Superyachts.com were thrilled to host a Tacos and Tequila party for Amandine Chefs, as well as Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Authority’s annual English Harbour Rum party. Just across the Port from the Superyachts.com stand, M/Y BG CHARADE held hundreds of guests for a lavish evening with ALBA , supported by Superyachts.com.

From Superyachts.com, a huge thank you to all of our co-exhibitors, sponsors, interviewees, visitors, host Shari Liu and team: without you, none of this would be possible.

As the celebratory horns echoed around Port Hercule this evening, the 32nd edition of the Monaco Yacht Show has officially come to a close. It is safe to say that this year's show was indeed witness to the ultimate gathering of maritime luxury, and we already can’t wait for next year (after a rest).

"There's a lot of different elements: we work with the yachting industry to understand their needs and understand what they expect from the Monaco Yacht Show." Gaëlle Tallarida, Managing Director, Monaco Yacht Show

Monaco Yacht Show

It’s time to book your flights—or berth—for the annual pilgrimage to the South of France for the Monaco Yacht Show , held this year from September 25 to 28. Its front-and-center Port Hercules location is a magnet for buyers, wannabe buyers and rubberneckers. This is the event that showcases not only the newest, largest and most luxurious yachts on the planet but also the speedy and contemporary tenders to go with. Here we identify a dozen not-to-miss boats scheduled for display at this year’s show.

Headquartered in Germany, the Abeking & Rasmussen shipyard will show the 262-foot yacht Excellence , whose bold, interesting lines and interior design were conceived by London-based Winch Design. The yacht’s guests will enjoy the pool, hot tub and huge beach club, not to mention Excellence’s limo tenders.

Amels Aurora Borealis : 220 Feet (67 Meters)

Delivered in July, the 220-foot Amels Aurora Borealis makes its world premiere in Monaco. While giving a nod to the grand ocean liners of the last century, the superyacht maintains a modern feel. Featuring an exterior by designer Tim Heywood and an interior by Winch, the boat has seven staterooms for 14 guests plus cabins for 15 crew and the captain.

Benetti Metis : 207 Feet (63 Meters)

The interiors of the five-deck, 207-foot Metis from Italian yard Benetti were conceived by UK-based Bannenberg & Rowell in conjunction with Birgit Otte Interior Atelier. Giorgio M. Cassetta crafted the flowing exteriors. Highlights include an asymmetrical layout, helipad, a 1,700-plus-square-foot owner’s apartment and custom flydeck gym.

Heesen Yachts Vida : 180 Feet (55 Meters)

Dutch builder Heesen delivered the 180-foot Vida following sea trials that clocked the Van Oossanen Naval Architects–designed, fast-displacement-hull yacht at a top speed of 16.4 knots. Inside, there’s a backlit ivory onyx arch that welcomes guests through the aft entrance and acts as a 42-bottle wine cellar. It’s also the first Heesen to comply with the latest emissions regulations.

Tankoa Bintador : 164 Feet (49.9 Meters)

If you liked Italian builder Tankoa ’s Vertige , you will love Bintador . The second hull of Tankoa’s 164-foot S501 hybrid superyacht is kitted out with a main-deck master suite, five staterooms, a main-deck galley and a helipad. Inside, Francesco Paszkowski joined forces with Magherita Casprini to create the light and modern interior bedazzled with natural materials. And its gym and beach club are hard to beat.

Extra 130 Alloy L.A.U.L. : 130 Feet (39.7 Meters)

Extra Yacht's 130-foot yacht L.A.U.L.

Extra Yachts will premiere the 130-foot superyacht L.A.U.L. , the first Extra 130 Alloy from the yard. Designed for entertaining, the boat features an upper deck with dining area, bar, sunpads, hot tub and more. It accommodates 10 guests in five cabins and fits an 18-foot tender and a personal watercraft in its garage. Two 1,800 hp CAT C32 ACERT T3 engines power the yacht to a 17-knot top speed.

Lürssen Madsummer : 312 Feet (95 Meters)

Lürssen Madsummer 312-foot yacht

German shipyard Lürssen will debut its latest delivery, Madsummer . UK-based Harrison Eidsgaard gave the superyacht its well-balanced exterior proportions and voluminous 46-foot beam, which in turn provided designer Laura Sessa the space she needed for a roomy and contemporary interior. The large beach club and spa with terrace on the lower deck will no doubt be a show favorite, while all will also appreciate the helipad for ease of access.

Azimut Grande S10: 94 Feet (29 Meters)

Debuting in Cannes just before the Monaco Yacht Show , Azimut ’s Grande S10 features interiors by Azimut and Francesco Guida and exterior design by Alberto Mancini. The 94-foot yacht accommodates eight guests and three to four crew in four staterooms and two crew cabins. A pair of 2,600 hp MTU engines propel the S10 to a top speed of 35 knots.

Arcadia Yachts Sherpa XL: 79 Feet (24 Meters)

Italy’s Arcadia Yachts will bring the 79-foot, solar-paneled Sherpa XL, which may be used either as a primary yacht or as a shadow boat to carry all the fun gear. Milan-based Hot Lab penned both exterior and interior, including a tender garage to free up deck space. Two Volvo Penta IPS 1050 engines create a 20-knot top speed, and solar energy generates 3 kW for powering up onboard basics.

48 Wallytender: 48 Feet (14.5 Meters)

Back from the dead, the 48 Wallytender represents the first vessel to come out of the Wally/Ferretti Group partnership and recent full acquisition. Standard Wally fold-down bulwark sections maximize deck space to make way for dining and sunning space, plus the galley and swim platform. Down below is a cabin for two. Twin Volvo Penta IPS 650 engines give this yacht a top speed of 38 knots.

Baltic Yachts 112 Liara (sailing yacht): 112 Feet (34 Meters)

Look out for Liara , the 112-foot, sleek sailing yacht from Finnish builder Baltic Yachts . The Malcolm McKeon–designed sloop features a light interior by Adam Lay. Conceived as an easy-to-manage family cruiser capable of quickly crossing oceans, Liara is also race-ready for events such as the St. Barths Bucket and the Caribbean 600.

Damen Yacht Support Joy Rider : 147 Feet (45 Meters)

Damen ’s first 147-foot YS 4508 model, Joy Rider , offers standout features such as a serious deck crane, making way on the aft deck for tenders and toys. Whether for superyacht support or stand-alone yachting, the boat includes lounging space on the sundeck, a large saloon, cabins for six guests and seven crew, a helipad and smooth cruising thanks to stabilizers and the yacht’s Sea Axe design.

The importance of the Monaco Yacht Show

The MYS serves as a dynamic hub for exchanges, where, for over 30 years, yachting industry players and clients have met to share knowledge, stimulate the emergence of innovative ideas, and develop them. This synergy helps shape the future of the entire industry, with a special focus on superyachts that represent the core business of the event.

Beyond its unifying role in the sector, the Monaco Yacht Show positions itself as the gathering point for a committed and proactive community that has been playing a constructive role for several years in addressing economic, social, technological, and environmental challenges. In its perspective of continuous improvement for the yachting market, as well as to provide a better experience for visitors, the Monaco Yacht Show commits each year to offering various initiatives, always maintaining a focus on innovation and education, in order to make visitors more aware of the latest trends in yachting and respect for the ecosystem.

Since the 2021 edition, the Monaco Yacht Show has highlighted the crucial aspect of sustainability in yachting with the “Yacht Design & Innovation Hub” and the “Sustainability Hub,” specific exhibition areas for the green industry.

A new video follows the team at Heesen shipyard as they give us an exclusive glimpse into the preparation that went in to the  Monaco Yacht Show 2018 .

The Monaco Yacht Show 2018 may be behind us, but a new video from Dutch shipyard Heesen gives us a peak into the behind-the-scenes action of the show. Highlighting the amount of preparation that goes into the event, members of the team explain how they organise their time and assemble the stand.

Heesen stand with logo and motto at Monaco Yacht Show 2018

Heesen's Event Co-Ordinator, Linda van Herpen, explains how the event is organised.  As soon as the Monaco Yacht Show closes its doors, plans for the following year's edition will get underway.

The yachting event is an important opportunity for shipyards to showcase their latest launches, as well as new designs and innovative technologies, so it's crucial plans are put in place well in advance.

By April, the entire event season will be finalised and shipyards will have a clear picture of what yachts will be attending the prestigious show. From here, they can then begin planning the finer details.

In April, the event season will be finalised and shipyards will have a clear picture of which yachts will be attending the prestigious show.

In the weeks leading up to the Monaco Yacht Show, stand builders will start to assemble the stalls where the exhibitors will be based. Taking more than 280 hours of elbow grease and over a week to erect, it's clear the Heesen stand was a labour of love.

The finished result was a stand which gleamed, with the Heesen logo and motto emblazoned on the frontage. As ever, the stand featured models of the yachts currently being built at the shipyard and they were shown off to visitors taking a look around.

In the video, Robert Drontmann, Heesen's Sales Manager, also explains the process that Heesen and other shipyards go through when taking clients and guests on tours around their yachts, with one-hour slots available for clients or their brokers.

Heesen's popular charter yacht IRISHA, who recently scooped up an award at the Cannes World Yacht Trophies , also makes an appearance in the video.

Set against the beautiful backdrop of  Monaco , the video allows viewers to get a real feel for the atmosphere in Port Hercules.

What Life Might Look Like on the World’s Biggest Yacht

Portrait of Adriane Quinlan

On a Tuesday morning in September, a six-foot-long plastic model of a boat sat on the second floor of the Explorers Club, looking a little like a beached Orca, sleek and out of place in the tweedy boardroom. The tiny yacht had traveled to East 70th Street from Los Angeles and, before that, made stops in Monaco and Zurich, Cannes, and West Palm Beach — a prop to entice buyers who can spend $10 million on a cabin in the world’s biggest yacht. If it gets made. The boat will be called the Ulyssia and it’s the passion project of Frank Binder, a billionaire from the Merck clan with a thing for boats (he once owned a shipyard in Monaco). Lenny Kravitz, his friend, is onboard to help design interiors. (“He’s a genius.”)

Binder has been doing a world tour to find other buyers — who might be hard to meet. Maintenance hovers around 3 percent a year, or $300,000 for that $10 million one-bedroom. It’s a big ask, especially for a boat that, if he does get recruits, won’t launch until 2028. To help, Binder brought on two former executives from the World , the luxury liner that was the first — and only — to prove rich people want to live … at sea, all year. (It launched in 2002, is still sold out, and has yet to snag on an iceberg or go bankrupt.)

Renato Chizzola , a senior vice-president for the Ulyssia who worked as the general manager of the World for five years, spoke to Curbed about the terrors of elephant seals and why he once hired Israeli snipers to come onboard.

This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity.

What did your job on the World look like??

I was in charge of lifestyle, expedition, everything — even the kitchen. You have a captain who’s the master of the vessel, and he ultimately will have the last word on safety, security, where we go, where we can’t go. But then you also need to have somebody who has grown up in a galley carrying luggage. I’m 60 in October. When I was 27, I said, “Okay, how can I see the world without having money?” So in 1993, I was hired on the Queen Elizabeth II , then went to hotels, cruises, and in 46 years I traveled to 186 countries. I was allowed to live onboard and basically extend any service, any dream that a resident had.

monaco yacht show stand

What’s the difference between this superyacht and the World ?

The World is now 23 years old. She was created in the late ’80s. She looks like a cruise ship. And the  Ulyssia is a yacht — the designer says this is his masterpiece.

We never had many amenities on the World . Here, we have a deli. We have a library with a card and games room. We have a table-tennis room. We have two paddle-tennis courts all inside, a multipurpose sports deck up there where the helicopters are, two hangers, two submarines to go down to the ocean, seven restaurants.

Then, we have this inflatable marina off the back of the boat. Imagine we’re near Bermuda. It’s a beautiful day. The sea is calm. We stop and we inflate this — it takes an hour — and we have tenders. You can go diving right there off the ship. The sea is yours. This marina is something the World could never ever have done, because there’s no space in the boat to keep that. The World was more elderly, a bit elderly retired. This is way younger. Why? Because we have so many amenities and offer adventure. Here, we are offering fewer apartments with more space. The balconies are huge. Luxury, for them, means space, time and getting whatever they wish, whenever, wherever. Freedom.

monaco yacht show stand

Freedom , in a contained location —

Yes, and in a safe environment, completely protected against any danger. If a resident says, “I want to bring my family there, I want to be safe, I want to have no worries,” safety needs to be core to us. They want the freedom to do what they do at home — to run around with suits, jewelry. And if they are smart enough to say, “I want to go and see real scenarios, not luxury hotels,” they can go places where there’s no luxury and see how the world really works. That’s what this community wants.

Sounds like a security nightmare.

We will hire ex-Mossad physically, to be on the ship. On the World , we partnered with Marine Guard, one of the world’s best safety and security companies . It provides technical and physical support. And whenever we went to critical places — for example, when we went through the Gulf of Aden, I brought in Israeli snipers to come on the boat. Nobody, no pirate on earth can come in past them. Then on shore excursions, we have every form of security that you can imagine. Satellite images. Images underwater, over water. When we went to Antarctica, to the Northwest Passage — meeting with the Inuits, the Aborigines — you need people who know them. You need people who safeguard you. In the Antarctic, you are only allowed to go with Zodiacs to the beaches. You need people who know that, who know the sea lions, the penguins. We bring them onboard — 20 or 25 people who know everything about every area. And when we do expeditions, we bring on EYOS, one of the greatest expedition leaders in the world, which goes to places like the Titanic .

Is this, like the Titanic , experimental in any way?

No, there are similar yachts. But in four years, when she will hopefully leave port, she will be the greenest yacht of this size ever built. And at that time, we may build for whatever is available in terms of fuel, whether it’s methanol or nuclear. There are vessels already going nuclear, military vessels.

But isn’t this all risky?

It’s the opposite. You will see more and more environments like this at sea. Why? Because you can escape anything! If there’s an outbreak in New York, a big virus, you just won’t go there. If there’s a war there, you just don’t go there. If there’s a storm, you don’t go there.

So this will be a way for the global elite, basically, to pay to avoid any problem.

Is it going to be a one percent community? Yes, obviously, but they need to do good around the world, otherwise they cannot come to the community.

Imagine the following. We will have a medical center onboard. We have MRI machines. We have a dentistry. Our doctors, when we go to the west coast of Africa, to Senegal, we can have our doctors go out and help. And as we go around the world, we will help to map the ocean floor. We’ll have tools available to measure and send these to oceanic institutions that then take this data. So we are helping to make the world a better place. And that’s the legacy.

How are you going to gauge whether the people who want to live here also want to do good?

There’s a very tough background check before being allowed to buy. So can it be that a Colombian drug lord or a Russian weapons dealer comes and says, “Oh, I’m going to take ten?” No, that can’t happen. We’re not a community for people from mainland China who don’t speak English and want to spit around. Or aggressive Russians. We are not a community for sheikhs from any Arab countries. And I have nothing against the Chinese and Russians. I love everybody. I’ve been everywhere. But they just don’t fit here, and they won’t come. We want like-minded golf players, tennis players, joggers, bikers, F1 drivers.

We will have roughly 30 to 35 percent Europeans, 30 to 35 percent North Americans, including from Canada, possibly a few from Mexico City, a few from São Paulo. Then we have about 20 percent from Australia, South Africa, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan. Then we expect to have about 10 percent of people from all over, we don’t know where. It could be anywhere.

They’ll need a certain amount of money to get into this boat and I assume, therefore, that you can’t be that picky.

No, we can’t. But we try to be. It’s a balance. We meet them three, four, five, six times. We invite them, show them something, then they say, “Oh, I trust these people. I believe in them.” It’s a slow process.

Can a buyer get kicked off?

Oh, absolutely.

What’s the justice system?

There’s a board that’s voted in and we have our chairman on the board. Almost all of the members are people who have either been on yachts, have their own yacht, or have led organizations.

If people have their own yachts, why would they sign up for this?

They might have a beautiful yacht of a hundred meters, but they can’t hire all these education guides, explorers all the time. We have 22 guest suites. Imagine we’re coming to Japan. Blossom season. We bring an ex Japanese prime minister onboard, maybe a three-star Michelin chef. We bring them on, let’s say, three weeks before. And they lecture. We can have experts speak about anything. Volcanoes, health and wellness, food and beverage, politics, archeology.

And they have you, who’s been to 186 countries.

Exactly. So when I do speak to people who want to buy and invite them for lunch or a coffee, they listen because they know, Oh, this guy has been there. You don’t need to tell them something that you think can happen. You can actually tell them a story. When I went to Antarctica the last time, in 2009, on the way back to the Zodiac, I am walking and these big elephant seals — those are the big guys, like three tons and ten feet long — and all of a sudden, out of nowhere, there’s a big sound like MWUGHOWUGH and a big one came up, out of the sand. I stood there frozen. These are moments when you think, Is this really happening to me? How fortunate, how lucky am I to be able to experience moments like this? And all the wealthy people say the same.
