Sunrise Irimari Yacht Review: Turning up the Volume

Launched in 2015, the 63m custom motor yacht Irimari was built in 2015 by Sunrise Yachts. The yacht features exterior design by the designer Espen Oeino, while her interior was created by the studio Focus Yacht Design

Leaving the beautifully appointed headquarters of Sunrise, we head down with its majority shareholder Herbert Baum to check out Irimari yacht on the water just a few hundred yards away. ‘I’m certainly still enjoying the process of yacht building,’ Herbert says as we pull up to the dock. ‘Though it’s a long process, for a ‘non-native shipbuilder’ to see designs and metal plates transform into a finished yacht is so incredibly satisfying.’

On board the new Sunrise Irimari

Herbert’s enthusiasm is infectious as we admire the profile of Sunrise Yachts Irimari as she sits shimmering on the dock. Angular lines meld with the softer dome of her superstructure with enough juxtaposition to avoid complete masculinity and create an androgynous aesthetic. From the dock we noted the oversized portholes on the lower deck are exaggerated even further on the main deck, hinting at spectacular views from the on-deck master staterooms that made us eager to explore further.

As Irimari yacht was berthed alongside, we boarded via the starboard shell door that lowered to create a huge over-sea terrace and revealed an open-air waterfront gym. Small details like the heated mirror in the accompanying head to prevent fogging indicate Sunrise’s particular attention to detail.

Occupying center stage of the engine room itself are the twin MTU 12V 4000-series M63 power units, driving Sunrise Yachts Irimari to a top speed of 16-knots. Carefully arranged around the remaining space to allow easy access are supplementary systems like the triple GMPP 220kW generators and an 110kW emergency generator from the same company. Making our way up into the cockpit we take a moment to check out the decking, only to discover it is not teak, as it would appear to the casual observer, but a resin compound that mimics teak.

Irimari’s interior

‘We tested several different deck options, including real teak, synthetic teak and this compound,’ explains Herbert. ‘We discovered that this solution remains coolest when exposed to direct sunlight, is easiest to maintain and is a very cost-effective method.’

From the oversized cockpit one enters… OK, before we enter the main salon and cover the yachts interior I need to make one thing clear. Throughout the remainder of the feature you need to take it as read that the interior proportions of Sunrise Yachts Irimari are like nothing else you’ve experienced on a yacht of this length. The owner’s suite in particular is so vast that, unless one is chronically claustrophobic and usually resides in a stadium, I really couldn’t fathom why one would need a larger space.

Anyway, in the generously proportioned salon the surrounding scenery pours in through the floor to ceiling glazing and one can only imagine the impact when the yacht is anchored in a more salubrious and scenic environment. Guest accommodation on the lower deck is arranged around the central lobby with double cabins to starboard and twins to port.

The twins are convertible into doubles by sliding the beds together and both feature Pullman bunks, making it a versatile arrangement ideal in charter situations. The level of completion in the guest cabins is excellent and demonstrates quality and forethought with high-end fittings. Moving up the bridge deck we once again find the level of facilities one would expect on a yacht of considerably longer length. Aft of the main deck one finds Irimari’s upper salon and cinema that again features floor to ceiling glazing.

When the party really gets going however, the aft deck terrace with its large bar, al fresco dining and wide-open space with deep comfortable deck furniture is the place to be, before perhaps heading up to the sundeck. The sundeck is… well, of Sunrise Yachts Irimari proportions! Subtly divided between five different zones the entire compliment of guests, and their guests, can find space to sunbathe, dine, swim, lounge, take coffee, shower, belly-up to the bar or flop on a sunpad–all at the same time.

With access behind the bar directly into the crew access that runs from the main to sundeck on the portside, service has been carefully considered on this yacht too. Happily, concealed under the foredeck, Sunrise Irimari carries two personal watercraft, two SeaBobs and the rescues tender to compliment the primary tenders found in her garage. While sitting on the sundeck I muse over Irimari’s interior.

While the completion level is uncontestably to a very high standard and some of the details like etched glass, cross-stitched leather panels, copper inserts, lighting and the screens in the stairwell atrium are both innovative and truly enchanting, it is probably fair to say that it doesn’t meet the uber-decadent feel of extraordinary yachts like Kismet, Solandge and some of the launches by Oceanco, Heesen and Feadship.

Having completed our tour I asked Herbert what were the major challenges and advancements Sunrise had made as a turkish shipyard in the build of Irimari and he was happy to fill me in on some detail. ‘In engineering terms the bow thruster unit we used on this project was new for us as it is the Epod system, so the electrical motor is inside the hub itself. This system is considerably quieter and the water around the unit absorbs vibration. It all helps moving forward as our next project, Hull 561, is the 187’ (57m) diesel-electric, so in one way the bow-thruster contributed experience in preparedness  for that. Finally, the huge amount of full height glazing on Irimari required engineering solutions we’d not encountered before on this scale and these create challenges too.’

As we leave Irimari yacht, Herbert joins me in taking one last glance back at her as the sun sets over Sunrise’s latest launch. ‘You know,’ sighs Herbert almost ruefully, ‘it is times like this I almost regret not owning my own yacht again.’ It was a sentiment we shared. If owning Sunrise Yachts Irimari were an option, it would certainly be one we’d consider seriously.

Irimari: The adventurous new Sunrise built for fun

Cruising along the southern Turkish coast, with the Taurus mountains in the background, superyacht  Irimari  seems perfectly at home. Like those impressive peaks rising imperiously inland, the 63 metre yacht is a towering structure, the master of all she surveys.

And there are other qualities she shares with the local terrain. " Irimari is steady like a rock,” her captain Heimo Tauern noted after returning from the first sea trials, which took place just a few miles offshore, “even empty and without the stabilisers.”

Irimari’s  maiden voyage through the Rhodes Canal confirmed his assessments. “Even with three-metre waves on her nose, she travels quiet and sturdy,” he says. Swells are no trouble at all and she smoothly reaches a top speed of 16.5 knots.

Irimari is an impressive vessel with six decks (including the tank deck) and a gross tonnage of more than 1,463. The steel-hulled yacht, with its aluminium superstructure supporting large expanses of glass, displaces 1,170 tonnes fully loaded.

Exterior design is by Espen Øino , who, from the groundbreaking superyacht  Skat of more than a decade ago to the recent Ester III , both built at Lürssen , does show an affinity for the bold and the bountiful. The designer is quick to point out that all the vessels his studio has produced look different. He is, after all, also known for the slippery AeroCruisers, built at Danish Yachts , and the slim arrows of SilverYachts . But he admits that he’s particularly fond of Irimari’s styling. “These are lines I like,” he says. “I very much like these ample glass surfaces and beautiful views from inside.”

The design evidently appeals to others, too. Irimari is the second of two orders Sunrise Yachts received for this impressive 63 metre hull ( the first is in the late stages of construction ).

Tauern, who also served as the build captain, provided input that resulted in several changes to luxury yacht  Irimari’s exterior. While a captain’s practical sense may not always mesh with a designer’s artistic vision, the collaboration worked. “[Øino] listened to me carefully, which is impressive enough,” says the captain.

Most of the requests Tauern made had to do with the yacht’s operations. “On my suggestion, Irimari was realised with wing stations for the bridge and wing stations for the anchor crew, a small gangboard on the stern, a fixed foremast and — well, this part Espen didn’t like at all — two TV domes fitted on the wheelhouse roof,” Tauern says. He also proposed making the guest cabin layout a bit more flexible so two of the cabins could convert into one large suite.

It may be that the two big domes installed on the forward section of the superstructure were unavoidable. Irimari’s owner, who’s had yachts before, loves spending time on board; quick jaunts to shore for lunch or to seek entertainment are not his style. Once aboard, he stays on board. Consequently, he appreciated the abundant space the design afforded, allowing him to create a high-tech games room and an up-to-date onboard cinema lounge featuring a 90-inch screen.

And since Irimari feels like a ship, he wanted her to sound like one, too. Herbert Baum, co-founder of Sunrise Yachts, pointed out the air horn compressor on the gleaming two-level engine room as he showed me around a few weeks before her delivery. “I was sitting in my office one day when I heard what I thought was a cruise ship. Then I realised, it was Irimari! ” he says. The impressive and harmonious sound comes from a five-trumpet F-3 Chimetone air horn, made in Wisconsin by Kahlenberg.

The advantage of seeing a yacht before every hatch and panel has been placed and sealed is the ability to assess the care that the build team has taken with details seldom seen once the boat is finished. And Baum delighted in showing off the undersides of Irirmari - Sunrise’s largest and most technologically advanced yacht to date - the trays with the perfectly aligned wires running through them; the polished chrome finishes; the sturdy doors and hatches; the fully painted compartments housing the watermakers or the firefighting equipment...

Irimari will be well suited as a yacht for charter , with her professional-grade galley, practical clamshell doors for outside deliveries, extensive food and wine storage (aboard is a refrigerator each for red, white and sparkling wines) and a professional laundry with adjacent linen cupboard, among many other well thought-out features.

The yacht’s massive transom door doubles as one of the best superyacht beach clubs . Side doors on Irimari reveal housing for the 8.5-metre custom tender in the port-side garage, and the workout area adjacent to the steam room on the starboard side. All the decks, from the beach club to the sundeck (about 685 square metres in total), are expertly finished with a synthetic material by Bolidt that mimics teak, as on many cruise ships

Several companies shared the responsibility of outfitting the interior of Irimari : Sunrise Yachts, Ekinoks Interiors and Ulutaş . The craftsmen of Sunrise Yachts built the furniture for the mess and crew cabins, which are impeccably finished with bedside hook-ups to charge handheld devices and individual screens. A specific request of the captain’s was the dedicated internet lounge, separate from the crew mess. Finished with a light-hued wood veneer, it has the feel of a cosy chalet.

Partly because of her large windows and extensive A/V equipment – there is an interactive games room on the top deck and a five-metre video wall – Irimari demanded the best in climate control. Noske-Kaeser, a German company that supplies vessels from cruise ships to submarines, handled the yacht’s air-conditioning system, which pipes perfectly chilled air throughout the vessel, including the three A/V racks. The Raytheon Anschütz integrated bridge is both handsome and practical; its walkaround console design allows the captain to get close to the vertical windshield with binoculars in hands. Naturally, the yacht also has more hi-tech watch equipment, including infrared cameras.

For all her strength and boldness, the boat is a good example of a successful balancing act. Out of the water Irimari , with her prominent and bulbous bow that came courtesy of architect Unique Yacht Design , reveals herself to be massive. However, the vast expanse of glass that cuts a diagonal swath across her superstructure contributes to her graceful lines on the water. And her interior, by Focus Yacht Design , is an exercise in subtlety, with oval and rounded shapes tempering a streamlined, contemporary feel. The designers had a rare opportunity “to start with a clean sheet of paper”, says Christian Schaefer, one of the founders of the German interior design company. “The owners wanted something fresh and new, and they were willing to try something unusual and unexpected,” he says.

The owner of Irimari likes copper, and strips of that or other material mimicking its colour and sheen have been incorporated into the design. It forms linear patterns on bulkheads or accents in marble floors and furniture.

Wood serves as another consistent design cue throughout the yacht. “A selection of light and dark woods such as bleached oak and macassar forms a common structure that leads through an array of maritime motifs,” Schaefer explains. Bubbles rise on the video wall surrounded by a “kelp forest” created on the lacquered walls of the main staircase. A shoal of fish scatters over the owners’ bed while clouds billow over the VIP cabin bed. These ideas are translated in an elegant and sophisticated way.

The risk of having a blank slate is, as Focus Yacht Design puts it, that you use space “as a field for experimentation with an abundance of different shapes, colours or materials”. That’s not the case here; the décor on Irimari is consistent without ever being boring. One of the few areas on board with a highly graphic feel is the owner’s bathroom, finished with a veneered white marble from Turkey. The oval tub at the room’s centre brings everything into balance.

Focus Yacht Design also custom-designed pieces of furniture that accent and complement the overall theme. A round table installed forward of the saloon’s entrance foyer highlights the patterns on the marble floor and echoes the style of the ceiling fixture. It also stands on its own as a beautiful and intricate piece that combines leather, metal and wood.

Sunlight flowing from the large windows and architectural lighting underscore how well details on Irimari have been realised, down to the cross-stitches on leather panels applied to the upper saloon walls and copper leaf on the ceiling. The upper saloon doubles as the onboard cinema. The vast and well-lit space also has room for a white grand piano and one of six bars on board.

The hub for entertainment, however, is a deck above, in a glass-enclosed, air-conditioned space in the centre of the sundeck. On other yachts you might find a gym or a dining space here. On Irimari , however, it’s been specially designed for games, with several screens on the wall connected to the tables. “Everything is interactive and the screen can display absolutely anything the guests want to see; it could be images of the day or the yacht’s route,” says Ludovic Roche, sales manager for A/V installer Sambroni and Cie. “It’s all custom work, including the software.”

Irimari is only the third vessel to launch at Sunrise Yachts. The first two were 45 metre sisterships Africa and Atomic  - one of the few superyachts to be given as gifts . While both beautiful yachts, they did not quite reach the level of complexity that this much bigger vessel demands.

The two partners who founded the shipyard, Baum and Guillaume Roché, talk of a quantum leap and the advent of “Sunrise 2.0” and it’s clear that Irimari has them excited about the future. “We’re raising our game,” declares Roché.

They’re counting on Irimari being the foundation for this potential growth. And she will be. After all, she is as solid as that Turkish rock.

She has a full-displacement hull and reaches a top speed of 17 knots, while her cruising speed is 12 knots with a range of 5,000 nautical miles.

Her interior design comes from Bremen-based Focus Yacht Design .

The 67' Hatteras Cockpit Motoryacht features a 3 stateroom, 3 head, full beam galley down layout with a spacious aft deck and over-sized factory cockpit.

The forward stateroom features upper/lower berths, hanging locker, recent television, head and shower.

Up two steps is the large U-Shaped galley with dinette. Continuing aft and down is the pantry and laundry with stackable apartment sized washer and dryer.

Further aft, the guest stateroom is to port with a custom queen berth, hanging locker, and recent television. Opposite is the guest head and shower stall.

The master suite has a queen berth, 2 full size cedar lined closets, and a spacious head which features a jacuzzi tub. The master suite also boasts a new flat screen television, window treatments, and refinished wood surfaces. On the main deck you will notice the very tasteful custom etched glass which separates the pilothouse from the salon. The salon features an L-Shaped sofa, coffee table, 2 swivel chairs, end table and large chest of drawers. The window treatments are renewed and the carpeting is fresh. 

The entertainment center include a new flat screen television, Bose surround sound and Sony receiver. All three staterooms have updated TV.

Entering the salon from the aft deck through the hinged door one finds two barrel chairs to starboard and an L-Shaped leather sofa to port. Forward is a 4 place circular dining table and further forward is the helm station which is separated from the living area by an etched glass panel with the TV inset into. Wall to wall carpeting, custom halogen lighting with wood mini-blinds create a warm yet modern look.

Recently upgraded galley features high-end stainless appliances and new teak and holly galley sole. Galley is down from the salon.

There are 3 staterooms, 3 heads.

The master is aft with a centerline King berth. There is a tub shower in the head and a newer Tekma quiet flush head. Newer flat panel TV.

Moving forward past the two engine rooms, one finds the midship guest stateroom to port. Originally this was a twin berth stateroom. It has been modified to a single queen berth mounted athwartship and features a newer flat panel TV. Across to starboard is the guest head that also serves as the day head for the boat. There is a separate shower stall here.

All the way forward is the third stateroom featuring two over under single berths and a private head with a separate shower.

The side decks are covered by the flybridge overhangs, and access is by the two aft wing doors and the port and starboard pilothouse doors. Decks are fiberglass non skid.There is a sun pad for the bow as well as guest seating.

The most popular feature of the vessel may well be the aft deck. It is under the cover of the extended hardtop and features port and starboard wing doors and a center access door leading to the custom ladder to the cockpit.

Forward is a large wet bar with a full sized ice maker, sink and great cabinet storage. There are stereo speakers and a clock and barometer.

By placing the aft door to the cockpit in the center Hatteras has allowed for 2 large matching L-Shaped settees port and starboard each with their own cocktail table.

The salon opens to this area with a swinging door to create on great open space all the way to the lower helm. This aft deck area is further protected by an Eisenglass enclosure.

This is a factory 7' cockpit which is bigger than most others built by Hatteras. Features include cockpit engine controls, a transom door with boarding gate, cockpit coaming pads  and fiberglass non skid decks.There is generous below deck lazarette storage where the spare props and shaft are stored. There is a custom center ladder leading up to the aft deck.

There are matching fiberglass cabinets port and starboard on each side of aft deck ladder. The port side cabinet has the cockpit controls and two cabinet storage areas below. The starboard side has two matching Wolf electric grill tops and two storage cabinets beneath. Between these two there is a Frigibar freezer chest.

Aft there is a hot and cold shower, and a raw water wash down. The fiberglass swim platform has a 4 step dive ladder and receivers for dinghy whip standoffs. There are rod holders in the gunnels.

The flybridge is accessed from the pilothouse by a modern sloping ladder/staircase. The helm is forward and center with 2 Pompanette helm chairs. To starboard is a fiberglass cabinet with storage beneath and a sink on top.

Aft there is a full U-Shaped seating arrangement with full cushions and a fixed table.  Aft of this seating area is the boat deck with a Marquip Dinghy Crane and  Dinghy Chocks (The dinghy is excluded from the sale of the vessel).
