Interview: My Yacht Group Co-Founder Nicholas Frankl

my yacht monaco

The demand for one-of-a-kind experiences, bucket list adventures, and exclusive in the flesh gatherings with like-minded people seem to be at an all-time high, especially among HNW and (U)WNW individuals, whose exacting standards require expertise honed over many years by those who understand this breed of clientele.

My Yacht Group (MYG) brings that kind of savvy know-how, finely tuned over multiple decades in a broad swath of interests ranging from automotive racing and concours to art fairs and Hollywood academies, international yacht shows to curated astronaut dinners. MYG creates turnkey hospitality and experiences – primarily aboard superyachts, naturally – for luxury brand partners and their top clients, plus a hand-picked global selection of discerning guests; these events provide a unique setting for networking and socialising at some of the most prestigious annual global gatherings.

Monaco Life sat down with Nicholas Frankl, MYG Founder, CEO, and three-time Olympian, to get the inside scoop on the secret sauce to “Connecting the World’s Most Interesting People”, a phrase that defines their mission.

Nicholas Frankl’s love of Formula 1 began when he was a child. He participated in the 1994, 1998, and 2002 Olympic games as both driver and Captain of the Hungarian bobsled team, and his passion for fast cars and sport continues through his luxury MYG’s events.

Monaco Life: What personal convictions and interests do you carry through your life and by extension into your business?

Nicholas Frankl: I grew up respecting my elders, working hard, giving back, and not simply expecting things to be handed to me, or feeling entitled to a particular lifestyle without working hard to attain it. We started from zero and qualified for the Olympics in one year. That took hard work and dedication, and I am incredibly proud to be part of the Olympic community and to have earned the right to include the designation OLY after my name.

A charitable element is always an essential component of our events. We have helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for our charity partners over the years, both through onboard auctions and pledging, by donating our experiences to charity galas, and so on. We raise awareness – to a unique audience – for their missions, whether it’s ecological efforts by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, deploying superyachts as a first line of humanitarian aid to hard-hit coastal areas as with YachtAid Global, or Blue Angels Foundation providing essential help to veterans.

I always strive to add value to everything I do, by under-promising and overdelivering. Formula 1 has been a large part of my life, attending from a young age with my automotive journalist father, then later as a photographer and writer myself, as well as part of the Ferrari Team in 1996-1999 with Michael Schumacher and Eddie Irvine driving. For the past 16+ years, I have produced an extraordinary superyacht experience at the Monaco Grand Prix.   So, my love of speed is in my DNA! I’m also lucky enough to test drive some incredible cars – Lamborghinis, Ferraris, Paganis – and I’m a VFR-rated private pilot. (VFR stands for Visual Flight Rules)

Your events are global, tying into elite gatherings everywhere, from yacht shows and art fairs in Miami to the Cannes Film Festival, Concours d’Elégance in Monterey, CA, and the Grand Prix and Monaco Yacht Show. What sets your events apart?

Our events have always been a direct reflection of demand. We started in Monaco at the Grand Prix and we are celebrating our 17 th year this May. That formula of bringing like-minded individuals together in a relaxed yet exclusive setting has proven itself whether we’re in Monaco, Miami, St. Bart’s, or Hong Kong. We continue to expand on our (U)HNW summits that provide a unique platform for companies and brands to present to an eminently qualified, highly curated, and hand-selected collection of guests. Equally, our non-yacht event, My Yacht ® Club, our pop-up VIP nightlife experience in Austin during the Grand Prix, brought a Monaco level of sophistication to a new audience and proved highly successful for over a decade, which was very gratifying.

We – my twin sister, Annabelle, who is COO, and I – just hosted another curated ‘night before’ investor dinner in Miami during the Grand Prix weekend, followed by the only – so we’re told – superyacht party on the Saturday night aboard the 185ft research vessel Gene Chaser, which makes for a unique setting. I mean, where else can you sip Whispering Angel rosé or Enchanted Rock vodka cocktails, enjoy incredible food, watch our aerialist perform from the yacht’s crane with the Miami skyline in the background, and then go and get a brain or retina scan in the onboard, fully working lab? Our guests loved it!

my yacht monaco

You have close ties to the space industry and space tourism. Tell us more, and would you go to space?

I would go in a heartbeat! My love of aviation and space has been present throughout my life. Being an investor in the space sector, and closely aligned with both a significant space company – Axiom Space – and a newer start-up – Radian Aerospace – who are set to revolutionise the industry with their single-stage-to-orbit spaceplane and are currently raising a $100m ‘A’ round, it’s a fascinating time. I can’t wait to see where the next decade will take us.

When you’re in the presence of exceptional people like Astronauts, what are the burning questions you ask them about their experience?

I am privileged to call a six-time astronaut my friend – Commander Michael Lopez-Alegria; he is an exceptional human being. Even our first meeting – introduced through Buzz Aldrin – was terrific! Learning about the experience of being thrust into space is riveting. Interestingly, though, from having spoken and spent time with several astronauts, primarily Commander Michael-Lopez Alegría, the overarching theme is one of connectivity: the bonds and friendships formed by training for and completing missions, spending often extended periods with your fellow adventurers in a metal can that’s hurtling around the globe at 17,500mph! It seems this is very similar to what we all seek and strive to attain at all our events, whether a dinner for 20 people or a yacht party for 200+.

my yacht monaco

What’s next for you?

We’re always excited to do something fresh, whether a new event location or brand partner. Both evenings in Miami, we showcased a 12-foot scale model of ‘Ulyssia’, the new 1,000+ foot luxury residence ship with which I’m involved. It’s an incredible project: designed by Espen Øino, who is, of course, legendary in super and mega-yacht design and brings those same lines to Ulyssia. She will boast 140 luxury residences ranging from 1,400 to 15,000 sq. ft. and will circumnavigate the globe. The amenities are out of this world; Chenot spa, full medical facilities, a vast marina, two submarines, two large helicopters, five restaurants, guest chefs, renowned guest speakers, flying simulator, Padel tennis, incredible expeditions, you name it. We are taking applications and reservations now and will cut steel in approximately nine months.

And, of course, we are currently prepping for our 17 th My Yacht at the 81 st Monaco Grand Prix, with our trackside yacht and entire weekend program. It’s our signature event of the year, and it’s been gratifying to host so many incredible guests, including His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco, and partners aboard over the years. I’ve been going to that race in many capacities – spectator, photographer, journalist, host – for over 35 years, so it’s a special weekend from a commercial and personal standpoint.

From all the must-see superyachts to the best places to party after the show, get the complete insider’s guide to the Monaco Yacht Show 2022 .

Running from 28 September to 1 October, the Monaco Yacht Show 2022 will be attracting a fleet of superyachts and thousands of attendees to the Côte d'Azur for the 31st edition of the prestigious boat show.

For four days, Port Hercules will be a hive of activity as thousands of prospective clients and industry players descend on the French Riviera to explore what’s on display on the water and along the stands. Hundreds of exhibitors will be showing off their products and services, with top shipyards , brokerage houses and marine and luxury lifestyle stalls in attendance, along with brand-new areas being unveiled at this year's show.

What’s in store at this year’s show?

Yachts in port at the MYS 2021

This year the show will unveil its brand-new Adventure Area and Sustainability Hub, alongside its popular Design & Innovation Hub and dockside areas committed to the exhibition of superyachts and tenders.

Sustainability Hub

With a renewed focus on sustainability and environmental protection initiatives, the Monaco Yacht Show 2022 will be unveiling its brand new exhibition space dedicated to the research and development of sustainable solutions in yachting.

The Sustainability Hub will also host a variety of exhibitions relating to green renewable solutions and pro-environmental projects in yachting.

Yacht Design and Innovation Hub

Complementing the Sustainability Area will be the popular Yacht Design and Innovation Hub, where the world’s most renowned yacht designers convene to showcase their latest projects, with various presentations on design and eco-responsible projects in yachting taking place in a conference room upstairs (free access). This year, the Yacht Design & Innovation Hub also welcomes the historic exhibitors of the Designer Gallery along the Louis Chiron bend of Port Hercules.

Adventure Area

A black and white image of a woman standing on an all-terrain vehicle with a superyacht in the background

Another new zone for 2022, visitors to the Adventure Area will find a huge array of tenders, all-terrain vehicles, nautical gadgets and equipment. These will be showcased in conjunction with a wide range of activities and services targeting the up-coming generation of superyacht clientele in response to the increase in demand by discerning yacht travellers seeking ever-more thrilling adventures and unique yachting experiences.

Dockside Area

The new Adventure Area will be located within the Dockside Area, home to the afloat exhibition of motor yachts and tenders on the Quai Antoine 1er, Port Hercule.

Please note that the Dockside area is only accessible to Discover, Sapphire and press passes on Wednesday September 28, with access to the general public from Thursday onwards.

Sailing Yacht Area

As in previous years, this area will be situated along the Quai l’Hirondelle, where visitors will be able to step aboard some of the most innovative and technologically advanced sailing yachts in the world, as well as meeting some of the esteemed builders and designers who help to create the magic.

Sapphire Experience

Two attractive couples aboard a private tender at the Monaco Yacht Show

Introduced for the first time last year, the Sapphire Experience is a bespoke tour program for visitors interested in renting or buying a yacht, with a concierge team dedicated to creating a bespoke program of events tailored to take advantage of all there is to experience at the show in true VIP fashion; including scheduled visits on board yachts, attendance at gala evenings or private cocktails on board various luxury vessels. There is also an official Sapphire tender and courtesy car service.

In addition, there are dedicated VIP entrances and lounges for convenience and relaxation throughout the show.

How to get around the Monaco Yacht Show 2022

Monaco Yacht Show 2022 map

The show takes place entirely in Port Hercules, but there will also be a number of yachts available for viewing at anchor outside the port. A water taxi is available throughout the show, with seven pick-up and drop-off points conveniently located across the marina.

The official opening times for the 2022 Monaco Yacht Show are: 10.30am-6.30pm every day, except on Saturday when the doors open at 10am and close at 6pm.

What is the official MYS 2022 superyacht lineup?

Currently, with over 130 yachts set to attend this year’s show, including 74 yachts making their debuts in Monaco, the show promises plenty of standout vessels available to view.

One of the most exciting new yachts will be Lurssen’s 115m/378ft motor yacht AHPO . A recent addition to the charter fleet, she will be drawing in plenty of attention with her Nuvolari Lenard exterior styling and palatial interiors.

Charter yacht AHPO

On the same dock, Golden Yacht’s latest offering in the shape of 88m (289ft) superyacht Project X will also be causing a buzz. Freshly delivered, show-goers shouldn’t miss the opportunity to step on board to admire her beautiful Massari-designed interiors, as well as her 7.5-meter by 3-meter glass-enclosed swimming pool on her aft main deck and vast beach club featuring comfortable lounging area and bar, alongside a wellness suite with Hammam and Finnish Sauna.

Charter yacht PROJECT X

Another star of the show will be the 85m (279ft) luxury explorer yacht VICTORIOUS , who wowed visitors last year with her distinctive sleek lines culminating in a 2-meter bowsprit and impressive array of charter-rich features and family-friendly amenities, not to mention the luxury Rolls Royce perched on her helideck bow!

The 75m (247ft) superyacht KENSHÕ will also be making waves for those keen to experience her zen-calm interiors up-close. Launched earlier this year, the innovative vessel redefines the concept of space and layout, providing guests with the ultimate luxurious platform to relax, entertain and socialize onboard.

Where to eat at the Monaco Yacht Show 2022

In Port Hercules, there are a variety of options available for snacks and refreshments, including the Upper Deck Lounge bar & restaurant run by the renowned Fairmont Monte-Carlo, as well as the Sapphire Lounge – a VIP bar and dining experience open exclusively to Sapphire badge holders – both located near the Parvis Piscine entrance.

Monaco itself has no shortage of restaurants to suit every occasion and palate during the show. For something more casual, Rue Princesse Caroline is lined with different restaurants that are well-suited to a light bite.

In the evenings, COYA Monte Carlo is where the in-crowd head for Latin-American fusion and a warm reception. The cocktail menu is expansive, so be sure to try one of their specialties and soak up the buzzy vibes as the evening wears on.

If it’s a sophisticated meal you’re after, Nobu is the ultimate choice. Expect a luxurious backdrop, a refined Japanese menu and a sensational taste experience among fellow show-goers.

Where to party after the Monaco Yacht Show 2022

As ever, Buddha-Bar will be one of the most popular venues for post-show partying in Monaco. The restaurant-bar crossover is a regular stop-off for those looking to dine and dance to the soundtrack of live DJ sets.

Twiga has a similar vibe, with a stellar menu coupled with an unrivalled club scene later in the evenings. Expect Methusalems of champagne topped with sparklers, dazzling entertainment and a no-holds-barred party vibe.

Twiga will be hosting plenty of Monaco Yacht Show-themed parties over the course of the show, so you’d be remiss not to pay the venue a visit, even if it’s just for a cocktail on the terrace.

For a true taste of French Riviera party life, look no further than Jimmy’z. This iconic club will be in full swing over the course of the Monaco Yacht Show, and will be amping up the entertainment with live performances from dance troupes and deck-spinning DJs.

Where to relax after the Monaco Yacht Show 2022

After the show, take the time to unwind and soak up the last of the Mediterranean sun.

Nikki Beach Monte Carlo is still going strong on the roof of the Fairmont Hotel, and offers poolside lounging and a summery soundtrack throughout the day, offset by spectacular views over Port Hercules and the yachts at anchor opposite the marina.

my yacht monaco

A little outside Monaco in the small town of Eze lies one of the best-kept secrets in the South of France. Anjuna Plage occupies a thin sliver of beach, and boasts a premier restaurant, boutique shop and a laid-back vibe that makes it a fan favourite. Best accessed by yacht, it also has a roster of A-list clientele.

Where to visit after the Monaco Yacht Show 2022

The French Riviera is one of the most beautiful regions in the Mediterranean and has no end of things to see and do. In Monaco, visitors can explore the decadent Monte Carlo casino, browse the Private Collection of Antique Cars of H.S.H. Prince Rainier III or admire the incredible selection of marine life at the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco.

Afterwards, stop by neighbouring Menton to visit Mirazur, a restaurant that was named the Best in the World for 2019.  Then, pay a visit to the Val Rahmen Exotic Gardens for an afternoon of botanical bliss.

my yacht monaco

Head over to Nice for a day of sightseeing and walking the cobbled streets of the city, taking the time to explore the famous Matisse Museum and the pink palace of Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild.

Those looking to travel even further afield can stop by the spa at Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes or take a boat ride out to the Lérins Islands  outside the bay of Cannes , where you will find the famous Abbey and the superyacht hotspot of La Guerite, a beach club and restaurant on the island.

An interview with ‘My Yacht Group’ Founder Nicholas Frankl

By Paul Joseph

Now in its 12th year, My Yacht Monaco is an exclusive four-day experience that takes place during the Monaco Grand Prix. During the event, discerning guests and luxury brand partners are invited to enjoy an extraordinary weekend of Formula One race viewing and luxury hospitality aboard a private yacht.

With this year’s Monaco event less than two months away, we took the opportunity to sit down with Nicholas Frankl, co-founder of My Yacht Group, to find out more about the prestigious occasion and the company’s burgeoning operations across the world.

Superyachts: Can you start by telling us a little about the company’s background and what inspired you to create it?

Nicholas Frankl: I was running the royal jeweller Asprey’s sponsorship with the Ferrari F1 Team from 96-99 when Michael Schumacher, Eddie Irvine and Jean Todt were with the team and quickly realized that the guests of the team’s commercial sponsors were from a totally different socio-economic background than these high net worth entrepreneurs, CEOs, Lords, Ladies, music and movie celebrities. It was clear that we had to create a like-minded & sophisticated experience with which all of our guests were comfortable, so I suggested a VIP yacht at the Monaco F1 GP. We hosted a fabulous evening aboard “Iroquois” with owner John Henry and It was a tremendous success!

Since those early days, as mass luxury has expanded with globalization around the world and true luxury occasions for UHNW guests have diminished with too much clutter trying to reach the 1% and 0.1%, we built on our annual signature My Yacht Monaco weekend experience with the generous support of some extraordinary guests, and have organically and annually expanded to more and new events globally.

What type of services do My Yacht Group provide and what events can people find you at around the world?

We connect the world’s most interesting people, using a super yacht to elevate the brand and guest experience whilst showcasing the yacht for sale or charter and whilst remaining focused on our category-exclusive, best in class brand partners’ objectives whether they be private Swiss banks like Vontobel, The Government of Bermuda and Bermuda Business Development Agency, Silver Arrows Marine, Bvlgari or Perrier Jouët to host & appreciate their top clients whilst also engaging with our own qualified Ultra High Net Worth attendees.  We concentrate on curating a very intimate and friendly environment that enables meaningful relationships to be established.

How would you describe your clients – do they share any common characteristics?

They are all successful in their chosen fields. From astronauts to surgeons, industrialists to financiers, photographers, models, actors, to musicians, artists, racing drivers, Olympic athletes, each one is a high achiever who appreciates being in like-minded, synergistic company.

Why do you think yachting and Formula One complement each other so well?

They are both at the pinnacle of human engineering and design. They represent the best in the automotive and nautical professions and attract a very similar clientele. There is no greater experience and ‘bucket list’ item than watching the Monaco Grand Prix weekend from the stern of our super yacht moored trackside on Quay Kennedy whilst sipping chilled Perrier Jouët and Whispering Angel rosé!

I understand you are planning an event for the America’s Cup Final in Bermuda later this year – what can you tell us about that?

Yes. In partnership with our global partner the Bermuda Government and BDA we will bring the magic & glamor of My Yacht to the America’s Cup for the Finals week, June 21-26, with two separate experiences.

Firstly a private invitation-only My Yacht Group reception for 120 America’s Cup and Bermuda dignitaries aboard a super yacht moored in Hamilton.  And secondly we will create My Yacht Club Bermuda, an exclusive nightclub experience on Front Street, right in downtown Hamilton, similar to our past 5 years of success with My Yacht Club at the Austin F1 GP (Oct 21-23).  Four nights only, private tables, bottle service, international DJs, live entertainment.

Are there any ambitions to expand the company over the coming years?

We are expanding every year! We were the first to host a super yacht reception at the famed Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance five years ago, the first to host one at Art Basel Hong Kong three years ago, and the first to establish the My Yacht Club at the Austin F1 Grand Prix.

We launched My Yacht St. Bart’s last December as the opening event of the high season on that little Caribbean paradise with our partners Bvlgari, Si Barth, Perrier Jouët and Gustavia Yacht Club, and benefitting Operation Healing Forces. It was such a hit we repeated it again for Valentine’s week and are making this an annual celebration with Bvlgari in December.

This is in parallel with our new Los Angeles yacht party on October 14th, plus Bermuda is taking our fabulous experiences to new audiences and locations, which is really exciting.  And for 2018, we’re also looking at Singapore and South America.
