Nick Cardoza Shares His Haute Secrets To Miami

Paula Carozzo

With a history of love for the ocean, Nick Cardoza never imagined to transform the yacht industry in South Florida. Cardoza was born in Naples, FL, but was raised near the water on the south coast of Massachusetts. After graduating from culinary school, he began his career as a chef in many parts of the world including Florence and Sardinia. While working in St. Barts, the young cook had a realization about his career and decided to return to his roots; the water. He became a chef for luxury yachts, and later transcended to earning a captain’s license. And since, he has sailed the Atlantic Ocean twice. After being mesmerized by a VanDutch in Miami, Cardoza’s persistence led him to meet the founders of luxurious yacht company, and was offered a position as a sales representative and later a captain. Within his first years in the business, the “yacht guy” realized that there was an inefficiency in the day charter market and decided to create a mobile app where users could book yachts to avoid closing of bookings due to miscommunication. The entrepreneur decided to name the project YachtLife , also known as the most popular hashtag you will see tagged by users while enjoying themselves on a boat. One star of Hot Yachts: Miami has had so many billionaire clients over the years that it's hard to pick a favourite – but Nick Cardoza does remember the most expensive yacht he ever sold.

In the new Paramount+ series, the top yacht brokers in Florida come together for plenty of high-profile deals, and plenty of drama.

Speaking exclusively to Daily Star, Nick refused to give the name of the boat as that would "give it away" – but he did tease: "It had a lot of features. It wasn’t just me selling it, there were other people involved. A lot of these deals are put together by a lot of different brokers at once.

"It was a lot. We had two tenders in the boat, we had a helicopter pad but no helicopter – we left that for somebody else.

Nick

"And one swimming pool, one large Jacuzzi; a lot of technology inside like automatic doors and a spa. But that’s as far as I’ll say!"

And speaking of his 'most hated' reputation, Nick says he's "better than a lot" of people – so he "doesn't care".

He explained: "I just do me. I focus on my business, I work hard, I party hard, I don’t care.

Nick

"Like, every day is a new day and sometimes I travel a lot, sometimes I stay here. I've sold more boats here in Miami than I’ve sold collectively in a long time.

"I don’t know about my reputation, I work really hard. I just launched a new company, so people can think what they want. I’m still better than a lot of them!"

Nick originally earned his nickname Mr Yachts from "always talking about yachts" with pals, joking: "They used to make fun of me when I would walk into a room, saying, 'oh here comes Mr Yachts!' and it just kinda stuck."

The star also isn't afraid to steal a potential client from under another broker's nose.

He admitted: "[I would] only under extenuating circumstances. I reserve that tactic for when other brokers p*** me off or don't play nice.

"It's like, the lion doesn't eat the hyenas unless they p*** him off enough, then it's all out war. I recently had a broker cut me out of a deal so I called the owner of every listing and gave them an offer they couldn't refuse to give me their listing.

"I'll broker a yacht for free just to f*** you back. Don't play with me."

Yachtlife Yacht Charter App

Based loosely on the Uber rideshare-app model, digital yacht charter service Yachtlife recently expanded into New York State’s most popular luxury destination. Kicking off with 13 yachts available in the Hamptons this summer—ranging from a simple 40-foot VanDutch to a stately 100-foot Hatteras scattered between Sag Harbor and the Montauk Yacht Club—Yachtlife is making weekends on a boat that much easier.

Further amplifying its convenience factor, the brand has partnered with Flightserve to provide private helicopter and seaplane connections from New York directly to your charter . Manhattan residents (or visitors) simply need to make their way to either the helicopter or seaplane terminal on the west side of the island, and within as little as an hour can be on board their charter. Given the sometimes-nauseating traffic found between the two locations, this additional service is a godsend.

With the evolution of app-based services like Uber and JetSmarter, it’s little surprise that Yachtlife has seen rampant growth in its first two years. Covering more than a dozen markets from Vancouver, Canada, to Greece and the South of France, cofounders Nick Cardoza and Patrick Curley saw a significant opportunity to modernize an otherwise archaic industry.

Yachtlife App Yacht Charter

“The yacht-charter business is still very much a traditional brick-and-mortar, high-touch business. There’s a lot that gets done based on relationships—which is great—but it’s also a fairly slow-moving industry.” says Patrick. “People are used to that instantaneous turnaround in the digital world, and we’ve streamlined the entire charter process. Paperwork is signed off digitally with a few taps, and in a lot of cases, we’ve been able to get a yacht ready to go within 1 to 2 hours. Our clients are demanding, and we are always up to the challenge.”

Yachtlife App Yacht Charter

Yachtlife is continuing its push into new markets with another announcement expected before the end of summer. Charters in the Hamptons start from as little as $1,400 a day, depending on yacht availability.
