Pandora International 22 Foot Fibreglass Bilge Keel Cruiser/racer

Bilge keel version of the Pandora international in good ready to sail condition - newly anti fouled. She is currently in Wrabness on the river Stour (Essex /Suffolk border). This is a lovely sea worthy boat. I have sailed her for the last three years (including a trip from the south coast to Essex)She has a main with 2 reefing points (still has the original roller gear as well) and a roller reefing Genoa. There is one full sized genoa and one heavier weight smaller one suitable for strong winds (they are quite easily swapped).

I am not selling with an outboard as the one I have is a short shaft and a long shaft would be better - the outboard sits in a hole in the cockpit and there is a filler piece for when the outboard is not present. (I can include the 5HP tohatsu air cooled for £150 if required) The boat has two for'ard berths with a sea toilet under (The inlet would need new springs to work, but I have always just used a gallon bottle of sea water and avoided the extra seacock!) There is a seat with table that can turn into a single berth in the cabin and a quarter berth on the other side.There is a sink fed from a water tank in the bow and a cooker and the top of this slides to make a reasonable sized chart table. She has cabin mounted LED navigation lights and a depth sounder/Log However the log is not working although it probably just needs a new impeller (~£7 when I bought the last one). Comes with adequate warps and fenders, boathook, lifebuoy, anchor on chain and warp, steering compass with crude mount, 5W solar panel (enough for weekend sailing) fire blanket and (out of date) extinguisher etc. The yard trailer is available (free) if wanted but isn't suitable for the road.

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The boat is equipped with 2 cabins and a galley.

The boat equipped with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

The Pandora 22 has been built with different keel alternatives.

One option is a fin keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a full keel.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 0.99 - 1.09 meter (3.25 - 3.55 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Another option is a bilge keel. A bilge keel is a double keel, which allows the boat to be beached. Bilge keels are the most popular keel for tidal waters.

Pandora 22 can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 0.91 - 1.01 meter (2.99 - 3.29 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

CentreBoard

Another option is a centreboard keel. A centreboard keel is a pivoting lifting keel, allowing to sail both coastal and inland waters.

An outboard motor is often used on this boat. In that case Pandora 22 will typically require a power of 2 - 3 hp, alternatively 48 - 58 lbs thrust if you prefer an electrical motor. Electric outboards are becoming popular for sailboat owners who want clean instant power with less noise and no exhaust fumes.

This boat looks to be in fair order and with the lack of wood throughout has a very modern feel and look. The rigging was new in 2014 and she was out of the water and anti fouled in 2016. the modern 4 stroke engine starts easily. She will make an ideal introduction in to the world of sailing.

I'm looking at a Pandora 22 (fin keel) as 1st boat/project, in need of tlc. Can anyone advise on their build quality and seaworthiness for coastal sailing as there seems to be a lack of info on net? Many thanks Nick  

We had a Pandora for about 6 years (bilge keeler) The fin keel ones sail very well for their size. The rig is bullet proof as a masthead with twin lowers. They are not overcanvassed so a little slow in light winds but very well suited for coastal sailing if you don't need standing headroom. One recurring problem is with the mast step. The inner lining is supported on two ply bulkheads which can start to push through the lining. Likewise, the beam underneath the mast can give, leading to problems. This is eminently fixable; I saw another Pandora with a replacement ring bulkhead which did the job very well. The layup is quite heavy for the size of boat so unless there has been damage it is unlikely to give problems. The cockpit is quite large so room for the family.  

The Pandora in its various guises was very successful, probably more in racing than cruising but there's no reason not to travel almost anywhere in one. They can look a bit scruffy with age, a hard life racing won't help appearances so your TLC should reap dividends. The only drawback I can see is the fin keel, have you got a mooring sorted ? On the South Coast, deep water moorings are expensive, the annual cost for a 22' fin keeler would be prohibitive, but at other places around the UK like Wales or Scotland it should be OK.

Had one as my first cruiser ** years ago. It was called PANCHO and had been the National champion Anyway........great boats out in all weathers but with a couple of weaknesses.The mast step and the rigging attachment points. You can put in a hardwood mast support to avoid dishing of the deck and we put in reinforcing brackets to link the hull to the D-ring in the deck. So look out for concavity at the mast and convexity at the rigging attachment. Oh ...and the forehatch tends to leak and you sometimes find they have been replaced with a Lewmar or the like or fiberglassed up solid. Good luck.  

I had a bilge keeled Pandora a few years ago - she was an ideal little boat- sailed well, simple, no real faults she was a bit cramped for 4 of us but we did cruise the French coast and Channel Islands a number of times living aboard for 3-4 weeks at a time. I did remove the ply half bulk heads and made up a metal tube mast support which did seem to work. It certainly made a bit more living space.

very good boats fun to sail. we couldn't afford one so had the Prelude for 3 years. build quality ok & they have stood the test of time, the original Trotter by Van der Stadt must be over 40 yrs old now.

I have a Pandora too, bought it just over a year ago. I agree on all the positives above, and the reservations about the forehatch - it's an odd shape and difficult to keep watertight, and since I've never used it in earnest I'm thinking I will glass it up solid. The problem of the bulkhead-or-pole mast support is still under consideration. Mine has had a pole fitted which makes accessing the forepeak quite a gymnastic exercise. So I shall probably revert to a bulkhead. There is one other issue - the outboard well. Water swilling around inside it when you are sailing is pretty noisy unless you have a plug in it - in which case where is your outboard? Hanging on the transom rail? - and you'll haul it off there and put it in the well everytime you want to use it? so where will you put the plug then? (too big for the cockpit lockers) While i'm at it - the fin keel. I'm lucky to live right on the shore of a sheltered bay where I've laid a mooring just 200 yards from my front door, and I have a friendly relationship with a crane owner who launches and recovers the boat for me. I wouldn't like to pay the going rate either for the mooring or the cranework!

US alleges sanctioned Russian oligarch’s niece made payments for his $300M yacht

The yacht, known as the Amadea, was seized by officials in 2022, with the U.S. alleging billionaire Putin ally Suleiman Kerimov is the ultimate beneficial owner.

U.S. authorities claim to be one step closer to proving a seized $300 million mega yacht is owned by sanctioned Russian Suleiman Kerimov, according to new court filings that detail alleged payments for the boat from the oligarch’s niece.

The yacht, a 348-foot luxury vessel known as Amadea, was seized in Fiji in 2022 by local officials at the request of the United States, as part of the Justice Department’s ongoing efforts to identify and seize assets of sanctioned Russian oligarchs in the wake of Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

Kerimov, known for throwing lavish parties and for his reportedly close relationship with Vladimir Putin, was sanctioned by the U.S. in 2018. Britain and the European Union later followed suit.

However, since the Amadea’s seizure, another Russian oligarch, Eduard Khudainatov, who is not currently under U.S. sanctions, has claimed to be the yacht’s rightful owner — an assertion U.S. authorities deny.

Prosecutors allege that new documents show Kerimov’s niece, Alisa Gadzhieva, entered into a loan agreement with the company that owns the yacht, Errigal Marine Limited, and then made two payments to Khudainatov’s holding company, Invest International Finance Ltd, Intelligence Online reported .

“The United States takes sanction evasion seriously and will use all tools at its disposal to ensure that sanctioned individuals are held accountable for their crimes,” U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Damian Williams said in an earlier statement . 

The ship belongs to an array of high-value luxury items linked to Kerimov, including private jets and sportscars, like a $650,000 Ferrari that Kerimov totaled in a fiery crash on the French Riviera in 2006.

The yacht’s seizure followed ICIJ’s Pandora Papers, which included revelations on the offshore financial empire of Kerimov and his closest associates. The investigation showed billions of dollars flowing through opaque offshore shell companies associated with Kerimov, and covert money flows tied to oligarchs and others close to the Kremlin. It also highlighted offshore professionals who have helped oligarchs secretly buy luxury assets like yachts and jets.

Gadzhieva’s brother, Kerimov’s nephew Nariman Gadzhiev, is also under U.S. sanctions for allegedly serving as an assistant and financial facilitator for Kerimov. ICIJ’s reporting showed that, in 2012, a firm registered in Gadzhiev’s name worked with Credit Suisse to secure a $67 million loan for the acquisition of a custom-built Boeing 737 Business Jet as well as a Bombardier Global Express jet. A few years later, an article in Forbes Russia described Kerimov as owning the same kind of Boeing jet.

The Amadea, which is currently in U.S. custody, has already cost over $7 million in taxpayer funds to maintain while the legal battle plays out, The Guardian reported.
