The new Pogo 36

  • Sailing Yacht

Sailing a Pogo yacht is truly unique. These boats are unlike others: Light. Very light. Wide. Very wide. A tiller, of course slightly over canvassed and brutally agile. Pogo yachts are big jolly boats: Very responsive, very fast. Did I say fast? They are ridiculously fast. I tried it multiple times on the very first Pogo, the Pogo 40S , grand-grandfather of the brand new Pogo 36 that was shown on Boatshow Dusseldorf.

About the Pogo 36 in general

No Frills Sailing.com | Lars Reisberg: “Charly, first of all congratulations to this new boat. The whole industry is somehow talking about her. As this is a 36 footer, can you tell me what´s new about the boat?”

Charly Fernbach: “The new Pogo 36 is above all a logical step of evolution in our yard´s line of yachts. She is not a completely new boat but incorporates a lot of lessons learned from our previous models.”

pogo yacht

As I roam the halls at Dusseldorf Boat Show (read here my general overview ) I was – like almost everybody at the show – keen on seeing the big names, big brands and big boats of course. But next to Hall 16, where the grand names had their huge stands, another hall was filled with the small players and their (mostly) boats. Small players?

pogo yacht

The yard from France called Pogo Structures isn´t that small, especially when it comes to the legacy of their boats. For the knowing people the sound of the name “Pogo” makes heartrates go faster and eyes become wet. In short: Pogo boats are legend. I was lucky to meet Monsieur Charly Fernbach at the stand, the notorious face of the French yard Pogo Structures who gave me a tour of the all-new racing cruiser.

Charly Fernbach´s Top 5 about the Pogo 36

The new Pogo 36 will substitute the Pogo 10.50 cruiser. But it is far more than just a replacement or refurbished model. With a LoA of 10.85 metres, a width of 4.00 metres and a draft of 2.95 metres the measurements of the new boat are slightly bigger than of its predecessor. Completely new lines and a distinctive superstructure make it easily recognizable.

pogo yacht

NFS.com: “Tell me about, let´s say, your personal Top 5 features of the new Pogo 36 in terms of those new things.”

Charly Fernbach: “First of all there are the rudder blades and tiller touch. A lot of effort went into the improvement of their efficiency when sailing: good feeling & control from 0.5 knots speed to over 20 knots and from upwind to downwind.”

NFS.com: “You mentioned upwind performance. That´s what I would say is the achille´s heel of wide-stern planing yachts like the Pogo …”

Charly Fernbach: “Comparing the Pogo 10.50 from the year 2007, we made a lot of smaller and some bigger changes to the hull to furthermore improve upwind and light wind performance. When we did the sea trials during the European Yacht Of The Year against the J-112 our Pogo had a little superior performance in terms of pointing and speed in 10 knots of wind. Compared to the Pogo 40, a boat from the year 2005 – this new Pogo 36 is a better yacht. She is much more versatile. The Pogo 36 will plane early and overall we managed to fix some other difficulties that aroused in older boats.”

pogo yacht

More volume in the bow

NFS.com: “In what respects?”

Charly Fernbach: “Take a look at the bow. It´s far less sharply formed. We added volume here. If you´ve got a sharp thin bow it will cut into the waves. Especially when heeling and sailing upwind older boats had the tendency to dive their nose into the water which gave the crew the hell of a ride but overall was a loss of speed and comfort.”

pogo yacht

Indeed, when I rounded the hull from the outside I was amazed by the unfamiliar new shape of the bow. Not exactly what you´ve seen in other – mostly production and big volume boats – where the bow has a hard flat leading edge. A measure to increase the inside volume. With Pogo 36 the leading edge is no edge at all – it´s a full, round and nicely shaped curve that will increase diameter ever so slightly when you reach up the hull to the tip. Not as radical as the proposed scow bow as seen in some Classe Mini Prototypes but visibly broader.

pogo yacht

NFS.com: “What does more volume do then?”

Charly Fernbach: “It will add buoyancy if you want. It will add a tendency of the bow to stay above the water. It is increasing the power of the hull and so its resistance to the wind. This will induce more speed. But it is also giving a better hydrodynamic flow of water to the keel reducing drag and increasing efficiency. Also, if the helmsman has more control over the boat it will surely add confidence.”

About interior design and fittings of the Pogo 36

When I was sailing the grand-grand-father of this new Pogo 36 around the Islands of Helgoland and the Danish Fyn (read it here and here ) our Skipper told some stories of guests who, upon seeing the Pogo´s interior, straight forward left the boat and never came back again. Speaking flat: Pogo´s approach to interior design is not of the one of timber, veneers, teak and classic design. But of weight saving. Means: Bare GRP and topcoat. I was keen upon seeing what the new Pogo 36 would be offering in these terms.

pogo yacht

NFS.com: “Charly, sailing with a Pogo is also special in terms of “comfort” as Pogo Structures has a very own definition of the word “interior design”, as to put it this way …”

Charly Fernbach: (is laughing) “To achieve a lightweight boat the treatment of the inside is sober and elegant. But not “bling-bling”. More than filling the yacht with luxurious elements of the fittings, two major aspects are most important for us here: Lightness of course and ergonomics. Besides: Comparing the Pogo 10.50 you will find a proper bathroom on the Pogo 36.”

pogo yacht

NFS.com: “… with a door?”

Charly Fernbach: “… yes, with a proper door. Seriously, a boat needs to be lightweight and powerful in order to be able to plane. That´s a very easy equation, at least on paper. But we tried to make the yacht a bit more appealing at least. An important topic for a real sailing yacht from our point of view is a tryptic of ergonomics, functionality and easy maintenance.”

And here I am, standing inside this huge proper saloon. Yes, there is a lot less wooden fittings to be found in here, but the quality of the ones I saw was convincing. The boat is extremely light-suffused which comes from the clever allocation of the windows in the superstructure of the boat. A huge dining table in the middle of the settees remind me of the cosy evenings in harbours aboard the Pogo 40.

pogo yacht

I love the modern navigation station which will be adored by sailors for sure, the proper galley is big enough to prepare meals for the crew. The mentioned head in the fore cabin with a proper door is a definitive step forward for Pogo. In the end, I was puzzled – as always when entering a Pogo – by the amount of room inside this 36 foot long boat. Which is easily comparable to the space of a 40 to 42 foot yacht.

On Pogo 36 sailing abilities

NFS.com: “The name Pogo is above all a harbinger of speed. I can remember being aboard one of your boats under sails and the crew was staring at the speedometer: Everything below 10 knots was a kind of disappointment it seemed. So speed is the main attribute – tell me more about the sailing performance of the new Pogo 36.”

Charly Fernbach: “At first: The Pogo 36 as a breed of Structures is a fast sailing yacht for sure. She is fast, responsive and very agile. She is above all easy to sail fast. She loves light wind conditions as well as strong winds. As one of the latest generation offshore boats her mast is stepped more on the rear to offer a relatively narrow main sail – which is more efficient – and bigger angle of stay to generate nose lifting at reaching angles of sailing.”

pogo yacht

NFS.com: “No backstays here?”

Charly Fernbach: “No, completely different from the Class 40 racer you know. Pogo 36 is a real cruising boat. She has to be accessible and safe. So with the carbon mast the boat simply doesn´t need a backstay.”

On Class 40 racing yachts

NFS.com: “You mentioned Class 40. Pogo Structures offers the S3 in their range of very successful pure racers. What´s about the Class itself?”

Charly Fernbach: “With just 10 years the Class 40 is still young.”

NFS.com: “Can you explain that?”

pogo yacht

Charly Fernbach: “Well, like basically everything, a class has life cycle too. When it is introduced, boats are affordable and people come to the class to have fun there. Back then, some 10 years or so ago, a Class 40 sailing yacht would cost some 140.000 Euros. Now the class gets more and more competitive and the last details to increase the performance are often really expensive. Now some teams will spend more than 500.000 Euros for Class 40 racing yachts itself. I think that it is important to keep nonprofessional sailors on the fleet of Class 40 by keeping the cost for boats reasonable. This is important for the future.

NFS.com: “So Structures will abandon the Class 40 concept?”

Charly Fernbach: “No, not at all. With our Classe Mini and Class 40 we have a line of pure offshore racers. For us as a company this is a platform for development to make fast cruisers, such like the Pogo 12.50 and this new Pogo 36.

NFS.com: “That means?”

Charly Fernbach: “Take the Route du Rhum. After such a very hard race the boats will have undergone the harshest testing conditions you can imagine. You cannot reproduce those conditions in test scenarios in your home bay. So after such a race we see where the weak points are and what we can improve both for the racing yachts and our fast cruisers. Just like Formula One for a carmaker, regatta racing is our testbed.”

pogo yacht

NFS.com: “Charly, thanks so much for answering my questions and giving an exclusive insight in the latest developments of Pogo Structures.”

So I leave the small stand of Pogo Structures. Take a last look at the small Pogo 36. And I know, that this might be one of the biggest boats whatsoever of the whole show, a real star of the fleet and probably one of the most exciting boats of the fair. I´d love to see her sailing – and when imagining the boat running two digit speeds downwind I can clearly see myself at the helm. Smiling bright and happy.

Pogo 44 on test : Sporty fast cruiser speaks a radical design language

Michael Good

 ·  20.02.2024

Uncompromising. The concept of the Pogo is radically focussed on performance. The look matches it

Light and strong: vacuum infusion process

The competition: fast ships for long strokes, the measured values for testing the pogo 44, the pogo 44 in detail, price and shipyard, yacht review of the pogo 44, only power helps in the long run.

Some brands stand for a specific niche like few others; they are representative of an entire type of ship. For example: Hallberg-Rassy is indisputably the benchmark for upmarket blue water sailing. In the same way, X-Yachts is exemplary for performance cruising, and Brenta has almost become a symbolic trademark for modern day sailing. And the themes of offshore racing and fast cruising have a very popular figurehead in the form of the Pogo brand.

The Pogo Structures shipyard from Brittany has been in existence since 1987 under the management of founder and owner Christian Bouroullec. The company in Combrit on the French west coast has become well-known and important in particular for its boats for the Mini 6.50 class, which have been setting the standards for fast offshore dwarfs for years under the name Pogo 1, 2 and 3, and are now in their third model generation. The small offshore racers, which are still produced in considerable numbers, essentially cover the French company's bread and butter business.

Over the years, Pogo has also built up a notable programme of fast cruisers, also known as crossover boats, which are also suitable for the high seas. The line starts with the nine-metre-long Pogo 30 (test in YACHT 14/ 2013) and extends to the large 50 with a hull length of over 15 metres. In between, the Bretons have continued to fill out the range. The Pogo 36 was introduced in 2016 (test in YACHT 1/2017) and the Pogo 44, which is conceptually very similar to its little sister, but two metres longer and 50 centimetres wider. In the medium term, it will probably replace the Pogo 12.50, which has been on the market for over ten years.

Revised and tightened design features

The current pogos from the "Croisière" range, i.e. the cruising types, all come from the Finot/Conq design office with a largely standardised signature. In other words: hulls with a pronounced uphaul and extremely wide sterns, double rudder system with two tiller posts in the cockpit as well as a powerful rig positioned far aft with an enormous sail area. In addition, all pogos are equipped with a swivelling keel.

For the 44, designer Pascal Conq has once again significantly tightened up the features. This means that the pronounced chines are angled even more strongly aft, resulting in a widely drawn-in waterline and laterally long hull overhangs - but only in a neutral swimming position. Even with little heel, the underwater hull dips downwind across the beam to the chine, which provides a lot of lift and extremely high dimensional stability; this means that more sail area can remain set for longer. Added to this is the strong righting force generated by the swing keel with its immense draught of 3.10 metres and a very low centre of gravity.

The leading edges extend far forward, where they ultimately end in a very full front section, a kind of semi-scow bow. With the distinctly wide but flat nose and the high forefoot, the Pogo is designed to glide over the waves instead of breaking through them. The additional volume in the foredeck also helps the boat to dip less over the bow when there is a lot of pressure and heeling, making it more balanced, stiffer and ultimately faster to sail, especially in swell.

IMOCA as a model for the Pogo 44

The rather radical design language of the Pogo 44 may be polarising, but it more or less corresponds to the latest findings in the design of modern ocean racers. The latest designs of the excitingly innovative Imoca 60 class, for example, with their hull shapes optimised for long strokes on the beam, were clearly the inspiration for the development of the Pogo 44.

In the small harbour of the picturesque town of Sainte-Marine in Brittany, not far from the shipyard, the Pogo 44 stands out from the large mass of small and rather inconspicuous boats. With its impressive dimensions, especially at the stern, the imposing sailing machine appears larger than it actually is. After all, the stern is 4.50 metres wide, which is the largest projection ever. This is not necessarily an advantage when manoeuvring in the harbour and when parking in the box.

In the vacuum infusion process, dry glass fibres and foam sheets are placed in the mould as the core material and sealed with a film. The resin is then sucked into the laminate structure under vacuum and the structures are cured

The maxim at Pogo is: consistent weight reduction. All parts are built using the vacuum infusion process

When you enter the Pogo Structures shipyard, one thing is immediately noticeable: It doesn't smell as strongly of polyester and styrene as is often the case in such companies. This is because Pogo consistently manufactures all GRP parts using the vacuum infusion process, including the canting keel, but not as a sandwich but as a thick solid laminate. How exactly this is done in detail remains a well-kept secret at Pogo. The lowest part of the comparatively light GRP keel shaft is inserted into a lead body, the actual ballast section, and is bolted to it. This means that around 1.95 tonnes of the 2.1 tonne keel (approx. 92 percent) is installed at the maximum draught, i.e. between 2.00 and 3.10 metres.

Really let it rip

As ordered in advance, the Atlantic offers perfect conditions for the YACHT test. The south-westerly wind blows at between 15 and 20 knots and pushes a nice, long swell in front of it. On a boat like the Pogo 44, you can look forward to fast courses under gennaker in these conditions. But before we get that far, we first have to head far in the opposite direction. The log shows an average of 7.2 knots on the long cross. The boat tacked over 90 degrees, which is quite a lot for a performance-orientated racer. On top of that, the flat hull with the full front sometimes hammers quite hard into the approaching waves. Cruising is not necessarily the Pogo 44's favourite discipline in wind and waves.

On the other hand, the boat benefits from its enormous dimensional stability and a lot of righting moment when sailing upwind. The Pogo sails remarkably stiff and upright and can easily cope with gusts without having to constantly trim the sails. On long sea voyages, the high stability under sail is generally a great advantage, especially for more comfort on board.

For the way back, a gennaker with 165 square metres in the stocking is pulled right up to the masthead. Then it's time: Hold on tight! The Pogo 44 accelerates like a small planing dinghy, firing away as if she had a harbour urge. The log quickly shows double-digit values and the plump bow comes up. The ship, which is just under 13 metres long, is easy and relaxed to steer through and over the waves, responding immediately to the steering impulses on the tiller steering. The log registers 14.3 knots at full planing speed as the daily record during the YACHT test, and the people at Pogo report speeds of up to 18 knots as the best performance in even more wind. These are impressive figures!

The autopilot is part of the Pogo 44

The layout in the cockpit is characterised by a clear division into two sections. All halyards, sheets and trim lines are operated at the front, directly at the companionway. And there are quite a few of them. For a total of 18 functions (including mainsail and headsail sheets), there are four large winches to the left and right of the companionway, which the crew can operate very efficiently while standing at a good height. Two of these are also available with electric drives on request. The distance between the drums and the stoppers is also large enough so that all lines can be run over one winch or the other as required. In this way, the functions do not jam during manoeuvres. Overall, the layout in the front cockpit is rather unusual, but proves to be very functional and practical - a good solution.

The helmsman sits at the very back on the side of the running deck or further forward, more comfortably and protected on the cockpit bulwark. From both positions, he has a good grip on the nearby tiller, with or without the outrigger. Apart from steering, however, he doesn't have much to do there. Only the trim line for the traveller - particularly important in this rig concept - is within his direct reach. The helmsman has no access to any other functions on the companionway from his position.

  • JPK 45 FC: Deep-sea express blue-water yacht from France
  • Neo 430 Roma: Exclusive powerhouse from Italy

If you want to sail the Pogo 44 with a small crew, double-handed or single-handed, you will inevitably have to have a good and reliable autopilot installed. This is undoubtedly part of the concept and should actually be part of the standard scope of delivery. Pogo Structures would also be able to build the new 44 with two steering wheels instead of two tiller wheels.

The rig is positioned unusually far aft, almost exactly in the centre of the hull length. This means that the genoa (called a solent by the French), which overlaps only briefly, is proportionally larger than with conventional rig concepts. In addition, there is a fully battened mainsail with a widely flared head section (square or fathead). Because the mast, with its very long and strongly angled spreaders, does not need back and leech stays, the sailmaker has more freedom for the mainsail in terms of luffing and leech delivery.

Worthwhile surcharges

The Pogo 44 comes with an aluminium mast and boom as standard from the shipyard. A carbon fibre rig is available for an additional charge. For a ship as powerful as the Pogo 44, this additional investment is definitely worth it - not only because the carbon mast with rod shrouds is lighter, but also because it is significantly stiffer than the aluminium profile. This is essential for this particular rigging plan without a backstay, because the tension on the shrouds has to be extremely high and the loads are therefore considerable.

Even for the simple sail set with main and solent, the buyer has to factor in considerable additional costs on top of the basic price, depending on the quality and design. In any case, the Pogo concept makes little sense without a gennaker and (or) Code Zero. Unfortunately, these sails are not available for free either. In addition, a smaller staysail as a jib, a so-called trinquette, is essential for long strokes.

Storage space for sails is limited

At least one additional sail, for example the gennaker in the recovery tube, can be stored in the forepeak, where the anchor chain is also stored in a separate area. However, the storage space here is quickly exhausted and the hatch is too small for larger sail bags anyway. A little more space is available in the aft peak, although care must be taken to ensure that stowage items such as sails, fenders or mooring lines do not become entangled with the steering mechanism, which runs completely unprotected below deck with push rods. Unfortunately, there are no additional stowage spaces such as forecastle boxes below the cockpit thwarts.

A separate storage compartment for the life raft is integrated in the rear. However, the rescue box would be difficult to reach if required because the flap opens upwards and blocks access. It would be better to have an attached flap without hinges, which could be removed quickly and completely in an emergency.

Plenty of space in the cabins of the Pogo 44

The Pogo 44 also benefits from its extraordinarily voluminous hull for the interior below deck. Due to the large width aft, the berths there can be rectangular, which is comfortable for two people to sleep in. The space available in the foredeck is also above average, and the dimensions for the owner's double bed are well above the standard dimensions for this size of boat. In addition, the sofa berth in the saloon can be converted into an additional double bed thanks to the lowerable table. Eight people can therefore easily spend the night on the Pogo 44. Two bathrooms are provided for this purpose.

Pogo offers alternatives for the foredeck, where two cabins can also be installed. However, judging by the plans, the berths are then quite narrow and only suitable for single occupancy. There is also some variation for the forward toilet room. Instead of the separate shower compartment, a locker for wet oilskins could be installed there.

Interior design is simple, but not uncomfortable

The interior is kept simple and very straightforward throughout, but impresses with a high level of functionality and yet a surprising amount of comfort. The galley, which is integrated into the saloon as a long row on the starboard side, has large work surfaces and plenty of usable storage space. The large windows in the superstructure and hull create a feeling of an open and bright living environment, allowing views both standing and sitting. Currently very much in vogue on French boats: the windows in the forward tapered cabin superstructure also allow you to see in the direction of travel and even into the sails to some extent.

In line with Pogo's concept philosophy, the shipyard has also placed great emphasis on maximising weight savings for the interior fittings. Wherever possible, the French have used featherweight yet robust composite parts instead of heavier plywood components. The cabins are only separated by curtains instead of doors, although these are available as an option. And the shipyard does not use heavy inner shells, neither in the saloon nor in the cabins. Instead, the underside of the originally quite rough infusion deck is sanded and levelled until the surfaces are absolutely perfect.

Not for beginners

The concept of the Pogo 44 is able to deliver good compromises and builds bridges between many different requirements. Fast and successful regatta sailing or sporty sailing with the family - both are possible. At the same time, it is a demanding and rather complicated boat to sail. A certain level of basic sailing ability is an absolute prerequisite. Not for beginners, therefore, but rather something for active and ambitious people. Boredom on long trips? Definitely not with this boat!

Clarence Thomas Took Free Yacht Trip to Russia, Chopper Flight to Putin’s Hometown: Dems

The allegedly secret gifts were disclosed in a letter from two Democratic senators that accused Thomas of potentially committing tax fraud.

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has been accused of not disclosing a yacht trip to Russia and a private helicopter flight to a palace in President Vladimir Putin’s hometown, among a slew of other gifts and loans from businessman Harlan Crow .

Buried on page 14 of a letter that two Democratic senators sent to Attorney General Merrick Garland on Tuesday, in which they urged Garland to appoint a special counsel to probe Thomas, was an astonishing list of dozens of “likely undisclosed gifts and income” from Crow, Crow’s affiliated companies, and “other donors.”

In the letter, Sens. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) and Ron Wyden (D-OR) said Thomas, one of the court’s staunchly conservative justices , even may have committed tax fraud and violated other federal laws by “secretly” accepting the gifts and income potentially worth millions.

“The Senate is not a prosecutorial body, and the Supreme Court has no fact-finding function of its own, making the executive role all the more important if there is ever to be any complete determination of the facts,” reads the letter requesting the appointment of a special prosecutor.

“We do not make this request lightly,” said the letter.

The list of potentially secret gifts also includes a loan of more than $267,000 provided by Thomas’ close friend Anthony Welters, the yacht trip to Russia from the Baltics, and the helicopter ride to Yusupov Palace in St. Petersburg. ProPublica first reported last year on the existence of extensive undisclosed gifts and lavish trips from Crow.

A list of alleged secret gifts and payment to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.

Additionally, Justice Thomas is accused of not disclosing tuitions for his grandnephew, free lodging, real estate transactions, and home renovations. The action escalates Democratic senators’ efforts to hold Thomas accountable for perceived ethics controversies.

According to the senators, Thomas’ conduct could violate the Ethics in Government Act, which requires officials like Supreme Court justices to file annual reports disclosing gifts and income accepted from outside sources.

“It is a crime,” reads the report, “To knowingly and willfully fail to file or report such information.”

Since 2023, two Senate committees have been looking into the 1991 loan from Welters that was connected to Thomas’ purchase of a luxury motor home. Welters previously responded to a New York Times request for comment on the loan only to say that it was “satisfied.”

Thomas, for his part, belatedly disclosed some—but not all—gifts from Crow this year and has defended the gifts as “personal hospitality” from some of his and his wife’s “dearest friends.”

“The evidence assembled thus far plainly suggests that Justice Thomas has committed numerous willful violations of federal ethics and false-statement laws and raises significant questions about whether he and his wealthy benefactors have,” Whitehouse and Wyden wrote.

Pogo 44 first look: This Finot-Conq designed cruiser should punch above its weight

Yachting World

  • October 7, 2020

The new Pogo 44 aims to deliver more speed, space and comfort without compromising on the qualities that have set its previous cruising models apart from the pack

This Breton yard has long punched well above its weight with both its raceboats, including a foiling Mini 650 , and cruising models.

Over time, the company has increased its focus on the latter, producing well-engineered designs that embody attributes developed for long-distance short-handed raceboats and coupling these with cruising comforts.

Pogo’s latest model is aimed at providing proportionately more speed, space and comfort, while retaining the existing ethos that has proved very popular with tech savvy cruisers who like to sail fast.

This Finot-Conq design closes the gap in the range between the long-running 40ft Pogo 12.50 and the Pogo 50 that was launched eight years ago, and builds on the heritage of the more recent Pogo 36 .

The Pogo 44’s rig is mounted well aft, giving flexibility to set a wide range of headsails and furling asymmetric spinnakers, including staysails and heavy weather jibs.

The square-top mainsail, which has a long chord length at the head, helps to boost sail area, although a more conventional mainsail shape is also offered.

The Pogo 44 has the same beam as the Pogo 12.50, so appears proportionately more slender on paper.

However, the chine extends right forward to the bow and the forward sections are broader and more powerful.

Nevertheless, designer Pascal Conq says the shape is moderate compared to the latest generation of Class 40s .

With the new larger boat weighing only 400kg more than the 12.50, it can be expected to lift onto the plane more easily, giving phenomenal performance off the wind.

Top of the range deck hardware is configured to allow any operation to be carried out efficiently by only one person. Owners can choose twin tillers or wheels.

Pogo 44 is a fast lift keel cruising yacht from a yard with a proven record of building race boats

Much of the extra hull length is forward of the main bulkhead, where there’s an impressively large and well-appointed owner’s cabin.

Even when fitted with the optional en-suite, which includes a separate shower stall, this cabin has plenty of space and good stowage, plus additional seating aft of the berth.

The rest of the accommodation includes a linear galley opposite a large saloon, one or two double aft cabins, an aft-facing navigation station and a heads compartment aside the companionway.

Despite the contemporary styling, broad transom and twin rudders, this boat is every bit a cruiser – no attempt has been made to modify the shape or sail plan to optimise IRC ratings. On-deck stowage is plentiful and easily accessed.

The first Pogo 44 was launched in July this year.

The POGO 40 S4

The S4 is the fourth generation of Class40 from Pogo Structures.

This new design, produced by the architect Guillaume Verdier , could be the result of an infernal equation combining the following constraints:

  • Minimum boat weight
  • Reduced wetted surface
  • + Hull power
  • + Rig power
  • + Versatility in navigation
  • Gauge Class40

A very AGGRESSIVE HULL DESIGN :

Tested with multiple numerical simulations (CFD) by Guillaume Verdier , the hull of the S4 was selected with the best result of the various studies.

Its massive SCOW-style bow and its detached brion simultaneously provide power and a low drag surface.

The chines extend from the bow to the transom and provide the boat with fabulous stiffness.

The very tight hull on the rear part instantly benefits gliding and planing starts.

The boat is laminated using vacuum infusion technology. A know-how that POGO STRUCTURES has mastered for many years on its entire range.

The RIGGING :

The Carbon rig has the choice of the racer : one or two levels of spreaders and it is very far back on the deck to maintain the centering of the weights and further increase the surfaces of the headsails.

The rudders :

S4 rudders have long, saber-sharp profiles.

Mounted on the transom and can be lifted upwind when sailing.

A system of connecting bars between the rudders joins a central bar: saving weight and effort on the rudder heads.

For the design of the keel, Guillaume Verdier created an incredible keel sail profile incorporating a huge "torpedo" lead bulb.

The experience of the other Class40s manufactured at POGO STRUCTURES has made it possible to design a very optimized deck plan with the latest models of fittings.

For more comfort and safety, most of the maneuvers are done from the coachroof, sheltered by the coachroof which becomes the main control post of the boat.
