“I really like my 34’ Munson. There’s been high demand in my area for a dive boat and the Munson makes a really good dive platform. I’ve carried a lot of weight on this boat, (exceeding 5,000 lbs on many occasions,) and have never seen the load have any impact on the boat’s ride or handling. This boat handles really well. I go out all the time when there are small craft warnings without any difficulty. The ride can get a bit uncomfortable in gale force winds, (as you would expect) but I’ve never felt unsafe in this boat. I’ve run in seas that are considerably taller than the boat without difficulty.

I’m not an expert regarding metal fabrication, but everyone who has seen my boat and who is knowledgeable about metal work has gone out of their way to tell me that it’s got the best welding of any metal fabrication that they’ve ever seen. One guy who does welding for a living told me that the welds on my boat could be considered the “Olympic gold medal” standard for welding. This boat is really well put together.

I’m completely happy with this boat and don’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone. If and when I buy another boat, (when my wife let’s me) it’s going to be another Munson.”

Catch a sea breeze on Long Beach’s water taxi

The ferry is one of LA’s hidden gems. Can it be more than a tourist attraction?

Standing on the deck of Long Beach's AquaLink water taxi , I was reminded of a story my grandmother once told me about riding the Staten Island Ferry back and forth to stay cool during the muggy New York summers of her childhood.

Minutes earlier I had been sweating at the city’s downtown marina, wondering why I hadn't worn shorts. But once the boat got moving, the cool sea breeze became a natural air conditioner—more refreshing even than the climate-controlled confines of the cabin (where riders can purchase cocktails).

I looked around at the crisp blue water and watched clusters of office buildings and beachfront high-rises fade into the distance.

“Not a bad way to travel,” I thought, as a pair of dolphins emerged from the surf.

Bright orange catamarans and cabin cruisers have ferried riders around the Long Beach’s waterfront since 2001, and hopping aboard the vessels is one of the most accessible seafaring experiences available in Los Angeles County.

But I wanted to find out if the water taxi system could be a true form of public transportation. As Los Angeles County grows its transit network —and deals with the effects of crippling traffic congestion —should local leaders consider how sea routes might be used to move people throughout the region?

A woman sits on a boat with her back to the camera; a guard rail, an orange life preserver, and a red, white, and blue flag can be seen on the boat deck.

In the last decade, several coastal U.S. cities, including New York and San Francisco , have adopted ferry systems or expanded existing ones in an effort to bypass gridlocked streets and provide commuters with new ways to get around.

In the Los Angeles area, proposals for ferry systems connecting the region’s beach cities have been explored by local officials for at least a century. In 1991, Santa Monica planners explicitly pitched ferry service as an alternative for drivers afflicted by traffic on the 405 freeway.

Former USC student David Bailey mapped out a similar concept in 2017 that would provide an aquatic link between Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, Santa Monica, and Malibu .

“LA has the car alternative figured out, we’re working on rail, but the ocean is a huge opportunity, and we’re not using it,” Bailey told Curbed last year.

A sailboat on the water, with an island faintly visible in the distance through haze

Long Beach is the only Los Angeles County city that’s incorporated ferry service into its transportation system. Though technically operated by ferry company Catalina Express , the water taxi is funded by the city’s public transit agency and operates in the same network as its buses (fares can be paid through the same mobile app used to purchase bus trips).

Up until now, the ferries have only been brought out during summer months and for special events. But Long Beach Transit announced earlier this year that it would begin offering year-round weekend service on the boats.

The city operates two lines: the longer-distance AquaLink ferry and the AquaBus, which serves mainly as a link between the Queen Mary ocean liner (permanently moored at the mouth of the Los Angeles River) and the other tourist attractions positioned around the city’s downtown marina.

A large metal sign that reads: “Pine Avenue Pier.” In the background is a mock-Japanese-style building, a red-colored restaurant, and a waterfront area

A ride on the AquaBus costs just $1 and lines for the boat wind around the dock during special events and seasonal attractions onboard the Queen Mary. But its limited route clearly has more appeal for tourists than residents trying to get around the city.

The $5 AquaLink travels between the downtown harbor and Alamitos Bay, close to the Orange County border. Complete with a small park-and-ride lot near the Alamitos marina, the ferry is a more viable option for commuters—or, it would be if it offered rides during the morning rush hour.

Even during the summer, when the AquaLink runs on weekdays, the first boats don’t launch until 11 a.m. (final departures are between 9:45 and 10:30, depending on the day of the week). Long Beach Transit also has just two AquaLink vessels, meaning that boats can only depart every 45 minutes

Long Beach Transit spokesperson Michael Gold says the agency has mulled the possibility of expanding service hours attract riders who work in downtown Long Beach, but right now there’s no budget for those additional trips.

The ferry probably also wouldn’t save any time for passengers who could otherwise drive. On my recent trip, the journey to Alamitos Bay took about 35 minutes. A car ride back to downtown lasted 19 minutes, complete with a missed turn.

A windshield of a boat, behind which a captain stands alongside navigational equipment

Time savings by boat would probably only be realized over longer distances and in places where the region’s geography makes a trip by sea more direct—like the journey from Santa Monica to Malibu.

A 1979 landslide that buried part of Pacific Coast Highway offered residents a brief preview of what that service might look like. During a weeks-long road closure, Caltrans ran a ferry between Malibu and Santa Monica, at a cost of $2 for a one-way trip.

As the Los Angeles Times reported at the time, the service was far from seamless. On the first day, boats departed behind schedule and encountered rocky surf, leaving at least one rider seasick. The ride from Malibu Pier also took 50 minutes—longer than a bus trip today.

In his proposal, Bailey points out that, at a speed of 27 knots (31 miles per hour), a ferry trip from Santa Monica to Malibu could be made in just 23 minutes—including two minutes docking time. At that speed, a boat ride might be more appealing to travelers seeking to avoid rush hour traffic.

A large expanse of water, with clusters of tall buildings in the distance

But Move LA director Denny Zane, who sat on the Santa Monica City Council when the city considered reviving the ferry idea in the 1990s, says he’s skeptical that a ferry service would ever draw in a high number of commuters.

“As difficult as our traffic is, I seriously doubt a ferry service would be a competitive alternative [to driving]—except as a see-the-sea recreational option,” he writes in an email.

One major reason why ferries might not be well-suited as public transit workhorses relied upon by daily commuters is that they are relatively inefficient as a form of transportation. A single AquaLink vessel in Long Beach’s fleet can carry 75 passengers; Metro’s Blue Line train, which departs from downtown Long Beach every 12 minutes, can hold almost 400 riders at maximum capacity.

Of course, Long Beach could buy bigger boats—or run mid-size vessels more frequently—but these options come with new costs and challenges. Gold says that the city’s transit agency has considered adding new ferries to its fleet, but that the service “hasn’t grown yet to that point.”

Right now, Gold says that the water taxi service has a farebox recovery rate of 34 percent, meaning that passenger payment covers only about one-third of the cost of operating the ferries. That’s actually far better than the farebox recovery rate for the city’s bus network ( 17.1 percent in 2018 ), but it does suggest that the purchase of new boats would be unlikely to pay for itself.

As it is, Long Beach already spends almost three times as much per rider subsidizing the ferry service as it does the local bus system.

For now, then, the water taxi system is likely to mainly draw in out-of-towners and locals looking to beat the summer heat.

“We get people coming from all over LA—even the Valley,” AquaLink deckhand Steve Bebich told me as he tended the ferry’s onboard bar. “I think a lot of people see it as a little vacation, and I guess it kind of is.”

How to ride

The AquaLink ferry can be boarded at Alamitos Bay, at the Rainbow Harbor in downtown Long Beach (the dock is close to the Aquarium of the Pacific), or at the dock alongside the Queen Mary. A fourth stop at Belmont Pier is closed indefinitely pending repairs to the pier.

Fares are $5 and can be paid in cash or with the Long Beach Transit mobile app . Boats depart roughly every 45 minutes between 11 a.m. and 9:45 p.m.—daily during summer months and on weekends in the off-season. Check the schedule for more information.

The AquaBus travels between the Aquarium dock, the Pine Avenue Circle dock (near the Q Smokehouse), Shoreline Village (near Parkers’ Lighthouse), the Queen Mary, and the Hotel Maya.

Fares are $1; as with the AquaLink, they can be paid with cash or by mobile app . Boats depart between 11 a.m. and 7:30 p.m.—daily during summer months and on weekends in the off-season. Check the schedule for more information.

New Water Taxi Service Connects Downtown Bradenton to Anna Maria Island

catamaran water taxi

Manatee County announces the launch of a water taxi service, linking downtown Bradenton with Anna Maria Island, starting December 8, 2023. This new mode of transportation offers a direct, traffic-free travel option for residents and visitors. With the goal to ease the often congested roads, especially during the busy tourist season, this service marks a significant shift in the area’s approach to transportation challenges.

catamaran water taxi

The Gulf Islands Ferry, operated by Gulf Coast Water Taxi, will utilize two 50-foot open-air catamarans, the Miss Anna Maria and Downtown Duchess, to ferry passengers. These boats will operate from Friday through Sunday, between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m., offering hourly rides. The service will initially include stops at the Anna Maria City Pier and Bridge Street Pier, with plans to expand to Coquina Beach in early 2024 and potentially to Longboat Key and downtown Sarasota.

The ferry aims to alleviate the area’s notorious traffic and parking issues, particularly for beach-goers. The service, aside from its convenience, is also an eco-friendly initiative. Powered by renewable energy sources, the catamarans are part of the Bureau’s commitment to preserve the local environment. This aligns with the “Love It Like a Local” initiative, which promotes sustainable tourism practices.

catamaran water taxi

The ferries can carry up to 49 passengers, and the journey takes approximately 35 minutes. Ticket prices are set at $8 for adults, with discounts available for seniors and children. The project, funded by tourist bed taxes, represents a significant investment in the region’s infrastructure.

Bradenton Mayor Gene Brown expressed enthusiasm about the project’s potential impact: “What is really worth tourist dollars something like this not only to help the multimodal transportation to get off the roads and show where it’s sustainable, so this is a 7-week process.”

catamaran water taxi

Local businesses anticipate a boost in foot traffic and customer visits, thanks to the new service. This sentiment is shared by many in the community, who see the water taxi as a catalyst for economic growth and enhanced connectivity between the mainland and the island.

on-demand water taxis without captains can soon become new regular transport in helsinki

On-demand water taxis as regular mode of transport in helsinki.

Autonomous water taxis could soon become a regular mode of transport without a captain on board in Helsinki following boat company Callboats’ summer water vehicle service between islands. When regulations and concerns are ironed out, passengers in Helsinki can regularly board water taxis without an authority’s supervision and book transport to and from remote islands in the city.

The dubbed world’s first autonomous on-demand water taxis have been put forward and endorsed by Forum Virium Helsinki, the City of Helsinki’s innovation company. While the presence of autonomous water taxis in the country has been consistent, current legislation in Finland does not yet allow these water taxis to operate autonomously. It was in 2018 when government-owned Finferries successfully took an autonomous ferry trip from Parainen to Nauvo in Finland’s southwestern archipelago for the first time.

According to Forum Virium Helsinki , there needs to be at least one crew member on board the autonomous water taxis. On top of this, the price per trip may still not be affordable. In the summer of 2023, the City of Helsinki selected Callboats to operate the first regular route to the islands of Kotiluoto, North Villaluoto, and Malkasaari in East Helsinki, and the cost of a captain-manned boat trip may vary.

Another issue that may be looked into is a dire shortage of captains, but Managing Director Peter Ostberg from Mente Marine Callboats sees it as an opportunity. In a Helsinki Times report , he says that as much as 60–70% of the costs of archipelago transport come from the captains’ wages and that thanks to the autonomous operation, one captain could operate five Callboats, which would offer lower prices and more profit within the short season.

As soon as legislation allows remotely operated on-demand water taxis, Callboats and other boat companies may be able to freely supply a new means of public transport around Helsinki. As Senior Specialist Pekka Koponen of Forum Virium says, a system of autonomous on-demand boats is an important innovation that can significantly improve the accessibility of the archipelago. ‘Autonomous on-demand boats would be a more agile, eco-friendly, and cost-efficient way of transporting passengers to small islands, compared to ferry transport,’ he says in a report .

Autonomous water taxi models of callboats

Callboats Managing Director Peter Ostberg tells designboom that ‘the reason why we started Callboats was to reduce emissions. A passenger boat often operates 1000 hours a year compared to 50 hours for a leisure boat, so the effect of electrification is 20-fold.’

The company has operated two models so far with another one on its way. CAT 6 was the very first one they built, which is an autonomous water taxi that could accommodate up to six people. Its entire roof is covered with solar panels which power up the water vehicle, and the specific model went on a commercial operation in Helsinki in 2020. Callboats says that it transported 7,000 people for two summer months with a supervising captain on board.

Alongside CAT 6, its sibling CAT 10 followed suit some time later. The bigger version of the catamaran can accommodate between 12 and 20 passengers at once with its ferry-like style, and its electric propulsion enables the autonomous water taxi to cruise at up to 6 knots. Its solar paneled roof is enough to electrify the water vehicle for up to nine hours. The other one on its way is a remodeled version of CAT 10. Named CAT 10 L, which can host up to 30 passengers and operate for longer periods between charging.

The vessels, MV Sally Fox and MV Doc Maynard, are two ferries operating for King County’s Marine Division as replacement vessels for their scheduled water taxi service. Sally Fox is the first U.S. Coast Guard Sub-chapter “K” inspected passenger vessel built and delivered under the new 5A Space Performance Guidelines issued in a Memorandum regarding NVIC 9-97 Ch-1. The Memorandum is a result of the Quality Partnership working group between the U.S. Coast Guard and the Passenger Vessel Association. The new 5A Space Performance Guidelines make it possible for boat builders to design and implement suitable structural fire protection in very low fire load spaces in the construction of weight-sensitive high speed passenger vessels.

The new ferries operate in the Puget Sound providing passenger-only service from Vashon Island to downtown Seattle. The sister vessel, MV Doc Maynard operates from West Seattle to downtown. “We are honored to have this opportunity to construct world-class passenger ferries that are fuel efficient, dependable, and cost-effective,” stated All American Marine CEO, Matt Mullett. King County’s two new vessels will be supported by a third All American Marine-built catamaran, Spirit of Kingston, which was acquired by the County in 2013.

AAM partnered with the naval architecture firm, Teknicraft Design Ltd., of Auckland, New Zealand for the hull design. Each 105’ x 33’ aluminum catamaran features an advanced hull shape that was custom designed using digital modeling and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis testing. The hull design is complemented by Teknicraft’s signature integration of a wave piercer that is positioned between the catamaran sponsons to break up wave action and ensure reduced drag while enhancing passenger comfort.

The water taxis are powered by twin Cummins QSK-50 tier III engines, rated 1800 bhp @ 1900 rpm to provide a service speed of 28 knots. The design features interior seating for 250 with 28 additional outdoor seats available on the upper aft deck. The layout of each passenger deck was configured to help streamline the boarding and disembarking process. The main deck is ADA-accessible and the cabin includes designated seating areas for those with disabilities. The aft deck includes a staggered height bicycle storage rack with accommodation for 26 bicycles. As an environmentally friendly alternative to paint, the decks are covered with peel-and-stick non-slip tread and the exterior of the superstructure is wrapped in UV-stable vinyl.

Our Vessels

Weather or knot.

catamaran water taxi

The M/V Weather or Knot is a state-of-the-art jet drive catamaran landing craft with amenities aimed at keeping customers safe and comfortable during the scenic ride to their destination in the Kenai Fjords. Its front loading ramp and beach landing capabilities allow for a direct boat-to-shore landing and makes offloading safe and fast. The Weather or Knot ‘s double-hull catamaran design is created to cut through ocean chop, and its 16’ beam affords a more stable ride than a standard V-hull boat. This, along with ample padding on the kayak racks, ensures that kayaks remain undamaged even in larger seas.

The Weather or Knot has a walk-around cabin with large windows perfect for spotting wildlife. There is space for 23 passengers with seating for 14 inside the cabin and 9 on the covered back deck.

Wild Lander

catamaran water taxi

The M/V Wild Lander is our dedicated boat for passage to Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge in the heart of Aialik Fjord. It is a jet drive catamaran landing craft which boasts two 600 horsepower diesel engines, allowing us to operate and provide safe travel daily for our guests moving to and from the Glacier Lodge. This custom-built watercraft is 45 feet long with a 17.5’ beam that brings a maximum amount of comfort and stability to all on board.

The Wild Lander has covered and closed indoor seating available for 21 with space on the aft deck to seat 6 more. The stability of this boat allows easy movement from the aft, through the cabin, to the front deck for enhanced wildlife viewing experiences, along with many covered angles to get the perfect shot of the stunning landscape and any sea life encountered. The Wild Lander also allows for maximum space to transport luggage and supplies by utilizing the hulls to keep suitcases out from under foot, safe and dry for the journey.

Aligo Point

catamaran water taxi

The M/V Aligo Point is our workhorse of the line-up. Built locally in Homer, AK, this mono-hulled landing craft is a true Jack-of-all-trades and transformer! Powered by three large outboard motors, the Aligo Point is 40 feet long with a 13.5’ beam.

When needed for passenger transport the Aligo Point has inside cabin seating for up to 18 passengers. Rollers on the roof make kayak loading quick and easy and the wide open front deck can serve as overflow for hauling or as wildlife viewing space for passengers.

When the Aligo Point is called on for fewer people and more cargo, we are able to remove all seats and open the main cabin for even more open air deck space. This allows us to load particularly long or heavy items. In the past Aligo Point has been used for large loads of lumber, transporting excavators and six-wheelers, and running those extra large loads of supplies to wherever your project site may be.

Far and Away

catamaran water taxi

The M/V Far and Away is the newest addition to our fleet and is our fastest vessel. This boat was designed and built locally in Homer, AK with special consideration for maximum passenger comfort and gear hauling abilities. This custom-designed landing craft catamaran was built specifically for rounding Cape Aialik. It comes with new fused glass windows allowing for panoramic views from inside the cabin and is also equipped with a joystick technology that independently steers the 4 outboard motors, holding the boat in position for optimal wildlife viewing opportunities.

The Far and Away is a  45’ vessel with a 15.5’ beam that makes navigating the waters within Kenai Fjords National Park safe, comfortable and fun! Far and Away has indoor seating capacity for up to 24 passengers and additional covered outside aft seating for 6.

Important Notes for All Vessels

All Weather Permitting vessels are inspected yearly by the US Coast Guard and receive regular maintenance to ensure the highest performance.

For your comfort, each of our vessels features an on-board marine head for restroom breaks.

The Weather Permitting team reserves the right to limit passenger numbers well below each vessel’s total capacity based upon weather conditions, kayak/luggage storage needs or guest comfort.

For those who are serious about small passenger boats and know their territory, this is your best option. We make these models in many designs. First we can make for either inland waters with standard hull thickness for bay waters, or offshore sea conditions such as St Maarten to Hawaii where we make you hull super strong 16mm on the bottom and 8mm on the sides. In addition to hull thickness options we provide outboard or inboard engine set up. For those who need a C.O.I. vessel in many cases the standard plus model will work as an inboard diesel set up. If you need a C.O.I. fort outboard application we also make with fire retardant materials. Time to build and deliver range from four to seven months so order well in advance.
