Eind van een tijdperk voor Van der Valk: 79-jarige Wim van der Valk gaat met pensioen

Wim van der Valk staat sinds 1967 al aan het roer van de werf en neemt nu, op 79-jarige leeftijd afscheid van zijn functie. 

Van der Valk Shipyard, de bekende Nederlandse werf uit Waalwijk, kondigt een nieuwe richting aan. Wim van der Valk, de oprichter van de werf, gaat met pensioen. Op 18 april vierde de jacht- en watersportliefhebber zijn 79e verjaardag en kondigde daarmee ook zijn vertrek aan. Op 20 april brengt Van der Valk het nieuws naar buiten mét de mooie boodschap dat er een management buy-out heeft plaatsgevonden van de aandelen in de werf door verschillende ervaren jachteigenaren die een persoonlijke connectie kennen met Van der Valk en de jachten die zij al jaren bouwen.

Betrokken aandeelhouders

Wim van der Valk richtte de werf al in 1967 op en is ook al sinds dat moment ruim vijftig jaar lang nauw betrokken bij het reilen en zeilen van de werf. Het resultaat is een indrukwekkende vloot mét verschillende prijswinnaars zoals het bekende Blue Jeans in 2023 en nu in 2024 Pilot, nog een geweldig jacht van deze Nederlandse werf genomineerd voor de World Superyacht Awards 2024 . Een uitgebreid netwerk van tevreden klanten is in dit geval ook precies wat Van der Valk geholpen heeft bij deze nieuwe stap: een groep ervaren jachteigenaren die eerder drie custom superjachten bij de werf hebben besteld, vormen de nieuwe hoofdaandeelhouders. Het gaat om eigenaren van LeVen, EDGE en Lady Lene.

Mooie toekomst

De werf schrijft in een persbericht dat het vertrouwen in de toekomst groot is, mede dankzij een goed gevulde orderportefeuille waar ze in ieder geval tot in 2026 zoet mee zijn. Yoeri Bijker, head of sales van Van der Valk, vertelt: "De nieuwe hoofdaandeelhouders begrijpen het ethos van onze werf volledig, omdat ze samen met ons verschillende bekroonde jachten hebben gebouwd. Ze zijn vastbesloten om ervoor te zorgen dat Van der Valk haar Nederlandse structuur, erfgoed en kwaliteit behoudt. We hebben een solide financiële toekomst als onafhankelijke entiteit met verschillende opties voor verdere uitbreiding. Wims ongeëvenaarde nalatenschap kan niet in veiliger handen zijn."

Through the Ages: Van der Valk Shipyard

Over the course of the past five decades, Dutch shipyard Van der Valk has risen to great prominence within the superyacht industry, crafting a range of striking steel and aluminium vessels that have stood the test of time.

Van der Valk owes its unwavering success to a number of factors, one of them being its dedicated team throughout the generations that has continually evolved, and worked tirelessly to ensure that each partnership produces a superior product.

This world-renowned shipyard has always led with the sentiment that yachts must be safe, comfortable, innovative and efficient for those on board.

Through a perfectly calculated blend of science, technology, fine craftsmanship and close cooperation, Van der Valk is able to bring each owner's vision to life, all whilst considering price-quality ratio.

The Netherlands remains a sailing powerhouse, and has been so for many centuries. The word "yacht" is derived from the Dutch word "jaght", meaning to "chase". The yacht was said to be first invented by the Dutch in the 14th century, a vessel that could be used for various pursuits, which over time became a means for adventuring, particularly amongst Europe's wealthiest.

For Founder Wim Van der Valk, it all began with a similar "chase"; to channel that very same passion for yachting for pleasure, and for the pursuit of watersports. Founded in 1967, the yard gradually began to attract attention from the yachting community on a huge scale, most notably for its creation of cabin and aft cabin design cruisers from 7 to 10m.

With a rich heritage rooted in humble beginnings, Van der Valk has now amassed a global fleet of over 1000 motor yachts, and is still the only Dutch yard that builds vessels only within the 18-45m range. 

With a growing reputation, Van der Valk quickly became a staple yacht builder throughout the 1970's, most famous for the Valkkruiser, Comfort, Royal, Falcon and Super Falcon, all of which became a shining example and shorthand for quality within the industry.

By the mid 1980's, Van der Valk had launched its next venture, the Vitesse series. This series proved to be an impressive set of steel and aluminium semi-displacement motor yachts for high-end buyers. Boasting elements of progressive design, unique sailing characteristics and high resale value, the series soon became a global success.

The Continental I series, most prevalent throughout the 1990's, has now evolved into the shipyard's signature aesthetic. Hundreds were crafted for owners worldwide, complimented by the exterior design expertise of Guido de Groot, allowing Van der Valk to enter superyacht territory. 

Van der Valk continues to be praised for its forward thinking and innovation, not only for its distinctive appearance and designs, but its implementation of new technologies. The shipyard was the first to install two-axis fin anti-roll stabilisers, featured on the 37-metre Santa Maria T, launched back in 2013. 

The yard was also one of the first to recognise the potential of the revolutionary Volvo Penta IPS propulsion when it was introduced, developing a special hull and new models for this drive system. 

Van der Valk is a true gem of the yachting world, a Dutch pedigree builder of luxury yachts that offers clients an unprecedented level of customisation. 

Van der Valk’s facilities are located in Waalwijk, the Netherlands, just an hour drive from Amsterdam. Five state-of-the-art production halls are used for welding, assembly, electrical systems, piping and furniture installation.

The award winning 27m/88'7" motor yacht 'Leven' was built by Van der Valk in the Netherlands at their Waalwijk shipyard. Her interior is styled by Dutch designer design house Vripack and she was completed in 2019. This luxury vessel's exterior design is the work of Vripack.

Range & Performance

Built with a aluminium hull and aluminium superstructure, with teak decks, she has impressive speed and great efficiency thanks to her planing hull. Powered by twin diesel MTU (12V2000 M96L) 1,900hp engines, she comfortably cruises at 18 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 26 knots with a range of up to 400 nautical miles from her 3,170 gallon fuel tanks. Her low draft of 1.37m/4'6" makes her primed for accessing shallow areas and cruising close to the shorelines. Her water tanks store around 528 Gallons of fresh water. She was built to RINA (Registro Italiano Navale) classification society rules.

Located in Waalwijk, the Netherlands, Wim van der Valk Continental Yachts builds a wide range of semi-custom and custom steel and aluminium-hulled motor yachts from 15 to 37 metres in length.

Yacht Builder Wim van der Valk founded the shipyard in 1968 and entered the pleasure boat market with a line of 7- to 10-metre cabin and aft-cabin cruisers.

In the mid 1980s, Wim van der Valk launched the Vitesse series of steel and aluminum, semi-displacement motor yachts, which won international acclaim thanks to their progressive design, great cruising characteristics and high resale value.

The yacht builder introduced its aft-cabin Continental I series in the 1990s and to date has produced more than 100 yachts of this design. Today, the shipyard offers three Continental series and a Continental Trawler line ranging up to 37 metres.

Wim van der Valk has built a reputation for offering high-end motor yachts at very competitive prices. Each model incorporates an extensive list of high-end options as standard equipment. Clients have the ability to completely customise interiors and exteriors to suit their individual tastes, including making modifications to the superstructure or bulwarks, or even creating a totally new design.

Notable Yacht

The Next Episode , a 27.20-metre Continental III luxury yacht, launched in 2014 featuring an exterior and interior created by Guido de Groot Design. Her semi-displacement hull is made of lightweight aluminium and is powered by triple Volvo Penta IPS-1200 D13-900, 6-cylinder engine with IPS drive technology.

Specialisations
