YYachts “Volante”, here is the new Y7

The latest Y7 by YYachts has converted yet another owner to sailing yachts.  “About 25 per cent of our Y7 owners used to have motorboats,” commented North German boatbuilder Michael Schmidt, who is behind the project.

The Y7 is a luxurious boat featuring large cabins and a separate skipper’s suite with its own cockpit access. Nonetheless, performance is maintained thanks to its carbon fiber construction.

“When Michael and I first talked, he asked for a boat that you would immediately want to sail at first sight,” explains veteran designer Bill Tripp , who drew her lines . “A boat that embodies modern beauty, performance, simplicity and ease of use, along with the capability to go anywhere.”

Simplicity without sacrificing performance

A key part of this is the ability to sail well in light airs . The deck and hull are both in carbon fibre, as is the mast and boom, for a total displacement of 29,5 tonnes . And yet she can set 300 square metres of sail upwind, and has the option of a whopping 550 square metre gennaker on the bowsprit for downwind work. A feature that is pretty much unique.

Simplicity is another key feature of YYachts’ Volante . With a self-tacking jib and both halyards and sheets lead via under-deck conduits to the helm, it is relatively straightforward for one person to handle this boat. While this system is common on smaller yachts, it is more complex to implement as yachts grow in size, and relatively rare on a 70-footer.

For close quarters work, there is a retractable bow-thruster with joystick control for easy docking . Combined with the twin 52kW Nanni diesels , this makes the boat manoeuvrable for its size. The twin engines have another benefit according to Schmidt: “It’s easy to install and about the same weight as a single engine,” he says. “And with just one engine at optimum revs, you can cruise at 7.2kn, so you have a huge range.”

Simplicity was achieved through many careful choices. There is no backstay, for instance – the heavily aft-swept spreaders do that job, just as they do on a catamaran. Schmidt says this makes for a better shape in the fathead main. It also means there are very little hydraulics on board – all the winches are electrically operated, as is the vast top-opening lazarette on the aft deck, which can accommodate a tender up to 3.45m long. Only the boomvang uses hydraulics, and Schmidt reasons that you could easily substitute a spare halyard as a topping lift if the system broke.

The interiors

Down below, this approach plays out in a slightly different way. Here there is digital switching for climate control, entertainment and lighting; dishwashers and multiple fridges; wine fridges and TVs. But there is still simplicity of sorts. ”Volante” by YYachts shows a minimal Nordic interior. Colours are tone-on-tone for a subdued, moody setting.

Stitched leather hand straps run along a track set into the headlining in the saloon . A simple leather thong unlatches every locker door. The lighting is all via hidden LED strips, giving a warm finish to the interior. The headlining follows the natural curves of the yacht down onto the hull and even the bulkheads supporting the deck above are integrated into this expanse of white.

Standard choice throughout the boat is between a light chalked oak finish or a white finish with smoked oak cabinetry , but almost anything is possible, Schmidt says. With the white of the headlining, the hull lights, and the low-profile windows in the coachroof, there is plenty of natural light in the saloon.

The interior volume is configured into several modules , giving some simple choices. It is possible to opt for three or four cabins, double or twins, and move the midships galley back to the port side . In all layouts, there is a small cabin with two bunks and a private shower room for the captain and a mate.

Sixth Y7 from YYachts

BOOTE EXCLUSIV sailed the first Y7 "Bella" off Mallorca in summer 2019; you can find a detailed portrait in issue 5/19 or here . Stylistically, the Y7 can be categorised as maritime minimalism, which can be seen in the exterior by Bill Tripp and is particularly evident in the hygge interior by the product designers and architects from Norm Architects in Copenhagen. The layout offers a choice of three or four guest cabins, one of which is located in the bow and is reserved for the owner. The galley on "Volante" is located amidships and can be moved aft in front of the crew accommodation on the port side if desired.

The standard sail area of 300 square metres, in combination with the sporty tripp lines, the 3.50 metre deep T-keel and the displacement of 29.5 tonnes, aims to keep the engine at rest even when the wind is blowing at two to three Beaufort. There is also the option of attaching a 550 square metre gennaker or 350 square metre Code 0 to the fixed bowsprit. Thanks to push-button trim, self-tacking headsails and the absence of aft or back stays, the Y7 is even ideal for solo sailing. All sail systems and the lazarette folding mechanism are electrically operated; only the kicker relies on hydraulics.

The 21.68 metre long and 5.75 metre wide "Volante" will be followed this year by two more deliveries of YYachts' entry-level model, which appeals to a wide range of customers. "In fact, around 25 per cent of all Y7 owners previously owned a motor yacht," says YYachts founder Michael Schmidt. The owner of "Bella" also previously travelled without sails. A Y8 and the new flagship Tripp 90 are also being fitted out in the YYachts halls in Greifswald, both of which are also made of carbon fibre.
