“Slender is fast,” coined Oluf back in the day when he built racing boats. When I saw the new model from Luffe, I immediately knew this was the boat I wanted. With its sleek hull, the Luffe 3.6 is a perfect boat for the Swedish coastline, where you need to point high on the upwind leg and make quick tacks. With a lightweight boat, upgraded with form-stable laminated sails and a carbon fiber rig, you’ll want to sail in the “fast lane.” The boat is very easy to drive, and my motto has always been to get from marina to marina as quickly as possible, something she has definitely achieved. I have mostly sailed along the Swedish west coast but have also quickly crossed the Kattegat for visits to Skagen and Læsø.

Twenty-two people were on board the Bayesian superyacht including British technology tycoon Mike Lynch, his wife and 18-year-old daughter, and Morgan Stanley International boss Jonathan Bloomer.

Details have emerged of the 22 people who were on board the superyacht that sank off the coast of Sicily.

The British-flagged vessel named Bayesian was carrying 12 passengers and 10 members of crew when it got into difficulty in the early hours of Monday.

Seven bodies have now been recovered. The other 15 people on board were rescued.

British technology tycoon Mike Lynch was among the original six people missing. On Thursday, divers confirmed his body had been recovered.

Raised in Ilford, east London by Irish parents, the 59-year-old made millions with the software company Autonomy he set up in 1996.

He had an estimated net worth of £852m, according to the 2023 Sunday Times Rich List, and is believed to have owned the yacht.

Off the back of Automomy's global success, Mr Lynch was given the roles of science adviser to former prime minister David Cameron and non-executive director of the BBC.

The Cambridge maths and sciences graduate sold the firm for £8.64bn to US giant Hewlett Packard (HP) in 2011.

Dubbed the "British Bill Gates", Mr Lynch has been in the headlines in recent months over a high-profile fraud case related to the sale of Autonomy to HP in 2011.

HP accused him of deliberately overstating the value of the company before it was acquired by the American technology firm. Mr Lynch denied any wrongdoing.

In June, a US jury cleared him of all charges .

Hannah Lynch

Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah Lynch was also on board. A body believed to be that of the teenager was recovered on Friday from the yacht wreckage.

She had been on holiday with her parents, having secured a place to study English at the University of Oxford, according to reports.

Her former school, Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith, west London, said they were "incredibly shocked by the news that Hannah and her father are among those missing in this tragic accident" when the yacht first sank.

Angela Bacares

Mr Lynch's wife Angela Bacares was on board the yacht and was rescued.

The 57-year-old said she and Mr Lynch were awoken by the boat "tilting" at 4am - half an hour before it sank.

Jonathan Bloomer

Jonathan Bloomer, the chairman of investment bank Morgan Stanley International, was confirmed dead on Thursday.

According to the Financial Times, Mr Bloomer appeared as a defence witness for Mr Lynch during his US criminal trial and the pair were good friends. He also chaired Autonomy's audit committee.

The 70-year-old was the chief executive of UK-Hong Kong insurer Prudential until he was ousted by the board in 2005.

He was also chairman of the insurance provider Hiscox.

Judy Bloomer

Mr Bloomer's wife Judy was on the yacht trip with her husband. Divers confirmed they found her body on Thursday.

Mrs Bloomer was a former board member at The Eve Appeal charity, which focuses on gynaecological cancers.

The charity described her as a "brilliant champion for women's health and medical research... an incredible supporter, committee member, and trustee of our charity for over 20 years".

Recaldo Thomas

The yacht's on-board chef Recaldo Thomas died in the sinking.

He was Canadian-Antiguan and part of the crew of the Bayesian.

His body was the first to be recovered from the wreckage.

Chris Morvillo

US lawyer Chris Morvillo was among those divers found dead on Thursday.

The father-of-two worked on Mr Lynch's US fraud trial and was a partner of law firm Clifford Chance's US branch.

Mr Morvillo was assistant attorney for the Southern District of New York between 1995 and 2005 and worked on the terrorist investigation into the 9/11 attacks.

In a recent LinkedIn post, he thanked the legal team that helped win Mr Lynch's trial.

Signing off the post, he said: "And, finally, a huge thank you to my patient and incredible wife, Neda Morvillo, and my two strong, brilliant, and beautiful daughters, Sabrina Morvillo and Sophia Morvillo.

"None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home. And they all lived happily ever after…."

Neda Morvillo

Mr Morvillo's wife Neda died in the disaster alongside her husband.

The 57-year-old had a luxury jewellery brand, which she ran under her maiden name Neda Nassiri.

Ayla Ronald

Ayla Ronald, a senior associate at Clifford Chance, survived the yacht disaster, the law firm confirmed.

The 36-year-old worked alongside Chris Morvillo in helping defend Mike Lynch in court.

Clifford Chance said in a statement: "Our utmost priority is providing support to the family as well as our colleague Ayla Ronald, who together with her partner, thankfully survived the incident."

She is originally from Christchurch, New Zealand, but lives in London, her father told local media there.

He said she was left "very shaken" but "she and her partner are alive".

Charlotte Golunski

Charlotte Golunski was on board the yacht and was rescued along with her one-year-old daughter, Sofia.

She spoke to Italian newspaper La Repubblica, confirming she survived the yacht sinking and told how she kept her daughter alive after she was rescued.

"I held her afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning," she said.

"It was all dark. In the water I couldn't keep my eyes open. I screamed for help but all I could hear around me was the screams of others."

The 35-year-old is a partner at one of Mr Lynch's firms - Invoke Capital - and has worked there since 2012, according to her LinkedIn profile.

She also worked at Hewlett Packard, which acquired Autonomy in 2011, for 11 months.

Before that, she studied history at the University of Oxford.

James Emsley

Ms Golunski's partner James Emsley was also rescued from the yacht, according to Sicily's civil protection agency.

The 36-year-old is the father of her one-year-old daughter.

James Cutfield

The 51-year-old captain of the yacht spoke to Italian newspaper La Repubblica after he was rescued.

Mr Cutfield, from New Zealand, was taken for treatment at the Termini Imerese emergency unit, where he told the newspaper: "We didn't see it coming."

Leah Randall

Leah Randall was part of the Bayesian crew and survived the sinking.

She was pictured going ashore in Porticello on Monday morning and is from South Africa.

Her mother Heidi told Sky News said she was "beyond relieved that my daughter's life was spared by the grace of God".

"It doesn't make it any easier living with the heartache of those who have lost their lives [or are] missing. My very deepest condolences to the chef's family as they formed a great friendship," she said.

Katja Chicken

Katja Chicken was another South African member of crew on board the Bayesian and was pictured being brought to safety in Porticello on Monday.

The Italian coastguard confirmed on Tuesday evening that Leo Eppel, a crew member, also survived the yacht sinking.

Vladimir Putin has delivered a “clear message” to the West about the consequences of providing Ukraine with long-range missiles to strike targets inside Russia, the Kremlin said on Friday.

“The statement made by President Putin yesterday is very important. It is extremely clear, unambiguous and does not allow for double readings. We have no doubt that this statement reached those it was intended for,” Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin’s spokesperson, said.

The Russian president said on Thursday that providing Ukraine with long-range missiles would result in the West’s “direct participation” in the war.

“Of course, this substantially changes the very essence, the nature of the conflict. If that is the case, we will take corresponding decisions based on the threats that will be created to us,” Putin said.

His warning came as Sir Keir Starmer and David Lammy travelled to Washington on Friday for a meeting with Joe Biden, in which they are expected to discuss lifting restrictions on British Storm Shadow missiles being used by Ukraine.

Kyiv has repeatedly called on Western nations to allow its forces to use the missile, which has a range of up to 250km, to strike defensive targets inside Russia.

Nato is already “waging war” on Russia by giving Kyiv orders on which targets to strike, Vladimir Putin’s close ally has said.

Vyacheslav Volodin, chairman of Russia’s lower parliament, made the comments after the Russian president warned the West against providing Ukraine with long-range missiles to strike targets inside Russia.

Mr Volodin said discussions surrounding Kyiv’s use of the Western-made missiles are “nothing but an attempt to camouflage and conceal their direct participation in military action”.

“They (Nato personnel) determine which cities in our country will be attacked, coordinate military actions and give orders. Nato has become a participant in military actions in Ukraine. They are waging war on our country,” Mr Volodin said.

It comes after Putin warned Russia would take appropriate action should Ukraine be given long-range weapons, including Storm Shadow missiles. “This substantially changes the very essence, the nature of the conflict,” he said.

Sir Keir Starmer and David Lammy are preparing to hold talks with Joe Biden in Washington on Friday over lifting restrictions on the weapons. Kyiv has repeatedly asked for the missiles so it can carry out defensive strikes on targets inside Russia.

There is particular concern that it could lead to Russia providing Iran and its proxy forces with technological help to attack US forces.

Senior American intelligence officials have raised such concerns in classified briefings, the New York Times reported.

Kyiv said its forces repelled 64 assaults near Kurakhove on Thursday and 36 near Pokrovsk.

Zelensky: 49 ukrainians returned from russian captivity.

Some 49 Ukrainians have been returned from Russian captivity, Volodymyr Zelensky said on Friday.

The Ukrainian president said those returned included soldiers, police officers and civilians. It also included fighters from the siege of Mariupol in 2022.

“Among them is Leniye Umerova, a young woman taken hostage by the Russians when she came to take care of her sick father,” Mr Zelensky said.

Russia cuts off water supply in pokrovsk.

Russia has cut off water supplies to the city of Pokrovsk as Moscow continues its relentless assault on the east Ukrainian region of Donetsk.

Pokrovsk, a small city in the Donbas region, is a key hub for army logistics and has faced relentless shelling for several months.

“As a result of the hostilities, the work of the modular filter station, thanks to which Pokrovsk received water, was stopped,” Vadym Filashkin, Donetsk’s governor, said.

Locals have been urged to evacuate immediately.

“The situation is difficult and will not get better in the near future,” Mr Filashkin added.

President Zelensky has relied on Britain to lead the charge of the Allies, holding off the illegal Russian invasion and thence to preventing the destruction of schools and hospitals. It’s a dark portent of Labour’s leadership that he now has now indicated concerns over wavering support.

To see our new foreign secretary in Kyiv speaking, but saying nothing of consequence, is hard for those of us who have been helping Ukraine from the start. It must be even more devastating for the rank and file in Ukraine who have lost so much and face a third freezing and dark winter.

Who is advising David Lammy? For the want of a Storm Shadow or two, the Ukrainian population are at a point of potential Russian subjugation. Missiles, glide bombs and long-range drones have been hammering into hospitals, schools and the power grid for months. This chaos could have been brought to an abrupt halt, if the UK unshackled Ukraine and allowed them to strike these threats from the Russian airfields from whence they came.

Presumably, the foreign secretary is concerned too much by escalation, and feels the need to appease the Left of his party by focusing on halting some arms licenses to Israel.

Six diplomats were expelled by Russia after officers became “tired” of chasing them around Moscow as they engaged in “classic British espionage”, an FSB employee told Russian state-controlled news channel Rossiya-24.

This reportedly included making rapid changes of public transport and “sitting for several hours on benches in the freezing cold” as they waited to meet members from banned groups.

Their spouses were allegedly deployed as spies, while young children were used to ‘cover up’ their spying activity, the officer added. “Basically, one cannot speak of any diplomatic etiquette,” the officer told the news channel.

The Foreign Office has rejected Russia’s “baseless” claims that six British diplomats who were expelled from Moscow were spies.

“The accusations made today by the FSB against our staff are completely baseless,” an FCDO spokesman said.

“The Russian authorities revoked the diplomatic accreditation of 6 UK diplomats in Russia last month, following action taken by the UK government in response to Russian state directed activity across Europe and in the UK.

Russian state media have named the diplomats expelled from Moscow as Jessica Davenport, Grace Elvin, Callum Duff, Catherine McDonnell, Thomas Stevenette and Blake Pattel.

Ms Davenport was previously a second secretary and assistant to Nigel Casey, the Russian ambassador. Mr Duff, Mr Pattel and Mr Stevenette are also second secretaries, according to the Russian foreign ministry website. Ms McDonnell is a first secretary.

British expats ‘expelled from moscow in august’.

Six British diplomats who were expelled from Moscow over accusations of spying and sabotage left the country in August, a Whitehall source told Sky News.

Their removal was part of a wave of tit-for-tat expulsions, the source added.

Russia said on Friday it had revoked the accreditation of six British diplomats in Moscow whose actions it claimed showed signs of “spying and sabotage”.

The FSB said it had documents showing that a British Foreign Office department in London was coordinating what it called “the escalation of the political and military situation”.

The six diplomats were named on Russian state TV, which reportedly showed photographs of them leaving the country.

Russia’s decision to expel six British diplomats from Moscow is “punishment” for the UK’s role in providing weapons to Ukraine, a former national security adviser has said.

Lord Peter Ricketts told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme that the statement which confirmed the expulsion of the diplomats from Moscow was “trumped up”.

“We’re told the Russian spy agency has documents from a department in the foreign office, which say that the task of the embassy is ensuring Russia’s strategic defeat against Ukraine,” Lord Rickets said.

“Well, surprise, surprise. That has been British declared politics for two-and-a-half years.”

He added that because the embassy is not a large one, it will inhibit what it is able to do.

British forces shadowed russian warships and planes in past week.

Britain’s Armed Forces have shadowed Russian warships and planes in the past week, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has revealed.

The Royal Navy followed a Russian attack submarine and corvette through the Channel, and RAF jets were scrambled to monitor two Russian aircraft.

HMS Iron Duke, a type 23 frigate, monitored the progress of the Novorossiysk, a kilo-class submarine, and its supporting tug as they passed through the Dover Strait, before a similar operation to shadow the Stoiky, a corvette, and a tanker.

A patrol ship, HMS Tyne, was also involved in the operation to monitor the Stoiky.

On Wednesday, two Typhoons from RAF Lossiemouth were scrambled to intercept a pair of Bear-F maritime reconnaissance aircraft, which operated near the UK without entering UK sovereign airspace.

Russia is only making marginal gains in its counteroffensive in Kursk due to repeated Ukrainian attacks, military analysts have suggested.

Moscow’s forces made marginal advances in the west if Vishnevka and in northern Krasnooktyabrskoye (both southwest of Korenevo), according to the Institute for the Study of War.

In effect, Russia has only made advances in areas where Ukrainian forces were not yet fully in control of or attempting to control.

As a result, Russian forces will face more difficulty when it attempts to take back control of areas where Ukrainian forces are fully in control.

Kyiv said it has taken 1,300 sq km of land across more than 100 settlements since launching its daring invasion on Aug 6.

Lynch, who was  acquitted in June  in a big U.S. fraud trial, was among six people who remain unaccounted for after their chartered sailboat sank off Porticello, when a tornado over the water known as a waterspout struck the area overnight, said Salvo Cocina of Sicily’s civil protection agency.

One body was recovered, and police divers spent the day trying to reach the hull of the ship, which was resting at a depth of 50 meters (163 feet) off Porticello where it had been anchored, rescue authorities said. They returned to the site after 10 p.m. to see if it would be possible to search through the night, when weather conditions were expected to worsen, said Luca Cari, spokesman of the fire rescue service.

It had a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers, the Italian coast guard said. A sudden fierce storm had battered the area overnight, and struck the place precisely where the 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged Bayesian had been moored.

“They were in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Cocina, noting that another superyacht nearby wasn't as badly damaged and helped rescue some of the 15 survivors, who included Lynch's wife Angela Bacares.

The Bayesian was notable for its single 75-meter (246-feet) mast — one of the world’s tallest made of aluminum and which was lit up at night, just hours before it sank. Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $215,000) a week.

One of the survivors, identified as Charlotte Golunski, said she momentarily lost hold of her 1-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, Italian news agency ANSA reported, quoting the mother. The father, James Emsley, also survived, said Cocina.

Karsten Borner, the captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, said he had noticed the Bayesian nearby during the storm but after it calmed he saw a red flare and realized the ship had simply disappeared, ANSA and the Giornale di Sicilia newspaper reported. Borner said he and a crew member boarded their tender and found a lifeboat with 15 people, some of them injured, who they then took aboard and alerted the coast guard.

Eight of those rescued were hospitalized while the others were taken to a hotel. One body believed to be the cook was found near the wreck, but six others were unaccounted for and believed inside the hull, said Cari, the fire rescue spokesperson. The rescue operations, which were visible from shore, involved helicopters and rescue boats from the coast guard, fire rescue and civil protection service.

Fisherman Francesco Cefalu’ said he had seen a flare from shore at around 4:30 a.m. and immediately set out to the site but by the time he got there, the Bayesian had already sunk, with only cushions, wood and other items from the superyacht floating in the water.

“But for the rest, we didn’t find anyone,” he said from the port hours later. He said that he immediately alerted the coast guard and stayed on site for three hours, but didn't find any survivors. “I think they are inside, all the missing people.”

He said he had been up early to check the weather to see if he could go fishing, and surmised that a sudden waterspout had struck the yacht.

“It could be that the mast broke, or the anchor at the prow pulled it, I don’t know,” he said.

Cocina said the crew and passengers hailed from a variety of countries: In addition to Britain and the United States, passengers and crew were from Antigua, France, Germany, Ireland, Myanmar, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Spain, he said.

Among the dead and missing, four were British, two were American, and one was a man with dual citizenship from Canada and Antigua, according to Luciano Pischedda, the Italian Coast Guard official overseeing the rescue operations.

The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch is deploying a team of four inspectors to Italy to conduct a preliminary assessment. The Foreign Commonwealth and Development office said it was “providing consular support to a number of British nationals and their families.”

Dutch foreign ministry spokesperson Casper Soetekouw said the lone Dutch citizen on board, a man, had been rescued and was not in life-threatening condition.

Lynch, once hailed as Britain’s king of technology, was cleared in June of fraud and conspiracy charges related to Hewlett Packard’s $11 billion takeover of his company, Autonomy Corp.

The not-guilty verdicts followed an 11-week criminal trial in San Francisco that delved into the history of HP’s  2011 acquisition  of Autonomy, a business software firm founded by Lynch.

The  fraud accusations  represented a dramatic turn in the fortunes of an entrepreneur once described as the Bill Gates of Britain — a title he seemed to live up to when he netted an $800 million from the Autonomy sale.

The acquittal vindicated Lynch, who had vehemently denied wrong doing and portrayed HP as a technological train wreck.

“I’m looking forward to returning the UK and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field,” Lynch said in a statement released after the verdict.

The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, can accommodate 12 passengers in four double cabins, a triple and the master suite, plus crew accommodations, according to Charter World and Yacht Charters.

The vessel, which previously was named Salute when it flew under a Dutch flag, featured a sleek, minimalist interior of light wood with Japanese accents designed by the French designer Remi Tessier, according to descriptions and photos on the charter sites.

Russia has revoked the accreditation of six British diplomats in Moscow, accusing them of spying.

The FSB security service said the Russian foreign ministry has terminated the accreditation of six employees in the British Embassy in Moscow’s political department.

The move was in response to “numerous unfriendly steps” by London and after “signs of spying and sabotage” were found in the actions of the diplomats, the FSB said in a statement.

The news comes as Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer meets US President Joe Biden in Washington and is expected to discuss Ukraine’s plea for restrictions to be lifted on using Western weaponry against Russian targets.

The US and UK this week announced further financial support for Ukraine, including a £600 million package from the UK and 717 million dollars (£550 million) from the US to meet immediate humanitarian, energy and stabilisation needs.

On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that allowing long-range strikes would mean that Nato countries, the US, and European countries are “at war with Russia”.

Sir Keir responded to the remarks ahead of his meeting with Mr Biden, telling journalists that “Ukraine has the right to self-defence” but stressing that “we don’t seek any conflict with Russia”.

The diplomats will be expelled, Russian state TV reported, citing an FSB official.

Maria Zakharova, Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, said they were carrying out “subversive actions aimed at causing harm to our people”.

She said: “We fully agree with the assessments of the activities of the British so-called diplomats expressed by the Russian FSB.

“The British Embassy has gone far beyond the limits outlined by the Vienna Conventions.”

Russian state TV reported that the six diplomats met with independent media and rights groups that Russian authorities have declared to be “foreign agents”.

Earlier this year, the UK ordered Russia’s defence attache in London to leave, claiming he was a spy.

Moscow then expelled a Royal Naval officer based at the British Embassy in Moscow, giving him a week to leave the country.

The UK also revoked the diplomatic status of two Russian-owned properties in the UK that were believed to have been used for intelligence purposes, and placed new restrictions on Russian diplomatic visas.
