Breathe the word “Superfast” in the company of any red-blooded car aficionado, and it’s guaranteed to conjure-up images of Ferrari’s classic 500 Superfast from the ‘60s and, more recently, the thundering V-12-engined 812 Superfast.

So, if you’re Italy’s AB Yachts and you’re looking to name your fastest, most thrilling yacht ever—the 68-mph, 7,800-horsepower, AB 100—you could do worse than christen it “Superfast.”

The Viareggio-based yard—part of the NEXT Yacht Group—created this first AB 100 Superfast for a European client who, according to AB Yachts’ head of sales Giacomo Benelli, had an all-consuming passion for going fast. Very fast. So instead of the typical three 1,990-hp MAN diesels that come with the regular AB 100, he opted for a trio of 2,600-hp MTUs. The result; a pedal-to-the-metal top speed of 59 knots, or 68 mph, and a still-speedy 58-mph cruising speed.

And as with the “standard” AB 100, the Superfast delivers all that thrust through triple water jets from Sweden’s Marine Jet Power.  A single joystick controls the jets, which are configured with steerable outer units and a fixed, central thruster.

One impressive claim from AB is that at a cruising speed of around 50 knots, the Superfast’s fuel burn is slightly less than it is at 25 knots. According to Benelli, it’s all down to the design of the 100’s slippery, semi-displacement hull, and the efficiency of the MJP waterjets and MTUs.

“We’ve been building fast yachts since 1992, and for those 30 years, the only type of propulsion we’ve used is the water jet,” says Benelli. “The Superfast also draws just over four feet, which is perfect for the shallow waters of the Bahamas.”

They also offer real benefits in handling. Like some oversized jet-ski, the Superfast can turn on a dime and—amazingly—stop virtually in its own length, almost from top speed, by reversing the thrust.

The hull itself is constructed from vacuum-bagged GRP with carbon fiber reinforcement in key areas, and adhesives developed for the aerospace industry.

While the Superfast is based closely on the design of the original AB 100, its development coincided with a major redesign of the series. The key changes included the addition of oversize, almost full-length hull windows and sole-to-ceiling salon windows.

AB’s in-house engineers and designers also came-up with a clever design for the swim platform and beach club.

Mounted on a four-link, pantograph-style hydraulic mechanism, the oversize center section of the swim platform can cantilever upwards, revealing a tender and toy garage. With the platform in its raised position, it also makes one awesome diving board.

The new hull layout also focuses on providing plenty of sunning and lounging areas. From the oversized rear cockpit, with its almost full-width sofa and sun pad, to the huge forward deck with its vast cushions and U-shaped sofa and table, it’s a sun lover’s dream.

There are also tanning beds up on the top deck flybridge. But lowish stanchion rails might make it precarious for kids, and the lack of shade would be a problem in the mid-day sun.

One major focus with this new Superfast is its emphasis on open indoor/outdoor living. Huge glass doors between the salon and back deck, fold away completely to connect the two areas. And, at the request of the owner, the usual partition between the salon and the helm was removed to open up the entire living and dining space.

“Everything is on one level, so there’s an easy flow throughout the boat,” says Benelli.

Below decks, the owner went for a four-cabin layout with beds for 10, including a 22-foot-wide, full-beam master stateroom amidships. He also specified a below-deck galley.

Apart from gaining bragging rights, will any owner take the new Superfast to its super-fast 68-mph top speed?

“Probably not all the time. But hitting almost 60 knots feels like you’re in a Formula 1 car. A Ferrari, obviously,” adds Benelli. “It is a lot of fun.”

But it also gets you places fast. “Portofino to St. Tropez takes less than a couple of hours. Miami to Cat Cay, Bahamas takes 45 minutes,” says Benelli. “There’s a reason we call it Superfast.”

AB Yachts 100 Superfast

Dating back to its founding 30 years ago, AB Yachts has focused on high-performance yachts equipped with water jets. Given that AB Yachts is an Italian shipyard, that emphasis on speed comes packaged with sleek styling. The builder continues to add larger models, and when it launched Hull No. 1 of its 100-foot AB 100 series in 2016, it announced a 52-knot top-end speed. Other semicustom maxis existed in this size range, but none clocked on the radar gun quite like this one did. Advances in engine technology and lightweight construction have since allowed the shipyard to make the yacht even faster. The same series is now reportedly capable of a 54-knot maximum speed.

Which wasn’t enough for one particular customer—or for AB Yachts.

AB Yachts 100 Superfast

Together, they created the AB 100 Superfast, with what the yard says is a 59-knot maximum velocity and a cruising speed of 53 knots. This makes the AB 100 Superfast not just the fastest boat in the builder’s range but also a boat that’s faster than most, if not all, other yachts of its size from any shipyard. In fact, the AB 100 Superfast’s top speed is about 25 knots higher than that of other high-profile maxis in the 100- to 110-foot range.

The owner and shipyard shared the belief that an invitation to customize a semicustom yacht should indeed mean customization. AB Yachts allows clients to tailor exterior styling and interior design, and the AB 100 Superfast differs from its predecessor in several ways. The avid cruiser wanted to take his personal bond with the sea to a higher level. “That was the key goal that we interpreted in the interest of our owner,” says Gennaro Candida De Matteo, the CEO of AB Yachts’ parent company, Next Yacht Group.

AB Yachts 100 Superfast

The first hint is seen in the AB 100 Superfast’s profile, which has more glass than the AB 100. Along the main deck, the glass is nearly sole-to-ceiling, complemented by glass insets in the lowered bulwarks. The dark tint lends the illusion that the glass wraps uninterrupted from one side of the yacht and around to the other. Belowdecks, the small oval ports are gone, replaced with two long stretches of glass to port and starboard.

Aft, like any large yacht, the AB 100 Superfast has a table and settee. The setup seems unassuming enough for enjoying alfresco meals or the spirited ride. But at the press of a button, both the table and the settee’s backrest lower to ensure that the owner and his guests truly have uninterrupted views when they’re seated inside the open-plan main deck. (On a related note, the owner opted to increase the perception of volume inside by eliminating the bulkhead between the helm and dining area.) A similarly lowering settee backrest is on the flybridge too.

Two more cruise-enhancing surprises are at the waterline. The first: The yacht has a nearly full-beam settee nestled against the transom, providing the ultimate front-row seat to the swimming and water-toy action. Consider it a permanent open-air beach club. The second surprise is how the toys launch.

AB Yachts 100 Superfast

“This is one of the most interesting features of this boat,” De Matteo says. At the press of a button, the backrest rises up to reveal the garage. The transformer-type swim platform rises too, so a RIB or other toys can slide directly into the water.

When peace and quiet are what the owner and his guests want, they can retire belowdecks, where there are accommodations for eight. This owner chose two twins, a VIP and a full-beam master stateroom. While some maxi opens look and feel tight below, the AB 100 Superfast doesn’t—even with its 22-foot-3-inch beam being comparable to that of slightly larger maxis from other builders. Adding to the owner’s comfort, a port within the picture window in his stateroom opens.

Even with the emphasis on his own enjoyment, the owner and AB Yachts didn’t overlook the practical needs of the four-person crew. For example, stairs by the inside helm—which the owner designed with the shipyard to achieve an automotive-type look in carbon fiber and leather—lead directly down to the Corian-outfitted galley and crew mess. The laundry area is right here as well. The foredeck leisure area, meanwhile, has significant stowage beneath the equally sizable sun bed.

AB Yachts 100 Superfast

Most people who end up seeing the AB 100 Superfast cutting across the horizon will probably consider the yacht to be a maxed-out maxi. Yes, it is an unabashedly fast yacht—and one of the fastest superyachts in the world to boot. But from the American walnut soles and furnishings to the view-enhancing features and re-imagined use of space, the AB 100 Superfast also reflects a clear, custom vision.

One that just happens to be capable of nearly 60-knot speeds.

AB Yachts 100 Superfast

Power Punch

The AB 100 Superfast gets its head-turning performance from triple 2,600 hp MANs with water jets. The AB 100, by comparison, had three 1,900 hp MANs and water jets. Kevlar and carbon-fiber construction keep weight down, part of the shipyard’s practice across its models.

American Success Story

While AB Yachts’ American clients are similar to European counterparts in being attracted to speed, the AB 100 series’ 4-foot-3-inch draft has more specifically led to sales stateside. Clients who regularly cruise between South Florida and the Bahamas need the shallow-water access.

AB Yachts launches its first AB 100 superyacht

AB Yachts has launched its first AB 100 superyacht hull, named Spectre , ahead of a scheduled delivery this summer.

The 30 metre AB 100 is built in GRP and Carbon and will hit a maximum speed of 52 knots, thanks to her three MAN engines producing 1900 hp each and MJP waterjets. This would put Spectre firmly in the list of the world’s fastest superyachts .

With naval architecture and design completed in-house by AB Yachts , the first AB 100 yacht has been developed to bring a family feeling to its striking, sporty appearance. Outside, her hull and superstructure is painted in two different tones of metallic silver to highlight her aggressive lines.

Her outdoor areas allow guests to enjoy an exciting blast in comfort, with a second steering position on her flybridge and an L-shaped sofa and two sunbeds for guests. The foredeck of the first AB 100 hull is fitted with two coffee tables, a u-shaped sofa and a comfy sunbed.

Inside, Spectre  is furnished in light grey tones and flooded with natural light on account of her large lateral windows. Her interior is divided into a lounge area, equipped with a comfortable sofa and 75” TV, and a dining area that can seat eight around a marble table.

She can accommodate eight in two guest cabins with double beds, one VIP cabin and one master cabin, all of which have private bathrooms.

The AB 100 design is the first of many new projects that the yard’s parent company, Fipa Group, is completing for the 2016 summer season.

Its profile leaves no doubt: performance.

Presentation

Yacht class n°29 (june-july-august 2022), next yacht group.

With such an explicit name and such a streamlined silhouette, the AB 100 Superfast seems designed to hit speeds rarely reached by pleasure crafts. Actually, the shipyard announces a top speed of 60 knots, no less. Fortunately, this sportfly also has for objective cruising in a very modern decor.

Written by Alain Brousse – Photos : All rights reserved

Flashback: in 2017, AB Yachts, then part of Fipa Group (CBI Navi & Maiora), launched its 100 foot sportfly. We actually tested it with a “reasonable” engine configuration – 2 x 2 900 hp diesels -, and reached a maximum speed of 48 knots, which was 6 knots less than expected by the shipyard, but enough to boast of her sporty character. Four years later, Next Yachts Group, which has since acquired Fipa Group, did it again with a new, even more attractive version of this AB 100. And, most of all, she comes with an even better engine configuration combining three 2 600 hp MTU 16V2000 M96L, each coupled to MJP (Marine Jet Power) waterjets. The tone is set, the new AB 100 ambitions to hit 60 knots, which will significantly reduce the time between two stopovers, at least in good weather. Unfortunately, we did not have the pleasure to “fly” above the sea at this speed, as we had to settle for a simple visit during the last Cannes Yachting Festival.

Beautiful exterior surfaces to the delight of passengers

Just like the 2017 model, the exterior design was entrusted to the shipyard’s in-house studio. It is undeniable she was redesigned to reflect even more the notion of performance. Her rocket-like profile cannot go unnoticed. The windscreen that extends laterally with smoked glass, creating a great impression, deserves perfect scores! It is accentuated by the flybridge’s white fairing that makes it even more “brilliant”. And don’t forget the metallic grey hull! This AB 100 has an undeniable power of seduction. Considering the hull side windows, plenty of light can be expected in the lower deck. But first, let’s look at the outdoors to discover the stern. It boasts the traditional teak swim platform, whose central part lifts up to allow the tender to leave its garage, provided that the transom is also raised. Once the tender launched, the platform goes back to its primary role: a beach club with a six-seat sofa. Another place of relaxation, the foredeck (30 m2) boasts a lounge (six guests) and a vast solarium. Finally, a starboard staircase goes from the cockpit to the totally uncovered flybridge of 50 m2, which only has discreet equipment: two large solariums and a dinette for six to avoid altering the AB 100’s silhouette.

The main deck space, her strong point

Thanks to an ergonomic windows system, the cockpit of this sportfly entirely opens onto the salon. There, we immediately came to appreciate the change brought about by this new model: a rather generous supply of natural light thanks to the side windows and the windscreen. Another advantage of this design is the almost 360-degree view! We noticed this quickly as we sat on the L-shaped sofa in the living area at the entrance. There six seats comfortably, or eight with two additional armchairs. The view is just as generous from the dining area for eight. To ensure as much light as possible, the main wheelhouse, whose steering console boasts a successful modern design, is part of the decoration and perfectly blends in. Three seats with armrests complete the picture.

Four guest cabins

This Superfast boasts a spacious main deck, thanks in part to the fact that the galley is located belowdecks, at the bottom of the staircase leading there. A good chef would not disregard its professional and complete equipment… In addition to this “culinary” place, this deck also welcomes the sleeping accommodations, starting with the 35 m2 amidships master suite, where each space was cleverly thought-out. The “royal” bed, located against the planking features a desk on starboard and a hair and make-up area on port. Between the headboard and the engine room, a full beam bathroom with two washbasins and a separate shower, plus a true dressing room. There are also two twins and one double cabin, plus two crew cabins (three berths). The AB 100 Superfast can be considered as one of the most successful of all the new sportfly and if her 60 knots are confirmed, she will be a resounding success.

AB Yachts prove that speed does matter

The ab 100 is a remarkable vessel, and its big brother, the ab 120, is expected to be even more outrageous ….

Image for article AB Yachts prove that speed does matter

You should not be able to drink champagne while hurtling through the water at 50 knots. It just shouldn’t be possible. But somehow, the engineers and designers at AB Yachts have managed to create a luxury 100-foot superyacht that can reach speeds of nearly 70 mph. The company behind AB Yachts - Next Yacht Group, describe the brand as ‘pure adrenaline' and believes it to be a new undisputed benchmark for the market. And if the AB100 is anything to go by, they might just be right.

The key to the AB 100’s performance can be found in both its design and construction technique - it is built in GRP with carbon fibre reinforcements combined with systems deriving from the aerospace industry. The Superfast version is powered by 3 MTU engines of 2,600 horsepower each coupled with 2 steerable MJP waterjets and a central booster jet. Underway the yacht feels solid, safe and stable in the water, even when accelerating up to almost 60 knots. What’s more, is that the vessel is able to do this with very minimal noise, almost no vibration and outstanding manoeuvrability - the AB 100 is fitted with a single joystick to enable finger-touch control.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by AB Yachts Official (@abyachts)

The waterjet setup, combined with a unique and highly engineered hull, provides a wide range of speeds with remarkable efficiency performance. At a cruising speed of 51 knots, the litre/NM fuel consumption is almost the same as it is at 25 knots - in fact, it utilises 1 litre less, even though the boat is running twice as fast. Stability and comfort both underway and at anchor are further enhanced by a seakeeper gyro stabilizer which provides an 85% reduction in roll, which optimises the cruising experience in most seas. The draft of 1.3m allows the yacht to cruise in the shallow waters of popular locations such as Florida and the Bahamas.

While the yacht is incredibly economical and efficient, that shouldn’t distract from the fact that it is almost unapologetically high performance. If this yacht could be compared to any other feat of engineering, it would have to be the Mclaren P1, a £1 million-plus hypercar that utilises hybrid technology for the sole purpose of filling in the gaps when the petrol engine isn’t working at its best, like gear changes or when the turbocharger is spooling up. This yacht might not have the flair and legacy that some of its nearby competitors may have, but there is without a doubt that there is nothing else on the market that can offer you such an equal degree of adrenaline and comfort.

ab 100 yacht

With an LOA of 30.5m and a maximum beam of 6.8m, distinctive in its sporty exteriors lines, the AB 100 comes in various layouts on what the clients wish is. The ability to have so much freedom in the customisation phase of purchasing the yacht is a massive bonus for the clients of the shipyard. However, the company recently admitted the sanctions against UHNW Russians have had a negative impact on the business, with Gennaro Candida De Matteo, the CEO of Next Yacht Group, suggesting that the impact of the Russian sanctions has had a bigger impact on the yacht building industry than what is currently being broadcasted, “I smile when I see such a small figure like three per cent, the Russian market is enormous, especially so in the 40 to 50-meter range.”

Genarro explained that even his own brand, AB Yachts, has been affected by the sanctions on Russia. “We are of course now waiting to see what will happen with the situation in Russia…The AB Yachts brand is very popular with Russian clients because it is incredibly fast and it looks fantastic.”

ab 100 yacht

The first hull of the AB 120 Beach yacht series has been sold to an American client and is expected to be launched later this year. This new model will be 36m in length and will feature a multi-purpose stern area that can be extended to 50 square meters with foldable terraces. There will also be a double garage for a tender and toys as well as a cinema area on the flybridge.

What makes AB yachts so special is the fact that they are so obdurate and candid compared with some of their competitors. The yachts that they have built do of course have their limitations when it comes to things like range and space onboard, but they are also fully aware that their target audience has very little interest when it comes to the non-sexy specifications. The launch of the AB120 later this year is sure to cement their brand as a refreshingly innovative and exciting faction of the superyacht market.

Ultra-Fast AB 100 Yacht Smashes The 50 Knots Barrier

  • July 13, 2016

Italian shipyard AB Yachts is getting ready to unveil the superfast AB100 yacht at the Cannes Yacht Show in September. Dubbed Spectre, the boat is constructed entirely in kevlar and carbon fiber. Her stylish naval architecture and design were completed in-house by AB Yachts. Capable of reaching speeds equivalent to 61 miles per hour on the water, the 3 MAN engines (each pushing 1900hp), coupled with three MJP waterjets allow her to hit a maximum speed of 52 knots. This puts AB 100 in the list of the world’s fastest superyachts.

The naval architecture of the AB 100 yacht has been developed to deliver a family feeling to its sporty appearance. Her hull is painted in two different tones of metallic silver to accentuate the aggressive lines. Her outside area includes a large flybridge, a wide stern cockpit and a bow cockpit which coprises an L-shaped sofa and two sunbeds for guests. The foredeck of the first AB 100 hull is fitted with two coffee tables, a u-shaped sofa and a comfy sunbed. The exterior spaces are designed to enhance life on board. Equipped with a spacious garage for 30 metres which transforms into a charming beach house, this is an idyllic boat which also provides enviable comfort inside.

The size of 30 metres allows for ample space across the interior for dining and relaxing, with large lateral windows on the main deck to flood living spaces with light. The lower deck of the AB 100 is spacious enough for up to 8 guests in a full-beam owner’s suite, a VIP stateroom and two double cabins, all with en suite bathrooms. The yacht can also accommodate up to 4 crew members in two twin cabins.

The main deck saloon, furnished mainly in light grey tones, is divided into two spacious living spaces, one is for relaxing, the other is a formal dining area with a marble table for 8 people. A retractable 75” TV separates the wheelhouse from the relaxation area.

Update Schleifähre : 100.000 Euro für den Rückkauf der alten Fähre

Jill Grigoleit

 ·  18.09.2024

Schleifähre „Missunde III“: Pächter will an Bord bleiben
