Atlantic Yacht for Charter

From €110,000

Key specifications

  • Length 64.4m (211ft)
  • Builder Graafship

The ATLANTIC sailing yacht blends modern capabilities and classic lines to transport you back to Edwardian sophistication but with a few contemporary twists.

A faithful rebuild of the 1903 William Gardner-designed schooner, ATLANTIC has meticulously mirrored the racing lines of her namesake and boasts an updated interior perfect for a luxury charter.

The original ATLANTIC yacht was one of the most iconic sailing yachts in the world. She broke the record for the fastest crossing from New York to Cornwall, clocking up 341 miles in 24 hours and reaching a top speed of 14,1 knots. ATLANTIC held onto the mono-hull record until 1998

The replica is designed to share her speedy potential, and during a recent trans-Pacific voyage, she reached an average of 15 knots on several days.

The new ATLANTIC is a faithful reproduction that extends the legacy of the original, which managed to break loose from her moorings and sail back to see without a single person on board. She ended up being broken up in the early 1980s.

Interior Design & Engineering

One of the updates to the ATLANTIC yacht is her light-filled interior. The addition of skylights breaks up her expansive teak deck and illuminates her main deck.

You can dine in style in the classic dining room or sit around the long table in the period-style room for a more formal Edwardian experience. Push aside the thick drapes, and you’ll find yourself in the main salon of this luxury superyacht, where you can lounge on the L-shaped red velvet sofa as you enjoy an evening game and a nightcap.

Twelve guests can be accommodated during an ATLANTIC yacht charter, sleeping across a grand master, two double cabins, and three twins.

Yacht Facilities & Entertainment

It’s clear to see the racing prowess of the ATLANTIC yacht when you’re standing on her deck. You can take in the ocean views while reclining on the sunpads, soak up the sun from a deck chair, or enjoy an al fresco meal around the table.

Toys & Crew

A crew of 11 will oversee your ATLANTIC yacht charter.

When you want to head ashore or explore the coastline, you have two choices: hop in the RIB to race across the waves or explore under your own steam with her 12ft sailing dinghy.

If you want to maximise your fun on the water, you can go on the water skis and bumper rings or rent toys like Jet Skis.

  • Six beautifully designed cabins
  • The ultimate classic sailing experience
  • Proven world-girdler. Fast, safe and comfortable
  • Passionate and experienced Captain and Crew
  • Transatlantic range

History of the Schooner Atlantic, circa 1903.

Commissioned by New York Yacht Club member Wilson Marshall , Atlantic was built at the Townsend & Downey shipyard, Shooters Island, New York and launched on the 28 th of July 1903. She was designed by William Gardner , one of America's foremost designers of large yachts.

William Gardner

From the moment Atlantic went to sea, it was clear that she was an exceptionally fast and beautiful schooner. When a yacht in 1903 hits twenty knots during her sea trials, she is a promising yacht, but even then nobody could imagine two years later this yacht would set a record that would stand unmatched for almost a century.

Wilson Marshall

Nevertheless, whilst Wilson Marshall wanted Atlantic to be the fastest schooner on the water, he felt there was no reason to compromise on comfort. Unlike contemporary racing schooners, Atlantic was equipped with every imaginable luxury. Fitted out with the finest mahogany panelling, she had two steam driven generators to power electric lights, refrigerators and a large galley. On deck her halyard winches and primary sheet winches were also steam driven. She had two double and three single staterooms, a lobby, a large full beam saloon, a dining room, a chart & gunroom, three large bathrooms and in the deckhouse there was a comfortable observation room. She had retractable chimneys, so while under sail the below deck steam heating, lighting and refrigeration systems could keep running. Atlantic's fo'c'sle accommodated her thirty-nine strong crew and officers, who would live aboard throughout the year.

Kaiser Wilhelm II

During her first season Atlantic proved fast, winning both the Brenton Reef and the Cape May Cup hands down, but it was only in 1905 she made the headlines by winning the Kaiser's Cup , a Transatlantic race from Sandy Hook to the Lizard. Referred to as " The last Great race of Princes " the entries for this race included all the yachts that the rich and powerful from Britain and America could send to sea.

Captain Charles "Wee Charlie" Barr

The legendary Captain Charlie Barr , who had already successfully defended the America's Cup three times, was hired to skipper Atlantic. Charlie Barr's determination to win was as legendary as his skills for driving the largest of yachts to the very limit. And win, he did, sailing 3006 miles in 12 days, 4 hours, 1 minute and 19 seconds. Atlantic's 24-hour record was 341 miles, an average speed of 14,1 knots. Uncountable attempts were made to break this record but it would hold firm until 1998, the longest standing speed record in the history of yachting.

Cornelius Vanderbilt III

Atlantic's story continued for another seventy-seven years with ownership passing through the likes of Cornelius Vanderbilt III and Gerald Lambert . She was used as a mother ship for other racing yachts like Vanity, for America's Cup defenders and the J-Class Yankee on her voyage to England. Her guest book included the rich and famous of the world. Simply put, she is the most famous and beloved racing schooner of all time.

Although after World War II Atlantic would never sail again, she refused to give up her existence. Somehow she was saved from the scrap yard on three different occasions, broke loose from her moorings, to sail back to sea without a man aboard and ended up used as a houseboat, a restaurant and a floating dock at a fuel station.

Finally on 30 th of January 1982, she was broken up at Newport News Boat Harbor, Virginia.

A bystander looks on as the Schooner Atlantic is scrapped...

What’s the right yacht for an Atlantic crossing? The one you’ve got now

  • Elaine Bunting
  • May 20, 2015

What sort of yacht do you need to sail across the Atlantic? There’s no black art, says Elaine Bunting, you just need a bit of preparation

atlantic yacht proprietario

Numerically, the most common yachts for sailing across the Atlantic are ordinary production cruisers with standard kit, usually with upgrades of safety and power generation equipment. The happy truth is there’s no black art to sailing 3,000 miles downwind; the toughest part can be getting across the Bay of Biscay.

So whatever boat you have right now, the chances are that she’ll be fine for an Atlantic crossing with a bit of extra preparation. You don’t have to let waiting for the ‘right’ boat put you off going.

However, this doesn’t apply so much if you intend to complete an Atlantic circuit and sail from the Caribbean to Europe . The return route can be very tough, with a real chance of rough windward work, and a yacht that is wonderfully comfortable and spacious at anchor can slam and be very uncomfortable on the way back. Shipping back or delivery are both alternative options.

I’ve found that skippers tend to focus on equipment that adds comfort, but also complication: watermakers, generators, comms equipment. All are undoubtedly useful, but remember that every additional item adds complication, spares and service cost/time.

_MG_1486

Apart from a sound boat, all you really need is water, food, fuel and a (paper) chart of ‘North Atlantic, Southern Part’.

Whatever else you do, don’t let those extras distract you from ensuring the integrity of the rig (including the boom and gooseneck fittings), rudder and hull. These are paramount. Rudders, in particular, are subjected to very high side loads in big following seas. I’ve seen people about to set off across the Atlantic on boats that were sporting the latest luxury kit, from ice cream makers to air conditioning, but with split pins not bent back or a clevis pin working out.

What sails are best?

The simple answer is reasonably recent, quality sails that aren’t liable to break. However expensive, good sails are worth every penny. As to what combination is best on a long downwind passage, that’s a complicated and potentially long-winded debate. Let’s just say that, for the average family crew, a smart crossing is all about consistent speed, 24 hours a day. The key is not to have downtime.

_MG_5647

There is absolutely no need to sail hot angles downwind unless you are sailing to polars on a high-performance design. A spinnaker or code sail is great in lighter winds, but in stronger winds you will need several crew on watch at a time and if you blow the sail in a squall or a sudden reload it will be a costly choice.

There is nothing wrong with the old ‘barn doors’ arrangement of mainsail and poled-out genoa. Sure, it’s unflashy and unheroic, but it’s also easy, trouble-free and you’ll trot along in any conditions with minimal drop in speed for the occasional gybe. Just keep an eye out for chafe and be sure to set up a preventer on the boom and a foreguy topping lift and downhaul when poling out the headsail, so you can furl in quickly when that night-time squall hits (which it will).

Power planning

However much power you expect to use on an ocean crossing, you will need more. Nav lights, radar, radio scheds, autopilot, watermaker, fridge, freezer, computer, fans – you name it, they all add up. Last year, when we carried out our annual survey of ARC skippers , we found that yachts of between 46ft and 55ft had a battery capacity, on average, of 700ah, rising to 1,000ah for yachts over 56ft.

Since the design life for marine batteries is five years, it makes sense to set off with new batteries – it’s easier and may be cheaper than replacing them later. A majority of people in our survey had an extra house or domestic battery bank and one or two had boosted the battery used for their windlass.

Interestingly, when we asked about the power equation again in our follow-up survey a few months later , numerous skippers said that they had increased battery capacity yet again or planned to do so in future.

A water generator could be a useful addition

A water generator could be a useful addition

Rather than adding to machinery with a diesel generator, it’s worth looking at wind generators, solar panels and the Watt & Sea or Sea-Gen water turbines . These alternative power generation sources have advanced a lot in recent years. A larger alternator may be worth fitting too, and if only one is fitted to the engine, carry a spare.

Be prepared for gear failure

Be prepared for key equipment to fail because sooner or later it probably will. If it’s gear you normally rely on, like an autopilot or watermaker, have a contingency or a workable plan to do without. Of all the gear problems that give most stress and trouble, the most pressing is autopilot failure. That will start to put a small crew under strain by robbing everyone of rest time.

For the same reason, it’s a good idea to make sure most or all of your crew are decent helmsmen downwind in following seas. If not, spend some time on passage tutoring them.
