Concordia Yawls; American classic, built in Germany

What started out as a one-off design has turned into the fleet of Concordia Yawls, one of the most successful cruisers ever built.

The Concordia Yawls were never made to fit any racing rules. They were made to fit the ocean.” So said Waldo Holland, who contributed to the famous 1938 design by Ray Hunt.

The 39ft (11.9m) and 41ft (12.5m) Concordias, first built 76 years ago in 1938, have cruised and raced themselves into the imagination and emotions of their owners to remain the biggest one-design of large boats in the world, with all but one of the 103 boats still in existence. The curvaceous spoon bow, sweet sheer on a slim hull accentuated by a midships tumblehome, yawl rig and sexy counter stern have led many good sailors to succumb to the Concordia charm over the years. The 75th anniversary last year included celebrations at Concordia Company’s home in Massachusetts plus a well-attended symposium on them and regatta at Castine, Maine. “There’s something in the soul of these yachts,” says Jon Wilson, founder of WoodenBoat magazine. He should know: for the last 31 years, Jon has owned Free Spirit, the Concordia 33 that was the first design in the process that led to the Concordia Yawl. Of the 103 yawls built, five have been in the same family since they were built and 24 have been owned for more than 25 years.

Concordias have cruised the Atlantic, the Pacific and the Arctic and can be found in the USA on both coasts, plus the Great Lakes. They are also in Europe: Fleetwood is based in Kiel, Germany, and Hero has recently arrived nearby. Live Yankee is being restored in England by Peter Rolt, to be based in Dartmouth where Waldo Howland was stationed in World War Two.

Concordia Yawls have won the Newport Bermuda Race twice (1954 and 1978), the Maryland-based Annapolis Race, Cowes Week (Harrier in 1955 was first in each race and overall), the Marblehead to Halifax Race (1955 and 1997) and many others, racing under CCA, IOR and IMC ratings. “They were half the size of the winning Cruising Club of America (CCA) boats and were looked upon as pesky nuisances that kept showing up too early at the finishing line,” said Elizabeth Meyer.

It’s true that no one rule was followed in the Concordia design, though Ray Hunt looked at the rules he found useful. Good racing is just a by-product of good design, according to Waldo Howland. “Yes, they are fast, and fast in a lot of different conditions, but that’s because they are a wholesome, seaworthy design and just a good little boat. I claim it’s much like a good apple pie: you can’t improve on it.” Yet if today’s designer looked at the Concordia’s displacement/length ratio or the low-aspect sailplan, the Concordia might be considered a dog.

Misty is a classic 39-foot Concordia yawl, #66, built at the Abeking and Rasmussen Yard in Bremen Germany in 1959. She was owned by a family on the Great Lakes for her first 45 years. During that time, she won the Chicago-Mackinaw Race, and her racing equipment reflects a commitment to boat speed and ease of handling. She was kept in showroom condition at the Palmer Johnson Yacht Yard. In 2006 Misty returned to New England and received an update including new 3JH 4E Yanmar diesel engine, new plumbing, electronics, standing rigging and sails, at the Concordia Yard, and at Strouts Point Wharf, in Freeport, Maine. In 2010, a new rudder and rudder heel fitting was fabricated at Strouts Point Wharf. Paint and Varnish have been professionally applied every year. Garboard Planks have been replaced, and sister frames have been placed as necessary, as well as new sails and rigging as needed. Misty has raced regularly in the Eggemoggin Reach Regatta, and performs beautifully with her inventory of racing sails. Misty’s current owner, her third owner, has long experience in the care and management wooden sailboats. The boat remains in nearly original form, in great structural and cosmetic condition.

Misty is a "sailor's Concordia", and as outlined below, the two  previous owners appreciated her and gave her excellent care.  Her third and only other owner is an especially competent yachts woman, and this is her second Concordia yawl.  Recently repowered and updated, and with a large sail inventory, Misty has had loving, knowledgeable care, and is highly recommended.

Misty, a classic 39-foot Concordia yawl, #66 (of 99 Concordias built at Abeking and Rasmussen) was shipped from Bremen, Germany in 1959, and immediately left New Bedford for Chicago via the Erie Canal with the owners, the MacIntosh family. She remained on the Great Lakes for 45 years in the care of the same family. During that time, she competed in distance racing, and even won the Chicago-Mackinaw Race in the early 80s. Her racing equipment reflects their commitment to boat speed and ease of handling. She was kept in showroom condition at the Palmer Johnson Yacht Yard. 

In 2006 Misty returned to New England and received a major update including new Yanmar engine, plumbing, electronics, and new standing rigging, at the Concordia Yard, and at Strouts Point Wharf in Freeport Maine. 

Fresh Paint and Varnish have been professionally applied every year. Garboard Planks have been replaced, and sister frames have been placed as necessary. In 2010 she received a new rudder and rudder heel fitting, both fabricated at Strouts Point Wharf. 

For the last ten years, she has appeared regularly at the WoodenBoat School, Maine, as an exemplar Concordia classroom, teaching adults in “the Craft of Sail,” and the fine points of sailing a traditional yawl. She has also raced regularly in the famous Eggemoggin Reach Regatta. Misty’s current owner is long experienced in the care and management wooden sailboats; she has moved on to a larger boat in the Mediterranean.

Typical Concordia construction with tight seam African mahogany planking bronze screw fastened to steam bent oak frames and sisters.  Oak backbone and floors. Iron ballast keel. Painted canvas over mahogany deck with mahogany deck structures and locust trim. Iron ballast. Keel hung rudder ant heel fitting recently replaced.  Misty is painted with Epifanes #27 grey enamel topsides paint with goldleaf cove stripe, white boot top and red bottom.

Misty has the standard Concordia layout with rode stowage right forward followed by stowage under 2 pipe berths with head next aft to port and hanging locker opposite.  The head is fitted with WC (Y-valve to holding tank), SS sink with manual fresh water, and stowage.  The main cabin centers around the drop leaf locust table with settees port and starboard fitted with drop down Concordia backrests/berths. Cast iron Concordia stove is forward.  The galley is aft  with  SS sink (manual fresh water) and SS  lined ice box to port and two burner non pressurized Origo cook top to starboard.  There is ample and cleverly designed stowage, and finish below is varnished raised paneled bulkheads with locust trim, withe paint and bare teak cabin sole. Ample ventilation is provided with two opening  hatches, the companionway, opening ports, and ventilators with screens for portholes and hatches

No formal hour log was kept with last engine installed. With lack of use since 2012, due to family concerns, current owner estimates "approximately" 50 hours or so. The engine is cooled with a fresh-water heat exchanger.

Construction

The hull is mahogany planking (1 3/4") on oak frames. She has a clipper bow/entry and countered transom. The construction method is plank on frame. Frames are oak 1 3/8" x 1 1/2" on 9 1/2" centers. She has a full keel, with cutaway forefoot, with bulbous iron ballast. Her stem is solid timber and underbody is painted blue. The hull to deck joint type and fastenings are shelf and clamp. Sheer clamp 1 3/4" x 2 3/4", shelf 1 3/4" x 4". BRONZE knees. Fastenings are bronze rivets and screws. Keel bolts are stainless steel 7/8" to 1" diameter. Her bulkhead is paneled marine plywood and ceiling is 2" wide mahogany butted panels about the built-in berths and cabinetry throughout the interior.

Upgraded to spectra, added the adjustable back stay & running backs. New Lifelines. • In 2003: 1. New holding tank and macerator were installed 2. Horn timber was repaired 3. Accommodation

Most forward is an open chain and rode locker with access from the forepeak compartment. Next there is an open area and sail storage area, then two fold-down pipe berths with storage compartments beneath and tankage. There is a foredeck hatch escape hatch, with step from this area. The main mast penetrates this compartment, with good access to the mast step beneath the cabin sole. Moving aft to port is the toilet compartment with vanity and sink, and marine toilet. Across, to starboard is a hanging locker. Then you enter the salon with settee and fold down pipe berths on each side, tankage beneath and storage outboard. Overhead there is a large butterfly hatch. Moving aft, the galley / navigation station encompasses the area. The sink and icebox aft are to port with storage outboard. The propane stove, a Force 10 2-burner with oven, and storage area are to starboard. The companionway ladder is amidships and there is good access to the engine with the ladder and engine cover removed. There is good access to the bilge, keel bolts, bilge pumps, and bilge sump beneath the sole hatches. There is good headroom throughout. Sleeps 4. The cabin heater is a wood-fired cast iron stove. The interior is finished bright throughout.

This classic 1953 39’ Concordia yawl was designed by the famous C. Raymond Hunt and meticulously built by Abeking & Rasmussen in Germany. Her design is balanced to sail in all types of conditions and sets the standard for comfortable cruising on a stellar vessel. As you admire her exterior and design, she just appears to be a good all-around vessel, not too deep a draft with a rather full bow and narrow stern. She's very symmetrical and carries the legacy of being seaworthy, comfortable and versatile. Concordia yawls have proven themselves in winning some of the most challenging offshore races.

She's in need of some TLC to bring her back to her original luster, since the current owner has not been able to dedicate the time over the last few years to provide the usual care that he has lavished on her due to family concerns, so she’s in need of some painting, brightwork, minor repairs and cleaning.

There were 103 Concordias produced between 1938 and 1966, making the Concordia yawl class the largest class of large one-design wooden sailboats.

The Concordia 39 is a sought-after classic cruising and racing yacht enjoyed and appreciated by generations of sailors.
