66m offshore vessel Project UFO no longer undergoing conversion at Lürssen
The 66-metre offshore rescue vessel Project UFO, also known as Ocean Falcon , will no longer undergo its conversion at Lürssen . The vessel arrived at the shipyard's facilities in Bremen, Germany in September 2022, where she was set to receive a four-metre extension and be converted into an explorer yacht for charter .
"The combined UFO-Lürssen teams have been diligently revising and evaluating the feasibility of the conversion of the Offshore and Rescue vessel Ocean Falcon as initially designed," read a statement from Lürssen. "After a thorough review, the Lürssen engineering team identified a number of challenges that make it difficult to fully meet the expectations of all parties involved. Therefore, the project decided to leave the Lürssen shipyard."
This is the second shipyard that has accepted but ultimately not gone through with Project UFO's conversion. The first was Icon Yachts , who announced its plans to take on the rebuild at the 2022 Monaco Yacht Show .
Original plans for the conversion project indicated a high-volume interior with room for four tenders, a submarine, a 10-metre swimming pool and two fully certified helicopter landing pads with an accompanying helicopter hanger. In addition, guests would have access to an expedition preparation room and a separate diving centre.
Alberto Perrone, director of yacht services at Lürssen had previously stated: "UFO is not a yacht in the traditional sense, but neither is it an explorer or support vessel. The best way to describe this new type of vessel is as a 'Pick-Up Truck' on the water. We are well-positioned for such a conversion – the outstanding engineering capabilities of Lürssen and our experience is of great benefit for the project."
Prior to this development, the shipyard had added: "Much of the existing structure, hull and systems are to be retained – so the vessel will stay true to her commercial look but function like a yacht."
It is unknown whether the conversion will continue at another shipyard.

Featuring exterior design by Murray & Associates, UFO takes cues from Icon’s conversion yacht Project Master that it penned in partnership with world-famous naval architect Espen Øino. The original vessel will be lengthened from 217 feet to 230 feet and will subsequently offer a generous interior volume of 3,000 GT. According to Icon, UFO will be one of the largest explorer yachts in its class once complete.
Onboard, a new superstructure will be added to create more expansive (and luxurious) living quarters. The interior, courtesy of H2 Yacht Design, will feature two primary suites that open out to each side and three convertible VIPs that can be turned into six staterooms when needed. All up, UFO will be able to accomodate 12 guests for charter and 18 during private cruising.
As for amenities, UFO will be fitted with a large outdoor pool, a gym, a spa, a 12-seater Jacuzzi, a beach club, a sizable swim platform, a dive center and an expedition preparation room in which you can plan voyages. The yacht will also be equipped with two fully-certified helicopter landing pads and a hangar that is able to house an EC145 chopper and a submarine. Other vessels on deck include a sportfisher, a 39-foot tender, a 29-foot landing craft, a wakeboard tender and a rescue tender, plus a full fleet of water toys.

Conversions
Join us and become part of the journey.
Once an Owner embarks on a conversion project with ICON, he/she becomes part of a very unique league. It opens up a new and exciting chapter in the life of a world-class vessel and provides lasting enjoyment and memories for the owner and guests for decades to come.
Compared with a new build, a conversion project can be turned around swiftly. It saves time in the engineering phase, and the typical long-lead times for plant and machinery items no longer influence the build period. It means that you and your guests can begin exploring the world’s oceans far sooner. In less than three years after kick-off.
Make a wise investment
Finding the right platform vessel, one that is already built to a high standard, and usually certified for entering the Polar Regions, is a vital step along the journey. ICON has a list of suitable vessels for successful conversions.
“Carbon friendly”
At ICON we think of our precious planet. Since 2021 we only use 100% green energy. We recycle. We are ISO 14001 certified – being the first Dutch shipyard to have achieved this. Owners of conversions completed by ICON reduce building- carbon footprints in comparison with newbuilds with their considerable aggregations of non- reusables.
An efficient process
Together with the involvement of the Owner’s design team, our technical engineers and naval architects steer towards retaining as much of the existing platform as possible, bringing financial efficiencies to your conversion project.
Reach remote locations and explore the world
We completely upgrade and change interiors to luxury standards and carefully extend exterior spaces to match the overall guest experience. Technical solutions allow us to deliver a truly luxurious superyacht with an incredible range and the ability to explore the most remote areas of the world’s oceans.
