I am considdering moving up from my humble pandora to a larger yacht "a trip with sailing hollidays around corfu has spoiled me with the comforts of a larger boat" at the moment there are two posibilities in the frame 1 a jaguar 28 delux and 2 a mirage 28, have any fourumites any experiences or recomendations and any tips. also could anyone clear up for me the vat status for say a 1981 boat ? do i need a paper trail or proof for a boat this age. thanks in advance /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

You need not worry about VAT. But tell us why you are attracted to a Jaguar 28 ? I found it a very light boat in a sea state moderate and above, or F4 and above. Bounced around like a ping pong ball. Great for Greece, but no sure about the UK.

thanks for your response cliff but i do mean the 28, see here http://www.hastie.org.uk/jaguar/page51.html
I see what you mean its around 1/2 tonne lighter than the mirage and around a tonne lighter than the cobra 850 thanks also for your response
[ QUOTE ] You need not worry about VAT. [/ QUOTE ] I disagree with this. It is necessary to be able to show the VAT status of a vessel built post 1973. Having just pulled out of the purchase of a J27 for this reason, I had done some investigation. You either need the original sales document showing the VAT paid, or for a vessel built prior to 1985, you need proof of age and a proof that the vessel was in European waters during 1993.
Moonshining
Could you provide a link or other confirmation of that requirement?
From the HMRC website Documents for proof of VAT status
OK, so a marine survey or similar. Not too onerous then. Thanks!

Rig and Sails
Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.
The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort Ratio
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening Formula
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
Based on the CATALINA 27 hull design?. Available with standard fin, shallow draft fin (by P. Milne), or twin/bilge keels.

The Jaguar 28 is equipped with a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel. The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.45 - 1.55 meter (4.76 - 5.06 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.
Feb 19, 2002 · delivered bildge keel version back from solent area to north west, over 500 miles passage. not that impressed,it had 20hp engine which was godsend, and a folding 3 blade prop, sailing perfomence was average, i believe this boat is based on the jaguar 28 and with the asking price of £28500 for this second hand 28 ft yacht
Sep 24, 2003 · A modern looking boat compared to some of the designs of the late 70's/early 80's, conventional build and therefore easy to work on. Based on the American Catalina 25 she has a spacious cockpit and wide, easy access, hatchway. As a first boat I think they are ideal as you get a lot of boat for the money.

A boat with a BN of 1.6 or greater is a boat that will be reefed often in offshore cruising. Derek Harvey, “Multihulls for Cruising and Racing”, International Marine, Camden, Maine, 1991, states that a BN of 1 is generally accepted as the dividing line between so-called slow and fast multihulls.
