Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Bluewater Sailboat – Island Packet 44

Before you even leave the slip and start sailing, you’ll notice how very solidly built Island Packet 44 yacht is. She is a Bluewater Sailboat, incredibly simple and secure to sail because almost everything can be done from the cockpit. Her enormous cockpit is wonderful for safety in rough seas off the coast, suitable for staff and a number of guests, and enough long for those leisurely sailing days when you just want to relax and take a sleep while your friends run the boat. Her decks are spacious and simple to navigate as you move forward.

IP44 maintains the traditions of excellent construction, top-of-the-line equipment and systems, and plenty of room for all the tasks and projects you may want to enjoy while aboard in their extensive and diverse line of yachts.

Including their full keel solid hand laid construction, complete encapsulated keel ballast, shielded prop and rudder, true cutter rig for easy sail handling, high bulwarks, and a safe anchoring platform, IP has stayed faithful to the design characteristics required for a cruising sailboat.

The new Bluewater Sailboat Island Packet 44, created by Bob Johnson, fits the definition of a full-keel vessel. Between the forefoot and the leading edge of the keel, there is hardly any definition. As far as is reasonably possible, the keel tip is carried aft. Shoal draught, which is 4 feet 7 inches with a centerboard, and deep draught, which measures 5 feet 7 inches, are the two available draught sizes. You have plenty lateral plane either way. The keel blends into the profile, but the middle reveals a very tight tuck or radius where the keel and hull converge. By dividing the keel thickness by the chord length, you may calculate the long keel’s thickness ratio and find that it is rather low.

The majority of racing fin-keelers have thickness ratios of at least 8% to 9%.

The canoe body itself is quite light, as seen by the design’s moderate 243 D/L ratio. A keel with a 6,400-pound displacement results from assuming an average keel thickness of one foot, a keel span of 3.33 feet, and an average chord length of 30 feet. The remaining structure is a 44-foot hull that weighs less than 22,000 pounds. That hull might be slick. The Island Packet 44’s long waterline will make her a freight train when sheets are loosened, even if she is not as close-winded as the newest fin-keelers.

With twin lounge seats to port and L-shaped seating to starboard, the main salon is roomy and adaptable. The salon table flips down to provide you with a tonne of space when you need it for entertaining. Her galley is the best in her size range and perfect for preparing fine meals. Her nav station, which is enormous and now almost extinct, is a perfect place for a home office and has space for a tonne of electronics as well as genuine charts. She features two spacious staterooms, one with a head in each. The rear head also serves as the day head. Through multiple deck hatches and opening ports, there is a tonne of natural light (everything opens).

Almost everything you could possibly need for a round-the-world voyage is on board this yacht.

This Bluewater sailboat is ideal for the Bahamas because of its small 5’7″ draught. As you are aware, Island Packet constructs incredible boats without ever compromising their fundamental design tenets, which include a sturdy lay placed solid fibreglass hull. A fibreglass component is used in the interior construction, and she is fastened to a structural gridwork made of floor timbers and bulkheads. The triaxial roving and glass matt work in fibreglass are of the highest calibre. Modern core material that doesn’t decay is employed in the deck as part of the IP-exclusive PolyCore technology. The gelcoat and stainless steel craftsmanship are unmatched. The boat is exceptionally sturdy, and Island Packets often endure many years of use. A powerful boat has a certain level of comfort! A superb combination is comfort and construction quality. Due to the regulated sail plan and everything being on furlers, you’ll spend most of your time in the cockpit. The cockpit is spacious enough for visitors and very comfortable. accompanied by the stunning dodger and bimini.

Classic IP lines, a strong rig, a large cockpit, simple deck mobility, strategically arranged rigging of the highest calibre, and numerous opening ports. Even before you board, it will be clear that this sailboat is designed for long voyages.

Gates on either side, close to the front of the cockpit, are used for boarding. There is enough of space in the nearly 8-foot-long cockpit for a large crew or topside relaxation. For handling, furling, lifting, and trimming sails, all lines originate from the rear. You can perform everything with an electric halyard winch, including lifting the main sail, the dinghy or outboard motor, furling the headsails in strong winds, and removing visitors from the sea. If you’ve never had one on a yacht before, you’ll fall in love with her and what she can do instantly.

You can advance to the mast and foredeck via broad side decks. The mast’s additional winches make it easier to hoist the jib and staysail onto the furlers. In order to easily go around the boat in choppy waters, lines are cleverly run around it and out of the way.

To let light and air into the boat, every hatch and port opens. For severe offshore operations, they are all made of top-notch materials.

Now you can also precisely calculate the ratios related to any sailboat to make smart choices based on your budget and sailing needs. Use this bluewater Sailboat Calculator to explore different options and make the best decision.

Island Packet is renowned for its rooms’ roominess, headroom, and storage. It might be the main factor in why people adore Island Packets. It doesn’t get much better for living aboard and travelling in your house! Up to the 1990s, the IP44 was intended to be the most opulent of all the IPs. There are two sizable double staterooms, two sizable shower rooms, a sizable galley, and a large salon. There is sufficient space for a couple to host visitors or family for extended durations in the utmost comfort. The atmosphere is one of openness, illumination, and ventilation. With a headroom of 6’5″, the ship seems incredibly spacious and light. The foldable dining table comfortably seats six people, but she can also be folded and fastened to the bulkhead to create a spacious salon where you can move around without bumping into anyone. The port settee berth converts to a double for guests and is ideal for sea travel. Two chairs and a table make up the port seating configuration, which can also be used as a straight settee seaberth. Storage space is abundant below and to the side of the sofas. The cabinets and bookcases on port and starboard are really excellent. The galley is a very spacious work area! A quiet corner on the port side houses the ship’s office. The owners’ huge aft head, which actually features a bathtub, is accessible only from the owners’ exclusive and comfortable aft cabin.

The owners’ private and cozy aft cabin has its own access to the roomy aft head, which doubles as a huge stall shower with a fold-down teak sofa and really features a bath tub.

Cooking and eating in a beautiful galley is a lovely experience. The cockpit is accessible, there are all the conveniences, there is a tonne of counter space, and there is a tonne of storage. a fantastic “kitchen”. She is simple to enjoy the showers and the kitchen when there is more water than you know what to do with!

Performance

Island Packet has a fantastic method for controlling sails with ease. She is a real cutter with a manageable sailplan that offers a variety of options for all circumstances. The keel-stepped aluminium mast is easily capable of intercoastal travel. To make sailing shorthanded even simpler, the cutter rig has a self-tending staysail on a furler. The sailboat has a sail area to displacement ratio of 19, with a total sail area of 1082 square feet. A 110% high cut furling yankee serves as the headsail. The staysail is a self-tacking, 90% furling sail. The mainsail is a conventional mainsail system with two reef points led aft to the cockpit, five complete battens, and a stunning Doyle stackpack. Raising the mainsail is really simple thanks to one electric winch. Everything functions flawlessly. She sails beautifully, so you’ll be content and at ease while the other boats head for shore. Once more, everything that could be improved in the first year of boat ownership was done without regard for expense. Start with new running rigging, sails, and a sturdy track.

Quick Notes

The bowsprit may possibly be removed from this design without too much difficulty, but a short bowsprit has some advantages. It pushes the rig’s centre of pressure forward and typically produces a boat that is well balanced. Thus, the anchors are removed from the stem. It draws out the sheer line for aesthetic purposes and opens up the foretriangle to enable the efficient usage of a cutter configuration. This sail plan demonstrates the significant space between the headstay and staysail stay, which makes her simpler to pass the headsail through when tacking. The aspect ratio of the staysail is extremely high.

A traditional-looking boat with a large cabintrunk and all opening ports is the Island Packet 44. The sheer looks lovely against the teak cap rail. The iconic Island Packet service will be led by the 44.

2019 Island Packet North Star 44

brand logo

The award-winning North Star 44 offers year round boating comfort, trawler-like livability and motoring performance, simple and versatile sailing and legendary IP quality and value. Among many unique features are the North Star 44’s twin cockpits. One aft, perfect for the morning’s first cup of coffee, plus one forward—just the right place for a group to sit while cruising or at anchor on a beautiful day. Large CE Category A – Ocean rated opening windows in the enclosed deckhouse offer panoramic views, while the center windshield panel hinges upward to allow socializing with family and friends in the forward cockpit.

Control of this vessel is made easy and comfortable with dual swivel helm and companion chairs plus a large console forward of the wheel for engine controls and instrumentation. An optional autopilot gives you the ability to steer the boat from virtually any location aboard with a wireless handheld control. And with the forward chairs and L-shaped settee surrounding the folding table, this is a wonderful spot to have a meal or play a game of cards… regardless of what the weather is doing outside.

A simplified, self-tending roller furling sloop rig has sail controls led to an electric winch in the aft cockpit. A pair of optional StoWinches™ may also be added, allowing the main and jib to be trimmed with push button controls at both the helm and aft cockpit. The North Star 44 features a new hull form, providing increased hull speed and virtually level running under power, even at full throttle. The large fuel tank allows extended range with moderate fuel consumption when the winds die. Naturally, one can also augment powering performance with the sails, increasing speed and/or reducing fuel usage. Exterior teak is used only on several small step surfaces in order to minimize maintenance. The interior is a pleasant combination of designer laminate surfaces and varnished furniture quality hardwood. The deckhouse sole is varnished hardwoods, stateroom areas are fitted with Berber-style oatmeal color marine carpet, and the galley, nav/office and head are molded slip resistant surfaces.

The interior accommodations of the North Star 44 are especially spacious. Below you’ll find the owner’s stateroom forward with a double island berth and two hanging lockers. Just aft and to starboard is a large head and separate stall shower with private access from either side. Aft is a guest stateroom with two single berths, a large hanging locker and an array of storage cabinets. Whether you’re exploring coastal waterways or making extended passages, the award-winning North Star 44 offers all climate comfort with efficient and stable motoring and easily managed sailing.

Thinking Through a Solar Power Installation

We like going one size over what is often recommended for smaller boats. The advantages are a.Less stretch. Nylon can be too stretchy, but polyester not stretchy enough. One size over can be a Goldilocks answer. b.Better wear resistance. Because we like using short chain when hand-hauling, we cover the first 10 feet with a webbing chafe guard. This is very cut resistant, because unlike the rope inside, it is floating and not under tension. c. Better grip. ⅜-in. is pretty hard to grab with the wind is up. ½-in. fits our hands better. The rule now restricts boats to a single hull, but allows retractable, hydraulically actuated foils. Top speeds of 40 knots are common. (Photo/Shutterstock)

Island Packet 440

Light-wind performance aside, the ip 440 is built to go places..

sailboat data island packet 44

Under the direction of designer and CEO Bob Johnson, Island Packet has for nearly 30 years accomplished what few modern boatbuilders have been able to do—produce more than 2,000 boats targeted at liveaboard and passagemaking sailors who plan to spend months, if not years, on their boats. The Island Packet 440, introduced last year, is a good example of how Island Packet accommodates the peculiarities of dyed-in-the-wool cruisers without slowing production to a crawl, sacrificing safety or sensibility, or straying from Johnson’s original concept.

If you don’t share Island Packet devotees’ view that a full-keeled, moderate displacement cutter is the most sensible boat for long-term cruising, or you’re an around-the-buoys racer who can’t live without a lively helm in light air, then settling for an Island Packet will be as easy as switching religions. Sure, over the years, Johnson has tweaked his boats’ underwater shapes (streamlining the keels and rudders to generate more lift, widening the sterns, and sharpening the entries) and the furling staysails set on a self-tacking Hoyt boom (hardly passé), but at its very heart, the 440 is your father’s Oldsmobile—a station wagon at that. It is consistent, reliable, and built for long hauls.

Island Packet 440

Design In profile, the IP 440 is a bit of a mixed breed. It has the traits of a traditional cruising boat: raised cabintop, high freeboard, a light spring in the sheerline, and a short bowsprit that is equipped to handle two working anchors. The stern, however, features a modern reverse transom with an expansive swim platform and stairs. This makes it easier to transfer jerry jugs from a dinghy, adds to waterline length, and helps diminish the slab-sided look that usually accompanies high freeboard.

Below the waterline, the cross-section harkens back to traditional full-keeled cruisers, but the keel is foil-shaped for better lift. The rudder, too, has been given a finer trailing edge.

In plan view, the beam widens fairly quickly at the bow, reaching its maximum—14 feet, 4 inches—midships. The aluminum, double-spreader rig from Charleston Spars features continuous rigging (no intermediates to tune aloft) and twin backstays. The mast is keel-stepped. The outboard chainplates are a rugged design that Island Packet modified about 10 years ago to remedy a potentially serious problem: Water leaks at the deck and collected in fiberglass pockets where parts of the chainplates were concealed, which could promote hidden corrosion.

The IP 440 comes standard with a roller-furling main. The jib is cut higher and leads farther aft than on previous IPs, permitting slightly tighter sheeting angles, but it still chastises those inclined to pinch.

Deck Johnson’s pragmatic design philosophy carries forward to the deck details. In the cockpit, a huge sail locker sits under the starboard settee, allowing access to the shore power system, the steering, and the optional autopilot. Another big locker is accessed under the opposite settee.

All running rigging is led aft to the cockpit. Tending the mainsail or staysail sheets—led to winches at the companionway—requires leaving the helm, not a huge strike for a pure cruiser. There are four well-placed padeyes for the helmsman and crew to clip into. We like the nice, fat, 2-inch-diameter twin cockpit drains. Two cockpit line-storage bins eliminate clutter. The boarding platform has molded seats, and a hot and cold shower.

The divided anchor locker, accessible through a Lewmar deck hatch, drains to the bilge with a shutoff valve.

Accommodations Four people can cruise comfortably for extended periods on this boat, and with 260 gallons of water and 400 cubic feet of storage space, you can probably carry six for short periods without a mutiny.

Island Packet 440

The galley is U-shaped to starboard with a clear view of the saloon and plenty of room for storage, dedicated shelves, and cabinet space to keep mealtime essentials close at hand. The 12-volt fridge/freezer, a Frigoboat keel-cooler design, keeps food cold, but there’s only one lid to access both, allowing precious cold air to escape unnecessarily. The deep double sink, a slide-out trash bin, and two hatches over the galley are nice touches.

The aft stateroom to port has an island berth running diagonally (awkward for sleeping at sea, but the saloon settees will do fine for this) and a separate door to the port head which is also accessible from the main cabin.

The saloon is well lit, and has excellent ventilation through three dorades, eight hatches, and 12 opening ports. The starboard settee pulls out to make a double berth.

The forward cabin is well aft of the bow, making room for an island berth. The L-shaped forward head allows for a separate shower, but puts the vanity sink outboard, requiring you to shut the seacock when the boat is on a starboard tack.

Systems The diesel is a reliable 75 Hp 4JH3TBE turbo-charged Yanmar, with good accessibility. The alternator is a 110 Balmar with a digital controller. All batteries are AGM; the house bank is 400 Ah. A galvanic isolator and Charles Industries 60-amp, 3-stage charger are standard. Pre-tinned copper wiring is well labeled and cleanly routed. Our boat had the optional MAS 8 kW generator and a heavy-duty electric windlass from Lighthouse Marine, also optional.

Mast and all underwater metals are electrically bonded, although the boat does not have a lightning protection system. Tankage is low in the hull below the cabin sole, adding to stability and proper trim. Island Packet recently began building its water and holding tanks out of fiberglass. The fuel tank is high-grade 5052-H32 aluminum.

Performance We sailed the boat on St. Petersburg Bay in St. Petersburg, Fla., with a half load of fuel and water. Winds were about 5-10 knots when we started, increasing to barely 10 knots by afternoon—lousy conditions for a full-bodied cruiser. There was a very light chop. Handling under power was good, given the handicaps of a full keel. It turned in about 1.5 boat lengths, and obeyed steering in reverse soon after starting from a dead stop. Our boat’s optional bow thruster took the challenge out of docking.

At 2500 RPM, we cruised at 6.3 knots and recorded 85 decibels in the galley, 81 in the main salon, and 79 in the cockpit (Normal conversation is about 60 decibels). The aft cabin produced a rather noisy 90 decibels. At 3000 RPM we cruised at 7.1 knots and at 3500, 7.4 knots.

In the light stuff, the rack-and-pinion Lewmar Cobra steering felt a bit stiff, and we managed only about 4 knots in 7 knots apparent wind on a beam reach. The boat tacked through about 105 degrees, and though we could probably sail higher with more wind, the boat clearly at its best full-and-by. It lost steam broad reaching, when the staysail is best furled or used as a steering sail to balance the helm.

Island Packet 440

When the wind picked up to about 10 knots, we managed to hold about 4.2 knots on a beam reach. The boat tracked true for five minutes without tending the helm, one of the great advantages of a full keel. We’d definitely opt for a cruising chute and consider a folding propeller.

Conclusions As much as “performance” cruisers denigrate full-keel boats, they make sense for cruising: They maximize stability with minimum draft, they track well, and they’re forgiving in the event of a grounding.

In terms of construction, systems, and accommodations, the Island Packet 440 sets a very high standard. Where it misses its mark, it misses by inches, not feet. The IP 440 has the essentials to cross an ocean, and we’d not hesitate to take it on a tradewind circumnavigation. Though a conventional mainsail likely would hurt resale, we prefer it for extended cruising. Island-hoppers and coastal cruisers, will, in all probability, be happy with in-mast furling, but we still like the simplicity and better performance of a well-cut cruising main.

Light wind isn’t the IP 440s strong suit, but on a long tradewind passage, it should hold its own with many fin-keel designs of similar length and displacement, and it will almost surely deliver a less strenuous ride.

For $430,000, we’d expect more options (genset, bow thruster, an electric anchor windlass—for a start), but given Island Packet’s cult-like following, the IP 440 should hold its value well.
