I am searching for a Sunfish in the D/FW area and came across a Sailfish in fairly good shape. There is only minimal information or photos available online. I have found that both boats were made by Alcort and that the Sailfish lost it's popularity around the time that production changed from wood to fiberglass. Can anyone help me with a little history and/or personal advice regarding the Sailfish? Although the Sunfish is my first choice, the Sailfish might be a good option. Thanks in advance...Mike
Well once you sail one you'll find out almost immediately why the Sunfish prospered and the Sailfish bit the big one....LOL The Sailfish is the original board boat. It does not have anything resembling a cockpit, just a flat top resembling a surf board. Here's a link with a picture or two of true board boats: http://www.woodenboat-ubb.com/cgi-bin/UBB/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=2&t=003080&p=

Hello Mike, I was just surfing the web for info on how to fix up one of these little buggers and found this bit of trivia - Wood Sailfish 1945 to 1966 Fiberglass Sailfish 1959 to 1975 Wood Sunfish 1952 to 1966 Fiberglass Sunfish 1960 to the present Like Mike4947 said the two boats are worlds apart. For some enlightenment this page might be of interest/ http://home.comcast.net/~sunfish_sailor/sailfish/sailfish.html There's more info if you follow the link. .
Thanks to everyone for the informative replies. You have confirmed by assumption that I should continue on my quest to find that perfect Sunfish! I know that she is sitting somewhere around the Dallas area and will surface soon! Thanks again. this is truly a friendly and helpful site! Mike

Mike, JMHO, but if I were looking for a used Fish I would restrict my search to 1992 or newer boats. That gives you the newer rudder system and larger cockpit. While the rudders were on boats from IIRC 1972 on they do that the smaller cockpit and the first years of the larger cockpit boats were built by Pearson and as I owned one can safely say were built way to light (not enough resin/glass) in the hull. '92 and newer hulls were built by SLI or Vanguard and again JMHO but have better built hulls.

I have a Sailfish sail that is excellent...and I think is the same size as a Sunfish, but i would like someone to confirm that. I will sell it for $50 if anyone is interested.

Well, it may and it may not be. It depends if it were meant for the fiberglass Sailfish, or the smaller of the two sizes of wooden Sailfish.

Nov 5, 2018 · I routinely car-top my Sunfish(es) about 1500 miles. Carried upside-down and backwards, I threaded a 1/16" diameter S/S cable through a 2-foot garden hose section. The bottom end was secured from the center of a chain bridle stretched between two stationary points underneath the truck.

Jul 28, 2019 · Some interesting developments concerning the construction of our beloved Sunfish. But let me first clear up some misconceptions. 1. A really nice 'used' Sunfish (with upgrades) should cost no more than $3500 and more likely around $2500. I am talking about a Vanguard made in the later years (after 2000 and before LP moved the operation out of ...
Sep 1, 2021 · For comparison, This time of year, I see older Sunfish for sale on Craigslist in the $500-$1200 range, depending on the shape they are in. Add to that the cost of a new sail and installing the new style rudder (add $180 for a brand new recreational sail or double that for an official class sail).
Jan 19, 2015 · These were each purchased in Florida, where we have nearly year-round sailing, and Sunfish get a lot of saltwater use. I didn't need to do any fiberglass repair, and each was complete. My first Sunfish was represented by the seller as being a "practice Sunfish", so I only paid $125 for it (and then, two of us couldn't lift it) .
Aug 27, 2014 · There is a larger version of the Sunfish called a Big Fish that can handle several adults. Google "Big Fish" and check it out. I agree that the Force 5 might be ideal (and I have one or sale for $900 here in Central NY near Syracuse, NY). Alan Glos Cazenovia, NY
