What’s better than a round of golf on a beautiful day? With the birds chirping in the trees and the satisfying sound as your club connects with the ball, nothing quite beats it. Unless of course you happen to be teeing off from a luxury superyacht. For golf lovers, there is an increasing number of yachts available for charter which offer the opportunity to practise your swing whilst on board; whether that's perfecting your long game or honing your shot accuracy with inflatable greens, superyachts have risen admirably to the challenge.

What is superyacht golf?

One of the more quirkier activities on top of the multitude of amenities offered on board a superyacht is the ability to tee off from your very own private driving range.  Using either eco-friendly floating golf balls, or fully-biodegradable ones, you’ll be nailing your approach shots in no time.

superyacht with golf course

FunAir; an American company based in Austin, Texas that specialises in inflatable toys for yachts, have recently jumped on the superyacht golf bandwagon with their range of floating golf greens that serve as the perfect in-water targets for practising your aim. FunAir also produces their own branded marine-friendly golf balls made out of fish food, which have been neatly designed to fully dissolve in the water.

Standout superyachts for golf lovers

Whether you want to practise your driving skills or prefer to work on your aim, we’ve rounded up some of the best charter yachts offering their very own onboard golf amenities;

Delivered in 2019, this elegant 93m/305ft yacht bears all the hallmarks of meticulous Feadship craftsmanship, with her exquisite Reymond Langton interiors showcasing the epitome of superyacht luxury.

Golfing Holidays On a Superyacht

superyacht with golf course

Read on to find our top destinations in the Mediterranean and Caribbean for golfing holidays on a superyacht.

So the boss loves golf! Whilst on board, the guests are always looking to get ashore for at least one round of 9 holes, and they love it when you dock in locations that have some of the best golf courses in the world.

With special thanks to West Nautical , we have put together a list of the best Golf Course in the Med and the Caribbean.

The Mediterranean:

French riviera.

superyacht with golf course

The French Riviera boasts some of the finest golf courses in the world. Being such a luxurious and glamourous destination, there will be plenty of other superyachts in the area. The beaches and restaurants the French Riviera offers are exceptional, as are its golf courses.

Golf Club Saint-Tropez was developed by South African golfer Gary Player and his team. While playing, golfers can take in the stunning views of Saint-Tropez harbour and the Pampelonne beaches. With 18-holes and a span of 6045 metres, this course is full of variety: a first-class choice for golf lovers.

La Turbie in Nice is also home to an extraordinary golf club: Monte Carlo Golf Club . The course overlooks the Principality of Monaco, with mountains and sea surrounding the green. This 18-hole course is ideal for highly skilled players because of its rolling terrain.

superyacht with golf course

Mallorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands. Sailing through these waters is a breath-taking experience with magnificent views around every corner. Specifically, this island flaunts crystal clear waters, stunning sunsets and beautiful beaches.

Golf Son Gual is one of the many exquisite golf courses Mallorca has to offer. This par 72 golf course is one of the newest to the island and overlooks spectacular views of the Mediterranean coastline. Consequently, it’s no wonder Golf Son Gual ranks within the top 100 golf courses in Europe.

The Algarve, Portugal

superyacht with golf course

Whether you’re looking for stunning beaches or challenging golf courses, the Algarve is bound to have just what you’re searching for. The Algarve is home to an astounding 31 golf courses.

Monte Rei Resort ranks within the top 20 golf courses in Europe and is the top course in Portugal! This is because of The Jack Nicklaus Signature Course, designed in 2007 by 18-time Major Champion Jack Nicklaus. This 18-hole course is tucked between the Atlantic coast and the Serra do Caldeirão mountains. It’s ideal for players of all abilities and with marvellous scenic views, what’s not to love?

The Caribbean:

Dorado beach, puerto rico.

superyacht with golf course

Jam-packed with glorious mountains, waterfalls, beaches, and cities: Puerto Rico is a hub of culture and history and an all-around stunning destination.

Just outside San Juan, Dorado Beach Resort is the place to go if you’re looking for world-class golf courses. The East Course is a stunning coastal course surrounded by picturesque ocean views. What’s more, Golf Digest named this course the number one golf course in Puerto Rico in 2016, and it hosted the PGA Tour Latinoamerica Tour Championship in 2015. It is perfect for golfers of all abilities and a challenge for even the most highly skilled.

Casa de Campo, Dominican Republic

superyacht with golf course

The Casa de Campo Resort in the Dominican Republic has three golf courses. The most famous is the Teeth of the Dog course, complete with ocean views and pristine fairways. Thus, it’s no wonder this course is ranked number one in the Caribbean.

The resort also boasts luxury facilities such as outstanding restaurants and bars, an equestrian centre, a marina and private beaches. Enjoyed by travellers and celebrities alike, this resort is the place to be for privacy and luxury.

Ocean Club, Atlantis Paradise Island, Bahamas:

superyacht with golf course

Atlantis Paradise Island features the Ocean Club Golf Course : an 18-hole, par-72 championship course covering 7,100 yards. Its position on a peninsula means that crosswinds are likely, making this course a challenge for even the most experienced golfers. Some say it’s the most picturesque golf course in the Bahamas, with spectacular views all around and some holes positioned right next to the ocean.

As if that wasn’t enough, the tremendous list of facilities this resort has to offer is exceptional. The island features 11 swimming pools (including the Adult-only The Cove Pool), a nightclub, a theatre, restaurants, casinos, a spa, sports facilities, and even a library: you’ll never want to leave. In short, Atlantis Paradise Island promises a golfing holiday you’ll never forget as this resort certainly lives up to its name.

‘Show Me Your Hands!’: Officer Recalls 2002 Standoff With Trump Suspect

Ryan W. Routh, who was arrested following an apparent attempted assassination of former President Donald J. Trump, was convicted on an explosives charge after the standoff in North Carolina.

By Eduardo Medina

Eduardo Medina reported from Greensboro, N.C.

  • Sept. 17, 2024

The police department in Greensboro, N.C., was on the lookout for Ryan W. Routh. He didn’t have a driver’s license, and investigators suspected he had an explosive device. So when Officer Tracy Fulk saw him driving near the Greensboro Coliseum on a cold day in December 2002, she pulled him over.

As she got close to his small pickup, Ms. Fulk said, she saw Mr. Routh reaching for a duffel bag beside him. He opened it, revealing a firearm.

“Show me your hands!” she recalled screaming at him. Mr. Routh sped off toward his roofing business in the central North Carolina city, where he barricaded himself inside with a fully automatic weapon, according to a local news report.

Ms. Fulk, who retired in 2017 after nearly two decades on the force, recounted the confrontation in an interview with The New York Times. Mr. Routh now faces federal weapons charges in Florida after what the authorities have described as an apparent attempted assassination of former President Donald J. Trump.

She recalled Mr. Routh walking back and forth inside his business, occasionally looking out the window at the dozens of officers who had established a perimeter around the building. After about two hours, he walked out — without a gun — and was arrested, Ms. Fulk said.

“He didn’t say a whole lot,” she said, noting that Mr. Routh had “acted like he had some sort of mental health issues.”

Mr. Routh was charged with “possessing a weapon of mass death and destruction,” a felony. Court documents reviewed by The New York Times on Tuesday describe the weapon as a “binary explosive with a 10-inch detonation and a blasting cap.” He was convicted and placed on supervised probation for 60 months.

The court also ordered him not to operate a firearm, and to get a mental health assessment, court records show. They do not indicate whether one was performed.

Forget a Helipad. These 10 Bonkers Superyachts Have Everything From Snow Rooms to Golf Tees.

These bonkers features show how yacht owners are customizing their vessels.

Just as superyacht design is generally pushing the envelope with large expanses of glass and more interior volume, a number of owners and designers are striving to instill even more wow factor into their boats. That doesn’t necessarily mean just supersizing everything.

Depending on the owner, that means custom features never before seen on a superyacht. The list includes 30-foot-long waterfalls and expanded spas—more new-age health clinic than classic gym—but they also extend to golf driving ranges and full-sized padel courts. Fifty-foot-high video walls, huge discos, and indoor cinemas, complete with vibrating seats to match the action on the screen, are one-offs on some of the more heavily customized yachts. Some yachts even have snow rooms.

The wildest of ideas are often becoming reality. Here are 10 of the most bonkers amenities on the water.

Snow Room, ‘Faith’

superyacht with golf course

Sub-zero rooms that recreate the glacial climate of the Alps are not a regular feature in shoreside spas, let alone yachts. Fincantieri’s 440-foot yacht Serene was the first boat to include a snow room when it delivered in 2011—along with a Nemo lounge, an enormous internal sea water pool, two heli-pads, and a children’s playroom with a climbing wall. Oh, and don’t forget the wild “between the decks” slide. Six years later, Norwegian yacht designer Espen Øino included the icy thrills of a snow room as a  feature aboard Faith . It’s the perfect Nordic pairing to a steamy-hot sauna, yet remains one of the most insane yachting luxuries out there.

Nemo Lounge, ‘Savannah’

superyacht with golf course

Superyacht underwater observatories have become so iconic they’re now coined by the term “Nemo,” “Neptune,” or “Aqua” lounges. The concept is a hullside window into the subaquatic world where guests can observe the vibrant marine life swimming under the yacht. Savannah and Elandess were among the first to have semi-submerged lounges, while Motoryacht A takes the concept a step farther with a fully submerged observation room that features glass on both sides and on the floor. One of the biggest superyacht launches of 2023 is Abeking and Rasmussen’s 388-foot Project 8507 , the German shipyard’s largest vessel to date, which has a semi-submerged Neptune lounge on the starboard side, as does the Harrison Eidsgaard–designed Project Toro built by Turquoise Yachts and due to deliver in 2024.

Video Wall, ‘H3’

superyacht with golf course

Video walls were built on several superyachts for different purposes. On Oceanco’s refit of H3 , the designers added a video wall in the “welcome lounge” near the stern of the yacht, and then along the walls to the main salon, essentially to provide a dramatic backdrop to the long, mundane corridor that separates the vessel’s tender garages. Aboard Luminosity , a 60-foot-high video wall shows different landscapes, including a 50-foot-long walk through a rain forest. “The owner wanted a wow factor,” says designer Zaniz Jakubowski. Other digital-art firms like Immersive International have created video walls for master suites to provide a nighttime environment that woos owners into a different world.

Disco, ‘Mystere Shadow’

superyacht with golf course

The chance to party the night away with friends and family is a huge entertainment draw for superyacht guests and owners. Magic Johnson’s yacht Aquila has an entire room dedicated to disco, with a DJ booth, AV system, smoke machine, and light show. Even that pales compared to the nightclub aboard support vessel Mystere Shadow . Designed to carry an arsenal of toys, from tenders and submersibles to motorcycles, cars, and helicopters, the yacht’s toy hangar converts into a warehouse party cavern with laser lights, a smoke machine, and the all-important disco ball to enjoy the mother of all superyacht parties.

Padel Court, ‘Aviva’

superyacht with golf course

Even Roger Federer wouldn’t be the star of the show aboard superyacht Aviva , thanks to the yacht’s indoor, full-sized padel tennis court. Measuring 65.6 by 32.8 feet, the court is one-upped by a 22-foot-high ceiling. It remains one of the most ambitious amenities ever installed on a yacht, even six years after its 2017 delivery. The court is located on a lower deck. Two tons of sand were needed to produce an adequate on-court bounce, while also providing soundproofing so late-night matches wouldn’t disturb sleeping guests. When the court isn’t in use, the net is removed, and the space converts into a football pitch or sports hall. There’s even a small viewing area where spectators can enjoy strawberries and cream to create a Wimbledon-like atmosphere at sea.

Wellness Center, ‘Amatasia’

superyacht with golf course

There are wellness centers aboard yachts, and then there are wellness centers . La Datcha ’s traditional hammam, sauna and fully equipped gym are rounded off with a stalagmite ice fountain embellished with atmospheric LED lighting for a frosty shock of cold ice on exiting the hot sauna. Likewise, conversion yacht Ragnar was built to cruise cold climates, but its wellness center mixes the allure of warmed benches and a sauna with shock of cold from its snow machine. The Lürssen-built Amatasia , designed for a former Olympic cyclist, takes the trend to the next level with a toning spa for professional athletes. It also has multiple saunas and steam rooms, a 12-seat spa pool, a full-depth plunge pool, an ice fountain, and hydrotherapy showers for a knock-out wellness experience.

Outdoor Cinema, ‘Maltese Falcon’

superyacht with golf course

Enjoying a night at the movies is a magical experience that any yacht worth its salt will offer. Ahpo ’s 12-seat cinema is equipped with velvet seats and a twinkling ceiling, while the cinema aboard White Rabbit —the largest trimaran in the world—ups the ante with vibrating seats and an atmospheric skylight. Few superyachts can beat the starlit sky experience aboard sailing yacht Maltese Falcon , where guests snuggle up to the latest blockbuster films projected on the lower sail. It’s the largest outdoor cinema screen on water. Following a 2023 refit, the yacht now also has an indoor cinema on the main deck, so even bad weather can’t prevent a visit to the silver screen.

Slide, ‘Titania’

superyacht with golf course

The inflatable slide aboard 240-foot Titania measures 43 feet, making it one of the longest superyacht drops down to the waves. Not for the faint hearted, it provides a quick adrenaline rush for guests who take the leap of faith from the sun deck into the sea. Paired with a trampoline and climbing frame, it’s an imaginative water park for all ages. But for guests looking for a few more twists and turns, the curved slide aboard Oceanco’s Helios brings even more fun to the superyacht slide experience. Designed for taller yachts, this bespoke contraption has extra high side rails and plenty of netting to ensure riders stay on the slide, no matter how fast they fly.

Golf Tee, ‘Lana’

superyacht with golf course

Even the largest superyacht can’t accommodate a nine-hole golf course, but Lucky Lady offers the next best thing with a retractable golf tee on the aft deck that appears at the touch of a button. Hitting a stack of biodegradable fish-food golf balls into the ocean is the ideal way to practice your drive, not to mention a fun way to pass time during long ocean passages. For golf aficionados keen to sharpen up their drives, Lana ’s elongated bow lends itself to a quick tee-off at sundown on its portable, inflatable green.

Waterfall, ‘Galactica Supernova’

superyacht with golf course

What’s not to love about a water feature, especially one that cascades down from the upper deck aft into a showstopping glass-sided swimming pool. That’s exactly the sight that greets all guests who board Heesen’s 229.8-foot Galactica Supernova . The sound and spray create a refreshing first impression. Galactica Supernova ’s feature was designed by Espen Øino, but it has become a popular feature on many yachts, including Quite Essential and Oceanco’s newly refitted H3 . Alternatively, Alfa Nero ’ s glass-ended backlit pool simply gives the impression of a waterfall—less spectacular but arguably easier to maintain.

What happens when a golf course’s most precious resource grows sparse?

The future of golf in America depends on responsible stewardship of our most important resource: water.

Jeff Mangiat

This content was first published in Golf Journal , a quarterly print publication exclusively for USGA Members. To be among the first to receive Golf Journal and to learn how you can ensure a strong future for the game, become a USGA Member today .

SUSTAINABILITY AND WATER conservation have become hot topics in recent years, and it’s easy to see why.

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), between the years 2000 and 2020, as much as 70 percent of the United States experienced abnormally dry conditions. Coupled with a rise in the Earth’s average temperature, that has created an alarming paradox: the rate of evaporation from soil and transpiration from plants has increased, making more water available in the air for precipitation, but, in some areas, the land continues to get steadily drier. As a result, the EPA predicts that historically wet areas of the country will get wetter, with an increased flood risk, and dry areas will get drier, with an increased risk of drought.

Water is an essential element for every life-sustaining activity on the planet, from hydration to agriculture to transportation and energy production. A robust audit of water usage best practices and sustainability efforts is thus a worthy goal for every facet of our society.

So where does golf fit into the complicated water equation? It’s a topic the USGA’s Green Section has been actively researching for the last 100-plus years — an endeavor that has only ramped up in urgency over the last several decades, especially in the Southwest, where warnings about a looming water shortage have been on a noticeably steady uptick.

“If we could have a scale to measure how dire it is from 1 to 10, I think we’d be on an 11 or 12,” said Matteo Serena, Ph.D., the USGA’s senior manager of irrigation research & services.

The problem, he notes, is not necessarily the water level in reservoirs, which can vary year to year based on rainfall or the melting of snowpack. Instead, Serena’s concern is the state of aquifers, which refers to underground saturated rock or soil that stores and transmits groundwater to sources like wells and springs. Aquifers are a principal source of groundwater in the Southwest — and Serena says they are at risk.

“Aquifers are getting depleted,” he said. “And we can’t really accurately measure aquifer recharge, or how much water is left.”

Unlike reservoirs, which can empty and refill, aquifers act like sponges rather than buckets. Squeeze a sponge, and it becomes depleted. When aquifers become depleted, they are rendered essentially unusable, because to refill them would take potentially thousands of years. And while reservoirs in states like California have been replenished by record rainfall in recent years, Serena said the pressure is still on.

“This is just temporary,” he said. “Historically speaking, we’re not in a much better situation than we were a few years ago.”

If we could have a scale to measure how dire it is from 1 to 10, I think we’d be on an 11 or 12.” Matteo Serena, Ph.D., USGA senior manager of irrigation research & services

For government agencies and authorities looking to set limits on water usage, golf courses make easy targets with their broad swaths of shining green grass. Cole Thompson, Ph.D., the USGA’s director of Green Section research, is keen to reshape the narrative that courses are water-wasting villains.

“Golf courses are very, very visible, so it’s easy to assume that they’re ubiquitous,” Thompson said. “While there are nearly 16,000 golf facilities in the U.S., they take up less than 1 percent of the arable land in the United States. We’re not going to solve the water crisis in the Southwestern United States by getting rid of golf courses. They are a very small land use category that delivers a lot in terms of life enrichment and economic value.”

Such perspective is important, Thompson said, because courses have so much more to offer than pure recreation.

“Even in a desert, a golf course can be a good use of resources because you’re going to get various benefits, including plant and animal habitat from the use of those resources, and other benefits like sequestering carbon dioxide,” he said. “All the plants on golf courses contribute to drawdown [storage of atmospheric carbon dioxide in plants and soil], mitigate urban heat islands by transpiring water, and provide habitat continuity in an otherwise rapidly developing world.”

Extensive research supports courses’ many contributions to improving and enriching their communities, for all the reasons Thompson stated above. Courses contribute to urban cooling, provide havens and habitats for wildlife with turfgrass and other vegetation that helps purify the air, and can even decrease stormwater runoff, not only helping to reduce the risk of flooding but also filtering and improving the quality of water that passes through the course.

Still, if current climate trends continue, courses could face an existential threat. Rising water costs and limited or restricted water usage could make operating a golf course unsustainable. It’s in everyone’s best interest to identify solutions that reconcile the appropriate maintenance of playing surfaces with the public perception of golf as a waste of precious resources. The fact is that courses in some areas of the country will need to adapt or face their potential demise. Fortunately, there are still plenty of reasons to be optimistic about golf’s future.

While sustainability conversations may seem to some to be a relatively recent phenomenon, pushed to the forefront of public consciousness by a spate of extreme weather, water usage and course-maintenance best practices are topics the USGA has prioritized since the Green Section’s founding in 1920. The goals of that era — improving golf course playing conditions and sustainability through research, education, course consulting, technology and championship agronomy — remain the same. USGA-led initiatives such as developing drought-tolerant grasses, decreasing irrigated acreage and leveraging sensor technology, are estimated to save U.S. courses more than $1.9 billion annually.

What does the game’s future look like in a potentially water-restricted world? Two Southwestern courses offer valuable case studies that shine a spotlight on the benefits of utilizing USGA-supported technology and innovations.

Jeff Goren, Director of Golf Course Operations, takes a soil sample at the ninth fairway, at The Mirabel Club in Scottsdale, Arizona on Friday, June 14, 2024.

Mirabel Golf Club is a stunning Tom Fazio design set in the desert foothills of North Scottsdale, Ariz. The private club, opened in 2001, has a long-held reputation for immaculate conditions. Jeff Goren, the superintendent since course construction began in 2000, says that while Arizona has long been at the forefront of sustainability efforts, there has been pressure to improve even more in the last few years. Goren and his team have risen to the challenge, implementing several strategies that have made a significant difference in Mirabel’s water usage.

“We want firm surfaces, we want playability. That’s always been a desire,” Goren said. “We’re being pushed to the limits. To accomplish more reduction, we’re relying on more technology, moisture sensors and a more technical understanding of our moisture levels — what’s acceptable and tolerable.”

According to Goren, approximately 70 percent of Mirabel’s annual water usage occurs during Arizona’s hot summer months, roughly May through September. It’s a time during which Goren believes he can see the greatest amount of savings by experimenting with deficit irrigation, a strategy that involves replacing less water through irrigation than plants are likely to consume, to achieve desired growth, quality and playability. Goren is also actively testing plots of drought-resistant grasses on the practice area, with hopes of installing the best-performing breed on one of Mirabel’s holes by next summer. He also has a longstanding commitment to limiting the course’s overseeding practices.

View of test plots of drought resistant grass from Oklahoma State University, currently growing at the far end of the practice range at The Mirabel Club in Scottsdale, Arizona on Friday, June 14, 2024.

“We made the decision years ago to not overseed our rough,” Goren said. “We do overseed the rough around the green complexes, but not the areas around the fairways. It’s a great visual, a classic Southwest desert look, and there’s water efficiencies there as well.”

Other strategies that have paid dividends for Goren are utilizing effluent water (recycled wastewater) for irrigation and topdressing the fairways with sand, a strategy he implemented in 2005.

“Native soil conditions are not ideal,” Goren said. “There’s a high clay content; infiltration rates were very poor. Combine that with effluent water being high in salts that increase the soil’s hold on water, and that resulted in water which was not available to the plant.”

By topdressing consistently over the years, Goren and his team have been able to build an improved foundation for optimal absorption.

“I call it a matrix,” Goren said, “a matrix of sand and organic matter that has built up over the years, and it provides a great growing medium. The improved soil creates healthier turf, deeper roots, more plant-available water, and we don’t have to irrigate as much. Capillary action of water has improved, there’s more air exchange, a better root structure – just a better environment for turf.”

eff Goren, Director of Golf Course Operations, uses the POGO system to check moisture percentage on the 18th green at The Mirabel Club in Scottsdale, Arizona on Friday, June 14, 2024.

Mirabel’s membership has also taken a proactive approach to sustainability, creating a water management task force that meets quarterly to discuss progress and potential future issues. For Goren, there is comfort in being prepared.

“We realize it’s not one thing that’s going to save 5, 10 or 20 percent of our water,” he said. “It’s going to be a multitude of things where I think you’re going to be able to make the difference.”

Three hundred miles northwest of Mirabel, Anthem Country Club in Henderson, Nev., has been preparing to comply with a newly introduced water-reduction mandate from the Southern Nevada Water Authority.

“It was scary when we heard it,” said Anthem director of agronomy James Symons, who was tasked with reducing Anthem’s water usage by 25 percent or be subject to costly fines.

Fortunately, Symons and his team had previously identified some important potential infrastructure improvements that could help the cause. Anthem, which opened in 1999, was in desperate need of a new irrigation system.

Evening irrigation at the ninth hole at Anthem Country Club in Henderson, Nevada on Monday, June 17, 2024.

“Especially in the desert where you water virtually every single night, it seems there’s no supplemental rainfall to really give your pumps a break,” Symons said. “So everything just fails.”

The course’s irrigation system was completely redone in 2020, and new lining was also installed to stop leaks in the course’s irrigation lake. The next step was new greens, and when the news of the reduction mandate came through, Symons saw an opportunity.

“We were already lined up to do our green renovation in 2022,” Symons said. “I took it to my GM, Shelley Caiazzo, and eventually in an emergency presentation to our board, saying, Hey, there’s no way we’re becoming compliant with our current grass types, which are predominantly perennial ryegrass. I basically pitched to her that because we’re fortunate to be closing to do our greens renovation, we should take this opportunity to convert our fairways to bermudagrass.”

Symons got the needed sign-off and sourced Bandera bermuda sod — a drought-tolerant hybrid grass favored for its rapid establishment and fast recovery — for the course’s 35 acres of fairways, and 49 acres in total (including the practice facility and select areas of rough). In addition to replacing the grass, Symons and his team were actively engaged in a turf-removal project, converting more than 15 acres of out-of-play areas into desertscape or landscaping.

The results were almost immediate. Last year, Anthem was in full compliance with the reduction mandate ahead of schedule and is on track to meet the club’s goal this year as well.

Thanks to Symons’ efforts, last year Anthem received the City of Henderson’s inaugural Water Conservation Award, which celebrated the club’s endeavors to save more than 59 million gallons of water. Member reaction has been very positive.

“They realize it’s bigger than all of us,” Symons said of the course changes. “The playability has been fantastic. The roughs are great. There’s increased roll in the winter because the grass isn’t growing, and then in the summers it just looks beautiful. And at the end of the day, the course is going to be viable in the future.”

Regardless of what climate change has in store in terms of weather patterns, the USGA is committed to helping courses prepare. One such initiative, dubbed “15-30-45,” was introduced last year: a 15-year, $30 million commitment to help courses find solutions to reduce their water usage by as much as 45 percent. There is no mandate here; the USGA is simply trying to foster awareness on helpful topics like irrigation optimization, water sourcing and storage.

“We know the technologies already exist to make that happen,” said Matt Pringle, Ph.D., the managing director of the USGA Green Section. “And we at the USGA can invest in helping golf courses have the tools they need to make that happen.”

In addition to publishing recommendations and research for courses to utilize, the USGA understands that for courses to adopt a new practice, there needs to be confidence that the changes will benefit the course in both the short and long term. That’s why, in addition to supplying the information, the USGA is also partnering with select courses around the country to use them as test cases to demonstrate to other facilities where and when the water conservation potential of a strategy outweighs the investment and disruption required for implementation.

The USGA is a longtime supporter of research and development of drought-tolerant grasses, which use up to 20 percent less water than other varieties. But it’s one thing to read about the success of a given strategy, and another to see it in action. So, when a real-world example like Anthem Golf Club’s installation of Bandera bermudagrass validates a predicted outcome, it’s undeniably compelling for other facilities. According to the USGA, courses can expect to see a return on such investments in five to 10 years.

“We want to show what it would take to implement these strategies, because there’s a spectrum of cost and implementation challenges,” Thompson said. “What we want to show people is, if you want to save water, for whatever reason, we think you can. And based on what your motivations are and how much money you have to invest and what your goals are, let us show you what we think are your best options.”

Whenever changes are made to a course, a primary concern tends to be the course’s playability. With less water applied, will playing conditions become inferior? U.S. Open anchor site Pinehurst No. 2 recently hosted the world’s best golfers for the fourth time and provided yet another example of the success of sustainability practices.

“At Pinehurst No. 2, they dramatically reduced the number of acres of maintained turf, down to 56 acres,” Pringle said. “The overall course footprint is probably 200 to 300 acres. So, we’re talking about a quarter or less of the overall footprint being maintained turf. And the fact that we’re conducting Opens at No. 2, plus it’s a very high-end golf resort, tells me that you can play the game at all skill levels on 50 acres of turf.”

According to the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America’s most recent environmental profile, the median golf course maintains around 90 acres of turf.

What we want to show people is, if you want to save water, for whatever reason, we think you can. Cole Thompson, Ph.D., USGA director of Green Section research

“There’s an opportunity for turf reduction, even in areas of the country where they’ve been very proactive and ahead of the curve on water conservation,” Pringle said.

Courses can start on a sustainability and water-saving journey by asking a few simple questions: how much turf is being irrigated, and is that turf optimized to match a course’s environment? From there, the next step is deciding when and how that turf will be irrigated.

“These are things that you’ve got to have goals and resources to pull off,” Thompson said. “But they represent the big levers you can pull to really change the amount of water you use.”

Courses that want to dive deeper into conservation efforts can also investigate technological innovations like the moisture sensors utilized at Mirabel, and strategic irrigation systems that minimize water waste by delivering water to the roots instead of on the surface, where wind and evaporation can affect absorption. Also, the importance of basic maintenance practices cannot be overstated, per Thompson.

“We’ve got to make sure that the irrigation system is in good shape, that it’s not leaking, that it’s applying water where we want and at the rate that we want,” Thompson said. “That includes a lot of laborious but important maintenance in terms of making sure that the sprinkler heads are operating and functioning properly, that they’re level and the nozzles aren’t worn and you’re getting the precipitation rate you expect from them.”

Another resource currently in the works from the USGA Green Section is a Water Conservation Playbook. The playbook outlines conservation strategies that have proven efficacy from years of research, developed by university, industry and USGA experts, which are now being demonstrated by superintendents, architects and researchers to vet their real-world potential. A superintendent-facing version of the playbook will be published by the end of the year.

“The playbook is something we intend to share freely and broadly with the golf industry, both in this country and around the world,” Pringle said. “Most courses can’t pursue environmental stewardship as simply a feel-good project. It must make good business sense, and we’re always there with them on that. At the end of the day, anything we talk about has to be viable for them as a business. But that doesn’t mean that doing right as a business can’t also be doing right by the environment.”

Since its founding in 1894, the USGA’s mission has been to take a long view of the game. New initiatives are not based on immediate gains in the next quarter or fiscal year, but rather the next decade and generation. For the past 100 years, the USGA’s Green Section has endeavored to meet golf’s environmental challenges head-on. Thanks to its continuing efforts to advance the science of turfgrass management and conservation, there is reason for optimism. With mindful stewardship, the game we all love will not only endure, it will be positioned to thrive for the next 100 years, too.

72m CRN N Joy yacht launch

10 of the latest superyacht launches

Yards launch bigger, better and more standout superyachts every month and now that the summer season is in full swing, there are plenty of new models making their way to the Med for some time spent cruising ahead of the upcoming boat show season...

Length: 67m Builder: Heesen

In June 2023, Sparta emerged from the shipyard and overthrew the 60.6-metre Lusine as the Dutch builder’s largest steel construction to date. Exterior and interior styling are by Winch Design , whose studio opted for a low exterior profile alongside a hull accented in “Venetian red” and metallic grey. Her elemental interiors include an earthy main saloon upholstered in real palm leaf and an airy master cabin with mother-of-pearl inlays, soft fabrics and hazy Tai Ping carpets.

Sparta is currently for sale with Arcon Yachts.

Bad Company Support

Length: 53.3m Builder: Damen Yachting

Bad Company Support is the first unit in the Dutch shipyard’s new YS53 support vessel series, built for legendary sportfisherman Anthony Hsieh. As Hsieh’s largest yacht, she will be joining his expansive fleet offering game fishing expeditions and supporting marine conservation projects in some of the planet’s most unchartered waters. All of her design and naval architecture were completed entirely in-house by Damen Yachting.

Bad Company Support is expected to be delivered later this month.

Highland Fling XVIII

Length: 24.7m Builder: Gunboat

Gunboat's flagship catamaran is expected to be one of the fastest in its size bracket, capable of exceeding true wind speed at just six knots. Highland Fling XVIII’s striking scarlet exterior is owed to French studio VPLP with interiors by Chedal Anglay Design – who plotted them with the help of virtual reality. She is currently undergoing sea trials in La Grande Motte, France, joined by her racing team who plan to put her performance to the test.

Highland Fling XVIII is expected to be delivered in August 2023, with her racing debut scheduled for the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup in Porto Cervo.

Length: 77.7m Builder: Golden Yachts

With a contemporary-style plumb bow and trapezium-shaped windows, O’Rea carves a more modern profile when compared to her predecessors O’Pari and O’Ptasia . Her distinctive exterior is courtesy of Stefano Vafiadis , with interior styling also handled by Vafiadis in collaboration with Italian studio Massari Design . More than 250 finishes are claimed to have been used throughout, including polished marble and precious stones. The yacht will be also home to a collection of contemporary artworks, curated by Vasilis Dragnis in collaboration with Anna Chatzinassiou.

O'Rea is expected to be delivered later this month and will make her global debut at the Monaco Yacht Show later this year.

Length: 35m Builder: Vanquish Yachts

Originally commissioned in 2020, this anticipated build launched in May and will be the largest member of the Vanquish fleet upon her delivery to the Hamptons. Manu is one of the fastest aluminium yachts on the water, delivering a top speed of over 40 knots thanks to a combination of three MTU Rolls Royce engines. Befitting her eye-watering speeds is a sporty, streamlined exterior designed by Guido de Groot .

Manu is expected to be delivered this month.

Danzante Bay

Length: 50m Builder: Crescent Custom Yachts

Danzante Bay is the largest superyacht to be built in Canada and marks the first new launch by Crescent Custom Yachts since Crescent Lady in February 2020. Commissioned by an American owner, she was named after his Mexican resort and golf course. The yacht is built from a composite hull bought from Christensen Yachts with exterior design owed to Gregory C. Marshall and interiors by British studio H2 Yacht Design .

Danzante Bay is expected to be delivered in August 2023.

Length: 59.4m Builder: Rossinavi

Akula is Italian shipyard Rossinavi’s first-ever explorer yacht. Ice-classified, her stand-out scarlet hull and white aluminium superstructure is designed by Gian Paolo Nari . Interior design is by Ancona-based FM Architettura , with the yacht’s layout optimised to support marine research and philanthropic projects. In particular, she can store various diving equipment and two six-metre containers that can act as transportable science labs.

Akula is expected to be delivered in September 2023.

Length: 33.5m Builder: Baltic Yachts

Named after an ancient Caribbean deity, this sloop-rigged sailing yacht was commissioned by a highly experienced family with around-the-world cruising in mind. Zemi was designed by Malcolm McKeon and features his trademark wrap-over teak decking, as well as multiple headsail options for various weather conditions. Interiors were completed by Andreas Martin-Löf in his yachting debut and feature warm walnut and limestone veneers bonded to lightweight honeycomb structures.

Zemi is expected to be delivered this month.

Length: 50m Builder: Columbus Yachts

With exteriors and interiors created by Marco Casali of Too-Design, Anjelif ’s brass colouring is far from her only stand-out feature. She also boasts several technical innovations, such as a hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system and onboard sanitisation that incorporates cold plasma for the elimination of airborne viruses and bacteria. An impressive recreational highlight is the touch-and-go helipad on the bow, which can convert to an open-air cinema when not in use.

Anjelif is expected to be delivered in August 2023 and will debut at this year's Monaco Yacht Show .

Riva 82 Diva

Length: 25m Builder: Riva Yachts

This unit is the debut of Riva’s brand new flybridge series, which aims to “open a new chapter” for the Sarnico-based builder with its “revolutionary approach to the use of space”. Designed by Officina Italiana Design in conjunction with Ferretti Group , the Riva 82 Diva features one of the largest flybridges in its category at 40 square metres. Two large bulwarks fold out to create overwater terraces, expanding the yacht’s six-metre beam by an additional three metres.

The Riva 82 Diva is expected to be delivered in September 2023 and will attend the Cannes Yachting Festival that same month.

Y añadió: “Nada me frenará. ¡No me rendiré nunca!”.

Richer, Long, Tucker y Miller reportaron desde Washington. Los periodistas de The Associated Press Lindsay Whitehurst y Michael Biesecker en Washington, Michael Balsamo, Jill Colvin, Michelle L. Price y Michael R. Sisak en Nueva York, y Meg Kinnard en Houston contribuyeron a este despacho.
