Heavenly Twins Catamarans are well-known as a capable seaboats and have made some remarkable voyages, at least 3 circumnavigations have been completed. These popular cruising multi-hulls are equally happy sitting on a drying mooring or roaming oceans. She offers family-sized accommodation in twin, private, aft double cabins, a comfortable saloon and a practical galley. The aft cabins also provide a safe play area for children and the saloon has plenty of space and stowage. Heavenly Twins have a center cockpit offering excellent crew security, and have an easily-handled rig. She will suit shorthanded sailors and families alike.

Extended in 1989 to a 27 foot version with a ‘stoop through’ to a large aft cabin with a double bed.

2023 Boat Buyers Guide: Catamarans

The popularity of the multihull (aka catamaran or cat) fishing boats has never been greater, as more and more boatbuilders enter this growing segment of the market. The inherent stability of the catamaran design rolls less with the seas, making fishing offshore less tiresome and more comfortable. Available from 20 to 48 feet, catamarans typically offer a large fishing platform with generous storage and fishing amenities. They are available in a wide variety of deck layouts, including center-consoles, dual-consoles, and even pilothouse and express variants.

Big Picture

The large deck area of a catamaran enables many large underdeck storage lockers and insulated fish boxes in the sponsons. This gives anglers ample room for gear and the day’s catch. The catamaran’s stability, fishability, and smooth ride in rough seas make it attractive to anglers as well as day-cruisers. A center-console version adds 360 degrees of angler access to the rail. With the dual-console design, generous seating behind a beam-to-beam windshield makes for a great family fishing-friendly setup.

Live bait is one of the most popular types of fishing in virtually every coastal zone. To do it successfully requires optimal water capacity and proper flow. The minimum size of the outflow water plumbing should be twice the size of the inflow. The plumbing should have a drain at the bottom to shed scales at the end of the day, as well as a drain at the top of the well to adjust capacity and allow overflow. Above-deck transom-mounted wells should fully flood to the lids when running to keep baits from getting beat up. 

Tip: A sump box with multiple pumps in case a pump fails is the best setup for first-rate livewells. Conveniently located inflow and outflow valves make it easy to optimize the flow without tiring your bait from swimming too much in the well. 

Rod Storage

Having enough rod holders is essential to be successful for opportunity fishing. Look for vertical rod storage along the console and across the back of the T-top. Many models also have rod holders along the outboard transom wall. Having plenty of gunwale rod holders for drift- and kite-fishing is helpful. 

Tip: Placing adjustable swivel rod holders by Gemlux makes deep-dropping, lure-fishing and drifting even easier because they allow your rods to face the direction the baits are fishing, yet they can be swiveled back to keep rods from sticking out of the boat while running and docking. 

Manufacturers often offer multiple choices for horsepower, but whatever the choice, the engines must come in pairs. For example, you might order twin outboards (one for each sponson) or four outboards (two for each sponson), but single- or triple-outboard configurations are not common on a cat. Optimal selection should be made based on user load, weight of the boat, ride comfort , performance desires, and best case for resale. It’s a rare day when you can run wide open, but having more horsepower gives better torque at slower speeds and thus better control. Running larger engines slower gives better fuel efficiency too.

Tip: When possible, choose the highest horsepower offered because it typically leads to a better resale value with a shorter sales cycle. 

Power steering from engine manufacturer Optimus or SeaStar is essential with the higher horsepower required for larger boats, and it makes installing and operating the upper station in a tower far more practical and comfortable.

With the power demands of electronics, livewell pumps, stereo amps and more, it is wise to have at least two house batteries, and for larger boats, a third or fourth with a multibank charger for dockside. Each engine should have its own dedicated battery as well. 

Electronics

Typically choosing the largest screen or multiple screens that will fit on the console is best-case scenario for ease of use, ergonomics, and visibility. VHF radios, stereo controller, and equipment switches for lighting, pumps, and accessories should all be integrated with greatest visibility and ease of operator reach. 

A Tale of Two Hulls 

A catamaran rides on pair of hulls, or sponsons, each thinner and sharper than  that of a similarly sized monohull boat. The narrow sponsons of the cat tend to slice easily through water to deliver a smooth ride, even in rough seas. At the same time, with the sponsons positioned out to the sides of the boat, cats tend to roll less, thus providing great stability to enhance crew comfort, security and safety. However, cats tend to corner more flatly than a monohull, and some hulls (but not all) tend to lean outward versus inward during a turn.

Experts Say

Newer designs such as Invincible’s Morelli and Melvin-designed semi-asymmetrical sponsons eliminate some of the negatives of the cat design, such as “sneezing,” where water sprays out the front of the boat when hitting a wave. They’ve also controlled the uncomfortable “outboard lean” ­sensation common in older designs when in a turn. Once transitioned to a ­catamaran, many become true believers and preach the benefits of the design.

Editor Says: Saltwater fishing cats not only offer superb stability and smooth ride, but some also display exceptional speed and range. I recall one trip out of Key West, Florida, aboard an Invincible 40 Cat with four 350 hp outboards to the Dry Tortugas. It was a 60-mile run, and we made it there in 70 minutes. Laughlin, NV: Clark County covers an area the size of New Jersey and is popular destination for water recreation on the Colorado River. Clark County Fire Dept. selected this 26’ Munson jet boat for fire/rescue operations on the Colorado River. King Salmon, AK: Katmai National Park encompasses 6395 square miles in southwest Alaska.   Park rangers selected this 26’ Munson for law enforcement, emergency services and rescue operations.   The walk through cabin is outfitted with pilot & co-pilot suspension seats, port & starboard seat lockers for passengers, and Webatso forced air cabin heater.   Twin Yamaha 150 outboards are installed on hydraulic jack plates to lift the engines vertically during frequent beaching operations.   A tow post, engine guard and EZ Loader trailer complete the package.

Roche Harbor, WA: This 26’ Packcat is set up to take full advantage of recreational activities in the San Juan Islands. Lake Tapps, WA: East Pierce Fire & Rescue operates this 26’ Munson on Lake Tapps, which has over 45 miles of shoreline with hundreds of waterfront homes and several parks. Portland, OR:  The USGS Oregon Water Science Center operates the 26’ R/V Melanie Ann , a hydrographic survey vessel. Specialty outfitting on this vessel includes moon pool in the aft deck with telescoping arm for deploying high power transducers and a davit with variable speed reel for deploying towfish based sonar instruments and sediment samplers. Additional outfitting includes a retractable bimini top over the foredeck, side boarding door, flip out dive ladder, Garmin navigation electronics, computer work station and an amber light bar.

Lake Travis, TX: Travis County Park Rangers are responsible for public safety, search & rescue and emergency medical response calls. Their 26’ Munson is outfitted with a lifting davit with 12V windlass, Whelen light bar, bow door dive ladder, Panasonic Toughbook docking station and 12” Raymarine Axiom Pro with 3D sonar module. A large locker is installed on the T-top roof for carrying stokes baskets.

Anacortes, WA: Washington State DNR operates several Munson Boats including the 26’ M/V Perpetuity used to service DNR land in the San Juan Islands. A large radar arch allows stowage of a dinghy on the cabin roof. Twin 150 HP outboards are installed on hydraulic jack plates for shallow operations.

Olympia, WA: Washington State DOT is responsible for performing bridge inspections and prioritizing maintenance work on over 7300 bridges. They selected this 26’ Munson trailerable dive boat for conducting underwater bridge inspections throughout the state. Outfitting includes scuba bottle racks, large HP cylinder rack, port & starboard side dive doors and bow door dive ladder. The cabin is outfitted with seating for five persons, Webatso diesel cabin heater and flip-up work table.

Columbia River, WA: Chief Joseph Dam is the largest hydropower producing dam operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers. The Army Corps uses this Munson landing craft for equipment and personnel transport, dam maintenance, and data collection. Outfitting on this vessel includes an offset heated cabin with seating for four crew members, integrated gunnel storage shelves, cargo deck tie down pockets, Garmin navigation electronics and a recovery ladder on the swim step.

Their 26’ Munson fire/rescue boat is used on Joe Pool Lake, a large reservoir located just south of Dallas. Empire, MI: The National Park Service selected this 26’ Munson for servicing Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, which covers 35 miles of shoreline and two historic islands on Lake Michigan. This 26’ patrol boat has a 10’ wide beam and large offset cabin for six crewmen and equipment in stormy conditions. Their 26’ Munson is outfitted with a hydraulic gill net roller, hydraulic davit, side dive door, tow post and engine guard. Their 26’ Munson is used at their Big Bend Power Station, situated on Tampa Bay. North Pole, AK: Alyeska Pipeline operates a pair of these 26’ Responder Class jet boats on the Yukon, Tanana and Copper Rivers. The shallow vee hull design allows the boats to operate in 1 foot of water. A Marine Power 430 HP V8 and Hamilton 241 jet provide plenty of power for towing in river currents. The center console T-top is outfitted with a canvas enclosure and forced air cabin heat. Their 26’ Munson is utilized year round for transport of materials and crew changes in inclement weather. Outfitting includes a 7’ x 8’ cabin with seating for six, forced air cabin heater, Garmin 740 plotter/sounder, anchor windlass, and trailer.

Friday Harbor, WA: The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office required an all-weather, fast response, beach landing, day/night patrol boat with a foam collar fendering system. Their 26’ Munson is outfitted with a full width cabin, two shock absorbing pedestal seats, passenger bench seats with work table, and a forward cuddy cabin with V-berth. Additional outfitting includes a Webatso forced air cabin heater, law enforcement LED lighting, Furuno radar plotter sounder, L3 AIS system, and Flir night vision camera.

Lake Claiborne, LA: In 1966, the Louisiana state legislature created the Claiborne Parish Watershed District. The Watershed District commission works with all to help assure that resources are protected and developed in the public interest. The Claiborne Parish Sheriff uses their 26’ Munson for patrolling the watershed to assure boating safety, as well as maintain channel markers and perform dive/rescue operations. A Hummingbird 998 HD SI sonar with AS 360SSI transducer provides extremely sharp underwater imaging and is also capable of recording underwater video.

Sitka, AK: You don't have to walk the docks in Sitka very long before you spot a Munson. The newest member of the Sitka Munson fleet is this 26 Sport. It was designed to transport two ATVs to a remote property in the Southeast Alaska. It is outfitted with an electric pot hauler, Garmin GPS unit and an offset wheelhouse. The auxiliary outboard is mounted on a telescoping bracket and draws fuel from the main tank.

Richmond, CA: The Chevron Texaco refinery in Richmond operates a fleet of five Munson boats including the Osprey. When an oil tanker arrives, it is immediately surrounded by containment boom to protect the surrounding waterway in the event of an incident. A transom engine bracket was installed to increase the cargo deck. A removable boom roller assists the crew in retrieving the boom.

Panama City, Panama: The Panama Canal Authority Munson performs aquatic vegetation control activities within shallow rivers and emergency response support during oil spill incidents. Lemont, IL: The CITGO Lemont Refinery Emergency Response Team operates this Munson as an oil spill response boat in the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal. Boat was built to pass through an invasive species barrier located near the refinery. Equipment includes a Hale Class 1 Attack Max 450 GPM fire pump, dual 2.5" discharges, 30 gallon Class B foam system, lifting eyes, Whelen LED Emergency light bar, and LED flood lights.

Olathe, KS: Garmin International operates trailerable hydrographic survey vessels. Each boat features a foredeck moon pool with a derrick designed for deploying the latest high power survey transducer. A Kohler 5EKD 5kW gasoline generator provides power for survey equipment and cabin air conditioning. A Garmin 7212 plotter/radar/sounder navigation suite includes an autopilot system.

Galveston, TX: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District fondly known as the "Custodians of the Coast". They operate their Munson on missions including flood risk mitigation, ecosystem restoration and military construction. It is also capable of launching and retrieving an ATV during shoreline protection and regulatory missions. Special features include wheelhouse window tint, roll down shades, a Kohler 5kW generator and a collapsible RAM mast.

Fontana Lake, TN: At 480 feet, Fontana Dam is the tallest concrete dam east of the Rocky Mountains and forms Fontana Lake with a shoreline of 240 miles. The National Park Service operates this 26’ Packcat for transporting ATV’s and work crews to remote areas in the Smoky Mountains National Park Complex. Outfitting includes a 3” tow post, engine guard, push knees, Garmin GPS plotter/sounder and Tuff tandem axle trailer.

Wainwright, AK: The Umiaq Corporation operates the M/V Seahorse Island and sister ship M/V Crescent Island in support of their onshore contingency response program contract with Shell Oil in the Chuckchi Sea. Designed to be multi-purpose response platforms, each boat was fitted with a 6" tow post and tow screen to allow them to tow fully laden barges and other equipment. The wheelhouse features a portable head and forced air cabin heat.

Oooguruk Island, AK: Pioneer Resources set up shop in Prudhoe Bay in 2002. Their goal was to streamline processes and reduce costs in landscape previously dominated by larger oil companies. Alaskan oil producers must be committed to environmental protection and responsibility, so Pioneer operates a Munson as part of its incident response action plan. Cold weather features include forced air cabin heat and aluminum storm window covers for arctic storage.

Camano Island, WA: M/V Miss Tuffy II is the private sport fishing boat of a Camano Island resident. The wheelhouse features forced air heat, teak effect decking and a refrigerator. A head compartment with flushing head can be accessed from an interior wheelhouse door. To make the boat easy to clean and slip resistant, Line-X deck coating was applied to all walking surfaces. The single Volvo D4 power plant offers great fuel economy and range.

Theodore, AL: Response Resources provided oil spill response management support to the BP demobilization and decontamination effort in Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. Four Bayou Responder OSR's paired with Munson recovery barges are at work in the gulf. Special features include tow protection screens, under gunnel storage shelves and large push knees. Flood lighting on the deck let the vessels operate 24 hours a day.
