I'll keep it in a marina in the central Puget Sound area. The boat didn't come with an outboard, which brings me to my question.

1 cubic foot of 2 lb density foam will float 60.4 lbs (water weigh 62.4 lbs /cu ft) 62.4 -2 =60.4) 364 lbs / 60.4 lbs/cu ft = 6 cubic ft So you need 6 cubic feet just to float the keel. if the hull weighs 600 lbs and 100 lbs of that is wood then fiberglass is 500 lbs. fiberglass submerged weighs 500 x 0.33 = 165 165/60.4 = 2.7 cu ft.

Mar 16, 2009. #1. I am looking at a 15' long Balboa boat. It appears to be in pretty good shape. No blisters or obvious cracks; the keel isn't scratched up at all. The access to the top of the keel is small & I can't see the keel bolts. But the bilge appears to be dry; looks like it has never had much water in the bilge, as it is fairly clean.

A true blue water yet trailerable boat weighing in at over 6,000 lbs. I would so love one. Yes your 26 weighs about 4,000 according to forums.

I ended up getting to know the Coastal Recreation boats pretty well including the Balboas and Aquarius's. While the Balboa 27's were a pretty nice design for a trailer sailor of that era, there is absolutely nothing about these boats which make them suitable for "blue water" sailing. These were very lightly built boats, with minimal stability.

Oct 25, 2010. #4. The Balboa 20 was designed by Lyle Hess and he (now departed) had a reputation for building small boats that were capable of coastal and offshore use. The B20 is one of these. The boat sales very well and is well built. It lacks interior space, however.

Reasonably easy (2-person) trailering / launch / rigging - The Balboa 20 is very easy to rig and launch. To avoid the necessity of spreaders, Lyle Hess designed the boat with a heavier mast section than would normally be found on a 20 footer. Additionally, he gave the boat a fractional rig with shrouds aft of the mast step.
