Our History

Founded in 1984, our first Commodore was elected in 1985 and the Hudson Cove Yacht Club began its operation centered at a marina on the beautiful Hudson River, thirty miles north of the Battery in New York City.

The photo above depicts one of the evening's skies shows as the sun sets from one of our member boats.

Hudson Cove Yacht Club is dedicated to the support of yachting and associated programs for its members. The club encourages good seamanship and fellowship through racing, cruising, and social and educational activities for both sailors and powerboaters. 

With more than 50 family units as members,  there is a high level of participation in the fun-filled social calendar which includes throughout the year, parties, banquets, cookouts, and the like, as well as outings and special events too. 

Hudson Cove Yacht Club has:

• powerboat programs
• club cruises on the Hudson River and into Long Island Sound
• educational seminars and speakers
• as well as other yachting-related offerings

As a benefit of membership, members have access to discounts on merchandise, services, and even transient fees, as well as a wide range of reciprocal privileges at Hudson River Boat and Yacht Club Association participating member yacht clubs. 

Our club is located at the Safe Harbor Haverstraw Marina on the west shore of the Hudson River in West Haverstraw, New York.

Charting a Yacht Club

Imagine that you and a few friends enjoy boating and then imagine that this group begins to formulate the concept of a club. Yes, a yacht club. And this is what happened.....

The idea of a yacht club was little more than a flickering light, a long-range possible dream conjured up on a bleak winter’s night by Jeff Friedman and a small group, of sailors and powerboaters. The light brightened and the dream became reality as a first meeting was held.

Although no record exists to pinpoint the exact date, it was sometime in the fall of 1984. Ron Alfandre, Don Merberg, and Jeff Friedman began getting together and talking about forming such a club to be based out of Haverstraw Marina. They each kept their own boats there and so the venue was ideal. And they had friends there, fellow boaters and boat neighbors who they expected to be interested. Over the winter of 1984/85, they decided on a name: Hudson Cove Yacht Club. Preliminary by-laws were written. And, the statement of purpose developed.

And that is what happened.

In some files recently found, was a letter dated June 24, 1985, from the Vice-Commodore, Ron Alfandre, welcoming Nancy DeVries as a new member of this new yacht club. On the masthead were listed the flag officers of the organization:

• Vice-Commodore Ron Alfandre
• Rear-Commodore Richard Gale
• Senior Fleet Captain Graham Bowes
• Treasurer Donald Merberg and
• Recording Secretary Mark Williams

Summer 1985

The summer of ’85 was “planning” time and by October 31, 1985 members comprising a steering board, had their first meeting. Present were some of the folks named above plus a few additional (listed as in the minutes):

Jeff Friedman, Don Merberg, Ron Alfandre, Graham Bowes and Nancy DeVries

And mentioned, but not present were: Dick Gale, Donna Wyder and Fred Rosenthal

October 31, 1985

Now with a formal Board of Governors, a meeting was held. Those members present were...Jeff Friedman, Don Merberg, Ron Alfandre, Graham Bowles and Nancy DeVries

Absent: Dick Gale Donna Wyder and Fred Rosenthal

November 1985

By November, editor Fred Rosenthal had mailed the first issue of the new club’s publication, “The Yardarm”. It contained good information about club activities and the upcoming very first elections for the Board of Governors planned for the December 6th meeting. Listed were 15 possible candidates for the 9 open positions on the Board.

January 1986

In January there were two Board of Governor’s meetings. The first was an informal organizational meeting with the newly elected board.

March brought the first Annual Dinner Dance (later called the Commodore’s Ball), held on the 8th, at the Rockland Manor, NY. The ticket price for the event was a bargain at $30 for dinner, drinks, music, and dancing.

April marked another important waypoint with the April 11th membership meeting. Nancy DeVries and her committee of Terry Dwyer, Graham Bowes, and Nancy Nelle had worked diligently to prepare a full set of by-laws for the club. A motion to accept these By-laws was made, followed by the vote. It was passed unanimously.

As a club, we joined the Hudson River Yacht Racing Association, HRYRA, and hosted the first of our annual HCYC Regattas. 

From an idea in the thoughts of only a few, this became a Club of activity and enthusiasm. And, the word about Hudson Cove spread. It was an exciting time as the Club established itself, gained recognition in the yachting community, and developed its well-respected racing program. By year-end in 1987: the club membership was at 72 boat units. And by the following year's end, 1988: club membership, totaled 83 boat units.

Boat Owning Memberships

• Upgraded twin dispenser will pump 22 gallons per minute, providing at-cost unleaded gas and diesel
• On-site pumpout facility
• State-of-the-art concrete docks throughout moorage
• Updated boathouse sale rule makes it easier for new members to purchase a boathouse in the PYC marina
• Access to the members-only Willow Bar Outstation on Sauvie Island
• PYC is a member-run organization. Twice annual membership meetings provide opportunities for the Board of Trustees to present proposals requiring membership approval by majority vote.

MEMBERSHIP INITIATION FEES

APPLICATION PROCESS

Monthly dues.

Moorage fees are charged as the sum of Base Rate per slip or boathouse space ($105.65) plus the square footage occupied @ $.1459 per square foot*. Typically, the total cost for moorage space varies from $180 for a small sailboat to $400 for a very large boathouse.  *Fees for open moorage single slips on concrete rows are 11% higher ($117.27 + $.1622/sf).

A $16.00 electric base fee is charged for all PYC moorage slip assignments.   Electric meters owned by PYC members will be billed for electricity use at the rate of 9 cents per kilowatt used.   City water is included with your moorage fees.

All Boat Owning, Non-Mooring Boat Owning, Senior Boat Owning, and Intermediate Boat Owning, are subject to the monthly $20 Outstation Fee.  This fee is used for maintenance of the Outstation throughout the year. *Does not apply for Surviving spouse, Junior, Non-Resident, Associate, or Senior Associate members.

Current minimum per calendar quarter minimum for food and beverage expenditures is $75. All cruising and in-house charges for food and beverage apply to this minimum. Ship’s Store purchases do not count towards the minimum. Only the unspent portion will be billed at the end of each calendar quarter.  Senior Boat Owning and Senior Associate are required to spend 50% of the standard food and beverage fee. *Does not apply for surviving spouse, junior, or non-residents.

Monaco Yacht Club: An Exclusive Oasis For Marine Lovers

Looking down on the Yacht Club from Monaco’s exclusive seawater Spa, “ Thermes Marins ”, the new club-house really is a magnificent icon of multi-decked architecture – inaugurated in 2014 and designed by internationally renowned architect Lord Norman Foster.

Only in the Principality’s marina could you confuse this giant structure for the yachts around it that it resembles – a yacht mirage with a gorgeous deck with luxurious swimming pool and terraces for dancing. Splendid enough for meetings of the most discerning yacht enthusiasts, including the glitterati and “Three Comma” billionaires that frequent it.

Yachts Beyond the Reach of Mere Mortals

Some of the largest and most expensive yachts in the world dock here to take in the city’s pleasures, particularly during the iconic Monaco Yacht Show. You can wander around marvelling at all of the gadgets designers can inlay on these boats like the 348-foot-long AMADEA one of the largest and most distinctive superyachts in the world with its six distinctive guest decks. Or perhaps gaze at the 365-foot-long TIS, one of the largest and most regal yachts to be launched this year.

These superyachts, like the Yacht Club itself are like private islands and wouldn’t look out of place in a James Bond movie. If billionaires Bernard Arnault or Larry Page or Larry Ellison come calling, Monaco Yacht Club sets the stage perfectly.

Home of the Grimaldi Dynasty

For over 600 years from the 12th century onwards, the Grimaldi stronghold at Port Hercule, including where the Yacht Club now preens itself, was one of the prized naval assets on the Mediterranean. Its strategic location served more than once to change the course of history.

It was around the time of the reign of Charles III of Monaco that the Principality’s reputation as an international haven of luxury and wealth took off. And Charles III had the vision to encourage the development of Monaco as a magnet for international regattas of renown to which the world flocked.

Historic Regatta Heaven

The first of these regattas were held in the bay of Monaco in 1862, so successful that in 1888 the “Société des Régates” was established by Prince Charles III and his son Prince Albert I , affectionately known as the “Oceanographer Prince”.

Almost a century of famous regattas preceded the founding in 1953 by Prince Rainier and presided over by Prince Albert II since 1984, the Yacht Club de Monaco. The Club brings together more than 2000 members from 66 nationalities. Many of the world’s most prestigious private yachts fly the Yacht Club de Monaco’s burgee, testimony to its unique position in the International yachting world.

Prince Albert’s Presidency

In April 1984, with Prince Albert’s Presidency, he developed new international events such as the Primo Cup, the biggest gathering of monotype yachts in the Mediterranean Sea. Prince Albert also put emphasis on classic Yachting with the organization from 1994 of the Monaco Classic Week for vintage and classic yachts, the Prada Challenge for Classic Yachts.

Notably, it was the first visit of Atlantic 2010 (replica of the 1903 three-mast schooner on which Charlie Barr in 1905 set the best time for an Atlantic crossing) to the Principality. Another icon, the SS Delphine (1921) steam-boat made a welcome return. It was aboard this beauty that three world leaders, Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill, negotiated at least part of the 1945 Yalta Agreement.

Yacht Seasons are typically opened with ultra-private concerts at YCM with celebrities like Sir Elton John in 2016, Duran Duran in 2017, and Sting last year. It was yet another global star Lionel Richie singing “All Night Long” this September who delighted the many boat owners and YCM members. “All Night Long” was attended by YCM President, Prince Albert II and a host of international personalities including actor-producer Samuel L. Jackson, basketball legend Magic Johnson, Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba and fashion designer Domenico Dolce, one of the two behind the eponymous brand D&G.

Regatta and Sports Heaven with a Golden Future

The Monaco Yacht Club from its beginnings embraced and has nurtured a prestige Regatta program that has accelerated and taken on new dimensions under Prince Albert’s Presidency.

It is worth mentioning the Primo Cup again as it has quickly established itself as the big meeting that opens the season in the Mediterranean for Europe’s one-design elite. Just a few other examples of stand-out Regattas enjoyed by YCMmembers include:

Monaco Swan One Design,  (9th-13th April 2019) organized in conjunction with the Yacht Club de Monaco,  was the first event in the 2019 Nations Trophy Mediterranean League.

Monaco Globe Week with the IMOCA 60  – 60-foot monohulls being among the fastest modern racing monohulls have raced on a course totalling 1,300 nautical miles embracing some of the most emblematic marks in the Western Mediterranean.

Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series  offers a monthly programme alternating high level regattas and training weekends for onedesigns.

As well as the Primo Cup another innovation worth a double mention here is  Monaco Classic Week. Persuaded that the reading of the past holds keys for the future Prince Albert fostered the creation and coordination during five years of a unique circuit for vintage and classic yachts, the Prada Challenge for Classic Yachts, without forgetting the acquisition of Tuiga in 1995, since becoming the flagship of the YCM. More recently the wave continued with the launching in 2005 of the “La Belle Classe” label.

The whole yachting world continues to look to Monaco to organize its most prestigious events. Within the last 12 months, 200 guests from the America’s Cup community from around the world gathered at the Yacht Club de Monaco to celebrate the launch of  the Prada Cup – the Challenger Selection Series for the 36th America’s Cup  to be presented by Prada in January 2021 in Auckland – deemed as “ the quest for oldest trophy in sport ”, the America’s Cup. Not to forget  World Rowing with the  Prince Albert II Challenge , a 6000m coastal race organised by the Societe Nautique de Monaco.

The Enthusiasm and Promise of Monaco’s Youth at YCM

Looking to the future is the Monaco Sports Academy which provides support to gifted young Monaco sailors and sportsmen taking on the world. The Academy is a close collaboration between the Yacht Club de Monaco, presided by Prince Albert and its General Secretary Bernard d’Alessandri, and Philippe Ghanem who is an active member of the Club. Also founded in 1970 by Prince Rainier III, the Sports Section of Y.C.M. adapts training to youngsters from as young as age six from initiation to competition and at every age.

Look out for the Monaco Optimist Team Race from 9-12 January 2020. The regatta is reserved for 20 teams of young sailors, all under 14. YCM invites the most competitive clubs with emphasis on tactics and above all team-work.

Full of youthful energy and promise is  the Monaco Solar & Energy Boat Challenge  next held on 30 June-4 July 2020. The Yacht Club de Monaco, in collaboration with the International Powerboating Federation (UIM) and Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation organises the Solar & Energy Boat Challenge which is unique in the world.

How to become a new member of the Yacht Club

Anyone wishing to become a member of the Yacht Club de Monaco needs to be introduced by two “sponsors” from YCM. The sponsor’s letter of introduction will explain the applicant’s motives for joining the Club. Prince Albert, President of the Yacht Club, presides over the meetings of the admissions’ committee. The role of the sponsor is essential. The latter, must integrate him into the life of the Yacht Club, accompany him, present him to the other members but also involve him in organized events, whether they be social or sports.

The sponsor also undertakes to ensure that his “protégé” embraces the YCM’s philosophy and values, will actively engage in the Club’s life and keep its reputation at the pinnacle.

The Houston Yacht Club offers a variety of Membership categories with differing initiation fees and different levels of monthly dues.

Senior Membership (all ages eligible)

Senior Member benefits include priority boat slips and Harbor storage, Club programs, and Clubhouse amenities. HYC is a Member-oriented, private yacht club. Only Senior Members may serve as Officers or Trustees.

Junior Membership (18-34 years)

Junior Members are entitled to all privileges of the Club without preference or priority to any other Membership class and may not serve as an Officer or Trustee. Upon the Member’s 35th birthday, the Member converts to a Senior Membership.

Non-Resident Membership – (18 years or older)

This Membership is for those who permanently reside or have a primary residence outside of Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery, and Waller Counties. Non-Residents have no voting privileges, nor slip priority.

Your company can join our affiliate program that provides access to the second floor to entertain business associates, employees or even treat your family to a special dinner. History of Volgograd Oblast

Since the early 1240s, the Lower Volga region became part of the Golden Horde state founded by the Mongolian khan Batu. In the 13th-14th centuries, along the Volga and Akhtuba, there were numerous settlements and major urban centers, the population grew significantly, the local merchants established trade links with Russian principalities, the Italian republics, Egypt, Iran, Central Asia, India, and China.

In the first half of the 15th century, the Golden Horde broke up into a number of independent states including the Kazan and Astrakhan khanates. In the middle of the 16th century, they were conquered by the troops of the Russian Tsar Ivan the Terrible. From this time, colonization and economic development of this region by Russian settlers began.

From the second half of the 16th century, a system of fortress towns was created in the Volga region, built to protect the southeastern borders of the Russian state. The fortress of Tsaritsyn (Volgograd), founded in 1589, was one of these outposts.

Peter the Great visited Tsaritsyn three times. According to his plan, in the 1730s, there was a reconstruction of the Tsaritsyn fortress and the construction of the Tsaritsyn sentry line, which contributed to the settlement of the lands along the rivers of Medveditsa, Ilovl, Volga, and Akhtuba.

More Historical Facts…

In 1765, as a result of two manifestoes of Catherine the Great, who invited people from abroad to settle in Russia, the first foreigners appeared in the region. They were granted a number of benefits, including exemption from recruitment and taxes for 30 years. After it, more than 100 German colonies appeared along the banks of the Volga River.

In the late 18th century, when the Crimea and the Kuban became parts of the Russian Empire, the borders of the state moved far to the south. The Tsaritsyn sentry line was abolished, the Volga Cossack army was liquidated, and the town lost its military-strategic importance. In 1798, Tsaritsyn became a district town of the Saratov province.

Until the second half of the 19th century, the economy of the region was represented exclusively by the agrarian sector (growing grain crops, melon growing), cattle breeding as well as fishing and hunting. In the 1860s-1870s, with the construction of railways, Tsaritsyn turned into the largest transit center of the southeast of the Russian Empire.

In the last quarter of the 19th - early 20th centuries, Tsaritsyn became one of the largest industrial centers of the Volga region. In 1880, the oil industrial town of Nobel was built, which later grew into the largest for the time oil industry complex. The merchants of Tsaritsyn called their town Russian Chicago.

In the late 1920s and throughout the 1930s, industry was the leading branch of the local economy. Old factories were modernized and new enterprises were opened. In April 1925, the city was renamed Stalingrad. Stalingrad oblast, formed in 1936, occupied one of the leading places in the economy of the USSR, and Stalingrad became a major industrial, scientific and cultural center, the southern capital of the country.

During the Second World War, the Stalingrad battle took place on the territory of the region, which played an important role in the defeat of Nazi Germany. As a result of fierce fighting, the city was turned into ruins.

Among the largest economic projects implemented on the territory of the region in the post-war period: the Volga-Don Shipping Canal, the Volzhskaya HPP, aluminum, metalworking and chemical plants, light and food industry enterprises.

In 1961, after the condemnation of Stalin’s cult of personality, Stalingrad was renamed to Volgograd, and the region, respectively, became Volgograd oblast.

Volgograd Oblast - Features

From north to south and from west to east, Volgograd Oblast stretches for more than 400 km. This region has an advantageous geographical position, being the main gateway to the south of Russia with access to Iran, the Caucasus, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan.

Also two main rivers of the European part of Russia, the Volga and the Don, are connected through the Volga-Don Canal here. With its help it is possible to reach the following seas: the Caspian Sea, the White Sea, the Baltic Sea, the Black Sea, and the Sea of Azov.

The climate of the Volgograd region is arid, with a pronounced continentality. The average temperature in January is about minus 8-12 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 22-25 degrees Celsius.

Volgograd Oblast has a high potential of natural resources: hydrocarbon raw materials (oil, condensate, natural gas), chemical (potash, magnesium, sodium salts, phosphorites), cement raw materials for the metallurgical industry, building materials, iron ores, non-ferrous, and rare metals.

The largest cities and towns of Volgograd Oblast are Volgograd (1,001,200), Volzhsky (321,400), Kamyshin (107,000), Mikhailovka (56,300), Uryupinsk (35,500), Frolovo (35,200).

Volgograd Oblast - Economy

The Volgograd region is one of the most economically developed regions of Russia with a balanced economic structure. Diversified agriculture is combined with a diverse industry, oil and natural gas reserves. Two largest navigable rivers flow along the territory of the region, connected by the Volga-Don Canal. Volzhskaya hydroelectric power station is located on the territory of the region.

The main industries are machine building and metalworking (tractors, ships, tower cranes, bearings, equipment for the oil industry, electrical and food industries, drilling, transport and storage, medical and commercial equipment), fuel (oil and gas production), oil refining, chemical industry, ferrous, and non-ferrous metallurgy.

The production of building materials is well developed, as well as textile, woodworking and food industries. Local agriculture is focused on the production of grain, corn, cereals, oilseeds, and vegetable oil, vegetables, fruits, melons.

Important railways, highways, water- and airways cross the territory of the region. The lower Volga and Don connected by the Volga-Don Canal favor freight carrying from the ports of European countries to Africa and the Middle East. The territory of the region is crossed by the federal highway M6 “Moscow - Astrakhan”.

Attractions of Volgograd Oblast

Volgograd Oblast is a relatively popular tourist destination in Russia, especially during a long and warm summer. Such small rivers of the region as the Khoper, Medveditsa, Ilovlya, Akhtuba are famous for their picturesque valleys.

There are seven natural parks in the region: the Volga-Akhtuba floodplain, the Donskoy, the Nizhnehopersky, the Ust-Medveditsky, the Tsimlyansk sands, the Shcherbakovsky, the Eltonsky.

The main places of interest located outside Volgograd:

• Volga-Akhtuba floodplain, which begins immediately behind the Volga hydroelectric power station, near which the Akhtuba separates from the Volga, a great place for fishing;
• Lake Elton - one of the most interesting natural sites on the territory of the Volgograd region, the largest salt lake in Europe (152 sq. km.). The name came from the Kazakh “Altyn-Nur”, which means “Golden Lake”;
• Floating islands on the lakes Bolshoye Babye and Maloye Babye near the village of Bolshoy Babinsky in Alekseevsky district;
• Archedin-Don Sands - a state botanical nature monument located on the territory of Serafimovichsky and Frolovsky districts, one of the largest sand massifs in the Volgograd region;
• Cretaceous mountains located on the right bank of the Ilovlya River, starting from the village of Kondrashi and ending in the area of Kamenniy brod;
• Sarpinsky Island - the largest river island in Europe located on the Volga River opposite Volgograd, the width - 18 km, the length - 20 km. This natural complex is the central part of the natural zone of Volgograd;
• Park-Museum of the Russian Fairy Tale named after A.S. Pushkin in the village of Kirovets in Sredneakhtubinsky district;
• Ethnographic Museum of Cossack Folk Architecture and Life located on the bank of the Ilovlya River, the 79th kilometer of the Volgograd-Moscow highway;
• Military-Memorial Cemetery of Rossoshka - a burial place of German and Soviet soldiers;
• Local History Museum in Kamyshin;
• Volga-Don Shipping Canal - an architectural ensemble included in the list of historical and cultural monuments of the Volgograd region;
• Monument to the Goat, Museum of Local Lore and Art in Uryupinsk.
