Matching Professional Yacht Crew with Great Yachts

You found our website – that means you must be looking for a job on a yacht. If that includes a ton of travel, working with a great team, getting out on the ocean, working your bum off and showing the owners and guests a great time – you are in the right place!

So, who are our clients? They own motor yachts from about 30 meters to 80 meters. They are private, floating luxury homes, travelling vacation spots, second (third, fourth, fifth) homes, entertainment venues. Our clients value the privacy and freedom that luxury yachts offer. Some cruise the traditional Mediterranean – Caribbean route, others slip through New England, or the US West Coast, many take extended trips into the Pacific to explore the islands of the Galapagos, the Far East, and a few truly adventurous owners take the yacht to the Antarctic! Really, the only limit to travel is the imagination!

They hire professional Captains, properly experienced, well certified. Proper Officers with a long-term view of their career. Those Captains, in turn, hire happy, hardworking, professional, fun crew (yes even the Engineers) who are looking to put in the work and have a great time working with a team of like-minded yacht crew.

We can see why owners and guests love yachting – why do the crew?

This is full time work. Not a summer gig, not a gap year, not even freelance work. The expectations are high, but the rewards are outstanding. Solid wages (feel free to check out our Crew page for an idea of what that means), health benefits, worldwide travel, food prepared by a private Chef, exploring exotic ports of call, windsurfing the Caribbean, scuba in the Maldives, swimming…well, everywhere!

And when the time comes to move on, or move up, your time aboard has prepared you to choose where you go next – larger yachts, smaller yachts, even an extraordinary span of land-based positions where your honed skills are truly valued. The sky is the limit!

Sounds perfect…maybe even too good to be true!

If you have never worked on a yacht and do not know what to expect, that would make sense, but our clients are seeking well experienced candidates. Each yacht has a training program that will both sharpen your general skills and give you great confidence on how the individual program is run. With each of our clients, there is room for growth – training, learning how to give and take constructive criticism, management skills.

Even skills that may not, at first glance, fall into the realm of what you might expect can become important. Water Sports (Wind Surf, Kite Board, E-Foil), diving with guests, even deep-sea fishing experience are all those additional skills that our clients love to hear about.

Proper yacht crew are very physically active, but we never lose focus of the fact that this hard work is also fun – we are in the business of supplying the world’s most luxurious vacations, in a safety environment. That means care and excitement are properly blended.

Can it get a bit stuffy at times – yes. When a king or queen comes aboard it is not uncommon to have to put on the formal uniform. We do say “sir” and “madame,” we learn silver service, we learn to observe and anticipate the needs of guests. We treat the owner’s parents like the most important people on earth. We also crack a smile. We laugh out loud. We jump in the water with the kids. We hold the hand of that guest who is just not sure about the jet skis. We produce the most exquisite vacations on earth.

What about the people you work with – the rest of the crew on the yacht? They are people similar to you – happy, outgoing, hardworking. You rely on each other. You know they are fulfilling their promise to you, you are fulfilling your promises to them. But they are also different. They come from literally every country on earth. Different cultures, foods, backgrounds, languages. You learn from them – they learn from you. You create bonds with these people that truly last your entire life.

This is yachting – we work hard and we have a great time doing it!

Yacht Crew For Hire

Large Private Yacht

Along with providing premiere household staffing services, we also specialize in international yacht crew placement, brokerage, and chartering.

Headed by seasoned yacht industry professionals, our Yacht Crew Agency provides experienced, qualified, and formally trained yacht crew.

Our worldwide access and network of 5-star crew members ensure our placements are met with longevity. We have staff on our roster equipped to work on both internationally and domestically registered vessels, motor yachts as well as sailing yachts, and vessels of all sizes, including 180 ft + mega yachts. We staff short-term charters, as well as full-time year-round positions.  Contact us today to hire yacht crew.

Yacht Crew Positions

Yacht Crew

We have an extensive roster of stewards and stewardesses, deckhands, engineers, mates, chefs, and captains. All yacht staff must have a superb understanding of hospitality, excellent communication skills, and be unwavering in their discretion and confidentiality; many are multilingual.

The captain’s primary duty on any yacht is the safe manning and operation of the ship. Every crew member falls under the captain’s ultimate command. They will also plan the vessel’s route and itinerary, respond to changes in weather, oversee all repairs, upgrades and refits, make decisions regarding the crew, develop and adhere to a budget, and negotiate with harbor officials at all ports. This is one of the most critical hires you can make for your vessel.

The 1 st mate (sometimes known as 1 st officer or chief mate) works directly under the captain to support the yacht. The 1 st mate will assist the captain with administrative and safety duties, manage the deck crew and maintain crew discipline, arrange regular safety drills, and stand in for captain in his absence.

This staff member will fill in for the first officer as necessary. They will keep charts and publications up to date, monitors navigation and radio equipment, undertake bridge watches, and may also be the designated security, safety, or medical officer depending on the size of the yacht.

The engineer is responsible for the safety of the engine room, as well as all mechanical and electrical maintenance onboard. The engineer will supervise engine repairs and rehauls, train other engineers as needed, and coordinate the maintenance schedule for all major systems aboard, including HVAC etc.

The deckhand ensures the exterior of the yacht is in pristine condition and working order. They typically also clean and maintain any water toys onboard, including jet skis etc. They may also assist the bosun and mate in maintenance projects, including sanding and taping for varnishing, painting, caulking, and filling.

Chief Steward(ess)

The chief steward(ess) is the senior crew member working in the steward’s department of a vessel; they report directly to the captain. The chief steward trains and manages any lower-ranking stews under his or her supervision and is ultimately responsible for the interior of the vessel and overall level of hospitality onboard.

  Steward(ess)

The stewards and stewardesses are responsible for attending to all guests onboard and general upkeep of the yacht interior. They will handle food and drink service, including bar service and silver service, oversee the cleaning of all accommodations and cabin preparations, arrange flowers, obtain local currency, and arrange trips and transport for guests.

A purser is more common on large and mega yachts. The purser will handle HR, payroll, accounting, bookkeeping, and general crew management. They will work with the various heads of departments to ensure smooth, efficient management of financial matters and purchasing and provisioning logistics.

As with a typical private chef, a yacht chef will manage all food ordering, stocking, and preparation. The chef will plan and execute guest and crew meals, manage food safety and storage standards aboard the vessel, keep up to date galley and food inventory, manage galley staff, and adhere to the budget.

Families may choose to employ a second nanny in place of or in addition to their full-time nanny to manage and care for children while on board the yacht. This person may act as backup if 24/7 care is needed or may simply be more experienced as a travel nanny. Many travel nannies are multi-lingual and can plan educational excursions and activities for children in your intended destinations or onboard the vessel.

Testimonials.

“This is a wonderful agency!!I have a seven-year-old daughter and the team at BAHS has helped me with different nannies for the different stages of her development and, tutors and occasional staffing needs. Once you are part of the BAHS family they will truly work with you to support your family and get you the best possible staff – and always make you feel understood and with respect for your privacy.”

– SR, Client

“I recently utilized this agency to help me find a nanny for my six year old son.  I can’t say enough good things about the quality of the service at BAHS.  They really listened to my needs, and only sent me candidates who met my criteria and who were really interested in working with my family.  The agency’s responsiveness, attention to detail and ability to be discrete was top notch.  While I hope our current nanny stays with us as long as we need, I would use this agency again if I ever have additional staffing needs.”

-CA, Client

“I cannot recommend this agency enough. I am a British Nanny with twenty seven years of experience so I have encountered many agencies both here and London during my working life. It did take time for me to find the right position as I am choosy, but each time I decided a job wasn’t right for me they didn’t criticize my reasoning but just persevered in finding what would eventually be the perfect fit for me.”

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • What sort of experience does Galatea Recruitment look for when placing jobs? The more yachting experience the better! We work with both Motor and Sail Yachts and try to find the position that suits you best. The more qualifications and strong recommendations you have under your belt – the better! If you are new to the industry, please read the next question.
  • Can I apply for a position or send you a CV if I have no experience? Of course! 'Greenies' as they are often referred to in the yachting world, are more than welcomed into the industry, however it could take slightly longer to find the ideal job role for them. These roles often include: Deckhand, Steward/ess, Crew Chef and Assistant Engineer. If you are new, make sure to emphasise any skills that you have that translate to the position you are hoping to land e.g. if you want to be a stewardess but you have hospitality or cleaning experience then make sure to mention this. For all roles, please make sure you have your Medical fitness (ENG1) STCW-95 Basic Training qualification and more job specific qualifications if needed when applying. For any further questions please email us at: [email protected]
  • How many crew will be on each yacht? Mid- range yachts usually have between 4 to 12 crew and up to 12 passengers. The larger yachts can have 30+ crew on board at one time. Crew can also work on rotation, so you may be part of an overall larger crew.
  • How long can I work on a yacht for? Contracts are usually seasonal or all year round. There are also dayworker agreements and temporary contracts. It all depends on exactly what the yacht is needing at that time.
  • Should I work on a private or charter yacht? It depends what sort of role you prefer. A private yacht is used purely for the leisure of a yacht owner and guests. This usually means that the owner is on board for less amount of time than a charter would be, usually meaning a little more downtime. However, you could have an owner who is on board a lot. A charter yacht is rented out to guests who are usually HNWI. On a charter yacht, it is usually fast paced and involves quick turn arounds and sometimes working weeks in a row with no days off. However, crew may receive extra gratuities for providing excellent service making the extra effort worth while.
  • Where does the crew sleep on the yacht? The crew sleep in the crew quarters. These are usually based at the stern of the boat with a compact with a practical layout. Sharing a cabin is common with usually 2, sometimes more crew members to a cabin.
  • What can I do to be more desirable to hire? A number of things can help. If you are new, try and get some day work to help with experience. Captains and Yachts look for loyal crew or/and crew with great recommendations. Make sure to have your Medical fitness (ENG1) STCW-95 Basic Training A positive, can-do attitude Clean and professional personal presentation Make sure to have a professional looking CV with a headshot photo and information clearly laid out. Try and make it fit all on one page, if not two pages maximum. Have around 3 written references with updated contact details for verification. Have a file ready with all your current documentation (CV, references, certificates, passport and visas, Medical Fitness also known as ENG1) to send to us or a yacht
  • Where are yachts based and travel to? Typically, vessels often travel the Mediterranean or the US East Coast in the summer. In the winter yachts often cruise the Caribbean. SE Asia and the Middle East are becoming increasingly popular with yachts. It is not always the case that a yacht will do a dual season. Some yachts may just stay in one location all year round and during the 'off-season' carry out all their maintenance works.

Superyacht guests were celebrating Mike Lynch’s acquittal when disaster struck

G uests were celebrating the acquittal of Mike Lynch , the British tech entrepreneur, on the superyacht Bayesian when the vessel sank off the coast of Italy.

One person has died and six others, including four British nationals, are missing after the Bayesian capsized at around 5am on Monday. Mr Lynch is among the missing after the boat sank in a tornado off the village of Porticello, in Palermo, Sicily.

One mother aboard the yacht, who survived the sinking, said she had held her baby child aloft to save her from drowning.

Mr Lynch had gathered guests from Clifford Chance, the legal firm, and Invoke Capital, his own company, after being cleared in June of fraud over the multi billion-dollar sale of Autonomy.

He was found not guilty on all counts of an accusation of inflating the value of the company, which he sold to the US tech giant Hewlett-Packard for £8.6 billion in 2011.

The father of a Clifford Chance lawyer who survived the sinking confirmed that the trip had been intended as a celebration of the court victory .

Lin Ronald said his daughter Ayla, 36, is a lawyer who was part of the successful legal team who were invited to go sailing

Mr Ronald said: “I have texted with my daughter and she hasn’t given me any updates about missing personnel or saved personnel. She has only said to me that there are deaths, and she and her partner are alive.

There were 15 survivors, rescued by the Italian coast guard from a life raft put to sea as the 183ft yacht went down.

Among the survivors was a one-year-old British baby called Sofia who was saved by her mother, named by one Italian newspaper as Charlotte Golunski.

Ms Golunski, an Oxford graduate and a senior associate at Invoke, fought to prevent her child from drowning.

She told Republicca: “I held her afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning. It was all dark. In the water I couldn’t keep my eyes open. I screamed for help but all I could hear around me was the screams of others.”

Mother and baby were saved when they were able to get on to a lifeboat with others.

Speaking from the Giovanni di Cristina paediatric hospital in Palermo, she said she “can still hear her little girl crying in her ears as they floated in the waves and their holiday sailing boat sank”. She said she was amazed that the child, who had just turned one, had emerged from the water unscathed.

The violent storm had struck without warning. The Bayesian had been moored offshore from Porticello. It had sailed to Porticello from Cefalu, another historic seaside village on Sicliy’s northern shore.

Pietro Asciutto, a fisherman who watched the disaster unfold from his home in Porticello, told a local news agency: “I was at home when the tornado hit. I immediately closed all the windows.

“Then I saw the boat. It had only one mast, it was very large. I saw it sink suddenly.

“I think the tornado came from Porticello. Shortly after I went down to the Bay of Santa Nicolicchia to get a better look at what was happening. The boat was still floating, then suddenly it disappeared. I saw it sink with my own eyes.”

As the yacht began to sink, a member of the crew fired a distress flare, its red trail alerting boats nearby.

Karsten Borner, a captain on a Dutch-flagged sailing ship also moored off Porticello, went to the rescue, pulling survivors from the lifeboat. He had at first struggled to keep his own yacht under control as the storm hit.

“This morning we got this strong hurricane gust and we had to start the engine to keep the ship in an angled position, and we watched the ship behind us not to touch them and we managed to keep the ship in position, and after the storm was over, we noticed that the ship behind us was gone,” said Mr Borner.

“And then we saw a red flare, so my first mate and I went to the position, and we found this life raft drifting.

“Fifteen people inside. Four people were injured, three heavily injured, and we brought them to our ship. Then we communicated with the coast guard, and after some time the coast guard came and later picked up injured people.”

Emergency divers, according to the local rescue centre in Sicily, found wreckage at a depth of 187ft, where “through the portholes they saw corpses”.

Vigili del Fuoco, Italy’s fire and rescue service, confirmed the body of a male had been recovered from the yacht. In a post on X, formerly Twitter, it said the “lifeless body of a man [has been] recovered from the wreck by the divers.”

It posted the statement alongside a clip of the rescue effort with footage showing helicopters, boats and divers carrying out a search operation.

Investigators will now try to work out why the Bayesian sank when other ships in the vicinity remained afloat. The yacht had the world’s tallest aluminium mast at almost 250ft.

It is owned by Revtom, a company registered on the Isle of Man. According to company documents filed in April, Revtom’s legal owner is Angela Bacares, Mr Lynch’s wife.

A former chief stewardess who had previously crewed the Bayesian said the boat had always previously withstood the choppiest of seas.

Monica Jensen, 48, told The Telegraph: “It seems a bit strange. We have been in bad weather with it, crossed the Atlantic. It’s been all over. These things definitely don’t happen very often.”

Ms Jensen worked on the superyacht from November 2018 to October 2020 for a private owner, and said it had since been sold. She was with it on two Caribbean seasons and cruised around Italy, Malta, Greece and the Balearics.

Shen said the crew would have been well-drilled on the evacuation process, adding: “You can’t work on a boat without the right certificates, training and you do drills monthly.”

In a statement, the Italian coast guard said: “This morning at about 5am, following a violent gale, a 56-metre yacht named Bayesian and flying the UK flag sank off Porticello.

“The first shipwrecked were rescued by a boat in the immediate vicinity and brought ashore by four coast guard vessels, which promptly responded to the scene from Porticello, Termini Imerese and Palermo.

“Initial information received from the yacht crew indicated that 22 people, 10 crew members and 12 passengers, were on board the yacht. There are currently 15 people rescued and seven missing, one crew member and six passengers, of British, American and Canadian nationality.

“Of the people recovered, eight were transported to local hospitals. The vessel is reported to have sunk on a seabed of about 50 metres. The search continues unabated with naval, air and underwater resources, including the Messina coast guard diving unit.”

Bartolomeo Lo Coco, who owns the Tosto Chiosco cafe in Porticello, said it was common for rental yachts and boats to sail through the fishing village, adding that the captain should not be blamed for what had occurred because the weather had been so unpredictable.

“This was a terrible misfortune that no one could have foreseen. It is nobody’s fault, the captain should not be blamed,” he said. “We are in mourning here, all of us are in mourning. We have never seen anything like this, ever. There is a very serious tragedy.”

His kiosk, which serves snacks and sandwiches, overlooks the water in Porticello. He said the tornado had not only caused the tragic accident, but also widespread damage in the port.

He added: “This wasn’t a thunderstorm, this was a whirlwind. It happened all of a sudden. There is a lot of damage here.  Boats were dislodged from their moorings and restaurant tables were broken within minutes and sent flying several metres.”

How sinking of luxury yacht off Sicily unfolded

private yacht crew agencies

One man has died and six people are missing after a luxury yacht sank in freak weather conditions off the coast of Sicily.

The 56m British-flagged Bayesian was carrying 22 people - 12 passengers and 10 crew - when a heavy storm that created waterspouts struck early on Monday.

Fifteen people were rescued and a search operation for those unaccounted for - who include the British tech tycoon Mike Lynch - is continuing.

Here is what we know about the tragedy so far and how it unfolded.

What happened to the yacht?

Map of Porticello and Palermo in Sicily

The Bayesian was struck by a sudden and powerful storm in the early hours of Monday morning, witnesses say.

It was reportedly anchored to the sea bed outside the harbour at Porticello, a small fishing village to the east of Palermo, when what the Italian coastguard described as a "violent storm" hit.

The storm was so fierce that it caused waterspouts, or rotating columns of air and mist, to appear over the sea.

The vessel disappeared beneath the water at about 05:00 local time (04:00 BST).

A doctor treating survivors said the ship "capsized within a few minutes".

Witnesses told Italian news agency Ansa that the Bayesian’s anchor was down when the storm struck, causing the 72m (236ft) aluminium mast to break in half and the ship to lose its balance and sink.

However, divers on the search and rescue team have said the ship was "practically intact" on the seabed, raising questions as to whether the mast was broken.

The ship's unusually tall mast may have contributed to its sinking, according to Matthew Schanck, chair of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council.

He told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that the mast acted almost like a sail in the strong wind "especially with it being so high".

The extreme winds could have caught the mast and pushed the yacht over, he said.

Karsten Borner, captain of a nearby boat, said after the storm had passed, the crew noticed the yacht that had been behind them had disappeared.

"We saw a red flare, so my first mate and I went to the position, and we found this life raft drifting," he told Reuters.

His crew took on board some survivors, including three who were seriously injured.

Another witness, Fabio Cefalù, captain of a trawler, said he was about to go out on a fishing trip when he saw flashes of lightning so he stayed in the harbour.

"At about 04:15 we saw a flare in the sea," he said, according to the EVN news agency reports.

"We waited for this waterspout to pass. After 10 minutes we went out to the sea and we saw cushions and all the rest of the boat [that had sunk], and everything which was on the deck, at sea. However, we did not see any people in the sea.”

Another fisherman described seeing the yacht sinking "with my own eyes".

Speaking to the newspaper Giornale di Sicilia, the witness said he was at home when the tornado hit.

"Then I saw the boat, it had only one mast, it was very big," he said.

Shortly afterwards he went down to the Santa Nicolicchia bay in Porticello to get a better look at what was happening.

He added: "The boat was still floating, then all of a sudden it disappeared. I saw it sinking with my own eyes."

One of the survivors, British tourist Charlotte Golunski, told Italian newspaper La Repubblica how she held up her one-year-old daughter Sofia to stop her from drowning.

She said the two of them and her partner James survived only because they were up on deck when the yacht sank.

They were woken by “thunder, lightning and waves that made our boat dance”, and it felt like "the end of the world" before they were thrown into the water.

Charlotte said: "For two seconds I lost my daughter in the sea, then quickly hugged her amid the fury of the waves."

She added: "I held her afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning.

"It was all dark. In the water I couldn't keep my eyes open. I screamed for help, but all I could hear around me was the screams of others."

What is the latest with the search?

Six passengers remain missing and the Palermo coastguard says the search and rescue operation is continuing "incessantly".

The search began on Monday and specialist divers have been working at the site since early on Tuesday morning.

One diver told Italian media the yacht was "practically intact" on its side at the ocean's basin, about 50m below the surface.

The ship's hull is obstructed with furniture and various objects, the Italian fire and rescue service has said.

Divers are looking for ways to access the yacht's cabins, but they have just 10 minutes to search on each dive before they need to return to the surface, the Italian news agency Ansa has reported.

A 1cm thick glass window is also being considered as an entry point.

Francesco Venuto, a spokesperson for Sicily's civil protection agency, told the BBC on Monday rescue teams fear the bodies of those missing "must be" in the boat.

"We've been searching all day with helicopters and boats, we've found nothing. That wouldn't make sense. In these conditions, we should have found something by now," he added.

A specialist caving search and rescue diving team arrived from Rome on Monday, hoping to "achieve results" either during the night or by Tuesday morning at the latest, the director general of Sicily's civil protection agency, Salvatore Cocina, said.

On Monday, the UK's Marine Accident Investigation Branch sent a team of four investigators to carry out a preliminary assessment of the Bayesian's sinking, the BBC understands.

Who was on board?

PA Mike Lynch

There were 22 people on board when the storm hit, including 12 passengers and 10 crew.

The body of one man has been recovered. He has not been formally identified, but the Palermo coastguard said he was the ship's cook. His nationality has not been confirmed.

Among the six people still missing is 59-year-old tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, known by some as the "British Bill Gates".

Mr Lynch founded software giant Autonomy in 1996 and was awarded an OBE for services to enterprise in 2006.

In June, he was cleared of conducting a massive fraud relating to an $11bn (£8.64bn) sale to US company Hewlett Packard.

Afterwards, he told the BBC in an interview he had been able to prove his innocence only because he had the wealth to pay the enormous legal fees required.

The other missing people include Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah, Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer, and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo.

Mr Lynch's wife Angela Bacares is among the 15 people to have been rescued, with eight of those receiving treatment in hospital, the Italian coastguard said.

Charlotte Golunski, her husband and daughter Sofia were also rescued and were unharmed, but taken to hospital for check-ups.

She said they had been on the yacht with a group of colleagues.

The daily Il Giornale di Sicilia newspaper reported the vessel had mostly British passengers on board, but also people from New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Ireland and British-French citizens.

A doctor based in Palermo said the "very tired" survivors were "constantly asking about the missing people".

Dr Domenico Cipolla told Reuters that one woman he treated described the trip as a "corporate holiday", with some of those on board "very young".

"There were a lot of work colleagues, friends, a few husbands, wives, or a couple of friends who had joined in," he adds.

Facebook Charlotte Golunski

What is a waterspout and why do they form?

A waterspout is similar to a tornado and can form over oceans, seas or large lakes.

The western half of the Mediterranean has experienced severe storms since the middle of last week.

Through Sunday night and into Monday morning, a zone of bad weather passed by the north coast of Sicily.

BBC Weather forecaster Matt Taylor said: "A waterspout is a tornado that has occurred over water rather than land.

"They can form during intense storms, on the base of cumulonimbus/thunder clouds.

"Turbulence, and the wind blowing in slightly different directions around the cloud, can cause rotation under the base of the cloud and the spout to form.

"Like tornadoes, they bring powerful winds, but instead of picking up dust and debris they cause a water mist around the column of rotating air."

What is the Bayesian, and who owns it?

EPA-EFE/REX/Shutterstock The Bayesian yacht

The superyacht can accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites, and is listed for rent for up to €195,000 (£166,000) a week.

It was built in 2008 by Italian company Perini Navi.

The Bayesian's registered owner is listed as Revtom Ltd, which is based on the Isle of Man.

The yacht's name is understood to derive from the Bayesian theory, which Mr Lynch's PhD thesis and the software that made his fortune was based on.

Mr Lynch's wife Ms Bacares is named as the sole legal owner of Revtom, which is registered in the Isle of Man.

The Bayesian completed a number of sailings in recent days, calling at various ports in Sicily, according to ship-tracking website VesselFinder.

A spokesperson for Camper and Nicholsons International, the firm that manages the 2008-built boat, told BBC Verify: "Our priority is assisting with the ongoing search and providing all necessary support to the rescued passengers and crew."

Morgan Stanley International Chair Among Missing After Yacht Sinks

  • Order Reprints

The chairman of Morgan Stanley International, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife are among those missing after a yacht sank off the coast of Sicily, the UK insurer Hiscox said Tuesday.

"We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic event," Aki Hussain, Group CEO of Hiscox, which Bloomer has also chaired since 2023, said in a statement.

"Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular our Chair, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife Judy, who are among the missing, and with their family as they await further news from this terrible situation."

Six people, including UK tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his teenage daughter, are missing following the yacht capsizing early Monday.

The British-flagged Bayesian, which had 22 people aboard including 10 crew, was anchored some 700 metres from port before dawn Monday when it was struck by a waterspout, a sort of mini tornado.

Bloomer, 70, has led a number of financial services organisations during his decades-spanning career.

He was a partner at Arthur Andersen before joining British firm Prudential plc in 1995, initially as its chief financial officer and then taking the role of CEO from 2000 to 2005.

He was then an operating partner at Cerberus Capital Management, the United States private equity and alternative investor, between 2006 and 2012.

Described as a seasoned board director, occupying various roles, Bloomer had been chair of Morgan Stanley International since 2016, according to his LinkedIn profile.
