UK Boat Market update Summer 2024- Winning or Losing?

Everyday customers and dealers ask me- How is the Boat Market?

It's the £1m (or more) question, the answer changes daily and this is what makes the boat market so interesting.

So here goes...(and remember this is just my humble opinion based on the brands we sell)

New Cruisers are selling well. In fact the more expensive the boat is - the better it is. For example, we have just sold a New Fairline Squadron 68 and Fairline Phantom 65 and so the next delivery is August 2025. Normally at this time of year- we would have 2 or 3 New Fairlines in stock. We have one - a lovely 3 week old Fairline Targa 45 Open, in Calador, Mallorca and we don't get another new Fairline (that is unsold) until September!

If we move down the price range to Parker and Searay, then it really changes. It changes because the cost of living is affecting these buyers more. It is taking twice as long to sell a boat in this price range even if the price is really attractive. If you have a boat like this that you want to sell then I advise a part-exchange with your dealer or be very patient.

If we move to used boats then it is a much simpler story. If it's an out and out sportsboat then it is very slow (a buyers market) but if you have a cruiser of any sort then you are in luck. The market wants these and used cruisers are selling at a steady rate from £40k to £4m. Again the more expensive and bigger and newer it is the better ! Another example; we have sold 2 cruisers in the 65'-70' (£1m to £2m) bracket, per month for the last few months.

In summary, it's a massive mixed bag but if you are selling then always speak to your trusted dealer for advice - he or she will know exactly what's going on today and everyday and at the moment the market is moving so quickly - their advice is invaluable and that will make you a winner in the boat market.

My husband and I are the new owners of a Jeanneau 53 that was listed by Ancasta Barcelona. Starting in April 2025, we plan to sail 7 months out of the year in The Mediterranean and work 5 months here in The Netherlands. We were looking for our next boat and had decided on a three-cabin flybridge. Ancasta Chichester was advertising a 1999 Princess 460 which looked like it could fit the bill, so we made an appointment to view. After several months of looking and two failed surveys, I have just completed the purchase of my first boat, a Jeanneau Merry Fisher 795. As a newcomer to boating I have to admit my first impression of boat brokers was pretty poor (compared to other industries I deal with) - descriptions were definitely on the optimistic side, boats were untidy, dirty and generally poorly presented. No excuses, just very poor sales and I would be careful who to list my boat with in the future. Then I came across Ancasta (Leo Walters) who shone bright like a beacon. The description of the boat was accurate, minor faults highlighted and extra pictures provided on request. Communications with Ancasta have been excellent, the boat was very well presented for inspection and after sales Ancasta remained interested to ensure my experience was positive. I wouldn't hesitate going to Ancasta for another purchase and if you are thinking of selling a boat, consider using Ancasta, you will get better service and value for money than many other brokers out there. And as a buying customer I would feel confident buying through them so you would be more likely to sell to me!

Woman killed in horror Canary Islands shark attack while sailing on catamaran

A woman has died after being attacked by a shark on a catamaran as she was rushed to a hospital in the Canary Islands.

The 30-year-old German lost her fight for life in a Spanish Air Force helicopter as she was being evacuated to a Gran Canaria hospital.

She was officially pronounced dead after arriving at Doctor Negrin Hospital in the Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas yesterday night.

She is said to have had her leg bitten off by the shark as she was on a catamaran in international waters 278 miles south-west of Gran Canaria’s airport and around 110 miles east of the city of Dakhla in the disputed territory of Western Sahara which is currently occupied by Morocco.

The catamaran she was a crew member of has been named as British-flagged vessel Dalliance Chichester, which had left the Spanish holiday island on September 14.

Spanish Coastguards are said to have informed their Moroccan counterparts as well as UK coastguards because of the origin of the catamaran.

But according to local reports Moroccan authorities refused to transfer the injured woman to Rabat for emergency medical treatment. The unnamed woman was pronounced dead yesterday just after 11pm after going into cardiac arrest in the Spanish military chopper The shark attack is understood to have happened around 4pm the same day.

In June, shark sightings shuttered several Spanish resorts, with one forced to close just hours after local officials gave tourists the greenlight to return.

Lifeguards ordered bathers out of the water at Melenara Beach on Gran Canaria’s east coast after a police drone spotted a hammerhead shark off the beach.

The neighbouring Salinetas beach quickly followed, with Playa de San Agustín close behind, as lifeguards were seen hoisting a red flag at the spot just two hours later when a tourist photographed the tell-tale fin of a shark sticking out of the water. One of the shark appearances was reportedly spotted by a tourist near a restaurant overlooking the sea called Balcon de San Augustin. Red Cross officials later confirmed they had also seen it.

Starmer hails Italy success targeting 'vile' human trafficking trade across the Med at source in North Africa

Sir Keir Starmer has hailed Italy's "dramatic" reduction in migrants risking their lives crossing the Mediterranean to reach the southern European country.

The Prime Minister stressed that the fall of around two thirds in the number of migrants embarking on this sea route looks to be the result of "upstream" work.

Sir Keir, who had flown to Rome for talks with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, also did not rule out an Italian-style asylum claims’ processing system in Albania.

Asked how the UK could replicate Italy's Albania deal, the Prime Minister told broadcasters in Rome: "I'm here to have discussions, here at this co-ordination centre and with the Prime Minister (Giorgia Meloni) about how we deal with unlawful migration.

"Here there's been some quite dramatic reductions. So I want to understand how that came about.

"It looks as though that's down to the upstream work that's been done in some of the countries where people are coming from."

He added: "I've long believed, by the way, that prevention and stopping people traveling in the first place is one of the best ways to deal with this particular issue.

"So I am very interested to know how that upstream work went, looking, of course, at other schemes, looking forward to my bilateral with the prime minister this afternoon, but we've already got a shared intent to work together on this trade, this vile trade, of pushing people across borders."

Earlier, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper had confirmed that Britain is looking at an Italian-style asylum claims’ processing scheme in Albania, as more migrants are dying in desperate attempts to cross the Channel to reach Britain.

The Home Secretary stressed that the focus of the Government’s actions was currently on smashing the criminal gangs behind the human trafficking trade.

But she also confirmed that the UK and Italy are seeking to co-operate on multiple fronts.

Ms Cooper told BBC Breakfast: "There are four different things that the Italians are doing that we're interested in.

"The first is the work that they are doing around organised immigration crime. That's the work that we are substantially gearing up, where we will be doing a huge technology upgrade as well, and where we want to work with Italy, with Germany, with other European countries, with France as well.

"The second thing they're doing is they're working with other countries upstream to prevent people leaving North Africa in the first place...working with Tunisia, we think we should be part of those international co-operations as well.

"The third thing they're doing is major returns. So they're speeding up returns for those who don't have a right to be there. We've been doing that through the summer as well, so we've had a substantial increase in returns for people who don't have a right to be in the UK, because the rules need to be respected and enforced.

"The fourth thing they're doing is the Albania programme, but that hasn't started yet, so we'll need to see what that does. It's very different from the Rwanda partnership that the UK government had, and we'll have to see how that plays out."

But Ms Cooper stressed that Italy's planned third-country processing deal with Albania is "very, very different" from the previous UK government's Rwanda scheme.

The Home Secretary told Good Morning Britain: "It's very, very different. So the arrangement that they have in place - and look, it's not working yet, so we don't know how it will play out - but it is a very, very different approach.

"First of all, this is Italian processing taking place in Albania. It has UNHCR oversight, so it is being monitored to make sure that it meets international standards.

"It's being done in cooperation between those two countries, and what they're actually doing is looking at those people who arrive in Italy, who have come from predominantly safe countries, and they're using it as a way to try and fast-track decisions and returns.

"Now we think there is another way we can fast-track decisions and returns for people who arrive from predominantly safer countries.

"We should be fast-tracking those cases. We should be making sure you don't have people spending years in the asylum system, which ends up being hugely costly, hugely chaotic. That's the system we've inherited."

Ms Cooper also told how former Met Police chief Martin Hewitt is to play a key role leading Britain’s fight to make migration crime gangs behind cross- Channel crossings “pay the price” for the impact of their human trafficking trade, including rising fatalities.

Ahead of the talks with Ms Meloni, Sir Keir said Mr Hewitt, a former chair of the National Police Chiefs’ Council and ex-Assistant Commissioner at Scotland Yard, would run a new Border Security Command which would be empowered to lead joint investigations with other countries.

Mr Hewitt also oversaw the UK’s enforcement of lockdown laws during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Speaking on Monday morning, Ms Cooper said: “Martin Hewitt who was a former police chief and former army officer has huge experience around law enforcement.

“He will lead the new Border Security Command which is bringing together Border Force , the National Crime Agency, police forces, intelligence and security agencies, but also crucially working with European law enforcement in order to go after the criminal gangs and to make sure that they pay the price.

“They are getting away with this at the moment.

“It’s deeply damaging.”

On Sunday, French authorities said eight people had died trying to cross the Channel after their boat got into difficulty, bringing the death toll in attempted crossings to 46 since the start of the year.
