Sea Eagle II: The inside story of the world’s largest aluminium sailing yacht

Rupert Holmes talks to the build and design teams behind the 81m Royal Huisman flagship Sea Eagle II, which recently completed her sea trials off the coast of the Netherlands

Royal Huisman has an enviable track record of producing superlative sailing superyachts , with hundreds of projects completed to date. Yet the latest vessel to leave the shipyard is extraordinary even by these standards. She is the world’s largest aluminium yacht and is one of the top ten biggest sailing yachts ever built. 

Sea Eagle II is a magnificent 81m/266ft three-masted Panamax schooner, created by the same Dykstra and Mark Whiteley Design collaboration that produced the stunning 56m/186ft Royal Huisman ketch Aquarius just over a year ago. 

Her very experienced owner has sailed all his life and spent a lot of time at sea. “ Sailing around the world in the weekends is a phrase often used to outline his days on board,” says Royal Huisman project manager Arjo Spans. He is also a repeat client – the original Sea Eagle is a 43m/143ft Frers/Rhoades Young design launched by the Dutch yard in 2015.

Initially the brief for the new boat was for a more classical yacht, similar to the 79m/259ft three-masted gaff schooner Athena , which Royal Huisman built for Silicon Valley mogul Jim Clark in 2004. However, the owner quickly realised he would prefer a more modern yacht: a fast-looking hull shape with straight lines, long waterline and plumb bow. The concept of Sea Eagle II was born. 

“Having worked with him to build the original Sea Eagle , we understood the owner’s priorities from the start,” says Spans. “These are: low maintenance, functionality, and safety, including ease of moving around the yacht, even when heeled at sea.

“For each of the key aspects of the boat he asked for three proposals, he would then choose one of them and leave us to implement it,” Spans adds. “He put a huge amount of trust in the shipyard and in our craftsmanship.”

Royal Huisman reveals 116ft ‘floating resort’ catamaran superyacht concept

“This is not a change in direction; it is an expansion of possibilities,” says Jan Timmerman, CEO of the 136-year-old…

The scale of this yacht is nothing short of astounding. The sleek hull lines belie the 4m/13ft freeboard and the two-tier deckhouse, including a half-raised bridge, looks entirely in proportion. The main deck-level accommodation has a huge expanse of glass, with the 360º view interrupted only by minimal mullions. There are also acres of cockpit space, with room left over for a long sweep of uncluttered aft deck.

Mark Whiteley was responsible for developing the interior and refining the exterior styling. He created a simple and modern style for the interior, with straight lines. Lacquered Alpi walnut wall panels, brushed natural oak floors and dark stained wenge trims are complemented by light colour leather handrails and upholstered wall panels.

Part of the brief was for the yacht to be able to host business meetings – the forward part of the superstructure therefore includes a large saloon with expansive seating, plus a 16-seat table for formal dining.

A technical challenge 

Dykstra Naval Architects drew a narrow and efficient hull shape with a maximum beam of only 12.4m/40ft, while displacement has been kept down to a relatively light 1,050 tonnes at full load. The final shape was achieved following extensive computational flow dynamics (CFD) calculations, velocity prediction programming (VPP), and testing in both tow tanks and wind tunnels. These all helped to determine sail balance, keel position and predicted rudder angles.

The plumb bow is balanced by a modest, but graceful, stern overhang, with a contemporary, relatively wide transom at deck level. Twin knuckle lines extend aft from near the bow, merging into one amidships and then forming a chine aft. Right aft the hull has negative curvature on the flare below the chine, which gives interesting reflections in the gleaming paintwork.

The lead naval architect, Dykstra’s Erik Wassen, told me he introduced the knuckle lines to give the hull “a bolder and more interesting shape.” The owner liked the concept and Mark Whiteley helped to refine the detail. Wassen describes the underwater shape as being: “a very modern round bilge shape, with a nice slender hull that gives good sailing capabilities.” Appendages are a conventional fin keel and balanced rudder.

The latter presented an interesting technical challenge, according to Wassen. Initially they looked at fabricating the rudder stock in steel, but that alone would weigh three tonnes. Screening a number of alternatives led to a decision to use carbon for the stock, with a foam core section clad in a relatively thin composite skin for the blade. 

The result is what it’s producer, Royal Huisman’s sister company Rondal, believes to be the biggest ever carbon rudder, weighing only 1,250kg, which helps to keep weight out of the ends of the boat. The weight saving here also enabled the intended fore and aft trim to be achieved with the ballast in its optimal location.

The rudder includes load sensors to record and verify torque, side forces and bending moment while sailing. “There is not much load data available for rudders of this size of sailing yacht, so it’s very conservatively engineered,” says Spans. Fibre-optic sensors are incorporated to enable a database to be created that will help with designing future composite rudders for very large yachts.

Due to the distance of the helm stations from the rudder, the steering is via an electric-hydraulic system, which means there’s no feedback from the helm. The plan is to investigate whether data from the sensors can be used in a feedback system to give a more natural feel to steering the boat under sail. 

Structural engineering

This is one of the most interesting elements of yacht design, yet is all too often under appreciated. Extensive modelling showed a couple of unexpected problems that needed clever solutions during Sea Eagle II ’s design and engineering. 

Instead of the hull flexing smoothly under load, like an I-beam, the presence of a forward intermediate deck introduced hard spots in this area, resulting in stress concentrations at the forward end of the superstructure. This required a lot of design work to create a smooth transition of stress from the lower deck to the intermediate one and then on to the upper deck.

Structural engineering was extensively modelled for Sea Eagle II

The roof of the superstructure also posed a challenge, in that the inside surface of a beam needs to become shorter as it flexes. But the original plan for the aluminium roof wasn’t able to accommodate this, with the result the modelling showed stresses concentrating in the corners of the mullions and in the glass itself. 

The solution was to avoid welding the top of the mullions to the roof, opting instead for a flexible joint that allows for movement when necessary. Wassen likens it to the joints in large buildings that need to be included to allow for thermal expansion and contraction.

Whiteley also helped to refine the exterior styling. In addition to the detail of the knuckles, his input helped to refine the shapes – particularly curves and softening corners – in the superstructure.

Panamax rig

The requirement to be able to clear the Bridge of the Americas at the Pacific end of the Panama canal called for the schooner rig with three equal masts. All are of carbon and are made by Rondal, with integrated sail handling systems and Carbo-Link carbon standing rigging.

Each mast has in-boom furling, while the aft two have staysails for use when reaching. The tank and wind tunnel testing was used to verify different headsail options, particularly to determine the differences between a large blade jib versus a large staysail or yankee.

“Obviously you have better windward performance with a large blade,” says Wassen, “but as soon as you bear away the yankee is much more forgiving in trimming, so we decided that made more sense.” A further advantage is that when the yankee is part furled the sheeting point remains the same.

In addition, a blade jib requires much higher sheet loads to maintain leech tension. Even though Sea Eagle II is a three-masted yacht, the yankee sheet loads are still predicted to reach 18 tonnes – but this still allows standard-size captive winches to be used, rather than larger custom-made units.

The Panamax limitation obviously poses the question as to whether sail area needed to be compromised to fulfil this criteria. However, this is clearly not the case for Sea Eagle II . Hull speed is close to 20 knots and the yacht is clearly capable of surfing at much higher speeds, despite being designed as a pure cruiser. This role, of course, suggests keeping heel angles to a maximum of 10-15°. 

Nevertheless, the VPP figures suggest potential boat speeds of 17-18 knots in 16 knots of true breeze with a true wind angle of 70°. “As soon as you can ease the sheets a little bit, we have a lot of sail area,” says Wassen, “so on a beam reach, I wouldn’t be surprised if a steady 20 knots is possible.”

Hiscox chairman among missing after yacht sinks

The chairman of a Bermuda-headquartered company is among the missing after the British-flagged luxury yacht, Bayesian , sank off the coast of Sicily on Monday morning, the BBC has reported.

Jonathan Bloomer, 70, and his wife Judy, were two of the six who were still missing after 15 people were rescued and one was confirmed dead.

The Briton joined international specialist insurer Hiscox Ltd last summer and became chairman in July last year.

The diversified international insurance group is listed on the London Stock Exchange and headquartered in Bermuda at Chesney House in Hamilton. The company has more than 3,000 staff across 14 countries and 32 offices.

Mr Bloomer is also the chairman of Morgan Stanley International bank.

Search, rescue and recovery continued on Tuesday as investigators continued to piece together what happened.

Others missing included British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, known as “Britain’s Bill Gates”, and his 18-year old daughter, Hannah.

The two others unaccounted for were lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda, a jewellery designer.

Mr Morvillo successfully defended Mr Lynch against US fraud charges and has been a partner at the Clifford Chance law firm in New York.

The Bayesian capsized at about 4.30am, according to ship-tracking site Marine Traffic cited by the BBC.

It sank with 22 people on board consisting of 12 passengers and a crew of ten.

The Bayesian is a 56-metre sailing superyacht built by Perini Navi in Italy. It was known for its unusual 75-metre single mast, one of the world's tallest made of aluminium (II).

The 81-meter contemporary schooner was perfectly on schedule for her delivery date, but Covid-19 restrictions in the Netherlands prevented the finishing touch from being completed.

Despite the strict regulations introduced last spring, the shipyard was able to get up in a very short time.

All this allowed the team to safely “pick up where they left off” in these extraordinary times and with very high quality standards that have made this shipyard an important reference all over the world.

Nearly all board systems, such as gensets, air conditioning, waste water treatment and electronics, were thoroughly tested in the year prior to launch to avoid any surprises during the commissioning stage.

Sea Eagle sailing

Spectacular speeds over 21 knots can be achieved by the world’s largest aluminium sailing yacht by powering up SEA EAGLE II’s Rondal rig, which can carry over 3500 square meters of sail area evenly distributed over her carbon Panamax masts.

The full sail area is controlled by 34 winches from sailing system integrator Rondal.

The largest winches for the world’s largest aluminium sailing yacht – for the yankee, staysail sheets and mizzen sheet runners – are capable of a tremendous 18 tons (18000 kg) pulling load.

Thanks to these record numbers, SEA EAGLE II will be ranked among the top 10 largest sailboats in the world.

Upon delivery to her owner, she will be the largest aluminium sailing yacht in the world.

Her masts are over 60 meters high and the yacht has a 4-meter rudder, the largest ever built with this material.

The yacht will also have a hydraulic crow’s nest, which will rise up the main mast and give supreme 360-degree views out to sea.

The interiors consist of 6 cabins for 12 guests, a master suite and a cabin for 13 crew members.

Mr. Yin has wanted to reaffirm his confidence in the shipyard’s abilility to build his ultimate dream yacht, commissioning the SEA EAGLE II.

Queen Mary has had an emotional encounter with a dog that has a special connection to her family's pet.

The moving moment happened in Assens, on the west coast of the island of Funen, during the third day of Queen Mary and King Frederik's summer cruise .

As the royal couple was touring part of the town, they came across a woman with her two border collies, one black and the other brown.

King Frederik immediately noticed the brown dog's resemblance to their own dog, Coco, and it turns out the dog – named Eagle – is its father.

He told Mary, who was photographed enthusiastically patting the dog and giving it cuddles.

Eagle's owner later told local media the dog was referred to the Dansk Kennel Klub when the royal couple wanted their dog, Grace, to have brown puppies. They used to have another brown border collie, Ziggy who lived with the royals for 12 years before passing away in 2017.

King Frederik and Queen Mary spent Wednesday touring Assens and its surrounds during the second-last stop on their summer cruise on board the royal yacht Dannebrog.

Assens, which is celebrating its 500th anniversary as a market town, enthusiastically welcomed the king and queen with large crowds turning out to see them.

After meeting locals soon after the vessel docked at Assens Harbour, the king and queen took a carriage ride to the town hall.

Queen Mary wore a floral dress by Australian-brand Zimmermann and a Ralph Lauren jacket.

She then visited the Peter Willemoes School, where Mary spent time with students in its homework café while King Frederik kicked around a football with the Assens FC Optimus club.

Later, they reunited to plant a tree in Lundager Forest where they met the dogs, before visiting a laboratory and ending the day with a walk through the town's historic centre.

The couple later hosted a reception on board Dannebrog for the town's special guests before the yacht set sail for their final stop, Vejle, in the southeast of the Jutland Peninsula.

The four-day summer cruise began on Monday on Bornholm, an island in the Baltic Sea east of Copenhagen and off the Swedish coast.

The couple's summer cruise will be their final voyage on board the vessel for 2024.

First Look: Royal Huisman unveils new images of 81-meter SEA EAGLE II

Royal Huisman has released a collection of stunning new images of the elegant 81m (266ft) sailing yacht SEA EAGLE II , currently the largest aluminum sailing yacht in the world, following her global voyage covering over 45,000 nautical miles. 

Showcasing never seen before images since her low-key delivery under the shadow of the pandemic in 2020, pictures reveal her dramatic lines, plumb bow and majestic Panamax rig under power, courtesy of Dykstra Naval Architects and Mark Whitely Design. 

Her vast rigging encompasses three mainsails that can be hoisted simultaneously for ultra-efficient post-lunch getaways, while her aluminum hull ensures a lightness, acceleration, strength and fuel efficiency, giving her the edge over other heavy, sail-assisted yachts.

As well as being an aesthetically alluring yacht, one with real presence on the water, this is a yacht that regularly sails at double-digit speeds and takes a matter of minutes to go from anchored to sailing.

41m Royal Huisman world cruising sailing yacht Surama for sale

The 40.7-metre Royal Huisman sailing yacht Surama is now openly listed with Jamie Small of Burgess at a new reduced asking price.

Built of aluminium in 1997 the ketch was refitted in 2017 at Royal Huisman and has since had extensive maintenance carried out on her. Surama was designed by Ted Fontaine with interior by Andrew Winch and naval architecture by Ted Hood.

A contemporary interior, with deckhouse and lower saloon, in neutral fabrics complemented by light teak joinery accommodates up to eight guests in three cabins. The large owner’s suite is aft and has a private study as well as direct cockpit access, and there are two guest cabins midships, each with an additional Pullman berth.

The deck layout has been designed considering both guest use and ease of sail handling. There is an aft cockpit which can be used for dining or converted to offer a secure sunpad, while further outdoor seating can be found between the dual helm stations and the deckhouse. For easy access to the water, a central section of the aft deck folds down to create a swim platform.

Under power, twin 570hp Mercedes diesel engines give the Lloyd's-classed 270GT yacht for sale a maximum speed of 12 knots and a transoceanic range of 4,300 nautical miles at 10 knots. 

She has a centreboard keel reducing draft from 6.8 metres to 2.9 metres when raised, giving access to shallower waters and anchorages.

Lying in Turkey, Surama is now asking €6,900,000.

Superyacht Loon

With the ever-expanding portfolio of charter yachts vying for attention, the 221-foot Loon took to social media to showcase its offerings. Not just with a Facebook page of pretty destinations, but with an Instagram account that now has 140,000 followers and a YouTube channel with 122,000 folks who watch its journeys.

The yacht, previously christened  Icon,  splashed in 2010 when it left the Dutch shipyard Icon Yachts. Purchased in 2023 by owners who named the yacht after their lakehouse residents, the loon bird, it is now widely recognized on the charter scene, thanks partly to its social-media presence but mostly because of its eclectic crew.

Captain Paul Clarke, who has been with the owner since 2017 and created the social-media frenzy, made his way from the vessel’s smaller siblings to helm this third generation of yachts named Loon. An overflowing toy box and tenders that include a wake-surfing boat, as well as an inventory of all the top brands, have made this an exceptional charter vessel, with IYC being the primary brokers.

The yacht’s timeless lines and contemporary features are a testament to RWD Design’s forward-thinking philosophy. “ Loon has many features which are only now being incorporated into today’s yachts,” Clarke told Robb Report.

An impressive catalog of toys is a given on any reputable charter yacht, but Loon ‘s toy trove is a cut above the rest. “Those who have the most toys win—this has always been our mantra,” says Capt. Paul Clarke. “For instance, most yachts have two Jet Skis, we have four. We apply that philosophy across the toy spectrum.” It is a thrill-a-minute onboard with Seabobs, wakeboards, scuba equipment, foils, and more towables and inflatables than one can get on in a week. Loon is regularly asked to test toys before they hit the market. “We always get pre-release toys to demo. We were also the first superyacht to carry Lift foils,” adds Clarke.

A Singing, Dancing Crew

The linchpin holding a great charter together is the crew. But Loon raises the bar with its onboard team, who are born entertainers. Besides their regular duties, crewmembers double as a scuba instructor, a masseuse, a pro kitesurfer, a personal trainer, a yoga instructor, and even a DJ. The chief engineer provides an added layer of charm with his guitar skills for evening soirees. “I always hire crew who have secondary skills,” says Clarke.

The Influencer

If it isn’t on social media, did it even happen? Clarke started Loon ‘s social accounts back in the day to share the wealth of content he gathered from shooting videos of guests. Today, Loon has a crew member whose sole job is to create content with “equipment in hand 24/7.” This person, using drones and an occasional helicopter, creates charter memories with videography, photography, and other content-creation skills. Clarke says Loon is the only superyacht to have this dedicated position. The strategy has paid off. The vessel has 143,000 Instagram followers and 121,000 YouTube subscribers tuning in to watch its every move.

Loon-Inspired Inflatables

Aside from the yacht’s signature beach club, Loon literally expands for on-the-water playtime. In fact, the yacht is more than a consumer of water toys. It’s an influencer. Inflatable manufacturer FunAir developed its Beach Club Sea Pool, the first-of-its-kind inflatable Yacht Slide (with a stylish carbon-fiber finish) specifically for this yacht. This section serves as a bumper point for toys and launchpad for Jet Skis. The netted surroundings also protect swimmers from currents and jellyfish.

Looney Activities

Loon’ s activities regularly catch the eyes of onlookers. The vessel’s G23 Nautique is ideal for wake surfing. However, when chartering, the professional poker player and influencer Dan Bilzerian decided to take water stunts up a notch or two and wake-surf behind the yacht itself. While Loon regularly has “tons of A-listers” on board doing epic things, stunts are also for the crew. For its Instagram feed, the crew have leaped over the bow dressed as Thanksgiving turkeys and pulled off impressive kitesurfing jumps. The next booked charter will include magicians, helicopters, fire breathers, and a renowned DJ. “We try to make it extraordinary no matter who the guest is,” says Clarke. 

The Honey Bees

Teaming up with the biodynamic honey producers at Hikian in southern Finland, Loon has adopted its own beehive and features the honey in its cuisine. The buzz around this premium honey is that the bees thrive in the unspoiled air of the Finnish forest. As well as the flavor, the honey also accompanies the chef’s creations.

Crypto Charters

Two years ago, the former Loon was the first superyacht to accept charter fees in cryptocurrency. Fast forward to now, the current Loon continues to accept Bitcoin for bookings. Embracing crypto transactions is not just another form of payment but also a nod to a younger yachting clientele.

Involved in Rescue Missions

This Caribbean charter season has already seen Loon involved in two successful search-and-rescue missions. The first was retrieving an overturned fishing boat at the request of the U.S. Coast Guard. Just before Christmas, Loon also responded to another search and rescue that came from a couple scuba diving in the Dog Islands. Clarke sent the tender ahead to locate the missing woman who had been swept out. “It could have ended much worse if the rescue hadn’t come together so quickly,” he says.

The Main Suite Built Around the Bathtub

The interior styling by Studio Linse is inviting across all seven cabins, but the one that really catches the eye is the full-beam primary suite. With neutral and contemporary aesthetics, it is located on the main deck, where large windows flood the space with natural light. Loon keeps everyone connected wherever it is anchored by remaining fully hooked up to the onboard Starlink system. A superyacht captain shares 3 things people who want to charter a luxury vessel should know

Vacationing on a superyacht may sound like it's all Champagne and sunbathing.

But before boarding a luxury vessel, superyacht captain Kelly Gordon advises keeping certain things in mind.

Yachting is a summer pastime with risks and nuances for clients and crew.

One of these images is likely what comes to mind when you hear the word "superyacht," a phrase generally used to describe a yacht over 80 feet in length.

While ultra-luxurious vessels are associated with all things carefree, tragic events such as the sinking of the Bayesian superyacht off the coast of Sicily on Monday is a reminder that yachting is a pastime with unique risks and nuances. It's unclear what the protocols were on the Bayesian.

For those keen on the idea of chartering a superyacht, captain Kelly Gordon, 42, told Business Insider there are a number of important factors to consider before hopping on board.

Gordon fell in love with yachting after she stepped aboard a yacht for the first time in her mid-20s.

Hellbent on reaching captain level, Gordon quickly worked her way up the chain of command. She's spent most of her time sailing the Bahamas and the Caribbean and is now based in Florida, where she works as a captain on a 108-foot-long privately owned vessel.

Gordon, who has over 12,600 followers on Instagram , shares three factors to keep in mind before boarding a chartered superyacht.

Think of the process of chartering a superyacht as buying a house

One of the most important things to do when chartering a superyacht is to work with a charter broker, Gordon says.

"The charter manager's job is to No. 1: find you a safe boat," Gordon said, adding that in her experience, "Not all programs put safety as high up on the list as it should be."

She also likes to equate charter brokers to Realtors in that they take on the role of finding you the best option for your taste.

"You find one that you gel with really well and has a good reputation, and then you discuss with them what your budget is, where you want to go, what your activity levels are, what your personalities are like," Gordon said.

Pairing clients with a crew that aligns with their characteristics is a huge part of a charter broker's job, Gordon said.

"If you think about it, you're living with that crew for 24/7, around the clock," she said. "You're not going put someone that just wants to sit and read books all day with a crew that's extremely active."

Find a crew that is competent and prioritizes safety

Charter brokers also help match clients with a competent crew that prioritizes safety.

"I don't know that many people realize just how much their life is in our hands when we cast those lines and we go to sea," Gordon said.

Part of that is having a safety briefing, which Gordon carries out every time she welcomes clients onto a chartered vessel before leaving a dock.

A thorough safety briefing includes informing clients about the location of safety equipment and lifejackets and the procedures for events such as a fire, a person falling overboard, or the boat sinking.

"You should have a safety briefing, and if you don't get one, you should ask for one," Gordon said.

The process, she added, can be different on privately owned yachts, where passengers may be familiar with the vessel.

The Bayesian is a private yacht owned by tech tycoon Mike Lynch; it's not yet known what kind of safety protocols staff and guests were trained on.

Make sure there's a member of the crew on watch 24/7

"A lot of charter guests think when they go to sleep, the crew goes to sleep," Gordon said.

But that shouldn't be the case, she added. "You want to be on a boat knowing that someone's up, because if the weather changes or the anchor starts to drag, you need somebody that's up and ready to go and get everybody else to handle it."

Among the biggest weather risks are tornados, which can be extremely difficult to predict and prepare for whether you're on land or at sea.

"I'm from the Midwest, where tornados pop up," Gordon said. "It's hard to see a tornado coming, and if you do see it coming, the tornado goes where it wants to go."

Most often, that leaves people near the weather event with just minutes to ready themselves, which is even trickier "in the middle of the night."

While rapid changes in weather are tough to contend with, Gordon recommends researching the areas you are sailing in beforehand, like you would when visiting a new country.

"It's no different than if you're going on vacation on land," she said. "You want to know where you're going. Don't put that just all on the crew."

While the research doesn't have to be as extensive as the crew should be doing, it's important to still be "responsible for your own self as well as your family and your guests."

Mike Lynch, a renowned tech entrepreneur often referred to as the "British Bill Gates," has gone missing after the superyacht Bayesian sank off the coast of Sicily during a violent storm on Monday. The 59-year-old, who is best known as the founder of Autonomy Corporation, was among the 22 people aboard the yacht, which included two Americans and a Canadian. 

Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, was also on board but was among the 15 people rescued from the 56-meter sailing vessel. Italian authorities confirmed that one body had been recovered near the wreckage, while six others remain missing, according to Luca Cari, a spokesperson for the Italian fire rescue service.

Who Is Mike Lynch?

Mike Lynch co-founded Autonomy Corporation, a software company that emerged as a leader in the UK tech industry in the mid-1990s.

Lynch's contributions to the field were recognised with an OBE (Order of the British Empire) for services to enterprise in 2006, and he was later appointed to the UK’s science and technology council under Prime Minister David Cameron in 2011.

Lynch was also elected as a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2008 and the Royal Society in 2014.

HP Inflation Case

Despite his accolades, Lynch faced legal challenges related to the 2011 sale of Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11.1 billion. He was accused of inflating the company’s value and misleading regulators, leading to charges in 2018.

However, in June of this year, Lynch was cleared of all 15 counts of fraud during a trial in the United States.

What Happened To The Superyacht?

British-flagged yacht Bayesian reportedly sank near Porticello at approximately 5 am following the severe storm. Of the survivors, eight, including a one-year-old child, were taken to local hospitals where they are reported to be in stable condition.

Built in 2008 by the Italian shipyard Perini Navi, the Bayesian was a luxury yacht valued at 35 million euros (£30 million) at its launch. The vessel featured a “Japanese-style” interior and could accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites, alongside ten crew members.

The yacht's design was recognised with the award for best exterior styling at the 2009 World Superyacht Awards.

According to reports, the Bayesian is linked to Mike Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares. Maritime records from Equasis indicate that the yacht is owned by Revtom, a company registered in the Isle of Man, with Bacares listed as the sole legal owner and an address registered in London. 

As search and rescue operations continue, the fate of Mike Lynch and the others missing from the yacht remains uncertain.

The massive yacht is worth $180 million and is one of the biggest privately owned boats seen in the Thousand Islands

The DreAMBoat is owned by the billionaire entrepreneur, Arthur Blank, who is the  founder of Home Depot and the owner of the NFL team Atlanta Falcons.

The beauty was built in the Netherlands and set sail for the first time in 2019. It's big enough for 23 guests in 11 cabins. There are 16 additional rooms for the 33 crew members working onboard.

The yacht features a custom interior with a swimming pool and a jacuzzi on the sun deck.

The Royal Yacht Britannia : A History of Queen Elizabeth II’s Favorite Palace

The Royal Yacht Britannia in Hong Kong during its last voyage in July of 1997.

The christening of The Royal Yacht Britannia serves as a cheeky season opener to  The Crown . Black-and-white Pathé News–style footage shows a soon-to-be-crowned Queen Elizabeth II (Claire Foy) cheered on by shipbuilders as she launches her new 412-foot yacht. “I hope that this brand-new vessel, like your brand-new queen, will prove to be dependable and constant. Capable of weathering any storm,” she says about the royal replacement for the  Victoria and Albert III . By the series’ season finale, set 44 years later, both the sovereign and the floating palace she christened  Britannia will have hit rough seas—the cost of repairing the creaky old vessel and the modern role of the monarchy both in question. Ultimately, the yacht that undertook 968 official voyages all over the world, hosting dignitaries—including 13 US presidents—at receptions and banquets, was dry-docked near Edinburgh, Scotland, where it continues to be a popular tourist attraction. Here are some of the most buoyant facts about the palace the Queen famously said was “the one place where I can truly relax.”

In a nod to the country’s post-war austerity, Elizabeth scaled back the design of the ship that her father, King George VI, had commissioned just two days before he died. Rather than following the opulent plan laid out by the Scottish firm McInnes Gardner & Partners, she opted for the understated elegance envisioned by architect Sir Hugh Casson, who described “running a lawn mower over the Louis XVIl adornments” in favor of simple white walls, lilac-gray carpeting, and “a bit of gilding in grand places.” Elizabeth and her husband, Prince Phillip, were said to have personally chosen the furniture—much of it, including linens, recycled from the  Victoria and Albert —fabrics (florals, chintz, toile), and paintings.

As a former Royal Navy Commander, Prince Phillip also saw to the ship’s technical details, and his Bluebottle racing yacht inspired the Britannia ’s navy-hued hull. Outer decks were made of two-inch Burmese teak. The steering wheel was reclaimed from Britannia ’s namesake, King Edward VII’s 1893 racing yacht; a wheelhouse wheel came from George V’s racing yacht; and a gold-and-white binnacle (housing the ship’s compass) was salvaged from King George III’s yacht and installed on the Veranda deck. Fittings from former royal ships were also reused.

The 4,000-ton yacht had a crew of 220 Royal Yachtsmen who lived on board, about 45 household staff, and occasionally a 26-member Royal Marine embarked to entertain dignitaries. The monarch often welcomed guests from the ship’s grand staircase. (Stairs leading from the Veranda to the Royal deck were sometimes transformed into a water slide for the kids.)  Britannia ’s apartments were designed like those of a first-class ocean liner. A 56-seat state dining room, where many of the gifts given to the monarch (a wood-carved shark from Pitcairn Island, a bejeweled gold statue from Bangkok) were displayed, was the scene of formal dinners with guests such as Sir Winston Churchill, Frank Sinatra, Nelson Mandela, and Bill and Hillary Clinton. More intimate gatherings were held in the Queen’s official reception room, a smaller state drawing room with floral upholstered pieces, simple wood tables, an electric fireplace, and a Welmar baby grand piano bolted to the deck—played by everyone from Sir Noël Coward to Princesses Diana and Margaret. The teak-clad sun lounge, with rattan furniture and a toile loveseat, was Elizabeth’s favorite place—where she had her breakfast, afternoon tea, and also enjoyed her favorite Dubonnet and gin cocktails.

A ship elevator reserved for royal use moved between the Upper and Shelter Decks. The latter is where four Royal Apartments (bedrooms), including the Queen and Prince Phillip’s connecting compartments, were located. Hers featured florals, his had red accents. Elizabeth’s understated Upper Deck private sitting room, done in pastels and neutrals, served as the office where she conducted state business. Phillip used his sitting room, with its wood desk facing a model of his first command, the HMS Magpie , as his study. Below deck there was a wine cellar, as well as a cargo hold that could carry a barge, speed- and sailboats, plus a royal Range Rover and Rolls-Royce. The yacht could also be converted into a hospital (though it never was).

As depicted in  The Crown, Britannia ’s final official trip was to Hong Kong in 1997, where Prince Charles attended the handover of the territory to China. By then, Prime Minister Tony Blair’s administration was complaining that the £11 million a year needed to keep the boat afloat couldn’t be justified. With Queen Elizabeth, Prince Phillip, and all of their children in attendance,  Britannia was decommissioned at a ceremony in Portsmouth, England on December 11, 1997, with the monarch seen wiping away a tear. The yacht, now docked in Leith, Scotland, is open to the public as a museum and events space. (Prior to their wedding, Princess Anne and Mark Phillips’s daughter Zara Phillips and her fiancé Mike Tindall had a celebration there.) Visitors will note that every clock on board reads 3:01, the exact time the Queen disembarked her beloved  Britannia for the final time on that December day.

The Royal Yacht Squadron - A History

Founded in 1815, the Royal Yacht Squadron is one of the most prestigious and exclusive yacht clubs in the world, and enjoys a rich history after more than 200 years. In 2016 a new history of the Royal Yacht Squadron was published by Unicorn Press, Making Waves Two Hundred Years of The Royal Yacht Squadron, described by Classic Boat magazine as ‘ a magnificent book ’ with ‘ stunning design ’. The Yacht Club, as the Squadron was first known, was founded at the Thatched House Tavern in St James’s, London, on the 1st of June 1815. The qualification entitling a gentleman to become a member was the ownership of a vessel not under 10 tons. Today this is interpreted as a gentleman “ actively interested in yachting ”. A plain white burgee graced the masthead of members’ yachts; they also wore a plain white ensign with the union in the canton. In 1821 this was changed to a red burgee and ensign.

The Earl of Yarborough, later first Commodore of the Yacht Club, welcomed the Prince Regent as a member in 1817. In 1820, when the Prince Regent became George IV, Royal was added to the club’s name. The Club’s association with the Royal Navy began early and Nelson’s Captain at Trafalgar, Admiral Sir Thomas Hardy, was among early Honorary Naval members.

In 1826, the Club took to organising yacht racing as a principal feature of the annual regatta at Cowes. In 1828, the rule requiring a yacht on the port tack to give way to another on starboard was introduced.

During the 1840’s, in response to the formation of other yacht clubs, races open to non-RYS yachts were also introduced.

The spirit of invention induced by competition led to yachts “of such celerity in sailing and beauty of construction” that they were of utility to the Royal Navy. In 1829 the Admiralty issued a warrant to wear what is now the Navy’s white ensign. The burgee, in compliment, is differenced with a St George’s cross and crown. Lord Yarborough’s Falcon led a rally to Cherbourg in 1831. In 1833 the Club became the Royal Yacht Squadron by command of His Majesty King William IV.

Lord Wilton’s time as Commodore was full of incident and achievement. World-wide cruising continued to flourish. Ben Boyd, in his schooner Wanderer, visited the Solomon Islands and was devoured by cannibals. In the same year, 1851, Commodore Stevens, visiting the Great Exhibition, challenged for the Squadron’s £100 Cup for a race around the Island. America’s victory was witnessed by Queen Victoria and the Prince of Wales, later Commodore and Edward VII.

The Marquess of Anglesea was so surprised at America’s speed that he thought she must have had a propeller. Deerhound RYS witnessed the sea fight between Kearsarge and Alabama. Gazelle RYS rescued the Empress Eugenie at the end of the Franco Prussian War and Squadron yachts took succour to the troops in the Crimea. Lord Brassey’s Sunbeam logged 37,000 nautical miles girdling the earth.

The Golden Age of Cowes was heralded by the election of the Prince of Wales as Commodore. There had been a chapter of disagreement between the newly fledged YRA, the Squadron and other old established clubs over racing rules. The YRA seemed to favour the racing machine, while the Squadron felt that cruising yachts should still have a look in.

The Prince would not tolerate further dissension and peace of a sort was in the air. The Squadron was not only forwarding new ideas to the YRA, but successfully beating all comers under the new rule with Sleuthhound, to be followed by the legendary and remodelled Bloodhound, whose mast is now the Squadron’s flag staff.

The German Emperor brought his Meteor, the 1887 ex America’s Cup challenger Thistle, to Cowes in 1892. This encouraged the Prince of Wales to build Britannia, one of the most successful racing yachts in the calendar. Lord Crawford’s beautiful ship rigged yacht Valhalla cruised far afield and was a noted visitor in Cowes Week; she was also a competitor in the 1905 Transatlantic Race for the German Emperor’s Cup. Her owner, a member with a keen interest in astronomy, had sailed to Mauritius to observe the transit of Venus.

During dinner in the Castle one night, Lord Crawford pointed to a star, observing that one day it may run into the earth. “ If it does ”, Sir Hercules Langrishe replied, “ I hope we will be on the starboard tack ”. World War I broke out inconsiderately during Cowes Week in 1914; both Squadron yachts and yachtsmen were to play their part in that conflict.

After the war, the ladies arrived. They had been entertained before in the “Deer Park”, as the lawn was named in their honour, but it was not until the Squadron secured the ballroom below Castle Rock (now the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club) from Rosa Lewis of Cavendish Hotel fame, that they had a roof of their own. The Six Metres became popular after the First War, encouraged by the British American Cup.

The popularity of the smaller racing boat owes much to two members, Sir Ralph Gore and Sir Kenneth Preston. However, the focus was still on the big class and the public flocked to Cowes to see the J’s – Britannia, Shamrock V and later Endeavour I, thunder past the Green. Tom Sopwith, with the first of his Endeavours, came as near as the Squadron has ever done so far in winning back the “Auld Mug” as the America’s Cup is affectionately known.

Sir Philip Hunloke was the first President of the newly formed Ocean Racing Club and, with Sir Ralph Gore, encouraged the Fastnet Race, first won by Jolie Brise in 1925. The Second World War saw the RYS Castle as part of HMS Vectis and head-quarters of ‘J’ Force. After the War, at the suggestion of Peter Scott, King George VI presented the Britannia Cup, one of the most celebrated races of Cowes Week.

1948-Present Day

The decade following the end of the War was called the “age of austerity and reverse sheer”. Neither were good looking. However, Bluebottle, the Dragon owned by the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, gave small boat racing a kick start. Speed was becoming acceptable too, and Peter du Cane with Vospers was a pioneer. Tommy Sopwith won the first off-shore power boat race to Torquay in 1961.

The moving spirit behind this and the Boat Show was Max Aitken. In 1957, Hugh Goodson, who helped to found the Sail Training Association, headed the 1958 Squadron challenge for the America’s Cup. Captain Henry Denham and Lord Camrose explored the Mediterranean and the former wrote his remarkable guides. In 1966/67 Sir Francis Chichester sailed on his own round the world, which led to the Chichester Trophy, presented by The Duke of Westminster, and the Whitbread Round the World Race. Sir Owen Aisher produced Yeoman after Yeoman and Ted Heath won the Sydney – Hobart with Morning Cloud in 1969. The Admiral’s Cup enlivened racing at Cowes.

The first Chairman of the Cowes Combined Clubs in 1964 was Lord Runciman. Cowes was changing. Two Commodores, Sir John Nicholson and John Roome, consolidated the Squadron’s position and Sir Maurice Laing gave Cowes the chance, through a Trust, to take over the marina.

The Castle itself was fitted for ladies in the 1960s. The brass hot water cans disappeared in favour of the bedroom basin and the radiator made its appearance. The Pavilion, designed by Sir Thomas Croft, was opened in 2000. This elegant creation provides on shore facilities for yachtsmen and their families while allowing the Castle to retain its ‘Country house’ ambiance.

The Pavilion also enabled the Squadron to cross burgees with the New York Yacht Club in celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Schooner America’s famous victory of 1851. The latest alteration is the RYS Jubilee Haven which, together with the Cowes Harbour Commission pontoon off the Parade, does much to enliven the scene on the water for the visitor to Cowes.

From The Rodder’s Journal Vault: Photos From The Fremont Nostalgia Drags Circa 1986!

(Photos by Steve Coonan) –  A first for Bangshift – the guys over at The Rodder’s Journal supplied us with a file of old photos taken at Baylands Raceway in Fremont, California, back in 1986. Steve Coonan (Publisher of The Rodder’s Journal ) would drive to Fremont in his old Deuce highboy roadster to shoot photos on a freelance basis back in those days. Some of these photos were published in American Rodder before Steve created The Rodder’s Journal . What we find remarkable about the event – a quarter of a century later is just how many famous cars were actually making full passes down the quarter-mile. Steve said “I remember the Fremont Nostalgia Drags being a whole lot of fun, but looking at the list of famous cars that were there and racing seems truly remarkable today.”

Just a quick look through an old stack of 8×10 black & white prints showed Art Chrisman making a 170+ mph pass in the “Hustler”, the old Mooneyham & Sharp “554” ’34 coupe smoking the tires the length of the track along with the Glass Slipper dragster, the Stone, Woods & Cook Willys, the “Pure Heaven” Fuel Altered and even Chrisman’s #25 dragster in action. This was also at the peak of the rivalry between “Fat Jack” Robinson’s ’46 Ford coupe and Jerry Moreland’s ’40 Ford sedan. Even Pat Ganahl was on hand and racing his “Low Buck Special” Hemi-powered Altered.

The event was officially titled the “6th Annual Nostalgia Nationals” and was put on by the Nostalgia Drag Racing Association. The NDRA was the brainchild of Nor-Cal hot rodders Tom Prufer and Brian Burnett. It was truly a treat to see this group of cars smoke the tires down the drag strip.

Chrisman Hustler

Art Chrisman made several fully smoked-in passes in the original, but freshly restored Hustler dragster at Fremont the first weekend in May back in 1986.

Pure Heaven Altered

Bob Nylander faithfully restored and campaigned the Leon Fitzgerald’s Pure Heaven back in the ‘80s. The Fuel Altered was powered by a blown big block Chevy.

554-coupe

Both Tom Prufer and Brian Burnett, promoters of the event, ran cars that weekend at Fremont. Tom was on hand with one of his “Power King” dragsters, while Brian was running the freshly restored 554 coupe. Both Brian and Tom are still active in the sport. Prufer has moved to Texas, while Burnett now calls east coast home.

Mike Cook has been racing his father’s famed Stone, Woods and Cook Willys since the 1970s. It ran at OCIR with a tunnel rammed big block Chevy. By the 1980s he had restored it to its original blown-Hemi AA/GS configuration. Mike still owns the car and his dad’s ’37 Chevy coupe today.

Glass Slipper

The Glass Slipper was one of the prettiest dragsters of the 1950s. Ed Cortopossi was still at the controls in the mid-‘80s when it was hazing the slicks to half-rack at Fremont. It used an injected smallblock Chevy on alcohol.

Low Buck Special

Pat Ganahl along with Bob McCray and Gene Adams teamed up to run the Nostalgia Drags back in the ‘80s. First with this Altered and then with an injected dragster. The stroked 354 Hemi powered the fiberglass T-bodied roadster to 9-second times. We believe that is Bob McCray driving.

Fiat Fuel Coupe

The Mews and Poncia Fiat-cloaked dragster was a regular at nostalgia meets of the era. It originally ran at Half Moon Bay back in the ‘60s. The supercharged Hemi provided more than enough horsepower to smoke the tires the full length of the strip. These weren’t burnouts, but full-power runs.

Fat Jack and Jerry Moreland

Fat Jack and Jerry Moreland were at the forefront of the rivalry for Super Street bragging rights. Both were powered by blown big block Chevys. Moreland’s efforts were spearheaded by Bob Bauder, while George Striegel (owner of Clay Smith) supplied the alcohol-burning rat motor used in Fat Jack’s ’46 Ford coupe. This weekend, however, both succumbed to mechanical difficulties. Cole Cutler won the class with his Boss 429 motivated ’34 Ford coupe.
