Hands-On The Ulysse Nardin Marine Mega Yacht
How do you like my tourbillon, spherical moonphase, and tide indicator with anchor-and-chain power reserve wristwatch, mr. bond.
They say honesty is the best policy, and Ulysse Nardin seems to have had the maxim in mind when they named this watch: behold the Marine Mega Yacht, coming soon to the wrist of your favorite high roller, yacht-owning plutocrat. The Marine Mega Yacht is an unapologetic paean to the pleasures of the life aquatic, but from the bridge of one of the multimillion dollar floating palaces populating the world's oceans, from the Casino in Monte Carlo, or from a private island somewhere off the Côte d'Azur for that matter. It is a power watch – aside from the sheer cost, its unabashed celebration of superfluous complexity leaves no doubt as to its raison d'être. as However, it would be too much to dismiss this as simply an exercise in extremely conspicuous consumption; there is quite a lot going on technically, however much the watch overwhelms at first (and second, and third) glance with its over-the-top opulence – and as well, it represents a continuation of a decades-old philosophy with respect to the execution of complications at Ulysse Nardin.
Technically speaking, this is a 44mm solid platinum watch, with a grand feu blue enamel dial that carries a semi-abstract representation of the bow of a yacht. There is a tourbillon, with the cage in the shape of a propeller (of course) and there is a spherical moonphase, along with a tide indicator that shows periods of high and low tide, as well as whether or not the tides in question are spring tides or neap tides (the most and least extreme range of high and low tides, which depend on where the Moon is in its orbit around the Earth, although likely owners of the Mega Yacht watch will probably be more concerned with how many cases of champagne there are in the hold than in what the tide's doing). The power reserve indicator is pretty clever – it's in the shape of a ship's anchor, which gradually drops as the mainspring unwinds – the crown-wheel mechanism that links the mainspring barrel's rotation to the anchor chain lives in the aperture at the 12:00 position. There is a function indicator set into the caseband, styled after the Chadburn telegraph used in the early days of steamship travel, to allow the bridge to communicate with the engine room; in the Marine Mega Yach, it shows the position of the crown ("TM" for Tide and Moon; "S" for setting the time; and "W" for winding).
The spherical moonphase is a real treat – the surface is pocked with innumerable miniature craters and the illusion of seeing the lunar surface is very compelling. A spherical moonphase gives a better representation of what one sees in the sky than a conventional moonphase display, although it's still not 100% accurate in that regard, as the same side of the Moon is always facing the Earth. Still, it's a very charming and rather romantic way to implement a moonphase in combination with a tide indicator (another example of combining the two complications is the Vacheron Constantin Les Cabinotiers Celestia , although that watch and the Ulysse Nardin Mega Yacht are obviously going after diametrically opposed goals aesthetically).
While the Mega Yacht is certainly an exercise in very over-the-top design, it is also part of a long history of creating astronomical complications at Ulysse Nardin. The company's best-known complicated watches, other than the many variations on the Freak, include the Trilogy Of Time collection. The Trilogy watches were first released between 1985 and 1992 and include a tellurium, astrolabe, and planetarium watch (which as far as I can recall were all firsts for watchmaking) and more recently, the Ulysse Nardin Moonstruck, which originally debuted in 2009, combined a tellurium with tide and orbiting moonphase indications in a unique fashion.
In general astronomical complications seem to bring out the classicist impulse in watch designers, but this sort of aesthetic – relatively massive cases, with integrated straps and heavy lugs – has a long history at Ulysse Nardin; while the Trilogy pieces are relatively restrained, the Freak was in 2000 one of the very first of the maximalist, complicated watches that were to become the stock-in-trade of many high-end watch brands (or at least, those with the research and development capacity to play the game seriously) for the next decade.
The movement, like the rest of the Mega Yacht, is intended as an homage to yachting; specifically, it's supposed to evoke the engine room of a yacht. At this level of watchmaking (and at this price) I feel a little ambivalent about the absence of the traditional language of fine movement finishing, but traditional curved bridges, polished flanks, and Geneva stripes would probably have felt rather out of place, and the deliberately industrial feel of the caliber UN-631 is a better fit in terms of the design aspirations of the Mega Yacht as a whole. Caliber UN-631 was developed in collaboration with Christophe Claret.
I don't think anyone looking at this watch would have any question as to what it's after – this is not an attempt to add something to the historical vocabulary of haute horlogerie , but rather a solid platinum ode to luxury and to the pleasures of seeing the world, and the high seas as one of their masters. If life were a James Bond movie, it's not a timepiece you'd find on the hero (Bond would probably rather be caught dead than wearing anything that anyone would call a "timepiece") but it's definitely the sort of watch that you'd find on the wrist of Emil Largo, as he stands on the fantail of the Disco Volante in Thunderball , wondering whether it's time to restock the shark pool.

The principality of Monaco, nestled on the Mediterranean coast between France and Italy, has always been an attractive venue for the rich and famous. Whether it is the world-famous Casino, the longstanding Monaco Grand Prix, or the luxurious Monaco Yacht Show, it’s a playboy’s playground. And, of course, where maritime activities are concerned, marine chronometry is never far away. Ulysse Nardin, the official sponsor of the annual event for over a decade, presents the Ulysse Nardin Diver Monaco Yacht Show and Marine Mega Yacht on the eve of the 20th anniversary of the first Monaco Yacht Show.
What started as an event for yacht brokers – people who connect suppliers with customers – has turned into a leading, luxurious gathering of hand-selected yacht manufacturers and affiliated companies. In its 20 years of existence, the show has expanded into the luxury world beyond yachts, represented by luxury brands and high-end automobile manufacturers.
The location for the event is Monaco’s Port Hercules harbour, which we all know from events like the annual Monaco Grand Prix. Every year a selection of the finest yachts is invited to one of the spots available in the harbour. Other than that, about 600 exhibitors are participating, from brokers to suppliers and shipbuilders.
Of course, everything is catered to the life of the super-wealthy, those able to spend millions on an extravagant yacht. But the show is open to the public, so if you fancy checking out some of the stuff on display, you can attend. The 2021 edition of the Monaco Yacht Show runs from the 22 – 25 of September.
Given the brand’s rich history in the development of marine chronometry and precision navigational instruments, it’s no coincidence that Ulysse Nardin is a partner of the Monaco Yacht Show. Even today, through collections like the Marine , Marine Torpilleur , and Diver , the maritime connection is alive and kicking.
With its background and connection to the nautical show, it’s only natural to dress up the emblematic Diver and Marine collection for the occasion. A robust tool-like instrument and an Haute Horlogerie timepiece have been selected to represent the brand and the event.
Ulysse Nardin Marine Mega Yacht Monaco Yacht Show Limited Edition
Up first is a genuinely provocative piece, one that is bound to divide opinions: the Ulysse Nardin Marine Mega Yacht. First presented in platinum , this limited edition of 30 pieces now features a rose gold case. This Haute Horlogerie timepiece pays homage to the nautical credentials associated with Ulysse Nardin and, by default, with the Monaco Yacht Show.
The enamel dial is made in-house and adorned with the stylized bow of a ship. Other than that, there are numerous other references to yachting life. A chain-and-anchor power reserve indicator, for instance, is connected to the windlass you can see at twelve o’clock. This is similar to a ship’s winching system for the anchor. Furthermore, the outer cage of the flying tourbillon is shaped like a propellor.
But the watch is not all show and no go, as it has additional useful indications for marine life. There’s a large 3D moon phase and an indicator of tidal coefficients and volumes. The UN-631 calibre is developed in-house, and as said, regulated by a flying tourbillon. The power reserve is a healthy 80 hours. The Ulysse Nardin Marine Mega Yacht is limited to 30 pieces and has a price of CHF 266,800 .

Ulysse Nardin Diver Chronograph Monaco Yacht Show Limited Edition
The second watch presented is much less complicated and, quite honestly, the more practical of the two for everyday use. The Ulysse Nardin Diver Chronograph Monaco Yacht Show Limited Edition incorporates red, white, and blue throughout the watch for a sporty, maritime look. The 44mm wide case is made of titanium, as is the bezel, screw-down crown and pushers. A sapphire crystal protects the dial and reveals the mechanics on the reverse side. Water-resistance is rated at 300 meters.
The rubber-clad bezel and rubber bracelet, with signature UN link, match the blue used on the chronograph counters. The dial is mainly white with red details to liven it up. Large hour markers and hands make it easy to tell the time at a glance. Underneath the sapphire crystal caseback, you can see the in-house UN-150 chronograph movement, equipped with a silicium escapement. Inspired by its marine heritage and the most beautiful contemporary yachts, Ulysse Nardin's Marine Mega Yacht watch with a rich blue, grand-feu enamel dial is both visually arresting and highly complicated. The watch features a one-minute tourbillon with propeller blades on it, as well as an eight-day, anchor-shaped power-reserve indicator (80 hours) that is created using a unique windlass (or winch) chain and pulley system. The anchor moves up and down to indicate the level of power reserve while the watch is being wound. At the same time, with the winding of the watch, the moving chain wraps around a windlass that is visible via an aperture at 12 o'clock. That window is designed to resemble a ship's Chadburn control throttle. The new patent-pending UN-631 caliber consists of 504 hand-assembled and beautifully finished components. It also offers moonphase indication via a blue-silver orb, tide indications and coefficients.

An extension of the Marine Grand Deck Tourbillon watch launched by Ulysse Nardin in 2016, this new complication model christened the “Marine Mega Yacht” follows the tradition of the Marine collection and the passion for all things nautical that has been a constant feature of the Ulysse Nardin Manufacture ever since its foundation in 1846. While the earlier model celebrated the world of sailboats and luxury liners, this new Mega Yacht creation is dedicated to the owners of these prestigious, contemporary vessels. At the very heart of this exceptional watch, they can rediscover some of the most characteristic features of their boats, carefully crafted to take on the seas of the entire world. This superlative creation is a perfect allegory of a voyage by sea and epitomizes the contemporary spirit of nautical luxury, masterfully embodied through an avant-garde watch design that could only have been created by Ulysse Nardin. Crafted in platinum and with only 30 pieces in the entire world, this authentic flagship of the watchmaking fleet is created by a manufacture that has specialized in making timepieces for sailors since 1846. Its generous dimensions are displayed on the wrist with a playful elegance. With its diameter of 44mm, this is an instrument specially conceived for the modern adventurer who models himself on Captain Nemo. Magnificently reproduced in 3D, the bows of a luxury vessel seem to sur-face from a pool of white gold as though it were emerging from the mist, and cuts through a sea of “grand feu” enamel on a wave of foam portrayed with astonishing realism. To guarantee perfect timing, this construction is regulated by a flying tourbillon. To ensure the watch is firmly anchored in the nautical world, the cage of the flying tourbillon is decorated with a propeller, its blades specially honed to guarantee the highest level of performance for latest-generation yachts. And since every detail counts, the hands, with their design inspired by the venerable marine timepieces that the manufacture has always supplied, move majestically above this scene, like the lamps of lighthouses or buoys floating on the horizon out at sea. Aestheticism is not an aim in itself, however – far from it. The Ulysse Nardin Manufacture has always been keen to provide technical solutions for sailors’ necessities. With the Marine Mega Yacht, Ulysse Nardin has introduced a revolutionary information display designed to optimize yachts’ choice of anchorage points when mooring alongside the shores of the world’s oceans. To craft this watch’s manually wound manufacture mechanical caliber (regulated by a tourbillon), Ulysse Nardin has used its very best watchmakers, who have worked with supreme commitment alongside those from the Christophe Claret manufacture, a brand universally recognized for designing innovative watch complications in its workshops. Innovative and completely visible through its transparent caseback, the movement is designed to resemble the engines found in a vessel’s engine room. This powerful beating heart of the watch has a diameter of 37mm, features 504 components, and is wound by hand. It guarantees a power reserve of 80 hours at a cruising speed of 21,600 vibrations per hour, with the tourbillon moving at 60 rotations per hour (or one rotation every 60 seconds). Its first role is to provide an analog time display, giving a three-dimensional presentation of the phases of the Moon. It contains a mechanism that displays the height of the tides in real time in relation to a specific location, in addition to indicating the seasonal coefficients. With its diameter of 44 mm, this is an instrument specially conceived for the modern adventurer who models himself on Captain Nemo.
Magnificently reproduced in 3D, the bows of a luxury vessel seem to surface from a pool of white gold as though it were emerging from the mist, and cuts through a sea of “grand feu” enamel on a wave of foam portrayed with astonishing realism. Just ahead of its unveiling at the Miami Yacht Show and Watches & Wonders this weekend, we got wind that Ulysse Nardin is dropping anchor stateside with a new limited-edition, platinum tourbillon timepiece inspired by mega yachts . A follow-up to the Marine Grand Deck Tourbillon launched by Ulysse Nardin in 2016, the new Marine Mega Yacht has a creative new way of representing its various complications. A platinum ship’s bow at 12 o’clock ploughs through a 3-D blue Grand Feu enamel dial as though it were sailing through the Ocean. A patented 80-hour power reserve is indicated by a moving anchor connected to a windlass linked to the winding mechanism, while the flying tourbillon moving at one rotation every 60 seconds is decorated like a ship’s propellor.

The watch also comes equipped with a moonphase with a 3-D representation of the moon’s actual surface with one half of the sphere treated in blue PVD for the period of the new moon and the other rhodiumized to simulate the illuminating effect of the sun. To top it off, the watch has a tide indicator at an aperture at 8 o’clock, which displays the tides in real time according to a specific location.

To create this manually wound mechanical caliber with a slew of yacht-inspired complications, Ulysse Nardin employed its top watchmakers, as well as watchmakers from small independent watchmaker Christophe Claret—known for its creative complications. At the heart of the watch’s “engine” is a 37 mm caliber with 504 components with an 80-hour power reserve beating at 21,600 vibrations per hour. Visible through the caseback, the new UN-631 caliber is modeled to look like the engines in a ship vessel.

To set all of its various functions, a window on the side of the case fashioned after a Chadburn Telegraph—a communications device used on a ship by the pilot to give engineers an indication for the optimal speed to power the vessel—indicates the position of the crown. The “S” position indicates the position for setting the hours and minutes, a “T/M” position indicates the setting of the tide and moonphase indicators, and a “W” for winding the watch.
There’s a lot to play with in the new 44 mm, platinum Marine Mega Yacht($310,000), but only 30 people in the world will get to play captain to the timepiece.

Ulysse Nardin Maxi Marine Diver Gold Ceramic Watch Review
Now is probably a good time to review this mostly solid 18k rose gold version of the Ulysse Nardin Maxi Marine Diver watch. Why? Well, at the time of writing this article, I’ve just returned from Russia where Ulysse Nardin is the top luxury watch brand. So, with those impressions in mind, I have a new way of appreciating the designs and ethos of the watchmaker. I’ve long been a fan of Ulysse Nardin, even though not all of their designs are my cup of tea. What helps make the brand special is that it is independent. What does that mean? well no one owns Ulysse Nardin so they can do whatever they like. Most luxury watch brands are part of a larger group, so their actions are thus limited.
That independence has translated into a brand that makes watches starting at around $6,000 all the way up to over $1,000,000. There are very few brands that have such a wide price range in their collection – and Ulysse Nardin makes it work. I find their entry-level models often as interesting as the ones at the top. Many people agree that Ulysse Nardin designs verge on the avant garde. They did release the Freak after all. This sense of design experimentation is rather unlike a solidly Swiss company, but understanding more about where the brand is most popular has helped me appreciate how the watches are designed.
Which brings me back to Russia, a market whose tastes are unique compared to the rest of the world. Russians like people to notice their watches, and they prefer highly communicative designs. Bright colors and obvious use of precious materials are common for the high-end watch buyers there. Of course Russian watch collectors vary in taste as much as those from anywhere else in the world, there is a very real sense of “don’t be afraid to show off success” in the country when it comes to what you wear.
Ulysse Nardin told me a few years ago that they were the top luxury watch maker in Russia. It was a bold declaration that of course sounded perhaps too optimistic. Not that I had reason to distrust them, but a lot of luxury brands make bold claims that often boil down to a matter of selective interpretation. So spending time in Moscow I decided to investigate a little bit. I began this by visiting the Ulysse Nardin boutique located near the Kremlin. I spoke with its sales staff as well as store manager (a cool guy name Maxim) who seemed to confirm how popular they were in Russia. That is all nice and good, but it is still from the company itself. So I took myself to other watch stores and also spoke to some local collectors. Given what I was doing in Moscow I even stopped random people on the street. What surprised me is that while none of these people had actual sales figures to prove the specificity of how popular Ulysse Nardin was, they all seem to confirm that Ulysse Nardin was a top brand. more »
